I was in Vevay last fall for a festival and actually saw Kat Von D filming with some people in a field next to the Schenck Mansion. Come to find out later through social media, she’s planting an enormous field of black tulips next to her property. She’s nestled perfectly in the castle on the hill. Great video, Roger!
I now live in Indy but I grew up in Palm Springs CA. I met Red Skelton who lived out his elder years there. Every Saturday afternoon he would hand out “red” carnations to the ladies at the shopping center where I had my first job.
I loved Red Skeleton when I was a kid,I remember a house on the east side of Evansville that I was told he lived in at one time, it was a thrill just to see it, although comedy was his thing, I remember him singing a sad song in a baby nursery with an empty crib, and becoming emotional, I Believe he had a child die in infancy, whenever I see a sad clown it reminds me of the melancholy Mr Skeleton.
Red was a very deep person, hidden by his comedy. His 9 year old son Richard was diagnosed with leukemia, and given a year to live. The family toured Europe to show Richard the world, before he passed at only 10 years old. It affected Red the rest of his life. Red drew 100’s of pictures of sad clowns, even one with vultures, and reporters asked why. He would never say why, but had once said he himself was a clown, not a comedian. All of those sad clowns were self portraits.
Lived in So. IN years ago in a home built by a riverboat Capt. about 1850... "Nawhbanny" for those who know the local dialect. LOL Still had that rather Southern charm. Thanks for the memories.

Two things. My high school band from Vincennes marched in the Gimbels parade. in Philadelphia. Claude Akins was the grand marshal. As the parade participants were lined up. he came by in a car and stopped when he saw we were from Vincennes and got our to talk to us. He was dressed in his Sherriff Lobo costume. He was very friendly and happy to see kids from Indiana. Because we were from Vincennes, we played "Send in the Clowns". My dad dressed up like Clem Kadiddlehopper and helped carry the school banner in front of the band. My parents helped organize and prepare items donated by Red's wife for the museum. I seem to remember his personal car was part of the donated items. My dad told me about sitting in the old Mercedes. I assume the car is in the museum?
What a cool piece of personal history, something you’ll never forget! I didn’t see a car at the museum. it’s either in storage or they did something else with it.
Two from New Albany to add to your list: Josh Dallas has become well-known for his TV roles in Manifest and Once Upon a Time. He has also been in several movies including Thor. Charlie Wen is most known for co-founding and heading Marvel's Visual Development, and was accountable for designing the look and feel of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Thor in 2008 and is now the Chief Creative Officer for Epic Games (Fortnight). He was born and raised in Taichung, Taiwan before his family moved to New Albany when he was 5. Although they didn’t meet growing up, Charlie and Josh did finally meet on the set of Thor.
@@AdventureswithRoger They attended New Albany High School and I had a privilege of teaching both. There is a lot of talent and work ethic in Southern Indiana. Love your videos.
My mother was a big Red Skelton fan & got to see him perform in the late-80’s. She was able to go back stage afterwards, where he drew a clown on the shirt he’d worn during the performance & gave it to her.
I enjoy your videos, Roger. Although he wasn't an actor, he has written & produced some of Indiana's most famous sports movies. Angelo Pizzo. Hoosiers, Rudy, My All American, & The Hill. He has helped me out by signing many items for cancer patients to sell/auction. Keep up the great videos.
Red Skelton was my favorite comedian when I was a child. There were many a night that I would laugh so hard that I would end up on the floor. I also got the privilege to see him in Vincennes. I believe it was around 1964. He was on stage and at some point in his act he told how he, at a very young age, ran off with the traveling circus. Erin Moran was often seen walking along SR 135. I was living near New Salisbury at the time and word got around about her living in the trailer park.
Red was good people, and we need more like him! The media made a lot of cruel rumors about Erin. I wanted to clear a few of them up, without tarnishing the story too much. The producers that made Happy Days and Joanie Loves Chachi, made millions off of syndication and merchandising. Erin made a little over $60k from all of it, not even enough for medical bills. Henry Winkler, that played “Fonzie” on Happy Days, helped her out where he could.
Great video! I loved Red Skelton. Dad and I used to watch his show together. I’d love to visit the museum. Interesting factoid: Red Skelton at one time owned the former Charlie Chaplin studio which later became the home of A&M Records and now is owned by the Jim Henson Company.

