It's that time of year again, summer is coming to a close and the garden is looking a bit worse for wear. In this video, @jacquesinthegarden and I decided to get a head start on the garden chores and let's just say we went a little overboard!

The "Crack Up Intro" is always great. 😄 Glad you guys are ok!
Us too!
I hope these 2 never stop making videos it would be tragic
I agree
I would be devastated 😅
I like the relaxed feel of the garden - some wins, losses, experiments and projects. It keeps things fun.
Couldn't agree more
You're intro of you two laughing is the greatest thing ever. Already know it's gonna be a good video!!
Glad you enjoy it!
They’re growing veggies but they are growing in our hearts ❤️ 😂 Love this bromance so much!
They're quite the duo!
It might be a tad more than a bromance, but I feel you
LOL love this - Kevin
It's not
Love you guys because you are so real with messy gardens, lopping off tree limbs willy nilly, and being you! And that’s not a knock it’s a compliment! ❤
Epic Homesteading videos always feel cozier! Gluck with the pumpkin boi growing big! Can't wait for the other pumpkins to dry fully and we see the results!
Glad to hear! Excited about the pumpkins
Can't wait for both the books 😍 we're just coming into spring here in Auckland, New Zealand and your channel has got me pumped to up my garden game. Did lots of seed starting with you yesterday and now going to think about how to make corn happen. This is my favourite channel on TH-cam, thanks!!!
I’m all the way down the south of the south island and seeing this makes me want to try growing corn lol
Same here, I'm on the Kapiti Coast in New Zealand, and Spring is here today!
Appreciate hearing this! Loved my time in New Zealand, have to come back sometime
This entire summer has been crazy. Here in southern Ontario it's been a super rainy summer, and they're already calling for frost in some places... Very unusual.
Nice pumpkin!! I happen to live 5 minutes from Dill farm, who bred the original Atlantic Giants. (Windsor, Nova Scotia. Fun fact: Long Pond which is the birthplace of hockey is also on their land!) It’s an amazing farm to visit in the fall when they put dozens of these in display and have a big weigh-off competition every year. Can’t wait to see how big yours gets!
So glad you guys work together. Both your channels and insights and little fun competitions have taught me so much that would have taken me years to figure out on my own. Thank you!
Glad you're enjoying!
For leaf footed bugs I use a cordless vacuum stuck up a little DE and then vacuum them up. I wait a day, then throw them in the trash. They will be dead
Good call!
It has indeed been a strange growing season. I also feel you about the tomato plant-the healthiest in my garden has been a volunteer that I did nothing to. 😂
You guys are the best!!great chemistry between the two of you 🌻
Glad to see you both doing well after the storm.
We’ve had so much rain here in eastern Canada,(9 straight days in June,)that most of our crop has rotted out. No squash, no corn, strawberries were literally sitting under water so past harvests of 20 something large freezer bags worth have resulted in none this year and dying plants. Even celery that “supposedly” is a marshland plant has struggled, turning yellow and prematurely going to seed. Tomato plants have literally rotted in the ground, have blossom end rot or tough skinned. Zucchini is the size of pickles. Red onions size of marbles…Greens and herbs have done ok. Carrots in raised bed ok, cruciferous ok but even more prone to white winged butterfly larvae and slugs. Potatoes have done well, but only because we’ve picked off hundreds if not thousands of potato bugs. It’s so wet, I’ve got borers eating the stalks of my beautiful zinnias. It’s so wet that even the insects are desperate for food!! In July a flash flood of 9.8” in 24 hours tore through our capital. We continue to get rain at least 3 days a week. There’s more but you get the picture🙃
Soooo….my friends read this and feel blessed🙏
Silver lining to these clouds…... Herbs, cayenne, garlic…exceptional.
So frustrating, I'm sorry to hear it!
Yes it is….however I’m a manic gardener, so I will apply my insanity and behold…..try again next year and hope for a different outcome!!!🤪
Worked in a grocery store for five years and the ol produce manager was my buddy. Bob. He taught me watermelons are almost always perfect when you pat them like you guys did and it sounds like a basketball bouncing on the court. Hasn’t been wrong for me so far! 🙌🏻 #producebob
Love you guys. Book ordered, can't wait for Jaque's!!!!
