*Procrastination is what kills most people. Not literally kill, but it puts a stop to dreams, goals, and ambition. Learning how to get out of your comfort zone will bring many opportunities.*
Who else is multitasking right now, reading comments with one eye while watching Ali with the other, all the while listening to his super crisp narration?
True that, watching TH-cam videos like this is sort of procrastinating at times. But maybe next time when I'm struggling to do my work, I'll remember some rules from this video that I can apply.
3 things u need to know about procrastination: 1. Understanding motivation: Action comes first, motivation comes second. 2. Understanding momentum: Procrastination is just about the problem is in getting started. 3. 3 Rules: the two minutes, 5 minutes, and mind activation mind.
Some key points from this video : - 1:15 Procrastination is the act of prioritizing "short-term mood repair" over "longer-term pursuit of intended action". - 2:35 Motivation Myth: Motivation is not the cause of action. Action is the cause of motivation. - 3:33 Starting is the hardest part. Most of the resistance in a task is in the act of starting. - 4:29 2 Minute Rule: If a task only takes less than 2 minutes, do it immediately. - 5:05 5 Minute Rule: For longer tasks, tell yourself you're only going to do it for 5 minutes. This will get you through the hardest part of the task (starting). - 5:47 Mind Activation Rule: If you're feeling sluggish, stimulate your mind (e.g., by making coffee, or an online course). *cue in sponsor*
I work as a network engineer but always had a interest in coding, but never had the motivation to actually to do, and for me if I don’t have motivation to start the task, the task won’t be as appealing to me. So the idea that you don’t need motivation to start something but rather you just need to start it and the motivation will follow, is greatly enriching and refreshing to hear. Thanks Ali for this insightful information. #pugLifeBaby
• 2 minute rule - If a task take nearly 2 min to do, just do it without any second thought. • 5 min rule - If long tasks take much efforts to begin just tell yourself you'll do it for only 5 mins • Mind activating method : Activate your mind by doing some mind exercise or mind refreshing things like drinking cofee.
“Think of your many years of procrastination; how the gods have repeatedly granted you further periods of grace, of which you have taken no advantage." Marcus Aurelius
As someone who’s struggled with depression and lots of guilt from procrastinating, 10000% agree with the momentum ! Instead of beating myself up about it for not having done work so far, I focus on what I can do in the moment so that eventually I can build up momentum to catch up.
The 2/5 minute rule is life changing! So much of our daily habits and activities can be done in a few minutes or less, so it's really helpful to get these quick tasks done as soon as possible. The rest of the day suddenly feels very spacious and we have more time to focus on ourselves and our main tasks instead. It's brilliant!
Yes! Those are absolute gamechangers! another one is the 20 second rule - the idea of making something easier to do by reducing the time to do it by 20 seconds. E.g. Sleeping in your gym kit so you just wake up ready to workout
I appreciate that you touched on how motivation can come after the fact. I think the whole "grind culture" these days focuses on having grand dreams, unparalleled "motivation" and overwhelming passion (which isn't exactly bad). But they promote these things without the actual discipline of working that can give someone that motivation and passion they're looking for.
I literally applied the 2 minute rule as soon as you were finished saying it to start my laundry instead of playing my video game for 2 minutes lol I give this the stamp of approval!
True, but the 5 minute rule AKA “I’ll just get the book out” (and do coupla min reading) is a useful mental trick that works better for me in overcoming resistance than looking at it your way.
Summary of the video (for me): 1. Motivation is the result not the cause. You do an "action" --> You get "motivation". "Action" is either a discipline or habit. - You either force yourself to do it or naturally/automatically do it (like brushing your teeth). 2. Starting is the hard part. But once you start, keep doing it becomes easy b/c you get "momentum". How to make starting easy? > 2 min rule: If it's a simple task (e.g. getting a cup of water), tell the brain that I need to do it within 2 min. > 5 min rule: If it's a more complicated task that takes hours, trick the brain that I just need to do it for 5 min and then I can decide whether or not to stop.
Needed this. Procrastination is the bane of my existence. Especially in the current climate where libraries are shut and my room is full of distractions.
