Fil, this is the first time I've come across one of your reviews but in the last 15 minutes I've watched two of your reviews of two of the best pickers ever... Jerry Reed & Jim Stafford. I'll be watching for your work in the future. Jerry and Chet Atkins were very good friends but it certainly didn't hurt that Jerry married Chet's daughter! Jerry Reed was frickin awesome.... So much talent, in so many different things. Most young people dont even know he was a phenomenal guitarist, they just remember him acting in Smokie and the Bandit and such. Jerry was a first class performer, a d entertainer. A true showman who would capture the crowds attention instantly. Musician, actor, singer, song writer, comedian, etc etc etc... A remarkable man.
My boys are 6 and 8 years old, I finally had them sit and watch smokey and the bandit and now they are hooked on the movie and the music of Jerry reed (aka) Snowman Cletus Snow
I got to meet Jerry when I was a child. He stopped to help us when we were lost on a back road in Tn. He was driving an old ratty pickup. So down to earth and a genuinely a nice person. You would never guess he was rich and famous.
Those 3 are my favorite guitar players on any genre...but they weren't just guitar players...they were showmen and entertainers...the greatest of the great!
I heard rumors that he was meeting with the producer and other mucky mucks for the movie, and they asked him to work on a theme song for it. He left the room for about 15 minutes or less, and came back in with Eastbound And Down...

True. I love Jerry Reed, he's one of the all-time great players and very influential among musicians who came after. But he had the Gimmick as well! He was a great showman, comedian and actor on top of being an undeniable virtuoso and innovator.

I'm glad you brought that up. point because I actually think the 90s did a lot to destroy musicians and or so-called musicians. Point being when they came out with artificial ways to produce almost any instrument it set rock and roll back 20 years.
@@terryeibeck8036 Brad Paisley and Keith Urban are 2 great players in the same vain as Chet and Jerry in the Country Genre. There are others in other genres. You just have to search for them.
Thank you great video I had the privilege of being his bass player for 8 years. And you'll be glad to know he was one of the kindest people I ever knew in my life had a huge impact me. I encourage everyone to jump into his catalog because his best songs were mainly songs that were obscure and not heard by most people.

Jerry and the great late Roy Clark were two of the greatest musicians of all time. Both were genuine down to Earth as you can get also. Terribly missed. R.I.P. guys.

Jerry Reed has to be in the top 25 all time guitarists. He was so versatile and fluid in everything he did. He was kinda mismanaged early on, but broke through nicely!
I remember hearing a comment from one of Jerry Reed's closest friends. The friend said this, Jerry could have been a superstar if he had been interested in doing so. But the longer I live I realize that he was his own man. True to himself. As always thank you so much for another wonderful video and commentary. God bless.
Fingerpicking on nylon strings and a flat fretboard. Working with industry legends. Writing and producing. Movie and TV appearances… To refer to Reed an entertainment phenom is not an overstatement. He was such a BEAST, and it's safe to say there'll never be another like him. RIP Snowman.
Amen to that! That particular guitar is the model that Baldwin presented to a few Nashville pickers like Reed and Willie Nelson. Reed cut the top bout to get higher on the fretboard, and Willie’s was broken by a drunk at John T Floores, that’s when he ordered Trigger.

Just like Roy Clark, Jerry combined humour, story-telling and fun with awesome guitar playing. Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, Chet Atkins, and Jerry Reed were my guitar idols when I was growing up in the sixties. Sadly missed all of them.
When people say "underrated", they should be noting guys like Roy Clark, Glen Campbell and Jerry Reed (Chet Atkins has always gotten lots of props). While those guys were very well known in the 70's country music scene, they were definitely forgotten guitar heroes onward. As Fil noted, with Jerry Reed, the other aspects of their talent probably overshadowed their guitar playing. And whomever keeps suggesting these videos, you are the real heroes. Oh, it should be noted when Pat Metheny was young he backed Roy Clark on a gig. Pat gave him major props as a musician and person.
My grandfather knew him and played with him. They met at an Atlanta studio when they were teenagers. When my grandfather met him at the studio, Jerry was playing the banjo. My grandfather played guitar with him. From there they became friends. Moved to Nashville at the same time. He was my dads godfather. He got that sound, partially, by incorporating his superior banjo skills into the guitar.
I LOVE your appreciation of guitarists/musicians of all genres. I remember my parents loved him, so I got turned on to all types of music from my childhood. Excellent!
you are so right. There are so many genre snobs, they disregard any genre rather than their own. But Phil does fair analysis on all types of music and seems to enjoy all music that is good.

