One big thing I learned: "Grades matter, but really they don't" The focus should be on the transition from student to professional, and your clients and employers will NOT care if you got a 4.0 in your grad program or not.
Thank you for posting. I'm starting my Masters fully online this week. I'm a wife and mother of two and have worked in the legal and law enforcement for over 15 years. I've desired to go to law school for over 20 years, but life experience and the pandemic has shifted my interests to mental health. These tips are practical and relieve some of the hesitations transitioning my professional focus later in life.
Third year doc student in Counselor Education here. One powerful realization that I came to during my studies is that my department does not own me. It can feel like all we are is a student while pursuing graduate education and that absolutely everything else comes second. While feeling really burned out over school work, I had the epiphany that I am so much more than just a doc student. Outside of school, there are so many things I love to do and people I love to see that have nothing to do with academia. It took some intentional work to reconnect with that (especially in the face of a pandemic!), but it has helped me feel more in control and centered while going through my program. Also, side note: after a while in your program, take some time to celebrate that you are pretty darn smart and tenacious! You don't need a diploma to acknowledge how awesome and amazing you have become. Grad school is hard work, and it's important to celebrate those slam-dunk papers and presentations :)
Yes yes yes! I love everything about this. Kudos to you for figuring all this out while you're still in it. I felt like I needed to detox for many years before I started learning some of these things. Congrats on living your life and best wishes to you!
Thank you, starting my 2nd field placement at Beth Isreal hospital in Boston today, and needed to hear this! Especially like the first part about being yourself is biggest asset🙏
I wish I had seen this a few years ago, but glad to have found it now. I’m at the end of my first year of grad school, and have decided to slow down the pace at which I am going. I know this is the right path for me, but it feels too fast. I work full time and taking classes at a full time level is taking its toll. I want to be present focused and not worry about what practicum will look like. I want to enjoy the process and bring my true self to this new role (not the one that is overwhelmed and anxious). Financially, grad school is a big undertaking and I want to figure out how to manage that in a smart way. As I said, I know this path is right, but I need to do it in my own time. 😊
I’m a licensed therapist now, and I agree that our authenticity is our biggest asset. I had this vision also of what a therapist would be like, look like, act like, etc. Throw all that out the window and be who you are, show up authentically.
Thanks for these tips. I’m in my 3rd semester of grad school. I know I prioritize grades and perfectionism. I’m trying to lean back and give myself time for self care ( which I have not been doing ).
I'm a counselling grad student and I really wish I was told to prioritize my self care wayyyy sooner, like in undergrad! Thanks for these great tips! (:
I’m just a junior in my undergrad but am starting to get my emails inviting me to start grad school applications. I feel wholly overwhelmed but your insights, energy and candor in addition to your comments section has been and is so so so helpful. Lots of love to you all.
loveeee this thank you so much for this especially no.1 I never see it that way that who i am is the biggest asset always feel like i have to be some ideal counselor hearing this is really pull me back to come back to myself and who i am first
Thanks for posting a video about grad school!! I’m in grad school and it’s nice to hear some tips that apply in my stage of life. Is it possible to do a video about how to turn a grad paper into a blog post!?
@@PrivatePracticeSkills thanks so much! I’m about half way done. I hope to see a future video like that 🥰 also I recommend your channel to my class cohort!
@@PrivatePracticeSkills I blog for therapists. If you'd ever like to collab on content like this, do let me know. :) I'm just a mhc grad student, so you're way more experienced. I'm a freelance writer to get through school, so that's the area I've got the experience in. :) Not advertiising, just would love to help with videos about writing if you want to do any. :)
Thanks for this!! I wish I knew these jewels 💎 almost ten years ago in my masters programs. My story was difficult!! Maybe one day I can share it on a podcast or book 📖
Marie, can you help me? I need to submit an interview video for my masters program. What do I wear? What do I talk about? Any advice would be awesome. Pretty please! Lol

Yes! I'm all about striving for excellence, but there's no need to sweat a grade that's less than what we expected of ourselves.

Yes! Who you are is more important than anything else - and embracing it! :)
Thanks for step 5. I always thought that you had to know the specifics just to enter grad school, LOL.
Is the LPCC is California more transferable out of state than the LMFT? Someone help 😭
Currently applying to grad schools!

Best wishes in grad school! That's a great video idea, and could probably apply to a lot of academic papers in general too. Thanks!