I did a vid like a month ago on 5 tips that could put an end to all of our vile procrastination problems 😭 I hadn’t thought of the “5 minute rule” but it deff sounds useful so thank you :)
ALI YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU. WAS HERE WHEN U HAD AROUND 50K AND MY GOD DO U DESERVE MILLIONS MORE. KEEP DOING WHAT UR DOING. LOVE FROM LONDON
I couldn't find a comment that would summarize the tips, therefore I wrote them down myself: Procrastination: To act against our better judgement by doing one thing even though we know we should be doing something else. Present Bias: Idea that I can set whatever goal I want for my future self, but it’s my present self sitting here right now that has to do the action to get there. Our present self will always prefer the short-term instant gratification rather than the long-term pursuit of intended actions. Procrastination aims to manage negative moods by pushing the problem away. Motivation: You get stuff done and THEN the motivation naturally follows. Motivation is not something you have, it is something you get. Motivation is not the cause of action, it is the result of action. Action comes first, motivation comes second. Replace the word motivation by discipline or habits. Momentum: Most of the resistance that we feel when doing a task is just in the act of starting. It’s not doing the work that’s hard, it is starting the work (Ball rolling down a hill - getting the initial push to get started). RULES: 2 Minute Rule (David Allen - Getting Things Done): If a pending task can be done in 2 minutes - do it right away! 5 Minute Rule: Do the task for at least 5 minutes - the problem is to get started, not continue to do the work. Mind Activation Rule: If you feel lazy (after eating, work…) do something to stimulate your mind: coffee, brain games.
80% of comments: Re-uttering the fact that they are procrastinating by watching this as if we don't know 10%: other memes/jokes 10%: actual productivity comments
I was procrastinating my thanks. so it takes me less than 2 minutes to write a thanks letter. so Thank You Ali. Your video is great. I just get passionate to do my job. thanksssssss
I like the 5-min rule. I had a similar rule for exercising. I always told myself to just wear sports clothes /shoes and then if I want to I can choose not to go to the gym. It worked really well. Another thing that helps with a long term project was to make it public with a simple KPI. My goal was to go to the gym for 100 days a year, and updated my status. Once I got stuck at 35/100 i.e. 35 days of going to the gym, and people started messaging me that I wasn't moving ahead. That motivated me to continue to go to the gym, sometimes just for 15 mins for stretching. But that meant that I achieved my goal.
While I appreciate the good intentions of this video, it's also just as important to recognize that procrastination can be an important insight into our subconscious minds, that might indicate deep internal conflicts that need to be resolved, or it might be the way our minds are actually working hard at optimizing a solution. It can be just as harmful to demonize procrastination and we should use these as opportunities for introspection.
To avoid procrastination in our life, we have to learn how to built habits. When we say habits we define 0 resistance in our mind. The most important habits that help us to eliminate procrastination from our life are: Sport, Reading and praying (habit for our physic, habit for our mind and habit for our spirituality) , all of us we need to fight to get those tree habits then our life will be change.
Another rule that I try to use is changing the way I look at tasks. Instead of looking at the negatives and saying you ‘have’ to do this in a negative manner, instead say you ‘get’ to do something and look at the positives. For example ‘I get to use my laptop which I revise on so I can get better grades in my tests which makes me happy’ or ‘I get to go to the gym today which contributes to me looking ripped in the summer’ or even something as little as ‘I get to use this cool electric toothbrush to brush my teeth so I look better’ or ‘I get to use this new shampoo’ looking at things in this way almost tricks your mind into thinking it is some instant gratification product and makes you more likely want to do it.
2 min rule can be used for your thought process also...if u know what you should think and what not...then..b4 thinking..also think that how much of your time is it worth... because it so happens sometimes that u stick to some topics or (may be)situations just like ants over sugar...which may not be necessary in all cases...and it sometimes eventually leads u to overthink it..and make simple things complicated
I experienced that motivation thing and I think it's true. I got motivated when I studied for a final exam. I actually got work done and learned what I thought I couldn't. Then I wanted to continue doing what I needed to do to accomplish my goals. It felt amazing!
Thanks to you and Thomas frank I learned about spaced repetition and active recall and I managed to pass all my exams and get to the dermatology residency! Thank you so much!
Procrastination is so harmful to the vision we create for our lives. However, l mindfully examine when and why I procrastinate to better understand myself and accomplish my goals.
There's something true to this video. The techniques Ali talks about are both valid. And it's true that most times the hard part is just starting to work.
