    For people who may not know this is an adaptation of James Clavel's book Shogun. A fictionalized telling of the life of a real English sailor named Will Adams who arrived half-dead in Japan along with the remains of his crew during one of the most pivotal years in Japanese history: 1600. This was in the middle of a massive power struggle that would decide the future Shogun and fate of the country for centuries.

    The original miniseries got me interested in Japanese culture and history when I was 8 years old. The show always aired at Christmas time and transported me, a nerdy German child that was super into knights and castles, into a different part and culture of the world with a totally different concept of knights and very different-looking castles. This was the 90s in East Germany and we didn't have the internet, satellite TV, anime or manga so this really blew my mind. It actually led me to studying Japanese Studies later, graduating with a Master's degree, and living and working in Japan for 1.5 years. I love this story and am beyond excited to see it adapted anew.

    For people who may not know, this is chronologically the first of six books of James Clavel's Asia Saga. The saga begins in Japan in the year 1600 with the book Shogun and ends in Iran 1979 with the book Whirlwind. Most of the saga is about how a Scottish company survives the tumult of history.

      @@juang.4718 My opinion, from best to worst: 1. Tai Pan, 2. Shogun, 3. Gai-Jin, 4. Whirlwind, 5. Noble House, 6. King Rat.
      Shogun is great, but Tai Pan is epic. I give Noble House fifth place, but it really wasn't too bad. The only reason why I wasn't as interested in Noble House is probably because 1960 is too recent for me. Stock markets and Russian spies - it is not bad, just not as much of a historical context as I would have liked.
      King Rat isn't nearly on the same level as the rest, and you could really leave it for last. If later you find you don't want to finish the entire saga, then at least it was King Rat that was left out.

Which is crazy because I only watch it when I was in my 20s (I'm 34 now) so it has an entirely different vibe to most modern day TV series and movies, yet it blew me away. So I hope this can live up to the same caliber of the original TV series.

    I read this book in High School and have always considered it the first book I ever read. It was the first one I read voluntarily and somehow came to understand it. It ignited within me a passion for Japanez culture and reading books, particularly historical fiction. I remember connecting with the characters and their relationships so closely, and my mind's eye had created this world and the people. It was as if I escaped and traveled, that's when books clicked with me.
    FX was once known for amazing shows (i.e. Sons of Anarchy, The Americans etc.). I imagine this retelling of Shōgun will only be loosely based on James Clevell's book. I just hope a great story and characters aren't sacrificed for "ideological elements" which has become too common in shows today and almost ruining them. This Shōgun could be a masterpiece and open a great story to a whole new generation. It certainly looks good based on the trailer.

    God I want this to be good. As a Japanese historian, I know the many historical creative liberties James Clavell made in his novel, but this looks visually beautiful. Reading Shogun got me into being interested in Japanese history in the mid 1980s. I'd seen the mini-series, but the book hooked me. Only after learning more about Japanese history did I realize how grossly inaccurate the book was, but it was a doorway for me and I'll always have a soft spot for it.

      There’s a reason why games and books love using this period after all

      @swordmonkey6635 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      @@SteventheShoehanger Japanese historians (like myself) consider the cultural and historical accuracy of Shogun about a 6 on a 10 scale. Medieval Japanese history is deep and the "time of samurai" romanticism of mid to late Tokugawa Japan as well as Neo-Confucianism having a very prominent role in Tokugawa Japan caused a lot of rewriting or reinterpretation of Sengoku Era and earlier event to better justify the military dictatorship. Toranaga is often pointed to be Tokugawa Ieyasu, but there is a fair amount of Oda Nobunaga in him as well. Shogun is an entertaining book, but the more you know Japanese History, the more flawed it becomes.

This was on purpose to put you the audience in the POV of Blackthorn who also did not understand them and was desperately trying to figure out what was being said by reading eyes/faces and body language. It turned even the most boring and mundane conversations into scenes where you were hanging on every word even when you didn't understand. Also Mariko in the original story was a very well written egalitarian character She used her physical weakness as a woman to her advantage because the men did not view women as a military threat so she could travel to places Toranaga couldn't go and spy on his enemies and relay important messages helping him to become the Shogun. Marika was also a much older married woman the actress playing her looks too young.