There were some great stars from Southern Indiana. Thanks for the awesome video about them. I know Ken Kercheval Built a house and had a farm just east of Huron Indiana on HWY 50 and lived there till he died, but I don't think he was born here.
I missed some from the golden age of cinema, that weren’t listed in the places I looked. MGM used to have a huge vault of movies, from the beginning of cinema, along with metadata of the stars and directors. In 1965, all of that was lost in a large fire that consumed the history of film. Kat's home in Vevay used to be a bed and breakfast for many years. I have stayed the night there when I was a young teen. Very beautiful and historic property. It was known to be haunted, it was a bit creepy.
I filmed it when it was the bed and breakfast. In the master bedroom upstairs, my camera went in and out of focus, as if it was trying to focus on something I couldn’t see. After that day, my camera never did that again.

Roger, appreciate the great history of Southern Indiana. There were a few left out from Evansville, Avery Brooks, Ron Glass, Roger Mobley (child star in the 1960's) Matt Williams & Jeri Taylor (Dick Enberg's wife) who was a screenwriter/producer for Star Trek: The Next Generation & Star Trek Voyager. Hopefully you can produce a second video.
I knew about Ron Glass but forgot him! Lots of stars. Was thinking about doing a part two about Hollywood movie locations, but this one didn’t even pay for gas! 😂
Great job Roger! I enjoy the memories I link into while watching your productions. My dad drove a bus around southern Indiana carrying passengers to and from work, to and from other small towns in our small part of Indiana. He always bragged about being Florence Henderson's first driver. LOL I had the pleasure of waiting on Mr. Skelton several times at Bob Greens Executive Inn in Evansville in the Mr. Gs Showroom with Bob and his wife. Mr. Skelton and Mr. Green were very close. Red would go walk around the hotel as if he was one of the locals. Everyone loved him. Thanks for waking these memories. ( just curious, wasn't James Dean from Indiana?)
Awesome memories! James Dean was born at Fairmount, and is buried up there. I filmed his grave last year, thinking about doing a similar project for northern Indiana: lots of Hollywood stars up there!
You forgot Denny Scott Miller, who was born in Bloomington. Billed as Denny Miller in some things and as Scott Miller in others, he was in a ton of things, including a role as Tarzan in "Tarzan the Ape Man", scout Duke Shannon on Wagon Train and roles in many many old westerns and TV shows.
Many stars that i didnt know that were from Indiana. James Best being my favorite. GrandPa Jack (born in Dale in 1913) would buy candy with His extra money and give away to the kids of Dale. One of those kids was Florance Henderson. He signed up for the duration just after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He fought in North Africa and lost His health. He passed away nearly a decade before I was born. So, America's favorite Mom knew My GrandPa better than I did.
Someone was telling me they grew up at Dale, and that their Grandmother was close friends with Florence. One day, they went to see Grandma, and ended up meeting “Mrs Brady”, whom was visiting!
While not a household name, Ann Hovey (born in Mt. Vernon) was a chorus girl and appeared in a number of B-Movies from 1933-1938. She was a descendent of Union General and 21st Governor of Indiana, Alvin P. Hovey.
The Hollywood Shop also in Vincennes, showcases many stars from Indiana on main street. My 7ft. Freddie the freeloader statue greets visitors there. I painted many of Red's clown paintings on this figure which, with others are moved to Red's museum during his yearly festival. Lots of Red's memorabilia and other stars' on display. Very interesting stop if in Vincennes. 🤡
@@laurarena741 Some years back I did paper mâché collection of sculptures for a lady in New York. They were the killer klowns from the movie, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, for her husband who also collected clowns.
Born and raised in Bedford, I'm an IU grad and have lived for 3 decades in Los Angeles working in the music and film industries. Bedford has a Hollywood connection in the form of the late actor Claude Akins who played Sheriff Lobo on NBC's "BJ & The Bear" in the late 70s then in a spinoff series that lasted 3 seasons. Claude isn't a native son. Him and his parents moved to Bedford when he was a child. After his death, a college scholarship was established at Bedford-North Lawrence H.S. There is an annual golf scramble at Otis Park with proceeds going to his scholarship.
