    It happens because your wood has been properly dried and you didn’t pre-drill a pilot. That’s what running it in reverse does, pilot hole hack.

  • @allanatwick1606
    @allanatwick1606 2 ปีที่แล้ว +74

    This happens because the reversed screw cuts the grain of the wood making a pilot hole , the first screw simply separates the grain causing the split to run with the grain.
    Same principle as hitting the tip of a nail before hammering it in. The flattened tip tears the grain on the way through and basically making a pilot hole but the un flattened tip just separates the grain

    Two ways to do it. The proper way which is pre-drill. and the second way is to blunt the tip of the screw, that way it pushes rather than cuts the fibers and isn't as likely to crack the board. For anything like this like wall installations? ALWAYS pre-drill. Just because it's covered up doesn't mean do it wrong. that's a structural defect now.

  • @yippeekayey926
    @yippeekayey926 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    It’s called pre-drilling. It “happens” or works because you’re not expanding the wood and causing it to split if you remove some material in the space you’re drilling into. By running the drill in reverse while pushing the screw in forcibly, you’re basically creating the pilot whole since the threads of the screw are running the opposite direction. So instead of the screw sinking it’s removing material by cutting through the wood with each thread and pushing it outward at the same time (if you run it in reverse).

Using the same screw on reverse mimics this without a bit change.

    I used to put the screws in a small bucket of water, the water in the threads of the screw would keep from splitting the wood!!..😉
    Pre drilling is ultimately the best way and only one extra step!!..☺️

  • @thomasmichael7783
    @thomasmichael7783 ปีที่แล้ว

    Because your drilling a pre pilot hole, the reverse movement with forward pressure creates a clean pilot hole for the screw to then wind into the wood properly

    thats same principle of hammering a nail in back to front on end of timber to compress the wood and then hammer nail in right way. been done since before my grandfather was a boy . saw him doing it 40 years ago

    It happens because if u drill normally u go between the wood fibres and seperate them. If u drill backwards or predrill u break the fibre, this way the screw doesnt push so many wood fibres on each side and doesnt split the wood. Same thing happens if u distroy a little the pointy end of a screw or a nail with a hammer, it wont split the fibres but break trough them.

    Reversing the screw allows for the excess material to be drilled out as opposed to forward motion where access material has no where to go but sideways, hence why wood cracks, which is why pre-pilot hole is the correct method of installation

  • @william-fla-321
    @william-fla-321 ปีที่แล้ว

    We use to do the same thing with nails. You would hit the pointed end with the hammer and then drive the nail to prevent splitting.

    The wood is less likely to split once it’s already split anyway
    Back when they built wooden bridges they would often pre split wood for this reason

    Screw it in half-way then unscrew most of the way, then screw it in and set it. Won't split.

    Yep, reverse piloting the screw so you don’t have to drill. Been doing it a while.
    Also works great for setting a screw so it doesn’t run way from your finger but into your finger as your finger acts like a guide. Also
    Doesn’t hurt your finger

    I always soak my wood before screwing. 😁

  • @TrollingHistory

    It happened because you counter sunk it. You see it only cracked when the neck or the screw opened it up.
    So try to minimise force there or make a recess first counter sink the hole then wapp the screw in. Which is probably what you do by spinning it in backwards you strip out the material making the hole bigger through the first half. So weaker too since only half of the wood is sealed tight around the screw once all in. The first half is stripped out then tight.
    I would drill a recess just for the neck of the screw to sit in. Then the threads will all be jammed tight.
    But what do I know. I'm just guessing.

    In reverse it’s drilling a hole far enough so it doesn’t split. Good technique

    Wood grain runs perpendicular to the edge. Coming in at a different angle you won't be separating the grain. More angle means you pull the grain together.

    Or maybe a construction/structural screw with a sold drilling tip, and maybe use 2x4 instead of 1x4

  • @AlexandMaggie07
    @AlexandMaggie07 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason why that happens is because have you effectively made a pathway for the screw and you've effectively dried it. About the same thing as drilling a hole the same size as the screw first before running the screw.

    The reverse screwing makes a small countersink, so that type of screw head will sit and not split, won't split with pan head screws, or use an actual countersink bit then screw in

  • @brauliorubio2465

    It happens because fibers get compressed outward and split and by removing some of the fibers it prevents from splitting

  • @666cowie
    @666cowie ปีที่แล้ว

    I think it’s because when u drill a hole of run it in reverse you effectively remove material. But when you attempt to screw it in you displace the material, and the wood often splits.
