Hi sorry for the late reply. The a99 has a slight delay but its notably faster than the nex-7. For battery life, I haven't tried it when just shooting raw but you'll get between 400-500 shots. For autofocus, its a tad slower in lowlight but its extremely accurate. AWB sometimes gave a warmer tint in artificial light and I found myself changing to a 'cool white' preset every now and then.
You're completely right on that. Even though its not advertised as a weather sealed lens, I've had it work perfectly fine in heavy rain with no issues.
Awesome camera, awesome review! I bought the a99 to replace 5D mk2 and I'm very impressed. It's super fast, handy, lightweight and convenient. AF is snappy, accurate and fast. EVF works fine even in low-light. Colors are clean and vivid. Rotating screen is very helpful in reportage shooting.
Yes I would. The a99 does offer some unique features to make photographing subjects a lot easier. The EVF is great because essentially what you see is what you get when taking a photo, the articulating LCD screen makes shooting subjects at different angles easier, in-body stabilization so any lens you attach is automatically stabilized whereas the Canon cameras have theirs in the lenses and not all of canon's lenses have stabilization. Those are a few but let me know if you have more questions.
NIce review, John. I'm in love with mine and between the articulating screen and very precise autofocusing during vid, it's a no-brainer. The 70-200G is every bit as wonderful as the SAL2470ZA and... the bomb deal is the Rokinon 1.4:85mm manual focus for $269.99 @ B&H or Amazon. Incredible!
Would you recommend this as purely a video camera? I just use the Canon G7X, but I dream of a full frame camera with the same articulating screen. But how does the video compare to say the Sony a7, a7s or dare I even ask the a7s II? lol. Seems like the Sony a99 is the only one with a flip out screen?
That's a hard question because they all offer different things. My suggestion is to way up the features of each camera and see what fits your needs perfectly. For me, I love the quick autofocus and peaking mode on Sony's cameras.
Nice review John. I personally use a 5D III but wouldn't mind an a99. Very innovative camera however I can't seem but wonder if Sony will do this somehow without the SLT. Now that would be something!!! If they were able to it would seriously hamper the Canon and Nikon camps. Canon drives me crazy with their pricing they don't give anything away. You're quite good at making this videos again very impressive.
Depending on the lens I'm using, I'd set the aperture wide open at f2.8 or larger and if its very low light, then ISO 3200 or 6400. Shutter speed varies depending on what I intend to shoot.
Nice review John! a99 is a beautiful camera indeed. Just wondering if you are going to review the new Carl Zeiss 50 mm 1.4 lens? Waiting for your review and then decide if I will buy it or not?
You're losing about 1/3 of light reaching the sensor but with sensor tech getting better, it doesn't really bother me. Actually if you buy the a99 in the US, you won't have the option to change between ntsc and pal.
Wow, I really like the song the pianist was playing. I'm hoping to get the Hasselblad HV DSLR within the next few months which is the same thing as the Sony a99.
I am currently using an A77 and am in the process of purchasing the camera for the full frame capability. As you are a user of this camera, do you think I will see a significant enough difference in image quality to warrant the expense of the camera?
I am wondering a bit how much the loss of light does to the camerea, if it really hurts the picture quality/speed. And well with being able to choose with ntfs/pal it would mean that you can buy the camera anywhere in the world I guess?
What a wonderful review. As usual. My question is I noticed you had the clm-v55 on the camera and still managed to have the LCD displaying while the 55 was on- care to share how you did this? My a99 and a77 both shut off both the Evf and LCD when I connect the clm. It's always been an annoying thing, and seeing as I just purchased the bm hyperdrive shuttle 2 I would like to have the option for uncompressed hdmi without always having a field monitor. Thanks again! Wonderful review.
Hi John, when I shoot with my A57 I can only change Iso in big jumps, like 800, 1600, 3200, 6400. But it looks like you have a lot more choices here on A99, I saw you pass by 2000, 2500, 3200 or? Cause when I shoot I dont always want to jump all the way up to 3200
i think it's about time sony releases the much awaited A99 II...currently using the a77 and eagerly waiting to see how sony improves on an already really great full frame camera...
Speaking of full frame.. I have a NEX6 and been looking into the metabones speedbooster to get that full frame quality. Just wondering if you've tried it out and/ or what are your views on it? Great review anyway!
I shoot a Canon 5D Mark ll (and love it) but I've been thinking about the Sony after it caught my eye from a video I just happen to stumble upon. I've been thinking about using the a99 along with my Canon. I liked the walk through and the personal feed back you gave on this camera, nice job. I'm going to explore more on this camera, thanks for the video.
