If not already, Ólafur should consider movie scoring. He definitely has the compositional technique, mood, and sound to occupy that space and thrive. Brilliant musician!
I love how during “We Contain Multitudes” the other members of the group just sit there in silence and take it all in. When I saw him in Brooklyn you could hear a pin drop when he played it and I’ve just never experienced that at a concert before.
His music affects me like no other. It is so intimate with hints of hopeful melancholy. Every time I listen, I feel in communion with the space present between all of us.
You’d actually be completely fine if you were born in a reality where music didn’t exist, because you wouldn’t know what you were missing out on. You’d have no concept of music whatsoever.
Man, I've been doing music for as long as I can remember, and my lord, I've not cried like that to a piece in literally over a decade, maybe two.. for someone that cries very rarely.. these tears were pure.. thank you.
Thank you Olafur for reminding me of this quote with your beautiful music. "Peace abides with me today....Abide with peace and receive its blessings. Come to peace with all that troubles you. Come not seeking answers....not seeking understanding....seeking its blessings. Peace cannot enter into a life of conflict, but you can enter into a life of peace. You come to peace, which is waiting for you, and in this your burdens will be released....Practice then receiving. Peace abides with you today. Today abide with peace." (Steps to Knowledge, New Message org)
Fresh air and light after a long, hard winter... Sending love to everyone that survived... and sadly to those that did not... like my dad. Love you pops. Miss you.
The way Olafur composed the piano and song lines around that archaic tribal singing from the phonograph is so amazingly beautiful. The achingly beautful music + the modesty of Olafur makes it almost impossible not to love the guy...
During the first song, the moment he stops playing and turns to face the other musicians you can tell he doesn't just hear the music, he feels it. And it comes across all of his compositions. It's so difficult to explain to others but his music expresses emotions better than even words can in such a universal manner.
this is so immersive and beautiful. i am so entranced by the very unique sounding, warm, and mallet-heavy pianos. and the acoustic rawness of the musicians as a collective gives so much charm and mystique to the compositiions. also the sound of the keys clacking + muted strings for pianos have always held a special place in my heart. i'd take those over bright and short grand pianos anyday
I was waiting eagerly for this one. His music is so very evocative and emotionally charged, it transports me to the shores of Iceland anytime I listen.
Finally! Olafur is on Tiny Desk. This had to happen after that beautiful album that came out in December, Some Kind of Peace. He should have a session where he performs Back to the Sky and Undone. The two being thee most favourite for me on the album but overall the entire album is a Masterpiece. Love and Light Everyone!
Saw him perform last night in San Francisco, and it was just wonderful. They played a beautiful version of Woven Song where the violins took the melody line that Herlinda Agustin Fernandez sings on the original. It worked beautifully.
I was at his Brooklyn show and they did that same thing there. It was the first concert I’ve ever been to where you could hear a pin drop in the audience throughout the whole show, everyone was that captivated by him and the music.
While listening, I had the same feeling watching a craftsman working on raw material and seeing their creation progressively taking shape while being certain the outcome would be a masterpiece. Thanks Tiny Desk.
If you have a chance take a listen to a well recorded live rendition of Says by Nils Frahm or almost anything from Finally We Are No One or Summer Make Good by Múm
I feel as though the music captures something very deep in my soul- as if someone had taken a picture of me without my knowing it and showed it to me. Thank you, Ólafur!
You channel my hope for all things that are good.. this is the music that gives me hope for everything.. this is home... thank you for this.. all of you.
Always stunning. The last concert I went to before COVID was to see Olafur Arnalds in November of 2019. I was living in Zagreb, Croatia at the time and went to this performance by myself. Everything about it was breathtaking. The music, the atmosphere, the lights. Everyone was packed in there and enchanted by the music. I’ve since had to relocate and move back to the US from Croatia. But seeing Arnalds in concert is one of my fondest memories of my time living there and pre-COVID days.
If you havent, listen to the album, especially the continuation of "We Contain Multitudes" and "Undone", somehow Olafur was able to put something so powerful, something beyond words, our love, our humanity, our consciousness, in those 2 songs.
If it's his legs (Karl's) that the viola player. The violist. Bigger, deeper, richer, warmer, more human sounding than the ethereal high-pitched violin. Essentially an alto violin. Think of alto flute, how its sound compares to regular flute.
The moment, when my heart open for this type of music, I know, in my deepest soul I´m not alone! And it helps through the darker moments with a little light. And it shows me, here and now, thats all what we have!
After a long time (too many sad memories, which were connected with the songs) I'm hearing Ólafur again and it is as wonderful as ever! Thank you, again!
Yes. Olafur arnalds. This is all I wanted from a tiny desk home concert.
@@lizziventura2836 u ok?
He did one before this as well. In case you didnt know
@@jimvandersteege You're right! I have watched it multiple times but somehow this still felt like a novelty. Thanks for reminding me!
Wonderful 🤍
If not already, Ólafur should consider movie scoring. He definitely has the compositional technique, mood, and sound to occupy that space and thrive. Brilliant musician!
He’s done a couple of TV shows (Broadchurch / Defending Jacob (Main theme)
He also did the movie "Gimme Shelter".
he also has a few pieces in Nomadland
Listening to Happiness Does Not Wait I thought he did the score for Arrival haha
@@squidly413 The Bottom Line does have that same undertone of On The Nature Of Daylight which is great.
This is his second tiny desk for those of you who don’t know. Check out his first one too!
thanks for the heads up! I've been a fan of his music for years and somehow didn't know this!
@@SeanStephensen enjoy! His first one (and of course this one) is amazing.
Thanks @Dude

His music affects me like no other. It is so intimate with hints of hopeful melancholy. Every time I listen, I feel in communion with the space present between all of us.
I feel exactly the same 🙏
So beautifully said.
Beautifully apt description:)
Hopeful melancholy... what a lovely word.
Hopeful Melancholy... A beautiful oxymoron I will be using
Every piece of his music has a way of soothing the recesses of my brain that are constantly running in circles.
Perfectly described❤
Jean-Michel Jarre once said something like : “it’s easy to make depressing music. To make happy music that’s hard...”
I couldn't say that better.. 👌🏻
Not a doctor but might be the coffee...
So much to achieve in so little time.
It’s like meeting an old friend you never knew. Haunting. Beautiful.
Every time I listen to Ólafur's music, my soul is healed.
Imagine a world without music, I would rather not exist at all🥺😍
We should vibrate in similar spaces if you’re based in South Africa (Johannesburg and Cape Town)
not worth imagining Mothusi, its too painful a thought
AMEN!
Here, here. I would've died without music, a long time ago.

Bravo, just bravo
It's like time has slowed down and all of lifes pressures have been lifted when I listen to Olafur's music.
Hope you read this olafur. My students have made examiners cry when they ve used your music for their dance solos. Cry, big people tears.
So awesome! As a teacher, I found your comment very powerful and true. Big people tears. Healing and cleansing tears.

you should also check out his "a sunrise session" live video and his "island songs" performance movie!
How are people so talented and humannnnn too.
4:20... I was sold, can't get over it..
If my soul could make a sound it would be this song .... My heart beats to this rythem
It is as if we see angels float up and down from the heavens.
His hands are shaking so much and he looks so lost in what he is playing, such a pleasure to listen to
It is my first time listening to Ólafur. This music transports me to a place of peace
this must be what peace feels like
I love this guy!!! Just Beatiful!
Thankyou,
Your work is beautiful
Gracias Olafur..
The way the strings sound... magical.
Woven Song reminds me of the Sacred Valley and my friend Matilde a Inca-Shipibo elder, pure medicine for the soul.
