I'm a big fan of Ritchie Blackmore but I have to say fair play to Joe Satriani. He stepped in with not a whole lot of notice and smashed it on stage.. Great work Joe...
Without a whole lot of notice is an understatement. He had maybe a week to learn the whole set didn't he? They even did songs Ritchie refused to do with JS.
Not only can you hear what Satriani brought to this brief era of Purple that enhanced Lord Paice and Glover as players, but very obvious that Gillan said to himself "I better be fit and cut down the drinks and smokes. We got Satriani playing with us.!"
I seen this tour. Satriani was amazing. Completely reinvigorated the band. A breath of fresh air. The band loved it. Satriani loved it. The fans loved it.
for a band that has released many live records, it's a shame there wasn't one from their time with Joe (or even a decent video). Thank god for these bootleggers :)
I agree. I guess the reason was simply Joe was just a replacement for the tour and the disc company had already spent the money to produce a video for the same tour while RB was still with them.
@@Javier-qk7ms probably yes, but it's a pity because this concert is a championship. Joe is between Ritchie and Steve in his style, plus he has a masterful technique. Would have loved at least one record with Purple and Joe and a tour following that. Joe has a unique sound much like Blackmore. Could have been Deep Purple's heaviest record with Satch at the helm.
Ritchie Blackmore was just going through the motions during that last period, so when Joe Satriani came in and was obviously super stoked to be there and could play his ass off (and is just a super nice guy), it lit a fire under the band's ass. They sound awesome here! Great concert!

Same goes for Steve Morse too. Also never forget, Satriani was just a temporary replacement when Blackmore left the band in the middle of a tour, and I think he did a fine job in that.
