    • @TheNthMouse

      True. Though it does raise the issue: why don't they conduct the bombardment after the shield is downed?

    • @ArcticWolf00Alpha0
      @ArcticWolf00Alpha0 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Ultimately, because it wouldnt matter in the longrun. By the time the Shield was down the Empire already has infantry on the ground, General Veers walkers, Countless SnowTroopers, and multiple scout walkers, at that point bombardment is illogical and ultimately they might as well just take the base. If they tried to bombard it they run the risk of killing their own men at that point.
      Usually in a combat sceneiro, even in real life ones, particularly in WW2, if you cant bomb it and have to use infantry instead, then your never gonna bomb it, its pointless.

    I actually hate what he's done to parody, and I find it insulting to the history of literature itself.
    The first major parody in European literature was also its first modern novel. In 1605 and 1615, Miguel de Cervantes released parts 1 and 2 of Don Quixote de la Mancha, about what everyone knows as a madman who believes he is a knight, who fights battles that aren't real. Those who have passing knowledge of the text would know *why* all of this is so. Don Quixote was the first modern novel because it cared about making sense. Continuity, characters, motivations, all of it comes from Cervantes' frustration with the proto-stories that were popular at the time, which were "tales of chivalry" that didn't have any of this. The first chapters of Don Quixtote explain that he went mad because he read too many of these stories that didn't make sense and became unable to understand reality because he accepted that things just happen in order to generate an emotional response.
    Knights who wielded swords that ended up being lances on the next page, fighting friends and foes for no reason other than that knights exist to fight. The names of characters would not be consistent, and a child in one section could be an old woman the next they meet. A dragon on one page would become a fairy on the next. A single stroke of the sword would somehow cleave mountains. And the Hand of God could be seen everywhere, intervening on behalf of our heroes other than that of the whims of the writers. This is what the Literary Dark Ages were. This is why Don Quixote can believe that the windmills are secretly giants because he expects the turn of the page to make it so.
    As a parody, Don Quixote worked so well because Cervantes could write on both levels; he could construct the story that actually made sense and use Don Quixote to recreate what other stories might attempt. He practically did what others in the present do now; to write the story for the authors and create sense from nonsense. And he did it all to prove what Rags says in the present, about "How about it also makes sense? Why not put that effort in?" It's parody because it understands the source so well and can point out its flaws just by recreating it. And he changed European literature forever, and for the better. We care about our stories more because we know what happens when they don't; they revert to "holy texts" that cannot be questioned directly because of the accusations of blasphemy. They will say it is all opinion and there is no factual basis of anything and that God has graced them with the proper pedestal, not the blasphemers who dare to pick a text apart by what is actually written on it. Do not worry what the masses say, the *real critics* are here to tell you what has been ordained!
    The online presence of people like AT-AT exist to revert our rich cultural run of 400 years by attempting to revert this core idea back into another literary dark age. To see him attempt parody in order to revert what good parody has wrought is repulsive.

      That was a good read; I didn’t get Don Quixote at the time, i totally missed the context there. Thanks

    • @afelias
      @afelias 4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@samwallaceart288 Oh man, you might want to give it a read at some point. They "beat" Don Quixote at the end of part II and convince him to live a normal life by propping up their own champion, the Knight of the Moon, who beats him in his own game. Cervantes really modernized fiction in this argument about "making sense" because in the end he says it is internal consistency that is necessary. We do not need to impose that things must be "real", but they have to be "the same kind of real" that the other person might believe. They make this risk to join Don Quixote in his madness to do it and succeed. This finally gets through to his head and he has to accept it, because his internal view of reality allows it to be. It gets really meta a lot like that.

    • @nathanjora7627
      @nathanjora7627 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ehm... Shouldn't satire be also a form of parody ? Which would make the art of parody date back to... At least as far back as greek antiquity ?
      But I guess your argument may hold for modern european literature specifically ? (I'm not any kind of expert on literature, just asking)

    • @afelias
      @afelias 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@nathanjora7627 Oh definitely. I'm talking about European literature. If you look at "first novel", there are many more long and complex stories that existed before Don Quixote.

      @@afelias I know you were talking about european literature, that's why I mentioned greek antiquity and not... I don't know, sumer or something like that.
      As I've said I'm not an expert on literature so to me european literature means just literally that, so how big is the difference between "european literature" literally, and european literature as you used it ? Was there a difference or am I just really dense (which is far from being impossible, english isn't my forte and the history of literature and its different classifications, especially in other languages, isn't something I've studied either, even if we were taught the great movements in art, literature included) ?

  • @gamefan987

    Just now I realised ... we all know that sequels make the OT pointless, but now with ep9 even the prequels are pointless. Think about it, it's 3 movies about how Palpatine manipulated the republic to get an army and conquer the galaxy.
    In ep9 we find out that there is this huge cult that can build the biggest fleet in the galaxy. What was the point of all that scheming ?

