If you are driving a longer vehicle ensure that the entire vehicle is across the tracks before stopping.
Over half of all vehicle-train crashes occur at night because drivers didn't see the train and drove into the side of it.
And many train-vehicle collisions occur because there are multiple tracks and the second train is hidden behind the first.
Most railway crossings are controlled with regulatory signs.
Drivers MUST yield-give the right-of-way-to trains. If there are lights and gates, drivers cannot proceed until the gate goes up.
Never, ever race a train at a crossing. If your vehicle breaks down on the tracks, get out and get all passengers out and clear of the vehicle to a distance of 30m (100ft) and call 911 or local police.
The exact location of the crossing is on the front or rear of the railway crossing sign. Have that information ready for emergency services when you call.

And also the reason why trains are extremely dangerous is because they can't stop quickly

In california, if there is no stop sign or red light do you have to come to a complete stop before crossing or can you just proceed with caution?

I heard a tip, be careful crossing all railroad crossings. Railroad crossings that you never saw a train on can still be used and one day you will encounter a train while crossing the tracks.

So when a approach a active railroad (the ones with the lights and red and white guard) if the guards are up and light are off I don't need to stop or yield I may just continue at my speeds?

Yesterday i crossed the railroad when the lights are flashing and the bells ringing, after i crossed the railroad i saw the cars behind me stopping as the bar lowered. But the reason why i crossed was because the bar hadn't lowered yet. Now i'm so scared that i'd get caught for crossing it. Should i stop right after the lights flash?

Another reason why trains is they keep moving forward is because they are harder to see other vehicles pass in front of them. I didn’t have to deal with railroad crossing when I took my road test back was many years ago back in 2007 around the state of California in the LA area.

I don't know what to do, if my breaks were whatever during a train crossing. I imagine that I get out of the car FAST and leave it there. Am I wrong? What should I do in that kind of emergency???

In Guelph, Ontario, they have railway crossing and an X sign, but no STOP sign with it. Do I stop first and look? One of the examiner failed a tester for not stopping. Location Imperial Rd southbound from Woodlawn Road West.

When there is an X on the pavement before a railway crossing, are you supposed to stop before the X or on the X?

  • @rawsonreich

When I am approaching the railway with railroad crossing signals I watch them just in case they start to activate and I do scan the tracks

What should a driver do if the lights start flashing right when they are about to come up the intersection or already are at the intersection? Should they slam the brakes? I’ve only stopped for train passing once, but some cars had already stopped. That’s one thing I’m scared about. I fear that I won’t know what to do if the lights start to flash if I’m already close to the intersection (or at).
