    Absolutely amazing. I have a nest just outside my patio sliding door on a bamboo shade. Got still pics of the dad and mom. I was going to take the shade down and looked up and saw the nest! Wow!

    Beutiful video. I have raised many different wild baby birds in Connecticut that fell from the nests. Yellow finch, cardinals, canaries, doves, blue jays, sparrows, house whrens, and so on. I have the house finch in my yard and they sing beautifully. Thanks for this beautiful images of nature in action. Birds are here for our joy.

    Thank you so much for caring about these creatures so much you would take the time and trouble to film their lifecycle. Most years, house finches build a nest in my eves on the back patio. I live in San Diego. Unfortunately, some thing came along and knocked down the eggs and killed them before they hatched.. Great video. The sound and visuals are so clear. Now I know more about the whole process. Some brave finches have returned and built again. I hope they have better luck. The first ones came in April. now it is early June.

    23:10 poor dad has gotten trichomonias in his eye. Common in house finches. And he keeps going even though he’s not feeling well at all. That’s why you don’t see him around all the way to the end of the video unfortunately. They are some really great parent finches!

    I'd love to know if the runt made it out too. I have a House Finch nest on my porch right now with newly hatched chicks. This was a great way for me to see what's coming up! Had no idea it was going to be so messy! Oh well. We have a tiny camera mounted above the nest from the porch ceiling. We installed it before she laid her eggs. It's been so much fun watching the progress. ***** I'd like to note- that while I don't agree with touching the birds, this man seems to really love and appreciate them. I don't think he meant any disrespect. UNLIKE MANY OF YOU WHO CHOSE TO NAME CALL AND LEAVE RACIST COMMENTS!!! You all need to check yourselves. And a lot of people whose first language is NOT English use the word shit and do not realize it is considered inappropriate by people who do not tolerate profanity. I don't think he meant to offend.

    I love House Finches. They sing my favorite birdsong. In the background of your video, around 0:16, I also hear a California Towhee's single, loud, metallic "chip", as well as the song of a White-Crowned Sparrow. Nice video!

    Wonderful video, and who cares that he pet the birds. Its not like he hurt them or the mom disowned them gee whiz guys. And the runt may have just hatched a few days later than the others. Is what it is its not like it died, it was just a day or so behind the others. Forget all the nitpickers!! Again, great video!

    WOW ! Thank you so much you are making this video ! I've had been and found 3 babies with nest at back my yard 4 days ago. Unfortunately, Wind was blowing so hard so our tree was broken and same time nest was falling down to the ground. So I don't know what to do and trying to watching in case parents are coming back that I was searching on Internet, but parents didn't coming back. So next day I'm calling to Living desert ( wild animal rescuing place )and took there and let them to taking care of these guys. Because they are seems like weaker ..............But Thank you again ! I was so fascinating if they are fine and I could watching their growing up processing. Now I know how to Parents are feeding and frying themselves finally !! This video was perfect for me and very good timing !!

      i just rescued 3 baby house finches the other day when we had 30 mph winds that lasted several hours. it jacked the nest up, so i had to tie down the 10' arborvitae bush to keep it from continuing to blow sideways. i had to re-position the nest twice & I had to put all 3 babies back in the nest... they look to be about 10 days old & just checked on them yesterday... all 3 babies doing fine & parents busy tending to them. looks like they still have 2-3 weeks left.

    Lovely video. I'm so glad you set up a camera and left it. I just had a similar situation, with finches over my door, but didn't dare intrude for fear of disrupting them. Still, I could hear each time the babies were fed-- they made such a racket! LOL! But it was a beautiful sound.
    But they get big SO FAST-- just 8-9 days later, I happened to be out on the porch and looked up to see 6 finches, with the babies testing their wings, fluttering all over. I didn't dare move. Within the next day or so, they were all gone... now I just need to clean the nest.

  • @kind2311

    Great video! About a month ago, I had a house finch family start a nest and lay 4 eggs in it on my front porch here in San Diego. They were there for about 2 weeks and one day I came out and the nest had been pulled down and all the eggs were gone. My guess is one of the many red-shouldered hawks that hunt the area got to it. Hope he enjoyed his eggs!
    At the beginning of your video, around the 0:13 second mark, you can hear the loud *CHIP* of a California Towhee. They like to make that unpleasant, repetitive sound starting around 430am and continue until the sun comes up.

    • @somacruz7759
      @somacruz7759 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      That whole "touch a baby bird and the parents will reject it because of your scent" thing is a myth. Many species of birds have a poor sense of smell.