    • @dragonknightleader1
      @dragonknightleader1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      The running joke I have about the sequels is that most people actually want the Empire back and that the Resistance are the secret bad guys.
      The head canon I wrote up is that 5 years after the RotJ,* the New Republic causes a depression because Empire contractors like Sienar Fleet Systems and Kuat Drive Yards couldn't get any work as they were deemed "collaborators" by Leia and Holdo. So, when they heard the First Order was hiring shipwrights, engineers, and scientists to build the Starkiller base, they agreed because they could finally make all those blueprints like a better TIE or miniaturizing Super Laser technology. Since all these smart people invented more efficient power sources to use that minaturized tech, First Order planets became first galaxy nations because they effectively have the Star Wars equivalent to Lockheed-Martin and Heckler & Koch working for them.
      Meanwhile, the New Republic is run like the Soviet Army where Commissars have all the power due to political connections instead of ability. Holdo wears a dress because she's a Commissar and outranks real officers despite not technically being part of the chain of command. Said Commissars are also the ones who handle the business of ordering new gear for the Resistance, but because they don't know what actually works on the battlefield, they issue orders and designs that don't make sense, hence the Resistance bomber. It technically does the job of dropping off lots of ordinance, but isn't fit for battlefield service because people like Holdo didn't ask the right questions such as "how fast is it? How armored is it? Can a squadron provide overlapping cover fire for each other?" Such widespread incompetence causes the New Republic to become a galaxy-wide CHAZ. Thus the demand for the Law and Order of the Empire created by Sheev Palpatine created a widespread "cult" following.
      I thought of this because I decided on a whim to try to make sense out of Sequel nonsense.

    Luke does not use the Force to guide the torpedoes in the first film. The theory is only mentioned very briefly as an aside during this episode but it's a weird one for people who watched the originals when they were released. There is absolutely no way anyone would have thought Luke was using telekinesis 1977.
    The targeting computer is essentially depicting the equivalent of second war bomb site. It's there to tell them when to press the trigger. Obi-Wan tells him to trust his feelings rather than the targeting computer. Luke doesn't guide the torpedoes, he just fires them when his instincts tell him it is the right time to do it.
    It's a scene about someone trusting their own experience, skill and judgement rather than doing what a computer tells them to do.
    Luke as the film points out has been hitting similar sized targets all his life. It's that training and him opening himself to the Force that guides him into releasing the torpedoes at exactly the right moment.
    After that it's just like the WWII combat that Lucas transferred into space, the torpedoes are unguided.
    It is human ability and spirituality doing something that the computer failed to do. It's a motif that hit home with a late 1970's audience, which had very different experiences of computers and technology to anyone who watched the prequels as children, let alone the sequels.
    He absolutely isn't nudging the torpedoes into the exhaust port with the Force. No one would have thought that at the time because they hadn't seen Empire. They'd never seen a Jedi call his saber to him or move anything with the force.
    It was relating to the concerns of the time. Automation was costing people jobs. Computers were starting to appear in the work-place but were slow, unreliable, difficult to use and the province of a very few highly trained nerds.
    It was about turning the machine off, and trusting yourself, the old ways (the Jedi protected the Republic for millennia) and your connecton to life and nature (the Force). Obi-Wan is a spiritual warrior monk, not a "space wizard".
    You've also got to remember that the Lucas of 1977 is an independent film maker struggling under oppressive yoke of the studio business men who have funded the project. Turning off the computer (corporate) advice and trusting his own (artistic) instincts would have had rather more significance for him than his hero guiding the torpedoes with magic powers.

    1:48:55 Luke did not use the force to guide the missiles into the Death Star. he used the force to know WHEN to fire. i commented on this on another video, but up it comes again. he talks earlier about it not being impossible to hit a target that small (hitting womprats), and another pilot gets very close. it is unreasonable and illogical to send out a bunch of fighter pilots with the hope that one of them might be force sensitive to get the torpedoes in. Luke turns off his targeting computer, connects with the force, then fires. he is then immediately relieved, knowing he fired at the right time, all before we see the torpedoes go into the exhaust port. the torpedoes do their job when fired at the right time. please stop making this point.

Either way, I agree with your overall point. Luke did not guide the missiles with the force. He can barely call his lightsaber to him at the start of Empire, so he definitely doesn't have the ability to move objects that are under thrust in ANH.

      Also the little visualization of the mission they make during the Yavin briefing clearly shows that the torpedoes are intended to be fired parallel to the Death Star surface, as they’ve been programmed to arc 180 degrees.
      It’s not an ideal method in the slightest for firing them down a tiny hole, but obviously this is a desperate do-or-die situation where they’re having to make do with what they have. Y’know, since unlike the Resistance they don’t have a n e n t i r e g a l a c t i c r e p u b l i c behind them.

