    It happens because your wood has been properly dried and you didn’t pre-drill a pilot. That’s what running it in reverse does, pilot hole hack.

    Two ways to do it. The proper way which is pre-drill. and the second way is to blunt the tip of the screw, that way it pushes rather than cuts the fibers and isn't as likely to crack the board. For anything like this like wall installations? ALWAYS pre-drill. Just because it's covered up doesn't mean do it wrong. that's a structural defect now.

  • @allanatwick1606
    @allanatwick1606 2 ปีที่แล้ว +74

    This happens because the reversed screw cuts the grain of the wood making a pilot hole , the first screw simply separates the grain causing the split to run with the grain.
    Same principle as hitting the tip of a nail before hammering it in. The flattened tip tears the grain on the way through and basically making a pilot hole but the un flattened tip just separates the grain

    It’s called pre-drilling. It “happens” or works because you’re not expanding the wood and causing it to split if you remove some material in the space you’re drilling into. By running the drill in reverse while pushing the screw in forcibly, you’re basically creating the pilot whole since the threads of the screw are running the opposite direction. So instead of the screw sinking it’s removing material by cutting through the wood with each thread and pushing it outward at the same time (if you run it in reverse).

  • @stevengarner780

      He put in the screws on "drilling mode" without much percussion since he doesn't know what that is. This is someone who didn't read the manual.

    It happens because if u drill normally u go between the wood fibres and seperate them. If u drill backwards or predrill u break the fibre, this way the screw doesnt push so many wood fibres on each side and doesnt split the wood. Same thing happens if u distroy a little the pointy end of a screw or a nail with a hammer, it wont split the fibres but break trough them.

    Wow! I just learned something new, forget drilling a pilot hole in future, thanks for sharing. 🤣😂

    You also can hit the tip of the screw with a Hammer from the front. When it is a little flat wood wouldn't crack.

  • @thomasmichael7783
    @thomasmichael7783 ปีที่แล้ว

    Because your drilling a pre pilot hole, the reverse movement with forward pressure creates a clean pilot hole for the screw to then wind into the wood properly

    The predrill removes material that the screw displaces when it's sunk. With nowhere to go, it pushes out sideways. The threads still displace wood, but not enough volume as the root. That the actual "why" instead of "just predrill".

    Yep, reverse piloting the screw so you don’t have to drill. Been doing it a while.
    Also works great for setting a screw so it doesn’t run way from your finger but into your finger as your finger acts like a guide. Also
    Doesn’t hurt your finger

  • @RenormalizedAdvait

    Screw run in reverse is actually drills a larger hole in to the wood. This minimizes the stress.

    A screw is basically a wedge, pushing the material of the board to the sides forcing it apart were as a drill bit has channels in them to allow the drilled material to be crapped out putting no strain on the sides, creating a pilot hole. Using the same screw on reverse mimics this without a bit change.

  • @hamsandwich387
    @hamsandwich387 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It heats up the wood to 10000 degrees and then the wood flexes and gets moist from the outside in and while the drill is on half battery it keeps the hand at a 90 and half degree angle offset to the third degree. That's why your welcome

    It’s called making a pilot hole. Usually done with a drill bit but if there is a hole for the screw then it will expand the wood less

    Screws are just round wedges with threads. The bigger the screw the more likely it splits. It's basically a self driving axe unless you burn your way through half way

    Oops sheet rock screw. Go down to your local fastener store and ask what screw you need.

  • @william-fla-321
    @william-fla-321 ปีที่แล้ว

    We use to do the same thing with nails. You would hit the pointed end with the hammer and then drive the nail to prevent splitting.

  • @666cowie

    I think it’s because when u drill a hole of run it in reverse you effectively remove material. But when you attempt to screw it in you displace the material, and the wood often splits.

    Wood grain runs perpendicular to the edge. Coming in at a different angle you won't be separating the grain. More angle means you pull the grain together.

  • @Brenta001
    @Brenta001 ปีที่แล้ว

    In reverse it’s drilling a hole far enough so it doesn’t split. Good technique

    thats same principle of hammering a nail in back to front on end of timber to compress the wood and then hammer nail in right way. been done since before my grandfather was a boy . saw him doing it 40 years ago

  • @megusta9045
    @megusta9045 ปีที่แล้ว

    Heated screws prevent it, so by running the drill in reverse with the friction on the wood it heats up the screw and also wood making it more malleable and preventing splitting.

    l work in the commercial garage door industry. we teach always to use a 1/4 inch drill bit , and drill a 1/4inch into the studs. that way we don't split the wood when we sink in a lagg.