Also from Vevay: Ken Maynard’s brother, actor and stuntman Kermit Maynard. Also from Vincennes: silent star Alice Terry, Western star Buck Jones, Green Acres actor Alvy Moore (born in Vincennes, raised in Terre Haute), and actress and journalist Elaine Shepherd (born in Olney, Illinois, but worked in Vincennes).
Jeron Criswell King was born in Princeton, Indiana. What is Huntington connection? There was a marker at the Maynard house and the library has posters. Not sure I would list Kat Von D with the others. I had to look her up.
You’re right about Jeron, he was born at Princeton. Kat Von D has been extremely successful with her television program. In fact, even more so than most of the other celebrities mentioned in this documentary. LA Ink made her a multi millionaire, and a household name to anyone that watches cable tv.

Red Skelton was great. I still like his stuff.
Just a really decent man, with an outstanding understanding of people.
@@AdventureswithRogerI walked past his Vincennes home when I was in school there.
Another name to be added is Phil Harris from Linton, In.
I wrote down Evansville’s Ron Glass, who starred in Barney Miller, and somehow forgot it in production
You forget Margorie Main who played Ma Kettle.
If people are interested in a part 2, I can include her in northern Indiana
Carol Lombard, Hoagy Carmichael, Strother Martin, Burl Ives, Steve McQueen and James Dean come to mind, also.
Lots of northern Indiana celebrities!
That’s one place I missed, had not heard of it until now!
lol I have a clown collection
@@laurarena741 Some years back I did paper mâché collection of sculptures for a lady in New York. They were the killer klowns from the movie, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, for her husband who also collected clowns.
@ that’s so awesome!!!!! I wish I could afford to buy more to go
Into my clown room haha 🤣
I’ll be signing autographs after the press conference, but *not* before
Phil Harris was from Linton
Missed Phil!
Marjorie Maine was born in Fairland Indiana, Tarzan & Jane are buried here in Forest Hill Cemetery, Shelbyville Ind., James Dean Marion Ind.
Erin’s story was very sad. She lived so close 😢
It really was sad. There were a lot of media rumors, but hopefully I was able to set things in a better light.
You found many I couldn’t find! Lots of stars here!
I'm from Vincennes, which, at least in this case, was an advantage. I really enjoy your channel.@@AdventureswithRoger
@@jac1503101 I grew up on a farm south of Vincennes and was going to mention Alvy Moore. You beat me to it by a couple of hours!
My dad, Allan Crane, managed Baltic Mills on Ramsey Road a long time ago, so he might have known your dad or grandfather. @@scottbosecker3732
Vickie Lawrence was from Poseyville.
I didn’t see that on her bio.
She was born and grew up in Los Angeles.
Are you filming anything about john mellencamp in the future? Like music video locations?
Thinking about a musician’s video
You left out Phil Harris (Jack Benny Program and many more) from Linton and Burl Ives from Terre Haute.
Phil Harris was a miss. Burl Ives was born in Hunt City, Illinois.
Can I ask where in Indiana are you located? Maybe I could help you out with your projects sometime, if we're close?
@@thegamedudeguy I once met a viewer to go hiking, seemed innocent enough: will never do that again.
Jim Neighbors who played Gomer Pyle was from Indiana
@@cossandramegerle120 For 42 years, Jim would fly into Indianapolis from his home in Hawaii, to sing “Back home in Indiana” at the Indy 500. People assumed that he was from Indiana, but he was actually born in Alabama and never lived here. He became so much a part of our culture, that we kind of adopted him! 🙂
Ron Glass Evansville
I knew about Ron, wrote it down, completely forgot about it.
Enjoy your videos of Indiana! John "Cougar"Mellencamp is from Seymour. Is that considered southern Indiana? Granted he is a singer but he has been in a few movies.
Thinking about doing a video about famous Indiana musicians. John Mellencamp used to stop by my wife’s uncles place and chat, near Lake Monroe.
How cool! And yes, please do famous Indiana musicians.
My grandma's house was in the video "pink houses" sadly it will prob be torn down in the not too distant future as it's becoming structural unsound. Its located at 530 york rd. In austin indiana if you want to catch a photo of it for a future video.
Taking a note. Thank-you!