      @@HasekuraIsuna the interpretation is either that the torpedoes were designed to make that turn (however goofy that is), or that the Y-wing pilots and Red leader were all known force users of the rebellion. The only way to decide which is to take into account all of the remaining evidence of the film.
      In favour of the 90 degree turn (or to put it another way, torpedoes that didn't require the force to guide them), we have:
      - the briefing scene. Pilot says it's impossible to hit the target, and Luke claims he did it back home all the time
      - the other pilots all using targeting computers to make their shot. They clearly believe that the technology will work and they are not banking on a literal miracle.
      - the briefing scene again. As the comment above already states, the briefing shows the missile trajectory bending 90 degrees.
      In favour of all the pilots using the force:
      - .....? I have nothing, and their reliance on the targeting computers when our only known force user makes his shot without it kind of proves that they don't have the force.

      It doesn't even matter. No one knew what a Y-Wing was before they watched the OT, but they were in that. I think that right there is the exact mentality that so many people approach these movies with. As MauLer mentioned in his Star Wars Cannot Grow Up video, people decide what a piece of media should have in terms of products based on how many people recognize it from a previous thing. It's the "I know what that is!" meme if it was an Infinity Stone. If people won't recognize it and fangasm, don't include it. Ships in Star Wars now don't have a strategically useful design and they're not used intelligently as per that use in order to gain an advantage in battle. They're used as props that all operate almost exactly the same in terms of "big/fast thing that blows the enemy up, sometimes combine them both" in order to get people to react to them. If a Y-Wing were to be included in a modern Star Wars movie, you likely wouldn't see a fleet of Y-Wings organizing a coordinated and well-timed bombing run on a vulnerable capital ship/Imperial base to ease the fire on their X/A-Wings. You'd see the ship model of a Y-Wing firing a torpedo to shoot down a Tie-Fighter, basically doing the exact thing an X/A-Wing does.

Which is a really bad thing for a visual medium because every time the viewer has to do that, you are forcing them out of the story on screen to think about what the hell just happened, weakening their immersion in the story itself.

    The line from Obi-Wan in A New Hope can justify pretty much all force powers provided they wouldn’t have been useful in the prequels when there are Jedi everywhere.
    For those who don’t remember, the script is as follows:
    Obi-Wan: Remember, a Jedi can feel the Force flowing through him.
    Luke: You mean it controls your actions?
    Obi-Wan: Partially. But it also obeys your commands.
    It’s vague enough to me anything, but when grounded to reality it makes sense as an extension of a person’s abilities. If you can pick something up and through it then the force can let let you do that without having to touch it. Most people can’t pick up hundreds of rocks at once. Also most people can’t perform necromancy either. Force lighting is the only force power in the OT that doesn’t make sense but the Sith are kinda into their dark magic and evil shit so it’s not too bad especially after the prequels and expanded flesh out the Sith more.

    So 2-3 years have past since ANH and ESB and Luke has basic understanding of the force trough Obi Wan.
    In ANH Darth Vader strangles people through the force, which is a telekinetic ability.
    So pulling a light saber out of the snow is not a new force power pulled out of nowhere, it's also a telekinetic ability. Also Luke had enough time in between movies to get a grasp of the basics of the force. Seems a pretty okay explanation from what is in the movies.
    Also I don't mind Force Skype calls per se, since Leia and Luke could communicate through the force, so it's an extension of that ability of sorts, caused by the mind probing of Kylo on a Jedi.
    Only the passing of physical objects through it can't be rationally explained and would require explanations.

It is not light years of distance like in the sequels.

      Would have been much stronger if Luke instead used a loop of utility cable to lasso it (using the Force to nail the shot in the pinch where the Wampa starts moving). Then, when Luke learns telekinesis from Yoda, it fits in with the idea that Yoda is broadening Luke's horizon for what the Force is / can be / can do. Even more, when Luke recovers his saber at Cloud City, it's a setup-payoff dynamic. On top of all that, the utility cable and use of the Force would tie back to where we left off with Luke in the original film.
      Also, nothing in the film says that it's been 2-3 years. In fact 1-2 years is a naturally more reasonable reading, because they've been on adventures in the meantime, but Solo owes a major debt to the kind of people that break your legs when you're 12 months late on $20,000.

But contrary to what the sequels and to an extent the prequels show us, the Force wasn't a superhero power that made its user godlike or something. The Force was originally more connected with the strength of the human spirit, which is inherently more powerful and ressourceful than any piece of technology no matter how large and destructive it might be. Vader speaks about "the ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force," and Luke destroys the Death Star after Obi-Wan tells him to switch off his computer. Star Wars is a really well written story, with the power to inspire and lift the human spirit.