Lol, my best tomato this year is a volunteer too. So frustrating but I gotta give it props for resilience!
Save seeds!
My grandmother and aunt used to grow birdhouse gourds every year in their garden. We’ve always been a pretty artsy family, so everyone would paint their birdhouse at the end of the season. We would also paint extras, and give them a gifts. They have both since passed, but I came across some seeds my grandmother had saved & will be planting them next spring. Many fond memories were made around the birdhouse gourd.🥲💗
I can't wait to start some of those memories myself
It’s really great to see you both and to know that you’re all okay! Hi to the chickens!
If you're making enough corn for it, canning corn also brings out a ton of the flavor profiles of the veggie! We had a variety called Double-Sweet Cotton Candy and it came out with a very strong vanilla vibe- and there was enough sugar in the kernels for it to actually almost fully caramelize in the pressure canner.
Well, that sounds amazing! Next year I will probably grow enough to do that
glad your garden survived the storm, it hit us too pretty bad in inland empire but the garden seems happy from the rain!
I am so happy to have found your channel! I live in Zone 8b and have definitely gotten my gardening game on after following you guys. You crack me up and take the fear out of gardening (at least for me) I always look forward to your videos! 🙂
Good looking garden for August. It’s sizzling here in Carpinteria. The pepper harvest is going to be UNREAL
Love the videos that the two of you make. Fun! Can’t wait to see what you do with the gourds. I have several from a crop a couple years ago waiting for the right idea. Something other than a birdhouse, maybe. Don’t get rid of the small ones, they will dry nicely.
I love both you guys and you've helped me grow as a gardener so much! I had great success with the grafted tomatoes and also have crazy amounts of birdhouse gourds, but had some failures as well but that's par for the course. I started my fall garden seeds in my Epic six cells and ordered more Epic 4 cells. I did cringe when you whacked that peach tree but totally trust you and cut my loquat way down just before the storm after watching your videos on it several times I already ordered my book and can't wait to get it! I'll be ordering Jacques too!
Amazing, so happy to hear this and appreciate your support!
I really enjoy your videos. I'm in the San Diego suburbs as well.
1:32 we also do the same with corn - we also add zucchini to it, makes it a harvest time fave!
Sounds delicious! - Kevin
Looking much slimmer, Kevin…great job! I’m really happy to hear that Jacques will be working on a book, also. Please keep us posted!
Thank you, and will do!
I've seen the "Curly Q" test also. That little tendril that grows close to the actual melon will turn completely brown all the way through when the watermelon is ripe. Not sure if it's an "every time" thing, but it seems helpful for those who have never grown watermelons before.
Great video, loved the update. Sad the pre order is already sold out.
More releasing for pre-order tomorrow
USDA hardiness zones definitely don't tell anywhere close to the whole story with what will grow well in your area. I'm in central Florida zone 9b and one of my papayas (which was started from a seed in January 2023 and planted outside in March) is already 8.5ft tall and loaded with fruit. It's the temperate climate plants (ex. figs) that are a challenge for me, but it's worth a shot.
The pumpkin is gonna be huge! I'm envious of that watermelon too😆
Also, nice Shirt!
I just started mushroom foraging this year, if you haven't tried you definitely should! especially with how much rain you guys have had in Cali this year.
There's a lot to learn when it comes to properly identifying them, but you could always go out with an experienced mushroom forager and make a nice video out of it!
You two are the real deal as always, another great vid!
It’s on my list to do!!!
Love the relaxed look of your garden, Kevin. It looks homier. I definitely cringed and felt a little sting in my heart for the peach tree. Looking forward to both books!!! 📖
I’m enjoying the feel!
That weather you guys have sounds like GA. I grew dent corn this year for the first time and it was successful, I am so happy. But I am scared because the last time I tried to harvest, I found a copperhead snake so I'm kind of scared to harvest the rest despite garden/weed cleanup.
Jacques is coming out with a book too? 👀 I'm so in! I'm always thrifting for gardening books, never enough books!! I'm excited for the Epic Homesteading one too, can't wait to forget about it in a few months and then have a surprise in my mailbox :D
No guarantees yet, but he might be!