Sony lenses that have “DT” in the model name are compatible with APS-C format SLR cameras only, while all other lenses will work with both APS-C and 35mm full-frame format cameras. But A99 Takse DT lenses in cropmode as well
Hi from Toronto (Canada) John! I've got an A77 that I'm afraid to get wet! When I saw you dump water on you A99, I asked myself: "does that Zeiss lense also have water protection?" Please answer. Thanks! Howard
you should have done a fast pan because i think there was some jello effect going on but your pan was too slow to tell. regardless, this thing is in dire need for some image stabilization when it comes to video.
Hi John, thank you very much for your videos, they are very informative. I have the sony alpha-99, what would you recommend as the best all around lens for photos as well as video the Zeiss 24-70?.n The camera body was given as a 40th birthday present from my brother. I am more familiar with the Nikon camera system. kindest regards Rajeeve NZ
Hi John, just wanted to confirm something. You say the A99 is good for 6fps at full resolution, what resolution would it push out when doing 10fps and does that mean the A77 isn't doing 12fps at full resolution?
would you recommand it over a 5d mk iii for someone who doesnt care about video? where i live, there is not many shops where i can try it so i can only buy it from internet.
Hi John, the A99 has a few years on the market ... it is advisable to buy ?, or is it better to buy the A7 II or A7R? ... Or maybe wait A99 II ?, greetings.
Jamadore1 Are you in a rush to buy a new camera? If not, I think it may be good to wait.. There might be a few surprises in the second half of the year :)
So this looks like he poured water on an SAL-2470ZA lens, a lens specifically not advertised as weather/dust sealed… did it survive? I already own this lens, but have been very careful about taking it out in adverse conditions and wondered if I could be more confident with it.
John how are the jpegs out of this camera? I take a lot of photos and sometimes just don't have the time to process raw files. I heard the newer Sony cameras like the Sony A6000 have a amazing jpeg engine.
I really liked the JPEGs out of the camera. I mainly shoot JPEGs these days and of course you don't have the flexibility with RAW when editing but overall, its been pretty good.
Thank you for your answer. I have few more questions : Does the EVF have some delay like on the nex 7? Sometimes i move my head 1cm and the EVF switches off. I like my nex 7 a lot but this problem is really annoying and can make you miss a shot. What is the real battery life of this camera when shooting in raw? Is the autofocus fast and accurate in low light (outdoor at night or indoor)? Is the auto WB good in lowlight/artificial light (i think this point is not so good with nex 7)
I'm getting into the photography as well as videography/cinematography field and wondering if I should get this or the A77 mark ii for my first camera. Thanks for any response and awesome videos bro!
Hi John, considering the Alpha 77Mkii as a step up from my Alpha 65 + selection of sony kit lens and a sony 50mm+ 3 stunning old minolta AF lenses. 28-8-,100-200,(4.5) + 100-300 barrel lens. Now, what in your mind would you recommend, the full frame issue is not an issue on my Alpha 65 with my present work, people ,the occasional commissioned wedding and rail road photography (I'm UK based). OK the 65 is stunning, the new 77mkii is a step up in image quality and the 99 i'd be able to utilize my Minolta lenses to the full. Just to add confusion to the mix,the Sony UK guys at the UK's big photo show in march told me that i'd get better image quality with my lenses with the 77 MkII than with the full frame 99!
Ian Loasby Hmm I'm not sure about the a77M2 being better than the a99 with regard to image quality. I would hand that straight away to the a99. In my opinion I would go with the a99 because it is full frame and you would be able to use your lenses to its fullest and if you ever need to use your a99 as a crop sensor camera you can turn that on in the camera to get that extra reach.
only going on what the Sony reps advised me at the UK's biggest photo show John, must admit i was surprised especially as the was a stunning special offer on ,shame i could not afford it would have saved myself over £200 on the 77MkII
hi john planning to take up my profession as photography, mainly concentrated on candid shoots and fashion shoots do you think a99 is a better choice please help me out on this
PLease help. i have the sony sal16-50 lens, i know its not a full frame lens, but now now i cant afford the 24 70 lens, so will the sal 16-50 work on this, i know that with this lens it will crop the sensor, and give me 10mp stil, but will it affect the video``?? i have a a77. so if i use the 16-50 will it effect my video or will be normal
Hi John I have had my Sony Alpha SLT A77V for two years its now time to move on to a full frame camera, I'm considering the A99 as I have the Sony 2.8/28-75 SAM, 4.5/70-300 SSM-G and 4.5/70-400 SSM-G lenses, Plus flash and other accessories could you please advise if they would work with the new tracking focus system on the A99, I'm very keen to get one following this wonderful review of yours,
Hi Peter. I took a look at the lenses that could be used with the Dual AF system and it looks like only the 70-300mm G SSM lens is compatible with it. Still, autofocus would be pretty fast with the other two lenses.
