Rick, I just started watching the channel "11foot8bridge". Durham, North Carolina. A low overhead railroad bridge has had over a hundred crashes. Authorities keep trying to beef up the warnings, and while the latest update has reduced crashes (an automatic warning flashes on the bridge for EACH truck approaching) drivers keep running into it. The bridge even has a nickname: The Canopener. Have you seen this? Might make a nice addition to this video: READ the Damn Signs! Or: Crash the Bridge!

Extremely helpful! One comment, early on in the video you mention in some location having to look back following a school zone to know when you can accelerate past the posted speed limit - sure seems dangerous to have to do that (look back while driving) rather than having a posted sign in the location you are traveling.

By my apartment complex there is a school that has a no parking sign that says ( no parking at any time "begin". The begin is at the very bottom of the sign. I always see cars parked in front of out it and just look for so Clarification.

Hi Rick, I would really appreciate if you could help explain "Emergency response signs". On Ontario MTO Guide it explains " Some information signs include a numbering system along the bottom of the sign to assist emergency vehicles and drivers in determining an appropriate route". However, I could not quite catch the meaning and significance/usage of it how Emergency vehicles make use of them. Thanks in advance.

Otherwise the information is not required for a passenger vehicle. You simply need to know that these are routes for emergency vehicles in such an event and you will need to pull off the roadway. I was confused by this before, with school zone or playground zone, unless there is a speed limit posted beneath the sign then you should go 30kms otherwise with just the sign , you just have to be aware , be more cautious that there is a school or playground nearby and go on with the regular speed limit

Thanks for sharing ur valauable knowledge n experience with us. I failed my first driving test for class 5 on the grounds of slow speed. Rest all was fine. I kept speed to 35-40 on the streets and 45-50 on the main roads. Plz suggest ur views on speed in home streets and main roads.thanks

Rick, I have a question about switching to BC driver license, the website information is little unclear. So If I am still in Intermediary stage in Manitoba and I am moving to BC, do I need to re-take the test and take once or twice to acquire the N? Can I drive alone in BC? thanks.

Hi Rick just another question if you dont mind. Ill be taking my test in late August. Do i still need to go 30 km/hr in a school zone? Not sure if it would counts as school still being in session as schools have summer school and whatnot. Thanks in a advance! I have a question, if there is a speed limit sign but orange in colour and says 40km per h when turning because there is an upcoming curve ahead on the road, do you go 40 right after the orange sign or go 40 only when you slow down at the upcoming curve? Also what if there is a (30km per h at exit) orange sign in a 60 zone, what is the proper procedure there for the purposes of a road test. Thanks
Hi Chris - the change is posted speed limit changes at the sign. If the sign is black and yellow - it is only a cautionary sign, and you don't have to do the exact speed limit. Remember, you have to demonstrate to the examiner that you have due care and control of the vehicle at all times during the exam. Cheers Rick
Excellent question. That's only in a manual car my friend. It's due to the fact that if you "miss the shift", which some times happens, you're stuck on the tracks. And newer drivers with less experience might have this happen to them. This is an old mandate of the driver's test and should be re-visited. But back in the 1940s & 50s, this happened a lot more and there were a lot more trains. Now with technology, it doesn't happen so much - even with learner drivers. Cheers Rick
Hi A W - Thank you for your comment. First, it is unlikely that a construction zone is not going to have a reduced speed sign. And if not, then there will be a flagger directing traffic and indicating that you should reduce speed. If the conditions culminate that you suggest, than I would suggest 50km/hr or slower until you are past the construction zone. It really depends on the conditions of the construction zone and how much they have torn up the road. As I said, it is unlikely that there aren't going to be speed signs. Let's keep going with our kids & doing this traffic sign test! Which road sign tells you to yield the right-of-way? A yield sign! Which sign says Do Not Enter? A blocked road sign! Which sign tells you that there is a winding road ahead? A winding road ahead sign! Which sign tells you to stop & look out for trains? A railroad crossing (RRX sign)!
Which signs tell you to stop & walk around the street? The red stop hand or the red do not walk means stop & the white man or the white walk means walk. Which sign tells you that you are merging into a road? An exit sign! Which 3 signs tell you to stop, slow down or go? Traffic lights!

They have signs in the ground arrows, and that sign can’t be missed because they should have the signs up where you can see him at night that’s very dangerous

Thanks for sharing ur valauable knowledge n experience with us. I failed my first driving test for class 5 on the grounds of slow speed. Rest all was fine. I kept speed to 35-40 on the streets and 45-50 on the main roads. Plz suggest ur views on speed in home streets and main roads.thanks

In school zones in Ontario the speed limit is 40 km/h, not 30. Also, the speed limit on the 401 is 100 km/h, not 120.

Rick, I have a question about switching to BC driver license, the website information is little unclear. So If I am still in Intermediary stage in Manitoba and I am moving to BC, do I need to re-take the test and take once or twice to acquire the N? Can I drive alone in BC? thanks.

Hi Rick just another question if you dont mind. Ill be taking my test in late August. Do i still need to go 30 km/hr in a school zone? Not sure if it would counts as school still being in session as schools have summer school and whatnot. Thanks in a advance! Do i still need to slow to this speed for the instructor to be able to tell that i noticed the sign?

I have a question, if there is a speed limit sign but orange in colour and says 40km per h when turning because there is an upcoming curve ahead on the road, do you go 40 right after the orange sign or go 40 only when you slow down at the upcoming curve? Also what if there is a (30km per h at exit) orange sign in a 60 zone, what is the proper procedure there for the purposes of a road test. Thanks
Hi Chris - the change is posted speed limit changes at the sign. If the sign is black and yellow - it is only a cautionary sign, and you don't have to do the exact speed limit. Remember, you have to demonstrate to the examiner that you have due care and control of the vehicle at all times during the exam. Cheers Rick
I am kinda wondering how come you can not shift on a railway track? I do not drive.
Excellent question. That's only in a manual car my friend. It's due to the fact that if you "miss the shift", which some times happens, you're stuck on the tracks. And newer drivers with less experience might have this happen to them. This is an old mandate of the driver's test and should be re-visited. But back in the 1940s & 50s, this happened a lot more and there were a lot more trains. Now with technology, it doesn't happen so much - even with learner drivers. Cheers Rick

Hi A W - Thank you for your comment. First, it is unlikely that a construction zone is not going to have a reduced speed sign. And if not, then there will be a flagger directing traffic and indicating that you should reduce speed. If the conditions culminate that you suggest, than I would suggest 50km/hr or slower until you are past the construction zone. It really depends on the conditions of the construction zone and how much they have torn up the road. As I said, it is unlikely that there aren't going to be speed signs.
