My father is a retired police officer. He says the key to successful policing is to remember that you are a part of the community, not outside it. Their job is to protect and help everyone and the Sheffield police are doing a fantastic job.
We had a police officer that walked around the area all the timeeveryone knew him by his first name .if kids got in troubl he broughf them home to mum and dad.that was a different time .a better time.
My late father and brother, both police officers, had that special way when dealing with these tragic cases too. It takes a special person, in my opinion, to be able to connect and at times, empathise when carrying out their duties. A sense of humour is a great benefit also, I feel.
Had to walk home several miles with shopping bags cause of major bus problems. Got to my house to find it surrounded by yellow tape and police cause someone call in a bomb threat. When the policewoman told me I couldn't go home, I went ballistic and told her to carry my bags herself. She was so understanding and found me somewhere to sit and told me to rest until I felt better. British police can be some of the best.
In the UK, we (our police) deal with criminals differently than they do in the US. I think the relationship and how they are perceived in the UK is just different. Our police are much more approachable and naturally, they have always been seen as part of the local community. I imagine that you do get more of a local community policing in smaller towns across the US but in cities its much different.
I remember when we were in the states and had got a bit lost, we stopped at a gas station and I saw a police officer also fueling his car so I trotted over to him and said "excuse me officer" he immediately put his hand on his gun and just looked at me. I said "oh I'm trying to get to... Which way should I go ?" The response was "don't go down there " and pointed down a road it was a very different experience to interactions I had had over here
Ive been homeless and you feel unwanted by society. You feel worthless, hence some people turn to drugs, alcohol and prostitution. I was lucky, i found somewhere after a month or so, so i didn't go down those poor peoples road. I support my local homeless charity who do sterling work
I'm in north east england, under durham constabulary to be precise. I abuse alcohol and have done for many years and also am A drug user and not only do I hace zero concerns about being bothered by the police, the police are absolutely a point of help for people like me in the UK. I had to be interviewed under caution by the police but because my mental health wasn't so good the officer picked me up, drove me in the front seat, uncuffed, to the hospital and even bought me a mcdonalds on the way. If I ever commited a crime against another I'd fully expect the police to do their job and when I was younger, they di so lol, but honestly the police here, even as a drug user, I love them.
In the UK, an extra £25 is paid in benefits to alcoholics. This is due to it being a dangerous disease to just abstain from (doing do can result in death), so the extra money allows the recipient to buy the alcohol, reducing the need to commit crimes. Unfortunately, the homeless alcoholics don't receive benefits as a permanent address is required. Alcoholism is an awful disease and a large percentage of those affected would love to be completely "dry." It's so sad to see people existing in such a desperate way 😞 😢
Lots of homeless people, in fact all of the street homeless people I've worked with recieve benefits. If they havent claimed yet there is support to do so.
Pronounced " Sheffuld" to the locals ! Half an hour down the road in Chesterfield, it's very different. I live just south of Chesterfield, in a small " ex - pit " village where it's nice , quiet, and peaceful, and in general, most of the locals are normal hard working folk with morals and manners ! 👍🏴
So the street lady was fined £40 while the "client" was given a conditional discharge? How is the lady going to earn the £40? How many guesses do we need? 🤔🤔
@@PatriciaBaker-i9qThat may be true but it’s simply not realistic that there will never be men seeking the services or women selling. There are places where this business is off the street and in legal brothels. The workers are self employed and file taxes, get regular health screening and are significantly safer than those forced to walk the streets and getting into strangers cars. This lady is selling services for £10 and she just got a fine for £40!
From what i understand, unlike in the US prostitution it's self isn't a crime, but something to do with it being on the streets is, i heard it's complex but not something i've looked into
It's not especially complex. Basically prostitution, as in exchanging money for sex, isn't illegal. What's illegal is soliciting in public, or advertising your services.
