We have conscription (exclusively for men, sadly) and the drinking age is the same as your duty starts, 18.
I've been drinking beer on a daily basis since I was nine, so the first 'legal' beer wasn't really all that amazing.
Besides, isn't the age of 18 the perfect age to enlist in the army (where applicable), since the whole ordeal sucks more the older you are to enlist. We only practice defensive warfare, since there's absolutely no reason for us to attack anyone, so there's not so much tension of whether you'll be shipped out to fight wars no-one wanted in the first place.

I'm from NY and recently I was lowkey stranded in Times Square and spent the rest of my money at a concert. I kept going to ATM's and they were all broken. I realized there was a strip club/gentleman's club nearby so I decided to use their ATM. I went into the vestibule and asked to use it and the bouncer was so taken aback- I'm a tiny 17-year-old girl and he's probably used to frat guys and middle-aged men with failing marriages.
Long story short they didn't have an ATM. Worst strip club ever. 0/10 would not recommend.

@@4Everlast Yes it is and some people will misuse it and become addicted. But they're a minority. Some people over eat and abuse food. Some people pass their driving test but then drive like a maniac. There will always be people who over do something. The answer isn't banning it or restricting it for the vast majority of people who don't go too far. Prohibiting something makes it attractive. Especially to younger people. And of all countries the US should know all about that. It's ridiculous in the US you can own a gun, have sex, work in porn, go to war, buy a house, basically be an adult at 18 but you can't buy some beers or a bottle of whiskey. I also find it ludicrous that in some states there are counties where the main industry is producing whisky but it's illegal to buy or sell alcohol.
If you create an situation where people feel they have to sneak off and drink behind closed doors you have an environment where things can get out of hand. I'm not American but have been there several times. I'm older than 21 and definitely look it. I was staggered to be ID checked buying alcohol when it's obvious I'm old enough. I've never been ID checked once in my own country. Weirdly though when I was buying cigarettes in the US, there was no ID check, which out of the two is more harmful and addictive. If you want to treat people as an adult at 18 let them drink.

Heri Eystberg No, I mean 35 is way to old for enlistment, soldiers need to be in their physical prime, and 35 is far to old. Also that means that upper NCO’s and Generals that need time to work up the ranks will have probably have passed the mandatory retirement age before they get to those upper ranks. Meaning promotions will need to happen quicker, which leads to worse, less experienced NCO’s and executive staff.
Also keep in mind the military is all volunteer now, the last draftee retired a few years back, so the men and women serving our country did so on their own wish to server.

  • @thezekroman
    @thezekroman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +346

Fun fact for those interested, the reason the drinking age is 21 is that used to be the legal age of adulthood meaning that was when you could vote, get drafted, etc. However, the draft age was lowered to 18 in order to recruit for the Vietnam War with the voting age being lowered soon after due to pressures of people saying it's wrong to force an 18-year-old to fight in a war that they couldn't vote for.
A similar argument was made for the drinking age saying that if these adult responsibilities are being thrust upon these teenagers then they should be allowed adult beverages as well. However, this decision was left to state governments resulting in some lowering it and others keeping it at 21. This resulted in so-called "blood borders" between states that had different drinking ages where 18-year-olds would go to the neighboring state to legally drink but then would have to drive home resulting in a high number of DUI-related fatalities at these borders which gave Congress the need for a national standard. MADD then lobbied Congress to set the drinking age to 21 thinking that the DUI fatalities were the result of the younger people drinking in the first place and either being ignorant to or ignoring the incentive set by the differing states.

Coral Day if you aren’t from one of the “blood border” areas (the most important being Chicago due to its proximity to Wisconsin), you wouldn’t understand why. There are signs about an underage drunk driver crashing ~every couple miles of road. Wisconsin was the last holdout for 18, both due to their heavy drinking culture and the fact they could make money off the million+ under-21s in the Chicago area looking to drink. Finally the government got them to fall in line by threatening to withhold highway funding.

I thought the 21 year drinking age was to reduce alcohol-related accidents. The 5 years after getting a license was needed to make driving more automatic and reduce the odds of having an accident even if intoxicated.
I thought the drinking age on military bases used to be 18, but was changed to match state laws.

As a result alcohol wasn't a big deal in my teens and beyond and I never cared about drinking. I've gotten drunk before but not ever to an extreme. Only got sick once and that was at a friend's birthday party mainly because he got some really good moonshine and it caught me by surprise how strong it was. Lol

Buy as much alcohol as I wanted and then go into the back room and let me have at it. She claimed it was so I wouldn't drink and drive, but now I think it was covertly so the rebellion of drinking would be taken away. It worked. I never asked for the booze and I never really got into drinking.

There was always booze and weed in my house growing up. It wasn't forbidden. My parents just sat me down and said they trusted me to make my own decisions, that they will tell me this or that is bad - but like them as kids, I likely wouldn't believe them till I tried. They then said that while they wouldn't get mad at me for under age drinking or smoking, they would be disappointed in me.
That was pretty much all I needed. I could deal with angry parents, but parents that gave me trust and I disappointed them? Heeeeelllll no.