      High five, Thor Skywalker is the man!
      I personally would've done a single "A Star Wars Story" movie dedicated to show how Luke, Leia, Han and the galaxy as a whole is doing decades later after ROTJ, but other than that I would've left the Skywalkers in peace in the other films.
      Tho if in this alternate universe people like the post-ROTJ spinoff film and Mark Hamill is up for it, I'd continue the story with Luke still kicking around with the new characters.
      As for my ideal Sequel Trilogy, the main conflict would've been a new Light Side vs Dark Side and a Grey Area Force users in the middle.
      My Jedi would be heroes that fail but want to do the right thing, my Dark Side users might be bad people but with some noble/intriguing aspects in their personality, whereas the Grey Area anti-heroes are the more complicated and are probably the ones that suffer the most by the end of it because they can barely stick together.
      In the first episode the new characters are introduced, in the second we see how they gather their own armies and escalate the conflict, and then the third movie would be the final showdown.
      I thought it'd be interesting if in the beginning the Grey Area Force Users are the more united group, but as the story goes on the new Jedi and Sith get stronger and more united while the Grey Area Force Users increasingly become more dysfunctional in the midst of things getting larger scaled between Light and Dark (who knows, maybe a Grey Area character regrets their past actions and join the Jedi to seek redemption, or they want more power and join the Sith) until they fall apart.
      Or maybe in their obsession of coming on top they become a bigger threat and the Light and Dark side users must join forces to stop them.

      @MarvinFalz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DeepEye1994 Okay, that sounds like the larger context in the storyworld, where different factions relate to each other in the way you want to describe them. As I understand your outline, the personal motivations and decisions of your characters to act are connected primarily with them being Force-Users in their respective faction. What seems to be missing are personalities, humans who interact with other humans in a human way, but I'm sure you have already thought some personalities up. :) In any case, the inclusion of a third faction, which seems to be in between light and dark, is novel, as far as I know. As I write this I have to think of the three Imperial factions in the game Morrowind (basically thieves, warriors and mages), and maybe it would add some variety if the Grey Area Force faction would be something differing from the monkish Jedi and the criminal Sith.

    Doubt you'll ever see this, but I just felt like putting my two cents in on the AT-AT battle on Hoth.
    I might be able to offer some explanations for why the AT-AT would be created. I am a huge fan of the Star Wars EU, so all of my explanations will come from there. I dont know if this mixes with Disney's canon because I have no interest in it, but in the EU vehicles fly due to repulsor lifts. In a situation where the repulsors are disabled due to technology or extreme weather that could damage the repulsor, it would make sense to have a vehicle that does not rely on repulsion. In that instance the AT-ATs would be an option. Plus these are large troop transports, so they would be very effective ferrying your ground troops into battle to destroy the shield generator. They are also scary as heck. In the EU the Empire built weapons to be more demoralizing than necessarily practical. All vehicles and ships were built to adhere to the Tarkin naval doctrine. The main gist was to terrify the enemy so much that they would never dare stand up against you. So they made a lot of vehicles that filled the enemy with a sense of dread and hopelessness if you saw it on the opposite end of the battlefield.
    Now for the scene where the AT-AT is blown up. If you listen carefully you hear Luke say "That armor is too strong for blasters." Meaning there are not shields, it is protected by strong armor only. If you watch the full scene when it falls you can see the plates around the body fly out away from it. Openings would be made for the speeders to shoot at weaker areas that had previously been covered by the armor. Therefore the speeders can now blow up the AT-AT by hitting the newly made weak spots in the armor.
    As to why the AT-AT pilots may not have stopped moving, it might be because until the tow cable is completely released from the speeder there is plenty of slack in the cable. It is not really restricting the movement of the legs much when you watch the part where Wedge is feeding the cable around it. It only constricts when it is detached from the speeder. Speeders have been flying all around, strafing and being a general nuisance so far, so none of the actions taken by the speeders would seem out of the ordinary to the AT-AT pilot. They would realize what happened too late to stop it.
    I know it doesn't answer everything, but I hope it was at least interesting. Love your guys stuff!

      Good post. I would also add that the reason why the Rebels were using Tauntauns is because they don't lock up in severe cold like the snowspeeders would have. That's why they were not deployed to find Luke immediately before nightfall. Also, I assumed the AT-ATs were like trucks and can't stop on a dime. They're slow and lumbering, which also means stopping that much mass takes time too.

    But he gave us the "Luke Dies" opening, so I guess we're fine.

      Honestly getting to watch, or listen rather, the next day is better so you can pause and rewind and not feel like you're missing anything. I'm one of those people if I can watch the whole thing live, ill watch it later. I'm not dealing with the "fuck I have to leave" or in a situation where I cant listen on my phone.

    3:00:00 i do believe that the neck part is weak to blaster fire, it is a common part of the at-at, being used in battlefront 2 (2005) and other games
