Project Powerfeed Part 1

  • We are finally putting a powerfeed on the mill!
    This video focuses on the electronics of the system, and we also look at solving CNC router electrical interference.
    The powerfeed will be 'smart' in that it can be told what to do and can be programmed. I decided not to make it smarter as we could have a robot uprising on our hands 🤖
    This marks a departure from the previously established style and going more in depth. Feel free to drop feedback positive or otherwise, I'd like to know

    We enjoy the little mill small machinery. Nice to see your mill and this conversion.
    Thank you for the share, we are always learning from others. We are both happy you are, per your description, heading to more detailed in-depth sharing, nice approach.

    Nice work Tom. I'm very interested to see the clutch/gearing linked up. I need to do similar to my mill at some point. Hadn't really considered using a stepper, but I can definitely see some benefits. Cheers, Craig

    Nice project - got a list of materials you used. I under spec'd my stepper the last time and it was too wimpy.

      Only just saw that I missed this one
      I used a 3 Nm stepper It will be driving through gears and a timing belt (1:1 though no gear reduction). We'll see how it goes
      Planning to get a coding video out about 2 weeks from now, I'll include equipment in that video

    G’day Tommy hey how many illegal height trucks have hit the bridge you knocked off the sign from;-)
    I know nothing of electronics but the grounding of the spindle to workpiece was interesting, I’ve seen a few CNC machines cutting aluminium but not one with a plate chasing the spindle, it’s like a dog chasing it’s tail, what happens when it catches up grrr
    Well presented, cheers.

    • @TomMakeHere
      @TomMakeHere  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I've never heard of this router issue before. I'd say it's because my electronics are not well shielded
      I had to baby sit that plate to makes sure it didn't get caught up, I'm thinking I'll make a small brushed wire on the back side of the spindle that can't get caught

      Yes, do it if you know what you're doing because mill machine auto feeders are so expensive. They know we have no option but buy them.

    Cool project mate !
    I need to build one for the Y axis on my mill , already have power feed on the X axis and Quill so once i get the Y axis fitted i won't have to wind a handle again!
    You could fit an encoder on the stepper so you can use the Arduino to display the feed rate the code is just a modified tacho sketch and displays it on an lcd

    • @TomMakeHere
      @TomMakeHere  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be a good place to get to!

      You can get cheap encoders off ebay , i used a second hand Baumer encoder on my spindle feed unit ( a copy of the one Stefan gotteswinter made and showed in one of his videos ) but the ones on ebay look the same as the baumer.