    • @flashlitestriker4028
      @flashlitestriker4028 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ColonelCustard Did you see Soma Cruz's answer to you question? I used to believe that myth, too, that if we touched baby birds their parents would disown it because of the human smell. Then I began to work some with bird rescuers/rehabbers, & found out that myth wasn't at all true! I've seen myself birds reunited with their Mommies & birdy families, AFTER I'd touched & cared for them, then brought them back to their birdy families, they take right back up where the'd left off, no problems whatsoever. Such a beautiful comfort to find out & know that birds DON'T "hold that kinda grudge" against us peoples!

    • @alvaroakatico9188

      Cynthia Stryker You’re absolutely correct. I wonder how that myth started.

  • @avarywood9308
    @avarywood9308 7 ปีที่แล้ว +61

    Birds rarely abandon their young if they catch even the faintest whiff of human on them, that is a myth that has been passed around for generations. Most even believe that if a bird has fallen out of its nest, you must then on take care of it because the mother will not. Just pick it up and place it back in the nest, the mother won't reject it. Most birds have a limited sense of smell, and mostly watch for visual dangers and not olfactory. Its still not entirely great to touch the young due to diseases, ect. But it isn't detrimental.

      Coffee Owl I wish I had knew this thing. I found a baby sparrow on the ground yesterday. I thought may be she fell from the nest but still her mother was feeding her. She wasn't grown enough to fly. It wasn't a safe place for the baby and as the mother was gone for too long ( She was flying away in search of food over and over again ) it left the baby in danger. So I just picked it up carefully and put it back in the nearest nest (backside of our house) baby instantly jumped in and I thought it must be her house ( I decided not to take it to my home because I didn't want human scent on it, I was afraid if she would be abandoned by her own mother) but OMG ...... I found her injured in the evening again on the ground. Her head, beak and neck were injured) I picked it up and took it to my home. She survived the whole night but next day while taking it to the bird doctor .. she couldn't make it 😭😣 that poor little tiny baby took so many attacks. GOD She kept fighting for her life, she wanted to live. I feel really guilty 🤦‍♂️and responsible for that... god forgive me. 🙏
      PS- I wanted to share my story because I didn't know this fact otherwise I would have taken it with me to my home at the very first time. 😑 I WISH...I WISH I COULD SAVE IT!!!!

Birds have multiple clutches of chicks a season...there’s no way they can discern which is weaker etc...it’s really nature....some are weak and don’t survive...some are strong and then get eaten by other birds or predators etc....it makes more sense the feeding is randomly distributed or just random...there’s no thought in the bird other than feeding the chicks.

    For someone who found a chick, what do they eat? Worms? Red wigglers dead or alive? What temperature need to be the artificial nest at? How many times a day they need to be fed? Thanks.

    Did one of the earliest maturing birds, which looked female, share her food with the runt instinctively?

    8:46 wasn't mommy looking for food. That was a female sparrow. Notice how the female sparrow doesn't have brown spots in it's chest and it has a lighter brown stripe from the back of the head to the eye.

    Its better to watch from a distance and not disturb the nest and baby birds. I know its tempting to touch the birds but I hope in the future you will stop poking/touching baby birds and leave them alone.

      Male house finches are pretty different from male house sparrows
      Female house sparrows don't have the streaks and have a stripe behind the eye
      And their wings are a more vibrant brown

    One thing to remember about baby birds. You should never touch them or even get close to the nest once they are old enough to have grown most of their feathers and are starting to move around in the nest. The reason is that they will bolt from the nest when they see you get close and will not be able to fly as well as they would have been if they had left the nest on schedule. This will significantly cut down their chances of survival. That is most likely why the first two fledglings in this video left the nest when they did. The guy messed with them too much.

      +Mike Foley no :) They were ready :) They can fly at that stage :)

    • @mikefoley3785
      @mikefoley3785 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Stefan Domovski --They appeared to be still two or three days away from leaving on their own when two of them suddenly disappeared.. Sure they can fly a little bit at that stage, but house finches can generally fly pretty well by the time they leave the nest if they are not disturbed and made to leave early. Even a day or two early makes a difference in the survival rate. You notice the film does not show them actually leaving the nest. I believe this is because the guy caused them to leave by sticking his hand in the nest, which he does several times in this video. I've had house finches on my property leave the nest early on several occasions when people got too close to the nest to check it out. They are much easier for cats or crows to get if that happens.

    • @stefandomovski
      @stefandomovski 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mike Foley Yes but At that stage they can fly really good :) First two were more than ready :) In fact it's very common for young birds to leave the nest before they're ready to hit the skies.