Good year for corn compared to other years! Later ones were a little more chewy however. Grew it with my butternut squash which had a lot of powdery mildew! Look forward to your new book!
Yeah it's been an interesting year for sure! Appreciate the kind words
Awww…What a cute patch of corn…😂
LOVE THE INTRO. YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME! CANT WAIT FOR BOTH BOOKS!
Thank you!!!
Sunday shall be my day to prep for fall
I'll be coming back from a vacation of 2 weeks. Grandma watered my plants during the heat, and that was the first heat we had here since mid and early June... I suspect all my plants may have grown extra extra leavy thanks to that and the wet summer beforehand. At least I'm returning with a new strawberry breed!
Have fun this Sunday!
You can use those gourds even to make drinking bottles!
So Kevin didn't get a corn stalk slap to the face and if Jacque's book is called "Get it Saucey! Recipes from a Garden Hermit" I'll by that ❤😂
LOL I was spared this time
Glad to see y'all made it through that storm. Guys.....harvest to table cooking?b food for thought. Lol.
Great vid....Glad you weathered Hilary, we even had a hurri-quake in Oxnard, from which I post....God Bless.
Heard about that!
I love that goal man😂. I’m gonna do it with you!!! We’re bout to get ripped!
13:47 the hermit stomp was personal ahahahaha
Hermit stomp HAHA
Oooooh excited for Jacques' book! :D
Lookin' good Kevin! I noticed immediately that you had lost some weight. Being sugar free for over a month is truly an accomplishment, and no easy feat. Keep up the good work!
Just harvested a 53 lbs watermelon 🍉
Can’t wait to see yours and what fun things you make out of it!!
CPJ 🗽🗽🗽 y’all are so great. You made my day!
Your weather description is basically Michigan summer weather. Just add in a tornado or 2 and a couple days of like 50 and it’s spot on. 🤣
We actually had tornado warnings, believe it or not
10:30 I wonder if the garage floor tomatoes are doing so well because of the compost/garbage bins giving them extra nutrients in the water after it rains. Also, I'd love to see the watermelon popsicle recipe in a video!
I don't think so, nothing would be leaking from those bins
@@epichomesteadingah true, mine have small drainage holes so there's a bit of leakage after heavy rain so I thought it could've been what's helping
Great way to cook corn...
Add sweet basil and pineapple sage! Amazing flavor!
You guys are the best thing in all my subscriptions!!!!!
Looking good ☺️ keep it up. Small tip for better health eat any green plant (fibrous is best) before you eat your main meal.
This is Norwegian summer most years, and what severely set my peppers back by many weeks just after "hardening" them off..
Your Bougainville is beautiful! Here in Northern California somebody grew a ivy vine above his garage door to cover the street facing side of his yard. It was in the hopes to make it blend in with all the shrubs and trees. However 3 years after it had taken off he realized it was the perfect “ladder” for the rats/mice to get into the eaves of his roof and do some damage in the attic. Specially with the rare storms coming through now, rodents are looking for higher ground to nest in.
That would be my nightmare, thanks for the heads up I'll keep it in mind
@@epichomesteading Hmm maybe a trellis structure for it that is in front of that chimney but not actually attached to it? It would probably have to be a foot or two away from that wall so the bougainvillea has a harder time connecting to the chimney wall.
Alternatively, keep it below the roofline.
Bougainvillea on walls is lovely. I planted a bunch along a block wall at my last house. I did alternating colors, so it was beautiful. The idea was, since bougainvillea have spikes that it kept people from climbing the wall to get to the persimmons growing in the garden.
I think today, if I had a wall like that and the right climate, I might mix bougainvillea with passionfruit. Just have to keep the bougainvillea trained and behaving a bit so I can get to the fallen passionfruit. Or probably once the neighbors learn about the passionfruit, maybe neighbors would keep the outside cleaned of fallen passionfruit lol.
I'm growing Luffa and Bird hours gourd, didn't realize that that gourd outgrows the luffa. lessoned learned for me.
Hey, look who's back. Glad to see you guys got through Hilary okay.
I like Jacque's hateful stomp on the leaf footed bug. I relate to that! I've definitely killed a bug and gave it an extra stomp or two 😅
Plumeria would be perfect for the homestead! I want to see what you can do with them!
