The Steven Stayner post abduction is a lesson in what not to do. Too much publicity. Look at abductees like Elizabeth Smart and Jaycee Dugard who's family did the right things at the time of their return. Yes. the public wants to know how they are doing (and some can argue deserve updates) but it has to be controlled in order for the person to heal. Uncontrolled media access can have the opposite affect than what is wanted.

This piece really glossed over a lot. I saw in other articles that Cary was always like this...scaring his female cousins, looking in their window, and he admitted to fantasizing about killing women when he was VERY young. Also, I read he was very jealous of the attention Steven got. There is actually a video of when Steven was rescued. It was during a press conference, heroes welcome or some large gathering when Steven came home. The camera panned to brother Cary, and Cary looked annoyed at the press coverage Steven was given. Law enforcement also suspected him of killing a family member, I think an uncle, but I would need to check on that. I also read that the mom was a cold person, and not affectionate at all. RIP Steven...

The thing I found odd in an interview with Steven, after reconciliation with his parents.. He said he does not remember much about his family life? He was 7 when he was abducted. I'm pretty sure I have lots of childhood memories up to this age.
Maybe Steven was not allowed to discuss in this interview. However Steven always seemed to appear detached and so did his parents.
Maybe they were just camera shy but there seemed no emotions displayed at all.
Maybe there were no emotions because they were exhausted with stress, coming to terms? Who knows.
But there is no excuse for what happened to Steven. That is all on Parnell.

From what I’ve read, I firmly believe there was something wrong with the family on both sides to begin with. Carey wasn’t kidnapped but he ended up murdering at least 5 women. The mother was molested by her own father. Then she allowed him to move in with them and their 5 kids. They were all weird. Interestingly, If you look at Steven and what he went through I’m surprised he didn’t end up like Carey. Steven seemed to be to closest to normal of them.

Just another example of how the courts, the judges failed to protect the innocent in society. Parnell should've been locked up for life. I read a bit more about the Stayner parents. It's really quite sad of what I read about the family. There was abuse, large amount of neglect and a pretty good amount of some mental health issues. But looks like not where Steven was concerned. I also read some on Kay Stayner. And sounds like she was getting poor instructions from her own father. Needless to say. IMO I don't feel that any sickness Carey was allegedly suffering from contributed to him becoming a rapist and serial killer. That was his choice to do those heinous crimes to those ladies. And since Kay stated that Carey was sick why in the hell didn't they address the issue before it ended up getting out of hand. Cause look what happened. All women should learn self defense, carry mace and learn to be more careful of opening any motel doors around midnight. These violent criminals aren't immune to being killed themselves. Anyway, that's my thoughts. RIP Steven Stayner.

This is such a sad story about a family who literally went through hell after what this scumbag did to their son. A child lost his life twice...... think about that, TWICE. The brother Cary turned to murder to satisfy whatever he was going through. Even after going to a psychiatric facility to get treated. The kidnapper only gets 5 years for what he did..... 5 YEARS. Only to get a life sentence for his next crime. Steven sadly passes away at an early age, and Cary goes to prison for his crimes. A family was completely destroyed by from a sick act by a sick, deranged man. I have no sympathy for murderers, rapists, or violent acts on children, even though Cary's acts are understandable. I hope God has mercy on this family AND Timmy White as well for what they went through Timmy was rescued by Steven only to die later of a pulmonary embolism.

I simply cannot believe that Steven's kidnapping played no role in Cary's psychosis. Trauma and neglect can do terrible things to a person. Even if his parents didn't mean to, they must've neglected the remaining children to a certain degree. I imagine Steven's death just pushed Cary over the edge.

Maybe, maybe not. Yu have no idea how a person will react to trauma and tragedy. Carey suffered a couple of mental breakdowns prior to his killing spree so it may very well be that he wasn't rational at all. But it also may be that he was pre disposed to become a serial killer as he did have a difficult time connecting with women during his teens. Add family trauma and mental illness into the mix and he was a pressure cooker waiting to explode. Tragic all around.

Think about how the parents must've handled him aft losing his brother twice. He was born a psychopath and raising one requires top notch control if you want them to function properly in society. The kidnapping must've taken a toll on his parents. They would've been raising a psychopath out of guilt, severely enabling him, overly protective, or just flat out ignoring him out of grief and resentment wishing it was him instead... either way it's a recipe for disaster

My mothers best friend (Auntie J) is Cary’s first cousin both aunt J and my mom went on a hike/camping trip with Cary. When they were 17 they were driving to the trail, when they got to a closed/locked gate Cary got so frustrated and upset he immediately came back and said we are turning around. They tried saying “lets go somewhere else” and he said “no trips done im taking you home”. Whether his plan was stopped due to this road block or he was so mad and didn’t want to hurt his cousin, we cant know, either way Im glad my mother couldn’t go with him that day. About a year later he was staying at my aunts dad his uncles and then when he decided to leave due arguments with his uncle he murdered him there was no forced entry to the home and he locked the door behind him he was the only other person with a key it was never proven but to many coincidences to not be him
