  • @ottopartz1
    @ottopartz1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video breaking the whole system into easily understandable chunks. As a petrolhead I've started to become interested now that the technology is becoming more mature and end user friendly. I only have one question, if you swap out for electric how is the brake system run? Is there an efficient pump to run the vacuum booster or is there a different system available to run the hydraulics for it? I understand that the motor can do some braking and regen but there not designed to stop a vehicle correct?

    • @ElectronGarage
      @ElectronGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your car engine has provided the pump for the servo, you simply use a 12 v brake booster pump. These are an off the shelf part used in many vehicles like BMW & VW. The same can be said of power steering there are 12 v electric steering pumps commonly used in the Vauxhall Zafira.

      @@ElectronGarage thanks for the info. I'm in the US and am not super familiar with the newer vehicles and didn't know that these were an off the shelf or pulled from a scrapyard option. Hi sir. How much can these complete kits go for a Passat CC car and how can i get these please?

  • @nk53nxg
    @nk53nxg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you sell these kits? I think a Mazda MX5 or Toyota MR2 would be great for a conversion (apart from battery packaging). I do wonder about the original ECU in modern vehicles that works the dash , alarm and other systems working in conjunction with the electric drivetrain. I suppose you could just trickle charge the original 12 volt system from the lithium battery pack via a step down transformer? The engine management lights on the back of the dash would need pulled and the gauges converted over to battery charge level. Rev counter/tac not needed but could be used for fun to check leccy motor rpm. Do you keep the clutch in a manual trans, I suppose you still need to synchronise engine and wheel speed when shifting gear regardless of electric? I heard some people who have done conversions using the original manual trans remove the clutch to make dirrect drive and block all other forward gears apart from 2nd as the instant torque means you do not need 1st, and the ratio of 2nd gear suits an electric motor for efficiency at most speeds, not sure if this is all true. I can see an issue arise with an electric motor if using all the original forward gears and having to shift up or down, if you take your foot of the power to dip the clutch to change gear the electric motor will quickly drop to 0 rpm as it does not need to idle. Dumping the clutch at speed after changing up or down a gear with a leccy motor at 0 rpm will tear the clutch apart, which is why only using one forward gear would simplify things? If using all the forward gear ratios then would you need a wheel speed sensor to help the motor take up drive more smoothly when switching cogs? I am genuinely intersted and would love to tinker on a conversion myself, live in NE Scotlans too.

    heating/cooling of cabin and battery?
    Regen/Cruise?

    • @ElectronGarage

      Cabin heating can be a PTC heater, battery cooling and heating just the same as Tesla would use, how you control that is up to what BMS you use. Regen absolutely yes as with all AC motors. @@ElectronGarage yall trip up on these great videos OMITTING prices
      i know zero about cars but have studied tesla since i was a kid . Esentially whats used here is what was stolen by the FBI from Tesla ( Trumps grandad lead the raid - all true ) upon his death - then sat on for years as it would cripple the US banks ( who set oil prices ,via the petro dollar) . Its a tesls coil & output power ratio hugely magnified by the batteries ( whis tesla NEVER ENVISIONED :/ ) Tesla saw a future where electricity can be simply "taken " from the atmosphere , wireless technology it was called back in 1920 ! The cost of this HAS to be astronomic to offset the loss to oil - ironic that we just stole FIVE TRILLION dollars worth of lithium from Afghanistan ( real reason we were there ) I am interested also- where do you dispose of the dead or broken or no good battery packs ? cos they arent recycleable - some components are but the crux of them are not & will end up like the ridicuous wind farm propellers which also have no recycle abilities . So i was not astonished to see a price tage for JUST the coil between 5 & 10 grand & ANYONE whos got a spare 1972 VWB knocking about clearly has no money issues :/ this isnt a car for the public & its eye watering the prices - would like to know ( & see ) where you take or send the batteries too - good vid anyway dropped you a like ,cheers

    My mom has a 2007 Saturn Vue with a 2.2L engine. I think it would be a perfect candidate for an EV conversion. It has a bad engine - although it does still start up and drive. My mom doesn’t change her oil though but I think it would make the journey out to California IF babied.
    She’s looking to spend $5k anyway to get a different car. I’ve read that it costs about $8k to $10k to convert an existing vehicle to EV. The Vue’s body is made all out of plastic - so lightweight and no rust. I feel like converting that would be a very wise choice financially. Approximately how much would it cost if I brought it out to you guys. I feel like I would have to anyway - I don’t know of many EV conversion shops here in Wisconsin.

    • @ElectronGarage
      @ElectronGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends what you want from the vehicle but as a minimum you should match the original horsepower. If you can find one motor that will equal or slightly higher a single motor is the easiest route and you keep your original gear and transfer box. You can also use OEM like Lexus RX as they have a motor generator for the front and motor rear differential you can buy a third party board for the inverter and control the motors from the one inverter. You can also go the Tesla route with either 2 small drive or 1 large and one small motors in adapted subframes. email info@electrongarage.co.uk for further costs and details.

      Mind the batteries when doing a high hp AWD swap, you need a lot of battery to get all available power out of two Tesla drive units. Especially if you combine a small and a big drive unit, the peak current will be very high

    • @antonkrause2420
      @antonkrause2420 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thom kouwen I wasn’t planning on two full size Tesla drive units 😂 I was thinking either one mounted to the drivetrain or two smaller direct drive motors. Not sure if they would end up being Tesla, depends on how quickly this all adds up.

      @ElectronGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      2 x Small Drive Tesla units with inverter boards will cost circa £10k. Lexus kit will cost around £3k and allows more of a budget for a decent battery.

    • @xXZ31t6esTXx
      @xXZ31t6esTXx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      From the HV junction box there are fuses that can be used for a HV compressor or you can just use a 12v compressor.

    Do you really need shielded cable?

    • @ElectronGarage
      @ElectronGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don’t have to use it but we feel it’s good practice. Currently there is no legislation in the UK about converting a vehicle,but it wouldn’t take much for our nice govt to say okay it’s time to regulate this as they do in Europe, this will no doubt need independent testing and that’s where non shielded cable will throw all sorts of electrical emissions. So from the outset we use shielded cable and glands.