I want all the books .. 💚
I have the Pink Banana squash growing and Big Max pumpkin, both by Botanical Interests Ill let you know how they turn out.
Appreciate you supporting us!
Aww you guys are great! I'm glad you're all ok. I love the cherry tomato and corn pasta sauce... I've been doing that comboo recently and it's addictive. In fact I'm going to go make some now lol! Also very funny re weight loss with Craig Pucci Johnson. Maybe you'll get the weight back after eating him. Love following Craig's growing journey. Also the bougainvillea will be like Greece. They grow them up houses like that more than the British. It'll look beautiful. I've got a couple of magenta boug's and a Hawaiian gold one.
I can't wait to see it grow!
this year's weather was so wild where I'm like having a garden existential crisis what to plant anymore LOL
SERIOUSLY
it's been all kinds of problems with them burning all them fires and the oceans some spots are 150F, stop laserin, sheesh, been a pain, seems like they might try to freeze it super hard this winter, so idk watch out for that now?
you need to try out corn ribs(half the cobbs, then quarter, then fry ), we wil toss in all the elote fixings. Its the best.
Rainy sunny humid hot rainy back to sunny... Welcome to Massachusetts.
That's my kind of bowl right there too! 😂
Im gonna try corn next year! Its aleays fun to see you two do a video together!
Have fun with it!
This is my first year trying and so far it’s looking promising
My corn came out so good this year.
I started to remove some of my summer crops.
Sounds like Puerto Rico weather. Rainy, sunny, humid, hot, rainy, sunny, humid, hot.
I have a big problem with what I think is powdery mildew and my pumpkins. Constantly killing my leaves. Tried neem/cleaning off the leaves. Always comes back a day later.
Some people say a milk spray works? I just leave the leaves, unless they look like they are no longer contributing to the feeding of the plant. I live in a dry zone though, so powdery mildew is not a big problem here. For me, the plant seems to still do fine even with powdery mildew and I prefer not to interfere if possible.
5:39 this shot looks so cinematic
I've grown gourds before (I'm no expert) but when you're drying them if they mold some don't panic, as long as they have a dry place and good air flow, they'll be fine. Just sand it off when they're completely dried.
Good tip!
What variety are those massive sunflower heads??? I need to grow those!
There's Mongolian Giant from botanical interests, but then the seeds I grew were from a friend who has grown giants before in West Virginia
Hold up, a corn that can do it all? I need to try that one. Any others like that you can recommend?
You can prune fruit trees in summer? Maybe in CA.
shoot, maybe I need to grow a pumpkin to help me lose a few pounds, lol! I'm bummed tho that none my melons are surviving the night-time critters who have stolen every single one off of my vines so far.. Deffo watch out for those leaf footed bugs on the poms, they LOVE mine and by harvest time, at least half of the fruit will have burst open from these little jerks! Looking forward to your books!!
Totally making those fruit pops tomorrow!
I love epic gardening !!!!!
I am glad you are on a health kick. You look better and your hair cut looks good on you too.
thats the weather every day over here :D
That's a normal summer for us in the UK 😂🌦️🌧️🌤️⛈️🌞🌧️
Oof! - Kevin
In regards to the pumpkin, was there a reason why you guys didnt upright the pumpkin while it was small? That way it can have a flat bottom to be stabilized on?
Everything I have seen from giant pumpkin growers suggests not to
Ahhhh. Peach shortage due to weather in GA. Sniff. I love peaches.
Yep, the Leaf-footed bug is terrible and my only pest now which is breeding like crazy.
Was a nice video, but I still don’t know what I need to do to get ahead of fall lol 😅
More coming don't worry!
What are you using the fertilize the great pumpkin?
Agrothrive
Tropical storm systems!
Here in Oklahoma the bugs and the heat won my garden lost.
You guys are friend goals 😭
Definitely had a huge cringe (and broken heart) when you cut that peach tree 😥 I also have a huge one and it is kind of ridiculous the amount of peaches i get lol...
You would never make it in the mid west weather it is the story of our lives 🤣😂
ME ! I CRINGED ! All I could think was get the root tone😆😆 I just love peaches♥️
Congrats on the books, boys. 👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you!!
I would love to hear what you named your baby chicks!
That will come soon!
