one thing I use a lot to put a pattern on my bisects is a comb ( I am bald so I don't use it LoL) better than a fork because it it longer and gets the more holes in the bisects quicker
Bravo Christine, they look so delicious. You are an amazing cook. I love your channel. Greek cuisine is one of my very favorite. My favorite of your recipes (thus far) is that Greek filo egg custard you make in that big pan. Galaktaboureko. OMG. 😛🤪💝💝🏆🏆🎖🎖👍👍So amazing. Happy Easter to you and your fam8ly. God Bless !!!
Made them, love them, and so do my friends! Quick question (maybe silly): I had syrup left over and put it in a jar in the refrigerator. Will it be good enough for my next batch or should I make it fresh?
Ahh there are not silly questions. My husband keeps the extra syrup in a little jar and then heats it up and drizzles it on each cookie he's about to inhale.. ( hilarious). You can keep the syrup and bring it back up to the boil by adding some more water to loosen it up., It might start to crystalize ( common ) . I hope this helps.
@1:54 the allspice looks like nutmeg, and you had already added allspice @1:40 Looking at the written recipe, I can see that you meant to say nutmeg! This looks like the best recipe I've seen for this cookie, and I can't wait to make it. I have to get some pastry flour first, but I have all of the other ingredients and have plenty of oranges in my back yard.
In your written recipe, you indicate that the ground walnuts for garnish "are oprional" - (for those with nut allergies aside -) they should not be eating these cookies 😮 The walnuts are the icing on the cake! This garnush is actually a major part of this recipe and should not be omitted. What a beautiful, delicious cookie. They remind me of Thia Maria from Athens ❤🌹❤️
@@irmaarellanez8080 no. Melomakarona are traditional made for Christmas. Of course nowadays they can be found all year round. As for funerals we traditionally serve some kind of dry rusks flavoured with cinnamon or fennel seeds.
Is there an advantage to dipping the hot cookies into hot syrup? I always thought one had to be cool, the other had to be hot. These are my fave Greek cookie and I'm planning to make these for Christmas for the first time!
Yes, by dipping hot cookies into hot syrup they absorb more of the syrup and become almost cakey. Otherwise the syrup will mostly sit on the outer edge of cookie and be more crisp inside. I hope this helps. Thank you
Thanks so much Christine! Can't wait to make these, along with your kourabiedes recipe that were amazing last year when I made for the first time. Love all your recipes! Merry Christmas!
Hi, can i use peanut or sunflower oil in place of olive oil? I suffer IBS & do not tolerate olive oil unfortunately. Thanks. Will be trying this recipe very soon!
Yes you can use another oil in place of the olive for these. The flavour will be more subtle but with all the spices and honey they will still be great. I hope you try them.
My absolute favourite too. Sygnómi.. but you added ground cloves, allspice and cinnamon...then you grated a nut, which you called allspice (in English)?? Looks like nutmeg to me. You called it μοσχοκάρυδο (Nutmeg in Greek) OR am I wrong? I make mine like my grandmother did, withmore semolina than flour. I like them nutty :)
Thea, I tried making melomakarona twice from different recipes similar to yours but everytime the dough ends up too dry and it's not nice like yours. My cookies don't soak up the syrup well and don't crumble nice like they are supposed to. I will try your recipe, because I think my batter is too dry and I end up overworking it!
I have a question on the pastry flour measuring, 3 measured cups of my pastry flour is only 320 grams, I would need at least 4 cups to get to 450 grams as per your directions. Should I use3 cups or 450 grams?
It must be the protein level in your flour , so I would say to use 450 gm, that would be most accurate. Additionally , I would hold back 50 gm of the flour at first until you see how the dough holds together. Refer to the video for the optimal texture of the dough . I hope you make / love them.