Love me some Jerry Reed! He's one of those guys I would have loved to just hang around with. Seemed like such a genuine, fun, personable guy, which came through so clearly in his acting. Then, seeing how amazingly talented he was, I just have so much more respect for him. And his music was just so great. He is missed! Thanks for covering this amazing piece of music!

Jazz cat, the hit the ESSENTIAL aspect of reeds playing, ,,(from your jazz background, given your name) his unique chord progression's, and also let's not forget his totally out of the box independent bass lines, peace man!
In addition to all of the things he could do, he was ahead of his time in video. He was the first country artist to use video projection and image magnification on his live shows. Jerry did it in 1983 and said that one day, every country act would be using video support. The industry laughed at the time, but his prediction had been borne out. He built Nashville's first independent broadcast quality post production and editing facility. Don't let the good ol' boy part mislead you, Jerry was way ahead of the crowd. He was a true genius and the consummate artist.
My dad says he saw Jerry at the (honest) Morgan County Sorghum Festival in 1982. West Liberty, Kentucky. Jerry - a fingerstyle virtuoso - played a flatpicked version of Sailor's Hornpipe, and Jerry killed it. Dad says it was all rained out, yet Jerry and his band closed with the theme to *Smokey and the Bandit* , a gigantic hit for Jerry, and they played it in the pouring rain, unwilling to leave the crowd without a big finale. Wish I'd been there.
I was there! My first concert at the age of 11. It was raining and Jerry had to keep wiping the water off of his guitar. A memory I hope I keep forever!

I saw Jerry in a tv interview say: “ Make no mistake, I love girls, but when Elvis walked into the studio, I thought, that’s the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen”.
Jerry talked about working with Elvis on tv right after he did that recording. I think it was the Ralph Emery show. It's been awhile. Anyway he said Elvis's Limo came to pick him up and he climbed into the Limo and sat down and he was looking right at Elvis. He said I said " Elvis, Son, you a purty man.
FACT.....Dolly Parton was madly in love with Jerry Reed. She literally stalked him and while doing that, she met other industry people who helped her career.
What an amazing guy! He was one of the first to be named a 'certified guitar player' by Chet Atkins. Jerry was top notch on guitar, and a pretty good actor to boot!😁 He died way too young as a lot of incredible talents do, unfortunately.😖 My favorite song by him to this day is still Amos Moses.😉😁👍👍 Great review Fil.👍🎸😉

There’s a lot more picking in the real, good old country music than most people seem to think. Probably because of what an awful monster country music, as a genre, has mutated into in this day & age, and it’s really a shame what’s become of country music in the last decade or 2.

WOW! I was 17 at the time...yeah I'm an oldie but a goldie! Giggle! Most people remember him only for Smokey and the Bandit, which truly is Iconic but Jerry like Roy Clark is an American Icon and Legend! God bless you Jerry and Wings of Pegasus you are an amazing presenter of true talent! Love you my man and God bless you for the intelligence to recognize true talent no matter the era or the talent. You are a true talent unto yourself!!
Don't misunderstand, but I think Chet's statement was true about many other younger guitarists. BUT ... all of those guitarists pointed to Chet as "showing the way" and never lost that enormous respect and love for the man who guided and encouraged them. Both Tommy Emmanuel and Richard Smith continue to gush about Chester (and Jerry) all these years after their passings. The most telling part about Chet's legacy is that to this day, these same Chet understudies continue to play the songs that Chet wrote and/or arranged, pretty much the same way that Chet performed them. It's hard to improve perfection! As brilliant as Reed was, I think both Emmanuel and Smith are better than Reed today. In due course, these two will also one day be overtaken by future generations of thumb pickers. That's just the way it works.

When I was a boy and we watched a movie with Jerry in it, my dad would say, "that guy's a DAMN good guitarist. " I remember Jerry "guest starring " in Scooby Doo.
I saw this a few years ago and it will remain on one of my favorite playlists. Glad to see someone your age exploring so many diverse styles. Jerry was a beast on every song he ever played and still impresses me as much as anyone.
David, I agree, but as the great sax player Jackie McLean used to say, ' to know what is new you MUST know what has been done previously' and reed had covered most of what the Shredder's stumbled onto couple of decades later ,(minus his taste and originality of course).

