I think I've found a valuable source of knowledge with your videos. I'm starting out in the world of fabrication and I love TIG, so thanks for making and putting these videos on TH-cam, your helping me big time. I was shown one way to feed the filler, and man did I struggle with it, not no more after this video! I've just chosen a method from the four you've shown that works for me, and that the one I'll practice and use from now on. - Thanks again man.
Hey man, I'm an aspiring fabricator and I've learned pretty much everything from your videos. I'm trying to get better at my tig and your videos are really easy to understand. Keep them coming
Please no offense or ill will meant period. Kanekid is good, very good. But 6061 is nearly "God" level and I've been TIG welding for 35 years and He continues to amaze Me. Good video as usual !
I’m usually welding some sort of aluminum that came out of the scrap and I don’t know exactly what it is and it’s dirty and sometimes I get a surprise and it’s soaked with oil like a sponge and don’t know until it gets hot. I certainly hope these guys do a nice pretty job with all that perfect clean aluminum
Hahaha, I was practicing with my bit of wire during the video Realised I was doing it a bit and that I should use a piece of SS instead of the Al. Thanks for the video. I am going to try the Cane grip
My advise for the hobby welder that wants to get this down but doesnt weld as a career is to cut a 1' section of filler and carry that MFer every where you go and practice. Thats how i did it now when i tig weld on Bradley's and M1 Abrams tanks here on ft.hood its just muscle memory now. Good video though bro.
The Fabricator Series thanks for the advice I'm starting school next week for this and I hope I make a career out of this! But I will cut me a pretty good good wire and bring it home and practice those techniques I will be back to watch this from time to time again thanks for that helpful tip I didn't think of that. But will do that.
I think you forgot the other two; laywire and the dreaded wire feeder pen for those of us who don't have full use of our fingers due to "accidents". :-/
'Kane grip' inherently moves the rod laterally as it feeds, look at the position of his hand, he seems to use that motion as a dab as he goes, if your hand/wrist rotation is off you will flick the rod off to the side and have a wonky run or just straight contaminate your 'trode. Did a dry run of this for shots and giggles and it requires not only a steady hand (not good if you shake like a strung out meth addict) but guitar player-like dexterity/coordination and takes a while to get the muscle memory/rhythm. Not for everyone, probably only a select few but interesting nonetheless. I clip my rods in half and use a mix of steady and index, so I can feed when I have to but still have the beginner dab control, but I don't do many long runs. Great vid as usual anyhoo.
Just started to learn to weld. I am terrible at it....really. So much harder than it looks like most else in life. Anyway, tried tig welding yesterday and had a number of really bright flashes like the end of your Kane Grip weld. What is that? Is that the tungsten touching the rod or touching the filler rod? Actually made it like I was not even wearing a welding helmet...really bright. Love these videos. Really helpful. Cant wait to be able to take hands on classes when this Covid thing ends.
I'm always having the problem, that when i try to do this, the end of the feed wire is wiggeling to much continued by not being able to hold it in the gas flow
Bend the rod at the end and it won’t wiggle as much, you can even do multiple bends to steady it more, only Catch is if it’s a long enough weld you’ll have to get over that bent area which can be a bitch at times
I'm right handed and now discovered I feel more comforting holding the torch with the left hand and feeding with the right? is this normal/common at times with your experience in the students you have taught? I just started practicing and not sure if I should switch hands and learn the traditional handed method for a right handed person. Thank you for all your videos and everything you do for the community!
I was taught a fifth way, pinkie on the under side of the one next to it (open & close), thumb and index feeding, the feeding technique can easily change to the dip method as the wire gets too short for this thechnique.
The problem I have is when I try to feed, the hot end of the rod is flicking all over the place, not going into the leading edge of the puddle. It’s just not smooth enough as when I don’t feed. Any tips? Thank you for all the videos and demonstrations. Inspiring.
Is that Everlast welder your main welder I am looking to buy a tug welder for my shop and in a aluminum welding class now and don’t know which welder to buy ?
Torch in the right - feed with the left. You'll already have the wrist control from writing to manipulate the torch, wire feeding you'll have to learn the muscle memory for whichever way you go. It can't hurt to learn both ways though - you might come across a few rare cases where you need to weld "left handed".
Kenny Fowler In person, I'm not famous for speaking the cleanest language (been a mechanic for ever and a retired USN Sailor). On vid, there's just no reason to speak it, even if it's realistic. People can learn on their own how to drop whatever words they want haha.
I don’t think I use any of these. I use more of a ‘ scoochie ‘ method and hold it a lot closer. I don’t know how they can hold it that far back and look like anything. ( unless you’re welding 3/4 inch aluminum at 300 amps or something)
The steady grip is the grip that nearly all professional welders that have been welding for 40 years use. The grip you call tradional grip is not a traditional grip and is not commonly used by traditional welders. The grip that is commonly used by seasoned professional welders is the steady grip. As the rod gets shorter, your hand gets closer to the weld no matter what grip you use.
John Bergeson My polls conducted before the vid differ with your opinion. However, neither is right or wrong as long as the result is correct, and that's the beauty of this industry.
Do you have any advice for blow through on a door jamb when you are full throating? I have to grind out the boogers and make it look not welded. Obviously I realized not to blow through, but it happens. Usually it's 16G CRS and I'm using a Miller 200 hard wire.
I didn't know it was called Kane Grip, but that's exactly what I used when practicing 5G pipe TIG root pass. It's just the most natural and effective way to do it in that case.
@The fabrication Series - Please help me. I am about to weld my first set of headers 304. I received some filler rods from a friend, he is 90% sure that its 308. How can I make sure? What do you do when you mix up multiple filler rods?
Awesome video as always. I have a question regarding the roll cage welding/pipe welding you have done. Are the welds full penetration? Every video I watch says the key to roll cage/tube welding is the have the smallest gap possible at joints. Yet when I do that I can't seem to get anywhere near full penetration with my tig welder. I have a decent looking bead, but the inside doesn't show fusion. I know if I had a gap I could get full fusion, but everyone says not to do that. The other thing I always wondered was what is best practice with weld bead size with tig? I took a tig class at the local school, but they never covered what size I should make my actual beads. Aluminum is easy for me in that regard, the bead winds up being fairly wide. My steel welds tend to be half the width of the aluminum beads or smaller. Much smaller than most mig/stick welds I see around on a daily basis. I often wonder if I should multi pass and add another bead. Thanks in advance, and I will gladly share a beer or a pack of filler rod as a thank you :).
Hi, The size of the bead should be equal to the thickness of the material. Smaller means you don't have as much strength as the material and thicker doesn't actually do anything but waste time and money. This is a general rule however, if an engineer says otherwise on a plan, follow the plan. Also, engineers don't always know what they are doing, if you spot something fishy, talk to the engineer.
