Currently I am taking online courses in Coursera. I totally agree with you that self learning needs a purpose, but not just money. And your video about Google analysis certificate is really helpful.

That's right, but what if the only purpose you're learning the course for is money? Is It very wrong to earn money by learning helpful skills? I don't get it...I mean, I do love things and try to enrich and improve it, but sometimes, the motivation is money, am I right?

I think this is some really solid advice. 8:16 I think personally I would encourage persons while doing the course to come up with their own additional projects. It could be just a slice of the project or the entire thing (if small enough). Another tip is definitely looking at other people's code and reverse engineering any bits and pieces you like.

Oh my God, I was just thinking that students who go to medical schools will always be a doctor, no buts. I read the description, and was shocked you're one of the very few medical students who don't want to work in the field of healthcare. I'm an IR graduate who's very sick of political science so I want to try out something different. I'm taking a lot of courses online (not as many as you think, but it's like I'm attending a college without interacting with a lecturer directly and self-paced courses mostly), and i've been enjoying them so far. i want to watch this video and ill add a note on my thought about this video.

I didn't get into the master's course I was hoping to get into, and I thought that while I was waiting for a decision from my back graduate school, I thought I would level up by using online courses in cognitive psychology and neuroscience. But as you rightly mentioned, your motivation does determine your ability to succeed. However, because the area is something I envision myself going into, it made enrolling and subsequently doing the courses much easier.

    Tina,
I absolutely love your approach to data science. It looks very efficient and doable.
Years ago, there were endless amounts of terrible advice. Most involved doing too many courses, books, etc. for hours on end without focusing on application/projects, getting a job, etc..
I tried learning Python 2 years ago but ended up quitting because it took too long to go through all the books/courses and get to a job-ready point. Now I realize a lot of it is just smoke and mirrors and that we all don't need to be perfect and understand everything 100% from the start. Now I realize I should have been focusing more on doing projects and less on finishing all the exercises in the books.
Really appreciate you showing valuable knowledge that most people would hoard to themselves.
    Thank you!

Learn information and do something with it.
Have a (good) reason for doing things.
    Some good reasons :
    Better your life tangibly.
Having a reason and a goal serves as a motivation.
    Create your resources.
Have a mentor in the field that is closer to you.
    Do projects, like drilling.
Structure thoroughly and put things together visually.
You like the instructor or the materials used.
    Create accountability. (Social accountability)
    Keep à compelling score board.
Acquire a skill and not just complete a course.
    Skip the fluff.
Sign up for interactive learning programs. (kaggle, etc)
    Learn flexibly and optimize.
Take note on the main things, not copious notes.
    Keep the reference locations noted.
    Watch at 2x 3x speed.
Pause seldomly to avoid a cut in learning.
Do active recall to better synthesize info in your words, to better internalize.

Hi! I’m new to your channel and noticed that you took a gap year to work full-time before doing a masters degree. I just graduated from UofT with a life science bachelors too and will be working full time for a year or 2. I was wondering if you’d be open to making a video on your experience applying goy to a masters program after a gap year from graduating undergrad, especially reconnecting with professors for reference letters and going into a new program unrelated to your undergrad degree! much love ❤️

Finding lead measures is hard because you often don't know what you don't know. How am I supposed to come up with a comprehensive list of all the things that I need to learn for a given topic? The best I can do is say "I did 4 hours of work on day 1" or "I completed day 1 out of a 7 day online course"?

this is how i do it.. i wake up and pour myself a nice cup of java. My beige trench coat is way too large but my head is enormous so thats ok. I live in Seattle and I am a java coder. You’ve Got Mail is my favorite movie. Sleepless in Seattle is my second favorite movie. I’m imagine that i am Tom Hanks while i do my java coding. I take a nice sip of my java and look down at the garfield comic. I’m just thankfull that it’s 1996. I love women with perms. If i didn’t have a dark curly mullet and receding hairline,i would have a Perm. the license plate on my porsche 1911 says j a v a. just cruising the ol’ Information Superhighway. i just love being a c o d e r. i stylishly ja v a code and then meet up with my friends for brunch. we all are wearing light colored jeans that are to big and too small and the same time and also checkered shorts and also beige trench coats having a nice stylish cup of seattle j a va and eating e g gs benedict and pasta salad and sun-dried tomatoes. we huddle in a circle and start chanting “j a-v a”, “ja- va”, “T om - haNks”, “ toM hAnKs”. god i love being a c o der.

Yes please do a video on note taking. I am so poor in it. I am also confused how to take notes. Wheher to listen first or take notes while video is playing. I take hours to finish a 1 hour video. 😥

8:46 I literally stopped one of my certifications because of a really annoying instructor who didn't care about screeching mic noises, mumbled/garbled delivery and literally would eat during lecture. This was a digitally delivered course at a local school (not coursera or any other online platform). Still makes me mad thinking about that person.

IF I have a project in mind should I watch the bit of the video and think how to implement it in my project? OR should I watch the entire course once to figure out exactly what all things are possible? and then start working on the project? OR first work on the project that the instructor is teaching exactly the way he is teaching and then once completed work on your own project? Which approach out of these 3 will you prefer?
