Legendary casting director, Mark Teschner, has been the man responsible for just about all the new faces you have seen on ABC's General Hospital for the past 34 years.
This past weekend, Mark officially became a 2024 Daytime Emmy Silver Circle inductee which celebrates those individuals who have made enduring contributions to daytime television.
Teschner is a 10-time Emmy winner, and was nominated for Outstanding Casting again this year at the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards.
Now. Mark chats live about his Silver Circle honor, some of his GH casting coups, how he found some of GH's most popular stars through the year, what he looks for from an actor during the audition process for a soap opera, and much more.

LOVING THIS INTERVIEW!! ❤ That's my friend Mark of 25 Years! One of the Greatest Casting Directors and His love for Actors and the Process Shines through!
Michael, I also could speak for hours with Mark. He’s so positive about his work.
Amazing interview. Thank you
Very interesting interview. Thank you.
Congrats GH! Wow Winning all the time. Good for them!
Thanks for sharing! I love hearing about the process behind the scenes. It would be so fun to see some of the older auditions.
Every actor interviewed who has auditioned with Mark speaks SO highly of him. So I was excited to watch this and was not disappointed!
Another insightful interview, thank you for doing what you do, Michael. I've heard so many actors rave about Mark and it's fascinating to hear about his casting process. Very grateful for the look behind the curtain, Michael!
It’s really shameful how Mark brushed past Tabyana, barely talking about her. He was quick to praise Evan, Eden and Giovanni (who has been on the show for a 2 months versus Tabyana’s 2 years on GH) He spent ample time praising Nicholas. When it came to Tabyana, he made the choice to cast her aside. It shows how Tabyana is not only a victim of misogynoir and disrespect from fans of General Hospital; but, also, with those in leadership positions behind the scenes of the show
What about how he brushed past all the other stars he mentioned briefly?
She sucks lol that's why
You guys he hardly talked about Evan or Gio either he talked more about eden so what
@@heathertapper-gq6pk he said how Gio came in for another character and how they loved him and created a role for him. He said Tabyana auditioned for Trina and got the role. It speaks volumes of how now that NAC is gone you don’t see her. She is on prop duty. She has not had scenes with her mother in 5 months. She lost the love of her life. Since when is that not shown on canvas. She is only in scenes with Joss and now this Gio kid. It tells me they do NOT care about her, her character the popularity of the character or her many fans that want to see her. Karma will get this show. ALL of them!!!!
As an objective viewer who started GH in 2023 this was my take: He spoke of Eden because she has been on the longest of the YA group. Dex and Gio are new characters (not recasts) so it makes sense people would be curious about their casting.
Tabyana was brought in because Sydney wanted to leave. That’s the story. What did you want him to say about that?
Did you want him to say bad things about Sydney? Tabyana wouldn’t be there if Sydney hadn’t voluntarily left for college and she was next on the list. The turnaround was quick from what I read. There is nothing else to tell.
Chavez was brought in as a SORAS Spencer. It was a legacy character and people wanted to keep Nicolas- but they went in a different direction. Makes sense they would explain that. That’s all I got from it.
What I don’t understand is why does some so called gh fans have to pick apart every aspect of the show. When mark talked about gh having auditions for a 15 year old possibly someone to play Jake’s friend. Fans on social media immediately went to Giovanni mazza and how he looks 15 but that’s just the thing he does look young but not 15. Also Giovanni is about 20 years old in real life as he just had a birthday last month so that would make him around josslyn and Trina’s age. I think whenever gh doesn’t do or cast someone fans approve of they make up stories about things that are not really there.
Exactly!
Okay, I guess the story of Tabyana Ali's casting must have slipped his mind. Well let me remind him because she deserved more than just a "Tabyana auditioned for the role she got" comment. There is a whole backstory to her getting this recast role after auditioning for it some 4 years prior when she was 16. He must have forgotten how they remembered her when the time came for the recasting of the role about 4 years later. How her talent, charisma, and that "it" factor had them casting her in a role that was always meant for her. He waxed poetic about every other young adult, including NAC, with whom she helped expand the juggernaut known as Sprina worldwide. The fact that this man could not manage more than the one line musing he made about her is just so disappointing and sad. Explains though why we are seeing what we are seeing when it comes to the character of Trina, especially over these past five months.😢
Well said. I’d also like the fact they fired the one writer of color to be addressed!
And look how long he talked about Gio who has appeared on screen maybe 3 times?
That's certainly a weird interpretation. He clearly meant TA got the role she auditioned for, she just didn't get it first. The troll campaign in the comments here is really uncalled for. TA is a great talent who took the role of Trina to new heights, and everyone knows that, which is probably why they didn't feel the need to go any deeper. Same with the mentions in this interview of Tony Geary, Laura Wright, Genie Francis and others. Stop looking for disparagement where it is crystal clear that none was intended.
Some on here need to stop mark is a ten time Emmy winner he knows what he's doing not some nobody's complaining on the internet
@@heathertapper-gq6pk no one needs to stop anything. Everyone is entitled to an opinion
Adam Huss is a nice upgrade too. Nikolas should be onscreen. Enough w/ this bs save Heather crapola.
They danced all around saying anything about Tabyana Ali except that show did audition for her part. Shame.