Jerry was a massive talent! I always try to watch the fret board and finger picking to see how he made the sounds he made but the weirdest is I try to spot if he has shoes on... more then one video I see him playing guitar without shoes on! Not sure why! He’s so damn good i don’t know if anyone ever asked why! Lol

Jerry Reed is one of my all-time guitar heroes. He is one of the reasons that I learned to play guitar, although I have yet to get anywhere near his level of ability. Oh yeah, I also act...in local community theatre, lol.

About 45 years ago, a friend told me that Jerry Reed probably played Chet Atkins style better than Chet Atkins. I have long believed my friend was correct.
Good video my British friend! Jerry was an icon in the States, he was such a star that not many DID know that besides his film career he was revered as one of the greatest guitarists in all the land. I can remember back in September 2008, going to see my friend's band and they had an American singer over- he said that Jerry Reed had died- awful news, but he really was suffering with emphysema, so badly- as Tommy Emmanuel said: "He's out of pain, now." He was a one off, incredible talent in so many ways.
Jerry is such a character. I've seen him five times and was thoroughly entertained each time. He can go on playing the acoustic guitar for an hour nonstop. Then he gets up and funs with everyone.🤙🌴😎

Splendid job Fil, you really did your homework on this one! The movie Smokey and the Bandit came out the same year I graduated high school,1977. He was a legend in the world of guitar players, and from that very movie's soundtrack was released Eastbound & Down which made its way to number 2 on the country charts and I believe stayed there for a good while. Brings back some memories and also makes me feel old!

I always just remember him on Hee Haw and being a kind of clown but he actually could play! Interesting info. I didn't know he recorded with Elvis.
I saw Reed play a jazz solo about thirty years ago and was blown away. An interviewer asked him what he thought about influencing so many guitar players. He said, "I'm just playing around...Chet Atkins is a real guitar player". Sure, buddy.
A lot of those "variety show" people had their musical talent overlooked due to their having fun and clowning around on TV. Roy Clark and Charo are excellent musicians.
Loved Jerry Reed. Mad skills on the guitar. When I was a child, growing up in southern Kentucky, an hour outide of Nashville, it seemed like everyone played music. Both my dad and mom played in country bands. A lot of people did. Dad learned guitar by listening to Chet Atkins and other country guitarists. It was just a way of life. People would just gather and just play music together. It wasn't until I was grown, that I realized that wasn't the norm everywhere. My dad was still playing guitar in church just a couple of months before he died at the age of 78.

You HAD to be talented back in the day. There was no auto tune, no photoshop ... just talent.
They were genuine talents, not manufactured products who were picked for their t!ts or abs.
Some of the absolute best players were self taught, like Reed, Campbell, Clapton, Page, Knopler and Atkins.

Jerry Reed has to be in the top 25 all time guitarists. He was so versatile and fluid in everything he did. He was kinda mismanaged early on, but broke through nicely!

I remember hearing a comment from one of Jerry Reed's closest friends. The friend said this, Jerry could have been a superstar if he had been interested in doing so. Amen to that! That particular guitar is the model that Baldwin presented to a few Nashville pickers like Reed and Willie Nelson. Reed cut the top bout to get higher on the fretboard, and Willie’s was broken by a drunk at John T Floores, that’s when he ordered Trigger.

Just like Roy Clark, Jerry combined humour, story-telling and fun with awesome guitar playing. Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, Chet Atkins, and Jerry Reed were my guitar idols when I was growing up in the sixties. Sadly missed all of them.

When people say "underrated", they should be noting guys like Roy Clark, Glen Campbell and Jerry Reed (Chet Atkins has always gotten lots of props). While those guys were very well known in the 70's country music scene, they were definitely forgotten guitar heroes onward. As Fil noted, with Jerry Reed, the other aspects of their talent probably overshadowed their guitar playing.
And whomever keeps suggesting these videos, you are the real heroes.
Oh, it should be noted when Pat Metheny was young he backed Roy Clark on a gig. Pat gave him major props as a musician and person.

My grandfather knew him and played with him. They met at an Atlanta studio when they were teenagers. When my grandfather met him at the studio, Jerry was playing the banjo. My grandfather played guitar with him. From there they became friends. Moved to Nashville at the same time. He was my dads godfather. He got that sound, partially, by incorporating his superior banjo skills into the guitar.
I LOVE your appreciation of guitarists/musicians of all genres. I remember my parents loved him, so I got turned on to all types of music from my childhood. Excellent!