John, tried an A99 a bit in the store today, on my A99 I can get the function that shows if the camera is straight or not in the EVF, which I can on my A57. Am i doing something wrong or isnt that around on A99?
Hi i don't know what should i choose between the a58,a57,a5100 and nikon d3300. What camera from this is better for videos?and also for photos but more for video.
between a Alpha77II or a A99 which one should i buy ? is for car photography and landscape (i gonna use it in the rain too), and i don't have objectives for Full frame , i only got these from my A58 !
I'm a huge sony camwra fan. And I'm a filmmaker. So, when it comes to video which camera would you say is better, the sony a77ii, a7ii, or a99. I would probably go with the a7ii out of those choices. It seems to offer the most features and of course is a lot lighter and smaller to carry around.
I was leaning towards the a77ii, Thank you. But as for the audio input. I know it has the mic input, but is there a way to review audio from the camera? like a mic audio jack splitter?
cartoonice1 If the microphone you're using has a mic input you can review it properly but the camera also has a built in speaker so you can hear it but if you're out in the open it might be a bit difficult to hear it.
The a99 is a lot better than the 6D. In terms of features you have fast burst modes (cropped), a wealth of video features like peaking, headphone and mic inputs, articulating LCD screen, GPS, dual SD card slots and more.
Jose luis Cordova The 18-200mm is compatible with both cameras but it isn't a full frame camera so if you put it on the a99, it will act as a crop sensor camera.
Oh I see, I think im going for telezoom first, but im dreaming about full frame too, too many dreams not enough money :P And that part about not being able to change with the US version is really stupid. Guess the camera is cheaper in US then and they are locking it for the american market
Thanks for your reply, there are also other choices, please advise on the best one under record setting - 60i 24M(FX) / 60i17M(FH) / 60p 28M(PS) / 24p 24M(FX) / or 24p17M(FH) If you know what the mean as well that would be great Thanks again. Barry

Hi. Yes. This is my main camera. The image quality will be a lot better than the a77, especially in low light performance.
hi. I know I'm not john, but wanted to answer your question. The zeiss is also weather sealed. Well worth the money if you can afford it
Depending on the lens I'm using, I'd set the aperture wide open at f2.8 or larger and if its very low light, then ISO 3200 or 6400. Shutter speed varies depending on what I intend to shoot.
I haven't tried it but I think its a great accessory for what it does. If I needed it, I would definitely consider getting one.
Nice review John! a99 is a beautiful camera indeed.
Just wondering if you are going to review the new Carl Zeiss 50 mm 1.4 lens? Waiting for your review and then decide if I will buy it or not?
It will be shooting at 4.6 megapixels in telezoom mode (10fps). The a77 shoots at full resolution.
Definitely will when it gets released.
I would definitely recommend it for wedding photography. Both cameras are more than capable for shooting weddings.
got a question Do you think the A99 is still worth getting? I use the A900 now. Want to keep using my lenses.
You're losing about 1/3 of light reaching the sensor but with sensor tech getting better, it doesn't really bother me. Actually if you buy the a99 in the US, you won't have the option to change between ntsc and pal.
Wow, I really like the song the pianist was playing. I'm hoping to get the Hasselblad HV DSLR within the next few months which is the same thing as the Sony a99.
i love this camera, when i'll start work i will buy this perfection
I haven't had any troubles with it and I've used it in the pouring rain before.

I have an a-65,looking at an a-99 down the road a bit,how much better is the a-99?
Hi John, just like to know in your opinion, what will be your best suggested setting for night photography using this a99 ?
Hi John, when I shoot with my A57 I can only change Iso in big jumps, like 800, 1600, 3200, 6400. But it looks like you have a lot more choices here on A99, I saw you pass by 2000, 2500, 3200 or? Cause when I shoot I dont always want to jump all the way up to 3200
Just love the way you present things. I am a very big fan of You and Sony products ....very big thumbs up :D
What do you intend to photograph? The a99 is a brilliant camera but expensive if you don't have any full frame lenses.
Hi John, nice seeing ur video ... can u suggest the perfect dslr for both still n video ?
i think it's about time sony releases the much awaited A99 II...currently using the a77 and eagerly waiting to see how sony improves on an already really great full frame camera...

