What do you think are the best hikes in Hawaii?

This is a great hike through a beautiful forest in the back of Palolo Valley. Pre contact Hawaii says that Ka'au crater was formed by the demigod Maui when he attempted to join the sister islands of Oahu and Kauai. He cast out his fish hook to capture Kauai and tried to pull her toward Oahu. The hook came loose and landed behind him forming Ka'au crater.

Cool video! My wife and I hiked that trail a couple years back and left too late in the day and couldn’t find the path back down the crater so we had to CLIMB DOWN the last waterfall!! Super scary and dangerous because we were outside our skill zone forsure lol but it was an incredible experience and thanks for the video!!

Oh wow… we can’t even imagine doing that! Had to be scary! We are glad we did the hike, but will probably never do it again!

@@DennyandNikki oh yeah for sure! It was one of the toughest things my wife and I have done but it was worth it when we got back to our car in retrospect because damnn but yeah that last waterfall was gnarly lol those drop offs were certain death and most of the ropes (at the time) were too short for even me to grab and I’m 6’5 😂 god bless and I’m super glad you guys got to do Ka’au crater but likewise I’m never doing that or level hard all trails app hike probably ever again lol

We just hiked this and the water was INSANE coming off the falls. Was incredible but definitely sketchy.

My GPS watch said 4 miles, I did all 3 waterfalls, up the crater, past the 2nd power line tower on the ridge, headed back down. Took me 4 hours almost exactly.

You made really good time! It took us a lot longer!

@@DennyandNikki I do it once a year when I visit, so it was my 5th time....I think. I really try to get to the first waterfall in 40-45 minutes without stopping because at the waterfalls it gets tough, and tougher after the 3rd waterfall. My legs were sore for days,.

We actually took the ‘don’t go up that way’ trail and it was hectic 😂
When we looked at alltrails and saw we’d miss the waterfall climb to the side we instantly all said we must go back and do the hike again one day!
    Our favourite hike in Hawaii!!

I grew up in Palolo Valley as a young boy. As kids, we hiked all the trails and rivers in the Valley. There's a small pond (called "Ice Pond") if you continue hiking up the Valley pass the third falls. It's a little past the 3rd falls to Ke'au Crater. Great place to jump in and cool down for the final climb up 3rd falls.
The hardest climb is past the 3rd falls into the Valley. We used grappling hooks on ropes to climb the numerous waterfalls that has the clearest cold water you'll ever see. Beautiful scenes. You'll never see anything like it in the world... but beware, big landslides do happened in that section of the trail and I advise you go with someone that's from the Valley and knows the trail well.
Miss home a lot.... Palolo Valley forever.

watch out the cronics love breaking into cars at the parking spot for the trail. take a beater if you have one and don't leave valuables in the car.

I never did that one. Maybe next time I’m back, I will. But it looks like one to be prepared for, and definitely start early. It looks every bit as difficult as Stairway to Heaven - maybe more. Yah?

You missed the first waterfall, you didn’t go down. Also the way going up, we went to the way you said not to, we didn’t go we’re you go up to the crater 😄, and yes it was scary.

    • @DennyandNikki

I think we showed up around 7:30 AM and snagged the last spot. This was during the pandemic, so you may need to go earlier now.

what time did you arrive at the trail head?

    • @DennyandNikki
      @DennyandNikki  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Aloha! We arrived early right after sunrise. The parking is limited at this trailhead, so we'd recommend doing the same. I hope this helps!

    • @DennyandNikki

That sounds scary man! Getting lost on a hike in Hawaii is not fun, its deserted, no cell reception with lots of mudslides!