Prostitution is legal, but you can't advertise or ask. You can make money from women who sell (Pimp) and you can't sell in a house with others. (Brothel) So it's a legal activity, that is illegal to try to carry out safely.
Most police officers are decent people. They care about victims of crime. The best ones also care about the criminals who have lost their way or are in active addiction. I have several good friends who are police officers. They are all really good people.
Our police are more relaxed because the threat of guns is out of the picture. These people are humans who are going through terrible times. It’s the dealers etc who are the real criminals. Not these people. Thank you for your reaction.
On the whole we have a very good policing in The UK. We use to have years ago Bobby on the beat. A police officer or two who was known to-the neighbourhood. Part of the community which is so important. We don’t have them anymore. We are short of officers , knife crime is a problem, generally when it comes to the homeless , people with addictions, mental health they handle them very well .
Gosh this makes me so sad. The fact the lady was fined £40 and she has no money anyway, has an addiction. How is fining her going to help ? She will just have to go and work more to make the money up. It’s just so so sad
Notice that change in British law concerning the right to silence. It may be 30 years or more old now, but the new bit is: if you come up with an excuse later in court which you didn't mention when arrested that silence when being arrested can be mentioned in court and the judge or jury may decide that suggests you are lying now.
When I lived in London our church would hand out sandwiches etc, and at Christmas hand out wrapped gifts. The atmosphere between homeless and not homeless was def more respectful towards each other. The receiving a wrapped gift and getting to unwrap it brought not to the person and seeing their joy brought not to us and it just forged connection :) I had this come up on my feed, I'm not really sure how America does housing first as I've not heard of it before, would be interested to see your game on it
most uk police are like this. However there are still some wrong ones, i say that cos i had runnings with drug squad in the 90s and they were like hooligans given a police badge.
Im a youth worker who does work with police sometimes , i find police generally brilliant they do work with community well , some years ago police were cut number and have taken years to rebuild trust, the uk are no means perfect but they do deescalate alot issues. And use local intelligence to help community trust, sadly a few bad police in news but on whole, police would rather less conflict then be heavy handed.
It’s so sad that people fall into these situations. None of us know whether or not something might befall us which will lead us down the same path. We need more people to help with the mental health crisis, yet my daughter has friends who have degrees in the field who can’t find jobs. It’s ludicrous when there is very obviously a need.
There are some stations that provide help, support and advice to ladies working on the streets. Her pimp probably wanted to go with her so she didn’t take any of their services! Costs him money and he could lose her! Sneaky bastards!
What exactly does a pimp offer that he thinks she owes him anything? Protection? If that guy was her pimp he couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag.Just a typical guy thinking he's owed for doing absolutly nothing.
I have a feeling it wasn't so much a case of the guy being in love, when the woman was being arrested. I fear it may be more a case of she is the one that is going out and making the money to feed both their addictions. If she's not out working, how is he getting his fix? Unfortunately this is a common occurrence. Also, the woman with the £40 fine, now has to give FOUR BJs to pay off the fine and do more to get enough to buy her fix. It truly is a life of slow torture. One I wouldn't wish on anybody. There is free treatment from Doctors to try and get off H. You heard one of the soup kitchen men saying he was on Methadone. You go in to a pharmacy everyday at the same time for your little cupful and try and stay on JUST that. I don't know if you get kicked off that program if you are still buying other stuff. There will be someone who will be able to fill us in on that.
It's also good to gather the info from the homeless guys too, should something major go down - they see things others don't, the notice oddities or strange behaviours - and even just checking up on them can yield good results. Not to mention, they can pass the person's condition onto Homeless charities/councils to try and get them off the streets and into care/back on their feet. This particular show I think was mid 00's - so things may have changed slightly.
One major difference is the British police do not have to face the reality of American officers that everyone they approach could very possibly have a gun. The last time a British police officer was shot and killed in the UK was 2020, before that it was 2012, a bad year when two women police officers were killed in a gun and grenade ambush and an off duty officer was shot by an armed man he approached.