Thank you for a great overview of the A99. Have you tried the Tamron 24-70 2.8? If so, what are you thoughts compared to zeiss 24-70?

Hi Jon, which one have better low light af? A99 or a77II? I shoot mostly weddings. Thanks!
Definitely the a99.

Nice job. The articulating screen is VERY useful. Best in the business. Does the tether work with smart phone?
It doesn't unfortunately but you can use an app called rcdroid which will allow you to tether it.
Hi John, just wanted to confirm something. You say the A99 is good for 6fps at full resolution, what resolution would it push out when doing 10fps and does that mean the A77 isn't doing 12fps at full resolution?
I haven't tried it but I can imagine the Zeiss to be of better quality compared to the Tamron.
I didn't turn on the stabilization for the panning videos but it does indeed have some jello effect.
would you recommand it over a 5d mk iii for someone who doesnt care about video?
where i live, there is not many shops where i can try it so i can only buy it from internet.
How do you get your hands on all these cameras?! Thanks for the review!
If you use the 16-50mm on the a99, it will act exactly like it would on the a77.
hi john, how do you know if the lens of sony is for full frame cameras? and what are the full frame lens available for sony a99?
Hi John, the A99 has a few years on the market ... it is advisable to buy ?, or is it better to buy the A7 II or A7R? ... Or maybe wait A99 II ?, greetings.
Jamadore1 Are you in a rush to buy a new camera? If not, I think it may be good to wait.. There might be a few surprises in the second half of the year :)
+John Sison Still no surprises? waiting for a99II
Hi, im still holding on to my a55 and thinking of upgrading to a full frame. I need your kind advise on which sony range to get best for photography ?
So this looks like he poured water on an SAL-2470ZA lens, a lens specifically not advertised as weather/dust sealed… did it survive? I already own this lens, but have been very careful about taking it out in adverse conditions and wondered if I could be more confident with it.
One of my good friends. Her name is Lucia. Very talented pianist.
i would love if the tethering software supports live view from the pc.
Hey John, can you do a video showing how to setup back button focus on a99? Thanks!
Thank you for your answer. I have few more questions :
Does the EVF have some delay like on the nex 7? Sometimes i move my head 1cm and the EVF switches off. I like my nex 7 a lot but this problem is really annoying and can make you miss a shot.
What is the real battery life of this camera when shooting in raw?
Is the autofocus fast and accurate in low light (outdoor at night or indoor)?
Is the auto WB good in lowlight/artificial light (i think this point is not so good with nex 7)
I'm getting into the photography as well as videography/cinematography field and wondering if I should get this or the A77 mark ii for my first camera. Thanks for any response and awesome videos bro!
Jordan Zunti Yes! It will be an awesome camera for that type of work. Highly recommended.
Thank you...
Question >>> May I use Old Minolta lens ? Is this Sony A mount ?
You can use old Minolta lenses if they have autofocus on this A-mount camera.
Is this one better than the Alpha 58?? D:
LOL (?)
Yes =.)
Excellent review, John!
Never had an issue with overheating.
Is still u use that camera till now?
Hi John,
considering the Alpha 77Mkii as a step up from my Alpha 65 + selection of sony kit lens and a sony 50mm+ 3 stunning old minolta AF lenses.
Just to add confusion to the mix,the Sony UK guys at the UK's big photo show in march told me that i'd get better image quality with my lenses with the 77 MkII than with the full frame 99!

hi john planning to take up my profession as photography, mainly concentrated on candid shoots and fashion shoots do you think a99 is a better choice please help me out on this
+Uday Bheema I would probably take a look at Sony's a7 series cameras.
Did you just pour water on the SAL2470Z?
Has the camera ever overheated?
PLease help. i have the sony sal16-50 lens, i know its not a full frame lens, but now now i cant afford the 24 70 lens, so will the sal 16-50 work on this, i know that with this lens it will crop the sensor, and give me 10mp stil, but will it affect the video``?? i have a a77. so if i use the 16-50 will it effect my video or will be normal
Its provided on the software cd with the a99.
Hi John
I have had my Sony Alpha SLT A77V for two years its now time to move on to a full frame camera, I'm considering the A99 as I have the Sony 2.8/28-75 SAM, 4.5/70-300 SSM-G and 4.5/70-400 SSM-G lenses, Plus flash and other accessories could you please advise if they would work with the new tracking focus system on the A99, I'm very keen to get one following this wonderful review of yours,
Hi Peter. I took a look at the lenses that could be used with the Dual AF system and it looks like only the 70-300mm G SSM lens is compatible with it. Still, autofocus would be pretty fast with the other two lenses.