I cringed at that. Such sweet words and thoughtful commentary about everyone but her. Interesting how someone who’s only been in 3-4 episodes is looked at as a good find that they scooped up. But Taby, is just a person who fit a casting description.
Mark knows Tabyana isn't good, they were desperate when the other actress left & needed someone fast, so they took her, she's not a good actress.
Stop FFS that's not what he said stop the racist bs and Michael is directing the questions
@@heathertapper-gq6pk Reading through the statements and I don’t see anyone calling him racist. The only person highlighting that distinction is you. And if you don’t feel that way, no need to even bring it up…
@@heathertapper-gq6pk interesting. You are welcome to your opinion. Thank You and have a great weekend!
I would love to know why he cast a 38 year old actress to play Jordan, who is supposed to be 50! In other words, Tanisha Harper is currently 42 and she plays mother to Tajh Bellow, who is currently 28! That means Jordan was 12 years old when she had TJ? 🤪
I wanted to know that too. I'm always thrown off every time I see Tanisha and Tajh together. I almost think that's why they don't get alot of scenes together because they don't want to remind people she is really too young to be his mother. I hate that because they really should have more scenes together. Every time I see Jordan - I forget her character is supposed to be close to 50. It's so confusing. Not to say that there aren't women that can look that great at 50....but clearly Tanisha is not 50....haha. Brook Kerr who plays Portia is in her 50s so she is proof you CAN still look great.
I find it particularly interesting that Mark has difficult time looking for a recast. With 30+years of experience and him saying how he thinks he is a better cast director now than back when he started. This is the same Mark who flopped when it came to recasting a new Molly and went through several recasts.
This just goes to show that you can obtain a position for decades but still fail.
I would have loved to give Mark credit for finding Taby but you said nothing. No story for me to give credit.
I'm just grateful to a God she found her way onto our screens and we get to witness her rise.
If Mark is failing at what he does, we should all be so lucky. He is not responsible for the crazy circumstances around the MOlly recast, and it's really shitty of you to blame him for it.
@@AlanDavidDoane
Per his own words and title as casting director he alone is responsible for the duties of finding the talent. The responsibility falls on him. If me pointing out that fact with the example of his singular instance of a failure irritates you oh well. It is the truth and a fact. You're not going to like it. The truth isn't always easy to swallow.
If it helps though, replay this interview where he lists his own successes🤷🏾♀️🙂
@@ZLforLovenGod Evidently you don't understand that the producers have the final say. The casting director gets to lobby, he doesn't get to vote on who the final choice is.
Exactly and they thought the first Molly recast would be short term so the actress had other things lined up.they didn't expect Hailey Paulo's to screw them over
@@AlanDavidDoane
Frank Valentini's been known to be the cancelation EP (i.e. OLTL.) Full of bad decisions backed by white men in power. This does not mean Mark is absolved of responsibility or accountability.
Tabyana ali deserves Better
Better than a contract role on TV's best daytime drama? Well, why don't you give it to her?
Give it a rest, TA is a mediocre actress, she's not good at all, she's lucky she has this role.
@@mariel4085 I don't agree with that at all, I think she's great, and it's clear Teschner does too. I don't know where these trolls came from acting like TA gets mistreated in this interview, these people are delusional.
@@AlanDavidDoaneBeing disappointed in what this man had to say, or in this case, not say about one of the most popular YA actresses on this show is not trolling. Tabyana has one of the best casting stories, but yet the 30 year casting director could not see fit to share one but of it. Yet the other three YA she was pictured with, their casting stories were shared and their talent praised. Sorry, that was not a good look for him. No amount of replies your posting is going to gaslight people into believing what they heard was wrong. In fact it seems you're the one doing the trolling.
@@mariel4085As if you could have done better in this craft?
can’t stand adam for jagger
Really? I think hiring someone who can actually act is a huge improvement for the character of Jagger.
Exactly love Adam Harrington Antonio should never come back we don't need another ingo
So you have nothing to say about Trina and her talent. It speaks volumes about how this show treats her. It’s so sad. This show will get its karma.
Um, this interview is not about Trina, and he spoke very highly of her when he mentioned her, just as he did with Tamara Braun, Laura Wright and others. Sorry it's not The Trina Show you evidently were expecting, it was an interview about casting GH, and it was excellent.
@@AlanDavidDoanewhen did he speak highly of her? He said she auditioned and got the part. Meanwhile he goes on about GM & NAC & others. Considering she was half a next gen super couple you’d of thought he would’ve said more about her and Sidney. There aren’t that many young black actresses on daytime. That could’ve been a conversation.
@@indiramosley3340 TA is great, no question. The troll campaign to make that point here is a little sus, however.
@@AlanDavidDoaneIt’s seems like you just felt the need to speak up but you said nothing. He did gloss over her compared to how he spoke about others.
marcus is SO much better than Adam…
Well, that's just facts. I do not understand why they let him go.
Disagree. Adam was a step up.
At what? Not "acting", because he barely blinks.
@@Mr21scott lmfao are you kidding? Your boy was let go bc his castmates were acting circles around him. He stood there with his mouth open, while twiddling his thumbs. The very green NAC scorched him. He was also a schmuck bts. Adam is a breath of fresh air. He can actually keep up w/ his scene partners, he can actually emote, and he's an unproblematic sweetheart to boot.