And even though I was allowed to drink, you could just sense how weird Americans are about it. Everything had to be some sort of drinking game or be about how you could get drunk the fastest. You know, the stuff you care about when you're 16. I even received a warning from the uni because I was drinking in a dorm room where a 19 year old kid was sleeping in the other room. When I cam down to to Austin for UT in 1972, the legislature had, quite oddly, dropped the drinking age to 18. This, predictably led to some problems. So when I was 19, they raised the age to 19 and by the time a was 21, the age was back to 21. Thing is, they didn't let the thing run its course. Things would have settled down in due time once everyone got more used to a drinking age of 18. Thing is, here in the US we simply don't teach kids how to drink. We just say, OK, you can now go nuts with it at 'x' age. This really doesn't work well.

  • @mightymystery9204

I recall when a parent could give a child a drink at home, or even let him taste one in public. It was part of parental training, same as supervising the use of tools, matches, money, or vehicles. I personally believed it was wrong to jail a parent for giving his teenager a beer with a meal, when the same teen, in presence of friends, would quaff all he could at an illicit party, because this opportunity was rare. I saw my share of drinking tragedies, be they poisonings, or crash victims. It made no sense whatsoever.
Prohibition itself should have taught us. Organized crime got strong because of prohibition, and huge numbers of citizens became criminals overnight and began to rub elbows with real criminals, just to get a commodity that was legal all their lives. Here's another bit of fallout, which actually did occur: many policemen said that if beer became illegal, it would be easier to hide a joint or a pill, with no alcohol breath anyway so, since it was all illegal, the drugs would be easier to get away with. I watched how the drug crisis rose after the alcohol crackdown.
I would gladly see the age for any spirits drop back to 18, the age for supervised use of 6% or less be 16, and the age with parental supervision 13 or older, or a sip permissible over age 10, just as with cough syrup. This type of action works in Europe, and their society is less violent than elsewhere, so it may be time to try.

Anything done for pleasure/relaxing (like alcohol) - has to be restricted as long as possible, anything connected to duty/suffering/upholding conservative ideals (like marriage, military) - allowed as soon as possible. There is method to their madness

“...parents need to teach their kids responsibility.” The funniest thing he said. Parents will NEVER teach their kids responsibility, because that would require that they get off their asses and ACTUALLY do some parenting! It’ll never happen.

What came to my mind here (kinda related), from an outside perspective the fact that you can drive at the age of 16 and (correct me if i'm wrong) you can do driving lessons with a parent, not a real instructor, always concerned me. Not to be generalizing here but that's atleast discussable

    • @EvanDerickson
      @EvanDerickson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

In my state at least (Washington, probably similar in most other states), you typically get an instructional permit at age 15, which allows you to drive while accompanied by someone with at least 5 years driving experience. To get this permit, you need to either enroll in a driving course or pass a written test on the road rules. To get a full license at 16, you still need to pass both written and driving tests. So while it's true that you can be taught by a friend or relative in lieu of an official course, you still need to demonstrate knowledge and ability to the state.
What I really wish we would do is retest adults every 10-20 years, and more frequently for the elderly. There's a lot of people out there who have either forgotten many rules of the road or don't care.

driving age varies from state to state. most states are moving towards not giving out a full license till 18. before then they can generally get learning permits or licenses that restrict what time they are allowed to be on the road and whether or not a licensed driver is required to be in the car.

Thanks for your input guys, so there definately are various safety measures If you look closer and it's not as unregulated as someone would stereotypically think. Still i stand with that the general age should/could be raised, as you pointed out states are moving towards which imo is good.

@@erics7435 I don't see any state actually raising the basic license age from 16 anytime soon. rakninja is right that there have been increased restrictions on teenage drivers in the last decade or so (for example, I couldn't have any other teenagers in the car for the first 6 or 12 months that I had my license, unless they were immediate family), but the fundamental age to drive solo will probably not change.

I totally agree, I always thought it was a bit silly that the legal drinking age in the US is 21. In my country (I'm european), the legal drinking age is 18, and it used to be 16 years old (till 2015 when it was raised to 18).

We have it at 18 in my country, but no one's really enforcing it. Most teens here start drinking at around 14 or 15 years old. On booze ads we just place a "Drink Responsibly" at the end.

I started legally drinking at age 16... i am 24 now and only drink on the occassional get together with friends... whats my point? I was at my alcohol consumption height at age 17-18 and learned how to drink responsibly after that. Also -> my body learned how to handle being black out drunk and rehabilitate from it...

If this mentality was present when discussing marijuana we could really make strides. To be fair, if to much hazing doesn’t kill you, to much alcohol can totally pull that off.

My mother use to let me and my friends drink at 16, she would always ask my friends parents if it was ok. It was great, we got to have a few beers and have fun. My mates parents and my mother was happy because we where usually in my shed (was our chill spot). We where safe and supervised. The only other option apart from not drinking (wasnt going to happen) or drink down by a river in a field.
I'm glad my mother let us do that

In the UK the drink laws mean kids can be given drink from 5 and even drink in pubs with parents and a meal. I had done every drink by 16 and even got massively wasted long before it was legal. By the time I was 18 I knew what drinks went with each other and made me a good barman as a part time job. I saw so many drunks I never emulated them once it was legal for me to drink. It was nothing special once I was legal to drink. Still a light to moderate drinker even now.