John Sison Thank you John will be getting the Sony A99 may have to look at a new smaller lens thanks for the advise, Peter
what software do you use to shoot tethered with the A99?
That's a very accurate review. Nice job.
Mescherul I would go with the a57.
+John Sison thanks but is out of my budget
between a Alpha77II or a A99 which one should i buy ?
is for car photography and landscape (i gonna use it in the rain too), and i don't have objectives for Full frame , i only got these from my A58 !
+Miguel Supercars I would definitely go with the a77II then, especially for car photography.
thanks dude , keep doing reviews like this , they are very helpful :D
thanks
I'm a huge sony camwra fan. And I'm a filmmaker. So, when it comes to video which camera would you say is better, the sony a77ii, a7ii, or a99. They each have their own physical and international advantages. The a77ii lacks the audio input, while both the a7ii and a99 have. cartoonice1 If the microphone you're using has a mic input you can review it properly but the camera also has a built in speaker so you can hear it but if you're out in the open it might be a bit difficult to hear it.
Press the Display button on the camera until you get the horizon level on your screen.
Excellent review!
how does this compare to canon 6d full frame? there is a sale for $1,000 off the normal price making it $1,799.
The a99 is a lot better than the 6D. In terms of features you have fast burst modes (cropped), a wealth of video features like peaking, headphone and mic inputs, articulating LCD screen, GPS, dual SD card slots and more.
How good is this camera compared the new Sony A7R ii?
+Jan Arthur Aune I think in terms of quality and low light performance the A7Rii is better than the a99.
no, it's somewhere from 1/3rd to 1/2 stop of a loss in light. losing 1/3rd of the light would make it useless as it is way too much.
Does it miss focus?
CAMERA IS AWESOME THE TECHNOLOGY IS FINE CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SONY CREW .- GLORIA DIGITAL STUDIO . ..THIRUVANANDHAPURAM , KERALA . INDIA
Funny I ran in to you the other day and was confused if I know you from somewhere then looked up this video which I've seen years ago. Boom! Haha!
Ahahaha! Did we actually speak? lol
It still uses the same lenses from the a55.
Nice review
my first camera was a5000 ... I'll use Alfa for life time
Hey John, who was playing the piano?
does this camera have an in-camera stabilizer?
Yes it does.
No worries! Haha some I buy and some I borrow.
I was this for photojournalisming and documentary work :3
very good review!
John, can you kindly give me the link of "Remote Camera Control" Mac app?
Thx man.
never-mind, I found it. :)
Amer Dababneh Hehe sorry I didn't get to reply back sooner. Good that you've found it. Enjoy! =.D
Leica x typ 113 or Sony Alpha a99, which one schould i choose??
Definitely the a99.
John Sison Can you tell me, if man can chose another language like chinese or german in A99 menu?
fan wei You can change the language to Chinese and other languages like Spanish and French. Not sure about German though.
Yes I did! And I'll do it again! =.P
Definitely the Zeiss 24-70mm lens.
I used to but not anymore.
I have a sony a 65 and a99 Those camaras are compatibles with SELP 18200 lens thanks..
Jose luis Cordova They won't be compatible with the SELP 18200 lens.
John Sison thanks what about Sony DT 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 Lens 18-200/3.5-6.3 SAL1820 is compatible with sony a65 and a99? Thanks
Jose luis Cordova The 18-200mm is compatible with both cameras but it isn't a full frame camera so if you put it on the a99, it will act as a crop sensor camera.
Thanks for ur help ok it is good for a 65 but I dont know .. The best lens 18 200 for a a99 ??
Jose luis Cordova Not the best lens. I would suggest the Tamron 28-300mm lens in Sony mount as the best option for you.
Oh I see, I think im going for telezoom first, but im dreaming about full frame too, too many dreams not enough money :P And that part about not being able to change with the US version is really stupid. Guess the camera is cheaper in US then and they are locking it for the american market
I want 1 of these
What would be the best setting for recording in Full HD ?
I would say shooting in AVCHD at 25p/24p (depending on where you bought the camera) would be the best if you're shooting full HD video.
Thanks for your reply, there are also other choices, please advise on the best one under record setting - 60i 24M(FX) / 60i17M(FH) / 60p 28M(PS) / 24p 24M(FX) / or 24p17M(FH)
If you know what the mean as well that would be great
Thanks again.
Barry
I would go for 24p 24M. Its more of the standard frame rate.
