Fly Tying: Flexible Extension - Weedless Bass and Pike Flies

  • This style of tying is an adaptation of Derek Filkins HPU - Hook Point Up - series of flies, where he uses Masion's Hard Mono for the extension. This was only recently brought to my attention and will be noted for future videos tied in this style.
    Hey guys, this is an updated tutorial of my Texas Hook Shank Extension video - this update allows you to tie on an extended shank and give you the freedom to tie a multitude of patterns on a Weedless platform, yet the extension, when bumped, will simply flex out of the way. Because the extension utilizes Titanium Wire, it will spring back into place every time, without worry of being kinked, drying out, or being cut by predator teeth such as pike/musky.
    Hook: Ahrex Hooks 5/0 Texas Predator
    Shank: FlymenFishingCo 25mm Fishspine
    Wire: Knot 2 Kinky - 25lb
    for smaller hooks and sizes I'd recommend decreased wire strength for more flexibility and less resistance.

    For economy, a #10 mustad 3xl nymph hook, snipped off at the beginning of the bend, right above the hook point, replaces the manufactured shank for no cost. I tied a folded foam gurgler style head in front of a froggy looking bunch of rubber legs and olive grizzly hackle on the shank. Thanks for the idea Gunnar!

    I had an idea similar to this a few months ago, but never got around to testing it, opting to tie saltwater flies for an upcoming trip. I don't do enough bass fishing to warrant spending time perfecting an idea I had. So when I saw this on instagram, I was all like "Cool, someone tested that idea for me!"
    But I take all that back.
    Your idea is much more refined. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it makes mine obsolete. I was originally thinking of using a mono extension with like 80lb mono, but this is genius. I much prefer your execution. Once it warms up around philadelphia I'll be tying up some frogs and bass flies with this method.
    Thanks so much for the share, Gunnar!

    Gunnar, this is a brilliant idea. I really like the way that it is so flexible and weedless. I can see a myriad of applications for this technique.

    What an absolutely brilliant idea, a simple solution to an issue that has always bugged me and many other tiers out there that have come from the bass/conventional world first. I have always wanted to tied a weedless frog with the hook up (I did one hook down with spun/stacked deer hair, mag bunny back legs and knotted rubber fronts, but it is tough to cast), design a salamander/lizard, weedless worm, and I have tied some fluke like patterns including your keeled jerk and one of my own design. I worked at Cabela's in the fishing and fly fishing dept for 10 years and the titanium was right in front of me. Way to be a problem solver once again. I am interested in how it will work with some ideas and also I hope that frog works out, I am not familiar with strung fuzzy fiber and its properties to help it float unless that is a diver frog, or you tied some foam underneath if needed so it will float. I am sure it will be worth the wait, happy testing. Tight lines.

    I know this is an unrelated question, but how do you decide upon what head to use especially when using a commercial head (I.e. fish mask, sculpin heads) and what are your two go to sizes? Thanks! The videos are fantastic and the tie like a pro series is awesome!

    Gunnar I am a total newb. Can you explain the knot you are tying at the 6:40 mark of the video? Or if you already made video on this provide a link. Thanks!

    • @Gunnar_Brammer
      @Gunnar_Brammer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man, the knot is simply a "Whip Finish" if you're familiar with the tool - I just use my fingers instead. A Whip Finish is essentially a series of Half Hitches - both of which should bee searching on the TH-cam for more info. Hope that helps man.

    Hi Gunnar, you're a very generous and innovative tyer. Awesome idea, but why not use the Senyo shank with the up turned eye? That may eliminate flying shanks, glad nothing bad happened. Is it the availability of length in the different shanks? I haven't looked at all the specs of their shanks yet.
    That SFF Frog 🐸 is awesome, as all your work is. Can't wait for the tutorial. Have a joyous Easter 👍😎

    Gunnar: When you are tying the steel leader material onto the front hook and then add a bead & second hook... I notice you do not double back the ends of the steel leader and tie it down. You just cut it off straight and tie it in. Have you ever had the steel leader pull out from the front hook?

    • @Gunnar_Brammer
      @Gunnar_Brammer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never had it pull out, and have been tying it that way for the past 5 years or so. Something worth noting is that I use 140 Power Thread, and 150 GSP most often which allows me to tie with a lot of pressure - which will gouge into the nylon coating of the wire and stop it from slipping - if you were to use say 6/0 thread or something you would not be able to tie with enough pressure to compress this nylon coating and the connection would not be secure. When using a flat thread you can also spin the thread clockwise which will help focus the pressure and compress the nylon as well. These thick threads are more crucial than anything, the superglue added afterwards is more so to reinforce the joint and stop the wire from ripping through the thread where it attaches the two hooks - not necessarily to glue the wire to the hook shank....ect....
      Hope that helps.

      I buy mine online (I'm from Canada) from Bass Pro and Cabelas. Greatest pike leader ever (with a butt section of Maxima Chameleon 40 pounds). You can throw massif fly (stiff for best turn over and light) with that setup and you will never loose a fish.
