    They weren't "Satanists", they told stories. Mostly macabre, and mystical, with a bit of history. Musical theater. And they did it incredibly well. Check out the original lead singer and a song called "Killers".

  • @TheBlackQueen
    @TheBlackQueen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +87

    The song was inspired by a dream Steve Harris had. It's not necessarily Satanic, it's just a story of a man that discovers a cultish ritual on a walk at night. It's no more Satanic than the Book of Revelations in the Bible.

    • @richthompson2937
      @richthompson2937 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheBlackQueen I just don't see a similarity to the book of revelations and this song. I mean the song glorifies Satan not God and talks about ocult rituals summoning Satan and demons. I used to love iron maiden back in the day when I used to listen to hard rock and I'm not judging I just didn't see how you were comparing the two.

    • @1kurbdogg
      @1kurbdogg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@richthompson2937 He was stating that Revelations ISN'T "satanic", just like this song isn't "satanic".
      That's the correlation he was trying to illustrate.
      In essence, Revelations is no different than Nostradamus's "Les Prophéties".........

    What’s amazing is that Iron Maiden still sound just as good today as they did then. Somehow Bruce Dickinson has managed to maintain his voice, which isn’t easy considering the strain he puts on his vocal chords. I got to see them 2 years ago in Sweden and you would never know these guys are in their 60’s. It was a very high energy show and they played for nearly 3 hours without a break.

    • @sid449

      And Bruce flys the plane from city to city!!

    • @Relyx
      @Relyx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      His voice has changed, but it's still great. His voice as a whole is deeper, and his diction isn't quite as good in the high notes. He tends to speak or go lower an octave or two when it comes to these more vocally intense songs from the early 80s, with constant stabby high notes at a very fast tempo, especially Run To The Hills.

  • @yankeerepairs
    @yankeerepairs 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    For clarification, as was needed back in the early '80s,,, this song is written about a dream (nightmare) that the bass player (Steve Harris) had when he watched the horror movie "The Omen ll" - and reminded him of lyrics from a poem "Tam O'Shantern" by Robert Burns... Iron Maiden has clearly stated, repeatedly, that they in no way, practice any Anti-Christ, or promote any Devil worship. And, if ever having followed the band, their 30+ other albums, almost 40 yrs of tours and live performances, or interviews, will know that they are all pretty level headed guys, with families, celebrate much of the good of man, and have had very positive influences on all those around them. They weren't even heavy drug using and out of control, even in their youth. (As compared to other popular bands of the past few generations)
    As, if I understand, the drummer, Nicko McBrain, is a devout Christian, as well. It's certainly been a 'brand' / 'rumor' that they have had to deal with for decades, but have been able to put behind them, due to their body of work, and success.
    And, btw, they are true professionals, and I have seen them many times since the 80s, right up till 2019, and are the epitome of heavy metal music both in writing and in live performance and musicianship. Top notch !
    Heavy Metal is a tribute TO Iron Maiden !

    I went to a Catholic high school and when this came out all of us metal heads had this tape in our walkmans and boomboxes. The priests and nuns tried to ban it but Iron Maiden outlasted them. 🤣🤣

    Fear Of The Dark and The Trooper are my favorites! This one is great too , so is another on the same album, Run To The Hills.

    "This band is on a different level." You are correct, Sir. Epic story-telling metal style. It's an essential pastime.

    The key to almost all Maiden songs is that they are a story: an original story, a historical story, a literary story, or some combination of some or all that.

    There is a noticeable difference when a bass player or a drummer is the main song writer. Especially when it comes to rhythm. Steve Harris in Iron Maiden (bass), Lemmy in Motörhead (bass), Till Lindemanns singing and song writing in Rammstein (former drummer), Dave Grohl in Foo Fighters (drummer) to name a few. Or as with a strong rhythm guitarist as Malcolm Young in AC/DC.
