  • Jon boat meets Jet Ski and falls in love... I performed the wedding with a saws-all and fiberglass. The end result is a 12' Jon boat that will go over 4" of water at 36 mph. So much fun!!

    I came across this video after I saw a flat bottom jon boat on FB marketplace for like 200 bucks and thought about installing a jet drive. So I googled jet powered Jon boat. I'm glad I'm not the only person nuts enough to think of this.

    Thanks, I wasn't trying to sell you on anything, I just liked your video and thought you would enjoy seeing what I had done with my JetJon build. I'm fortunate not to have any rocks to worry about, nice open river with sandy bottom here.

    Thanks man, maybe you'll get a chance to build another one some day. While mine is heavier than yours, it jumps right up on plane instantly and will go 36mph on flat water. I'm sure 4"-6" wouldn't be any problem at speed either, probably even less. I have the Seadoo 580 Rotax motor. I didn't use anything special to build mine either, just aluminum angle, plywood, fiberbglass and a couple hundred screws. Anyone could study my pictures and duplicate the results if they wanted.

    I think with a trim setup you could get more of your boat out of the water but on plane i still see it drafting 2-3 inches plus the fiberglass hanging out the bottom; maybe 2-2.5 inches. I cannot see your setup going through 6 inches safely, BUT you're in an area you don't have to to worry about that. I think you're setup is capable of 40+mph but like you said its reliable and it gets the job done. :-)

    clean job. i need one of these to go up river just below hover dam and explore. my outboard would get thrashed if i ever hit bottom.

  • @Tom_Goss
    @Tom_Goss  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Steve, I'm skimming right on top, any waves from wind or wake and the pump is unloading and I'll have to slow way down to get back into the water enough. I really need more weight in the back, boat rides level on plane, would not carry a passenger up front. So adding a trim system would put my bow lower than it should be. Works great for me though, having so much fun with it... Perfect for the catfish I catch.

      A lot of flat bottom jet boats have this problem. It’s called cavitation. A hull spoon is the way to fix it.

    • @Tom_Goss
      @Tom_Goss  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joshuakrag650 Where and how I use the boat that isn't something I need to bother with. I've been running it every year since without any problem, if conditions are unfavorable for the design I don't want to be out there anyhow. That comment was out of context anyway since TH-cam managed to scramble comments and replies, or the original comment I was replying to was deleted.. Don't know for sure it's been 7 years.

    Hey to who ever built this jet jon,, hats off to you this is one of the best builds that I have ever seen,, this is what I am looking for to run up the Muskegon river here in Michigan to chase the salmon and steelhead can you help me?

      @Tom_Goss  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the build and can appreciate what I've done. Still running great, the most fun I've had in a boat. I wish I could help, but this being made from old used parts and lots of one off hand made pieces it would be way too much for me to do it again. The only way boats like this are affordable for their owners, is because they built them themselves. It's about $2k worth of parts/materials, then you'd be looking at $10-15k for 2-3 months of labor. lol In the end you have a cool boat made from a bunch of used parts, that doesn't come with a warranty. ;)

    Hi Tom,
    This is Steve (64coupe on tinboats) I have been working on my project little by little and I have not posted any updates. I think you would draft more than 4 inches even on plane and if you added a trim system. I see how he is able to get 40mph with a 440cc because he is not fighting the weight of the front of the boat and the entire bottom gets out of the water, where your setup almost plows the water.

    Is it fairly easy to true the drivetrain since you used the full jet ski unit? I have experience on stand up skis in 3'' water over river rock and want to do something a little longer, wider, higher and maybe a larger motor mainly to get to good muskie/bass spots. Do you think a 14' flat Jon would do the trick for 2 sometimes 3 people if the weight distribution is critiqued ahead of time? Thoughts?

    • @Tom_Goss
      @Tom_Goss  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      14' would be small for 3 people. Building one of these takes allot of thought and attention to detail. You need to have an understanding of jet drives, be able to fabricate, and know how to use fiberglass. Once you've got that, the rest just happens. lol

  • @Tom_Goss
    @Tom_Goss  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not interested in top speed these days... 36 is way more than I needed anyhow, I cruise at 30 or less. Being reliable, fuel efficient, and easy to work on were my goals, and I met them. I've idled through 6" of water without problem, I see no reason that would be a problem when on plane, not something I would do anyhow.. I'm too careful to be a daredevil. lol

  • @sidneysterling9331
    @sidneysterling9331 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am working on my own Frankenboat. Could you tell me what kind of adhesive you used to glue the fiberglass frame to the metal floor? Also, it looks like you also fiberglassed the whole unit to the aluminum floor. Any special precautions, resin type, or tricks to insure it did not eventually separate? Hell of a nice project!

    • @Tom_Goss
      @Tom_Goss  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Loctite S-30 Polyurethane sealant between the fiberglass and aluminum union with stainless 1/4-20 bolts every 6-8". Then the fiberglass I laid inside gave the jet ski hull a larger footprint that prevents the union from flexing. Resin is nothing special, I used the Bondo brand from Walmart. Haven't had the first problem and don't expect any. Put down twice as much of the polyurethane as you think you will need, excess will squeeze out but if you didn't have enough you won't know until you find it leaking. I added links in the description for the build threads. Hope this helps, glad you liked the project.

    Do you still have to register the motor when you build one of these? Boat too? Or do you still go by the sea doo register. #?

    • @Tom_Goss
      @Tom_Goss  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those laws would vary by state. Here in GA you only register the boat.

  • @mrbtwice

    even though I probably already know the answer to this, how durable would you say this would be if the boat bottoms out on gravel? we fish a river that gets pretty low in the summer if it doesn't rain much. I want to build one of these but don't have the tools to weld aluminum. so basically would you risk running it if you had the risk of bottoming out or would there be any way to reinforce it a little more? thanks in advance

    • @Tom_Goss
      @Tom_Goss  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't use mine where risk of hitting bottom was present, and definitely no rock/gravel. The union between the jet ski hull and jon boat hull is strengthened by all the extra fiberglass overlaid inside, but a hard hit could cause problems I feel. One of those deals where I really don't know how strong it really is, over 4 years now and it's still leak free. Bouncing over choppy water at 35 mph, and the occasional log bump while trolling, and it hasn't missed a beat.

    • @mrbtwice
      @mrbtwice 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i just went out on a trip a few days ago. seemed like the only time we bottomed out was just the lower end of the boat motor hitting the ground and that only happened 2 or 3 times up river about 3 miles. that was in a 12 footer with a 20 hp motor and 2 people around 170 in it. think i might give it a go and see what happens. 99% of the time if i go theres always someone else tagging along with a boat so if anything happened id always have a ride back. might just get it up and going for now and find someone to help fab and weld it up over the winter or something. thanks for the response and awesome video my man

      @Tom_Goss  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +NickBrown501 www.tinboats.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=28350 That is the build thread. I used PL S-30 Polyurethane to seal the two hulls together and used 1/4 - 20 bolts to join them. Fiberglass laid inside to strengthen and enlarge the footprint so no flex too place. Has been flawless.
