This is the scene that made me go "Man, this is going to be a fun ride"
Yeah me too, but before this, is one of the most beautiful piece of film making. It's basically from the time he spots Josef onward. My favorite parts is when "Think" by Kaleida starts and you see a silhouette then blood splatter all while the cinematographer is doing a tracking shot that ends when John kills that dude with his knife and the attention to detail of John never breaking eye contact to confirm the kill. Idk it's the lighting, the color palette with red and blue signifying when he is in control (blue) to out of control/angry (red), and finally the way makes eye contact with Josef and shoots a bad guy while never breaking eye contact talk about an effective power move and terrifying.

I would love to have an unlimited budget and years to train on this stuff with top notch instructors as well. Not sure I would meet his level at my age , or ever, but would love to give it a go

Keanu Reeves was actually acknowledged for being faster at reloading than people trained by military, assassins, and professionals who reload weapons for a living, he is actually faster than people trained to kill and who make it their profession.
The funny part is he did go to the range and got training with the weapons he used in the moves so the fact he's faster with training while not doing it for a living is really cool in and of itself

I love that he checks the reason for the stoppage and then changes mags. I also love that he actions the slide rather than using a slide catch.

Was it a malfunction the reason why the gun didn't slide lock? Unless the press check to the throat was why the slide was forward. To me, he was empty and emergency reloaded.
So I don't know a lot about handguns, but I'm pretty sure you can't check the cause of a stoppage without racking the slide, and also that it should've locked to the rear after his last round since it had an empty mag in it.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like the limitations of not being able to use blanks in this scene made the gun a lot less realistic.

he actions the slide because it is unrealistic to use the slide catch when it doesn't lock tot he rear. The gun was empty and did not lock to the rear.
He checks the stoppage because that was in his gun training. The prop guys don't know how real firearms work so they made the prop gun go click when he fires it empty.
Keanu instinctively went through malfunction check and fix procedures because the gun clicked when empty instead of locking to the rear.
The sequels are loads of fun, but the first one is just so simple and solid
Still my favorite out the series. It was clean,grounded and solid. He was more boba yoga here.

That's such a good scene. The P30L has a VERY large slide catch/slide release lever, and it's VERY light to press as well. It's pretty easy to ride your thumb on that lever when shooting, which makes the slide doesn't lock back after the last round. That's probably what happened and he ended up reloading by racking the slide back 🎉

Moment when camera angle goes to skyview and it looks like an early 1990s snes game is an amazing part of ch 4. Love it, his top music being in the whole scene is just an added bonus
I count the bullets every time I watch this scene. Very realistic in regards to the number of shots.
8 and 8, very low if that's a nine but also we didn't see the beginning of the first mag nor the end of the second in this clip. That's a healthy mag well so should be around 15 capacity.

Fantastic gunfight, the toe shot reminds me of the final shootout in 'The Way of the Gun'.

That's not actually a gang banger hold - that is Keanu "canting" the weapon from the CAR (Center Axis Relock) position. Most people use it to supplement the Weaver stance rather than replace it entirely the way Wick does, but there's no wrong way if it works :) it's a good position for keeping the weapon close to your body and maybe checking the chamber indicator on the HK P30L without moving too far off your sight picture and the cool factor is undeniable 😎

John wick is set in a fantasy world where no one's actually trying to hurt John wick. They simply walk up to him and let him do cool moves on them.
Seems Wick can read minds. He turned to shoot at the guy coming through the door before he even did.
When you're in the flow, you KNOW when it's been too long since your last look behind...
I have a co-worker who served somewhere in the Middle East, he told me that when you’re in a combat zone or are simply born with a “hunter/killer” (what he called it) mindset you get hyper aware, and those who don’t tend to be the ones who get killed or wounded, it’s one of the reasons he’s on my ass so much about my poor attention to detail, we work in a steel shop which while isn’t nearly as dangerous as a warzone can still be plenty dangerous, I’ve gotten more attentive over time but the guy really has almost a “sixth sense” when it comes to what’s going on around him.
I tend to accidentally sneak up on people (I’m a naturally quiet mover) but never once have I done this on accident or on purpose to him in particular, the man just kinda knows I’m there regardless of how much noise I’m making and regardless of if he can see me or not.
Something interesting he told me was that at a certain point he started getting good at figuring out when an ambush was about to take place, either by noticing that their usual route had more signs of use than normal or because of the “vibe” of the area and sometimes because he could just “feel” it. Now I’ve never been in combat, nor have I done extensive research on why this is, but to me it seems like certain people and certain conditions can “unlock” so to speak certain instincts that we just have no need for in everyday life for the majority of society. Hyper awareness, is one of em, I’ve grown in an environment where I’ve had no need for being hyper aware, my co-worker spent most of his early adult life in an environment where being hyper aware was a survival skill. Wick, being a former assassin and being so good at it, undoubtedly had this hunter/killer mindset.

This scene reminds me a bit of Tom Cruise from Collateral, except way over the top.
Maybe the audio is better than Call of Duty.

If you notice, John Wick never ever shoots an innocent person. This is why his character is so likable and is so believable.
