    • Remembering KIDNAP VIC...
Today I visit the gravesite of Steven Stayner, who's buried at Merced Cemetery in Merced, California.
Stayner was abducted by Kenneth Parnell, when he was seven-years old. When he escaped and returned home at the at of 14, his story made headline news around the world. Sadly, a decade later, Steven died in a motorcycle accident.
But the Stayner family crime story didn't end with Steven. In 1999, his older brother Cary, was convicted of killing four women in Yosemite, California. This is a story of two all-American brothers who became famous for all the wrong reasons.
Thanks for joining me today and for sharing the memories!

You hovered over my mom and dads grave at about 9 minutes in. Steven was my friend before and after his kidnapping. It was my birthday and it felt like Steve, and my mom and dad were wishing me a happy birthday from the other side. Thanks for the post. It was a sad and tragic end.

You mentioned trains and seeing that one pass near this cemetery reminded me of something. My grandfather loved trains. When he passed away and his funeral procession was getting close the cemetery, right in front of his hearse the bells started ringing, the crossing gates lowered and we all had to stop for the train that went by. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. There wasn’t a dry eye in the car we were in and when we all got to the cemetery others that knew about his love of trains were commenting on it.
Such a sad life and ending for Steven Stayner. Heartbreaking. Thank you for highlighting his story. May he rest in peace.💙

Wow Steve, Sherlock Holmes has nothing on you. When it comes to finding a difficult grave site you are dauntless.
The story of the two youngsters in this bizarre and twisted tale is very sad. To think that a disgusting animal (my apologies to animals whose actions are dedicated to survival) could ruin the lives of innocent children fills me with sorrow for the children and disgust for the perpetrator. As a Christian I believe the two innocent children are seated at God's table where only love and no want is present. Thank you Steve for this information follow-up to what you already have shared.

Thank you so much for this video Steve! As always it was awesome thanks to your great and through work! As weird as this sounds I love true crime and because of that I purchased the Steven Staynor Story on Dvd. I can clear up why Parnell was never charged for Steven's kidnapping is because prosecutors were counting on Steven's testimony to lengthen Parnell's sentence. He couldn't bring himself to even talk about it. He was too overcome and traumatized. All this according to the movie. May Steven rest in peace

  • @howardweiss5643

Steven’s story was made into a TV movie in 1989 called I Know My Name is Steven. I bought the movie later and watched it several times. It was based on the book with the same name. The book and movie are still available on Amazon for about $12 each for the movie or book.

He was never tried for Stephen. Statute had run already. He was convicted for Timothys kidnapping only. Everyone was his friend when he came home. Many kids ostracized him when he testified. It was pathetic. He left behind a sweet wife and two sweet little children. Carey copped a plea that avoided the death penalty

Parnell got 22 months for Steven due to California law at the time. Parnell got 5 years for Timothy White, whose trial was first. When stevens trial came up the most the judge could give was 22 extra months for Steven, served _concurrently_ not _consecutively_ , meaning the 22 months were served as part of Whites time, not *after* awful, stupid laws that should have never been.
The last child he abducted or tried to, the woman was his caretaker, she knew his history, turned him in, and when he paid the money for a 5 year old boy, he was arrested. Thankfully, no actual child was involved.
Stevens story is so sad, he was just beginning to live again. He left a wife and two children. Parnell started him on drugs, he was high when killed in the motorcycle accident, so in a way Parnell killed him in the end.
Carey is mentally ill if read of him, problems began as a young man. Newer books of I know my first name is Steven have updated part on Carey as well. Timmy of course died young of natural causes. Sad story all around..RIP STEVEN, TIMMY, (JOIE, CAROLE, JULIE, SVETLANA) ..CAREYS VICTIMS

I remember the story from when Steven escaped and took young Timmy with him. Also the TV movie. And then to find out Steven's brother Cary was a serial killer! Wow! What that family went through.

Wow, it was nice to see Stevens gravesite. I have read a lot about him over the years and watched the movie that was made. He had no help intergrading back into his previous life and former classmates in school were cruel as they had no understanding what he had been through. Family tried to help but they also had no support or counseling. This was a enjoyable video Steve. I too like to see the hotel rooms. I recently moved to Hawaii and have been visiting a lot of hotels!

It makes you wonder if he would still be alive if he had had therapy and support after this life shattering event. Glad you enjoyed seeing the room. Hawaii sounds awesome. Aloha!

Jessy Stayner, the uncle buried next to Steven, was murdered in his home in 1990, and no arrest has ever been made. There is speculation that Cary killed Jessy, because they were living together in the home at the time.

Lovely room, Steve. Very cheerful looking, and it has everything u need👍🏿.
The Metro North commuter train runs up n down Park Ave in NYC., to Grand Central Station. I sometimes hear its whistle as it's passing thru East Harlem, in Manhattan, where I grew up.
Anyway, thank u yet again for allowing me to "travel" with u. I've never visited California. So it's nice to see different states & places one has never been.
    RIP Steven Stayner✝️🕯🌷
    Travel safe, Steve🙇🏽‍♀️

I well remember the Steven Stayner case, and had hoped he finally found peace and a brighter future. I agree that he is no longer suffering from the terrible things that took away his innocence. May he rest in peace. Oh, by the way, Merced, California is where the actress of the classical era, Jeanne Crain. came from.