In addition to all of the things he could do, he was ahead of his time in video. He was the first country artist to use video projection and image magnification on his live shows. Jerry did it in 1983 and said that one day, every country act would be using video support. The industry laughed at the time, but his prediction had been borne out. He built Nashville's first independent broadcast quality post production and editing facility. Don't let the good ol' boy part mislead you, Jerry was way ahead of the crowd. He was a true genius and the consummate artist.
My dad says he saw Jerry at the (honest) Morgan County Sorghum Festival in 1982. West Liberty, Kentucky. Jerry - a fingerstyle virtuoso - played a flatpicked version of Sailor's Hornpipe, and Jerry killed it. Dad says it was all rained out, yet Jerry and his band closed with the theme to *Smokey and the Bandit* , a gigantic hit for Jerry, and they played it in the pouring rain, unwilling to leave the crowd without a big finale. Wish I'd been there.

Jerry talked about working with Elvis on tv right after he did that recording. I think it was the Ralph Emery show. It's been awhile. Anyway he said Elvis's Limo came to pick him up and he climbed into the Limo and sat down and he was looking right at Elvis. He said I said " Elvis, Son, you a purty man.

What an amazing guy! He was one of the first to be named a 'certified guitar player' by Chet Atkins. There’s a lot more picking in the real, good old country music than most people seem to think. Probably because of what an awful monster country music, as a genre, has mutated into in this day & age, and it’s really a shame what’s become of country music in the last decade or 2.

WOW! I was 17 at the time...yeah I'm an oldie but a goldie! Giggle! Most people remember him only for Smokey and the Bandit, which truly is Iconic but Jerry like Roy Clark is an American Icon and Legend! Legendary guitarist Chet Atkins once said that he believed that Jerry Reed was actually a much better guitarist than him.
Don't misunderstand, but I think Chet's statement was true about many other younger guitarists. BUT ... all of those guitarists pointed to Chet as "showing the way" and never lost that enormous respect and love for the man who guided and encouraged them. Both Tommy Emmanuel and Richard Smith continue to gush about Chester (and Jerry) all these years after their passings. The most telling part about Chet's legacy is that to this day, these same Chet understudies continue to play the songs that Chet wrote and/or arranged, pretty much the same way that Chet performed them. It's hard to improve perfection! As brilliant as Reed was, I think both Emmanuel and Smith are better than Reed today. In due course, these two will also one day be overtaken by future generations of thumb pickers. That's just the way it works.

I always try to watch the fret board and finger picking to see how he made the sounds he made but the weirdest is I try to spot if he has shoes on... more then one video I see him playing guitar without shoes on! About 45 years ago, a friend told me that Jerry Reed probably played Chet Atkins style better than Chet Atkins. I have long believed my friend was correct.
Chet himself claimed Jerry was a better guitarist.

I can remember back in September 2008, going to see my friend's band and they had an American singer over- he said that Jerry Reed had died- awful news, but he really was suffering with emphysema, so badly- as Tommy Emmanuel said: "He's out of pain, now." He was a one off, incredible talent in so many ways.
Jerry is such a character. I've seen him five times and was thoroughly entertained each time. He can go on playing the acoustic guitar for an hour nonstop. Then he gets up and funs with everyone.🤙🌴😎

Splendid job Fil, you really did your homework on this one! The movie Smokey and the Bandit came out the same year I graduated high school,1977. He was a legend in the world of guitar players, and from that very movie's soundtrack was released Eastbound & Down which made its way to number 2 on the country charts and I believe stayed there for a good while. Brings back some memories and also makes me feel old!

I saw Reed play a jazz solo about thirty years ago and was blown away. An interviewer asked him what he thought about influencing so many guitar players. He said, "I'm just playing around...Chet Atkins is a real guitar player". Sure, buddy.
A lot of those "variety show" people had their musical talent overlooked due to their having fun and clowning around on TV. Roy Clark and Charo are excellent musicians.

Loved Jerry Reed. Mad skills on the guitar. When I was a child, growing up in southern Kentucky, an hour outide of Nashville, it seemed like everyone played music. Both my dad and mom played in country bands. A lot of people did. Dad learned guitar by listening to Chet Atkins and other country guitarists. It was just a way of life. People would just gather and just play music together. It wasn't until I was grown, that I realized that wasn't the norm everywhere. My dad was still playing guitar in church just a couple of months before he died at the age of 78.
