What would have happened if Israel did nothing on October 8th? Can the "war" in Gaza be called a "moral war"?
Bret Stephens argues on this week's episode of Liberalism in Question that the "war" in Gaza is an "existential war" for the survival of Israel of the safety of Jewish people internationally.
Bret Stephens is an Opinion columnist for The New York Times, writing about foreign policy, domestic politics and cultural issues. Dive in as we explore the idea of liberalism in America and the greater conflicts in the Middle East.

No. One is an academic with a theory based on observations. The other is someone who makes money by writing their opinions based on feelings. Dershowitz vs Mearsheimer would be more interesting.

On the contrary I think the current political climate in the States shows the strength of the system. Trump was president for four years and it did not affect the average American much, Biden has been president for almost four years and it hasn’t radically affected the average American. Both sides of the political aisle have claimed that America is at its end and going to collapse, of course depending on if your guy is in the White House, amd yet we persist. The economy is going great guns, our troops are not firing shots in anger any longer, unemployment is down, the pandemic is over, America is the lone superpower now that China is declining. No matter who is at the helm America sails on.

This man's description of conservatism as an outgrowth of liberalism is at odds with many US conservatives. US conservatives keep many religious perspectives where in 2014 most conservative politicians were uncomfortable with gay marriage in Australia liberals passed it into law. Conservatives in the US are also anti-abortion, anti-immigration for labor or education, anti-UN, anti-OSHA, and anti-EPA. But maybe that's what Australian liberals support too?

Israel is in trouble. Its trouble comes from the fact that it is surounded by extemely hostile people. What can israeli do? Their options are limited.

Israel has a peace treaty with Jordan and Egypt. It needs a peace treaty with Palestine. It's doable. It misses the opportunity to make peace with the communist Arafat. However, it's still possible to make peace with the islamist Hamas.

The hostility is from Israel. I was tortured in Israel in 1990, I was 14. You don’t know the truth. Palestinians are living under Israeli military law. We are treated subhuman. The Israelis project and have victim good. The harm and cry victims.

@@MahmoudWaz I am so sorry for the way you were treated as a 14 yo. How much was that a result of the first Intifada and Israel's reaction to the attempts to wipe out the the State of Israel in 1948, 1967, 1972 and the continued threat to Israel's existence posed by Hamas, Hezbollah and, to a lesser extent, by the PLO and their "Martyr's Fund" and continued support of hostilities against Israel?

@@barrypollack2079 Please read the ethnic cleansing of Palestine by Israeli historian illan pape. It was Israel who tried to wipe out Palestinians in 1948. Then Israel attacked Egypt in 1956 and 1967. Israel is the violent, aggressors.
