Beyond the design questions - does Monsters Inc really have a strong enough brand recognition to withstand 10-20 years or is this just a “lets do this for the sake of doing something” kinda deal and see what sticks?

crazy thing is they don't even need Disney themed lands - frontier land, adventure land, space mountain, thunder mountain etc. aren't from films. it just needs to have a cohesive vibe. I guess that makes it harder to sell merchandise though

@@outriggerundergroundArguably the parks best things come from original ideas that aren't IP based but fuck if modern imagineering has an ounce of creativity to be able to create a new story and a new world from the ground up. Look at HM and Pirates. Both original ideas. Or if you want a 21st century example, Mystic Manor is loosely based on HM but is it's own thing and it's a lovely experience with a good story. Disney has proven they don't need to stick their characters in everything for it to be successful.

If the EPCOT "improvements" are any indication on what to expect, I would not put much faith in the new art work. By the time it actually gets built the budget and details will be reduced to account for delays in construction and planning. Disney is no longer the imagination and detail oriented company it once was.

EPCOT once had a cogent theme, a unified environment with attractions that related to one another. It tried to mean something by aspiring to a balance of educational and entertainment experiences. Now, it's just a hodge-podge of unrelated experiences (maybe with the exception of World Showcase).
"Guardians" may be a cool ride, but it has nothing to do with real-world sciences - other than the coaster incorporating a contemporary use of physics.
EPCOT has been reduced to a park with outdated and evanescent theming.

I think a Monsters, Inc. land could work, but to make it truly perfect, they need to focus on making the entrance more immersive. Having it located right next to the entrance of Galaxy’s Edge doesn’t feel like the best choice, as it’s likely to create heavy crowd congestion in that corner of the park. Instead, they should have considered moving the entrance closer to the Star Tours area, allowing for better crowd flow.
Additionally, the entrance design should feel like a real gateway into the Monsters, Inc. universe-something akin to the immersion you experience at Diagon Alley in Universal Studios. Universal has figured out what’s beating Disney right now: guests don’t just want great theming; they want full immersion. What they don’t want is a quick, cheap fix-painting some walls, adding a few monster eyes, and calling it a day. Disney needs to go all-in to create a land that feels authentic and magical, not something that simply hopes to fool guests with surface-level details.

tbf, Monstropolis is basically just a typical Human city like you'd see in Boston or Seattle or somewhere, it looks just like a normal city but with some subtle "spike" ornamentation to give it charm, like the the grill of Mike's car being spiked teeth, so its not that it wont be well themed, its just that the conversion wont even require that much effort to begin with

I love a coaster as much as anyone and this looks fun, but it’s hard to say I’m “sure” the land will be great. Current state of Disney is more 🤞than “sure” and that’s disheartening. Let’s hope the land is more than a tunnel to the coaster. Because the one sure thing is that a large capacity theatre is going to be replaced with a virtual queue, ILL, and eventually (? see Guardians) long standby attraction.

I hope Disney does not do like Universal and Knott's Berry Farm and constantly fill their parks primarily with roller coasters. There comes a time when the person who was able to ride those coasters will no longer be able to do so which leads to the need to have plenty for them to do when visiting those areas of the park. Age has nothing to do with it here as my younger brother (who is 7 years younger than myself) cannot handle a lot of roller coaster rides and certain other rides, such as Astro Orbiter, and I currently have no problem with them as of this time. Disney should not feel a need to compete with Universal as each one has their own style of entertainment. Disney built their reputation on being able to tell a story. I live about 30 minutes driving time from Universal Studios Hollywood. I remember it as being a place where you would find some shops (not as many as now), some places to eat (unlike the pricey sit-down service places they have now) and several shows along with the studio tour tram ride and that was it.

You are spot on - the real question of whether or not Disney is serious will come down to how they develop the other side of the park given the constraints with the current office space taking up too much valuable park real estate along Hollywood Blvd. If they were removing the entire parking lot behind where Monsters Inc land is headed and constructing a new office park I'd be inclined to think that Disney was thinking long term about the health of this park. Since that doesn't appear to be the case, they are just patch-working with a band-aid solution.

Epic Universe is looking to be absolutely incredible and is going to draw in people who never even really considered going to Universal. While Avatar looks beautiful and sounds like an incredible land, I contribute that to the heavy involvement of Joe Rhode and not Disney.

It seems like the Disney and Henson companies are both to blame for the lack of theme park presence. It does make sense that Monsters Inc is still relevant and has a definitive universe consisting of cityscapes and campus which fits in that corner of the park. If the immersion included animated windows it could have a really long shelf life. While the door coaster is an older concept, it is still a great one whose time has come. Just please do not slap in a Laugh Floor and call it a day! As for the Muppets, I'm a huge fan and hate to see the changes, but that area of the park feels like an afterthought and their main store has been closed. Since the Muppets don't have a designated "world" a studio/lab type land would work, and I hope that the corner where Rockin Rollercoaster resides will absorb a Muppet expansion. While swapping Aerosmith with the Muppet solves a few problems, it does mean that there isn't a family friendly Muppet experience, unless your family has a proclivity for inversions. There has been an increase in Jim Henson programming which leads me to believe that there is still a beautiful tomorrow for Kermit and the gang. I do believe that the Villains show is Disney's reaction to Epic Universe and the success of the Dark Universe will dictate how the Villains project proceeds. It's not like there aren't a few 'theatres' in DHS that could house the Villains show freeing up the Sunset Blvd corner for a Muppet mini-land. Like Monsters Inc, a Muppet land would greatly benefit from immersion with animated windows, props, and Muppet window appearances as they did in Liberty Square.

I can imagine how much fun Mike and Sulley will be throughout. And think about it: Slinky Dog is an almost un-themed family coaster and it draws MASSIVE crowds all day long. Excellent break-down of the Monstropolis project Brickey! You are so right to question if this land feels thrown together, and to wonder if it stands up to modern theme park competition. The approach Disney is taking here of reusing existing buildings (with fairly cosmetic changes) and taking the same approach in Tropical America's at Disney Animal Kingdom, is signaling a serious frugality. That's why back home at Disney California Adventure I find it hard to believe the same Parks leadership will demolish all the structures of Hollywood Land/Backlot as rumored. I think we'll see that same frugality at play. I'm sorry if that feels like a digression, but really my point is that your questions about Monstropolis -- is frugally re-skinning a land to make a new land truly a competitive, long-term approach? -- applies across multiple Disney Parks.

12:36 I'm so glad you brought this up about the concept art including the backstage area. While I was looking at these concept images again while you're showing them in the video, it struck me how interesting it is that Disney chose to show us all of the building's actual shapes and movie-set-like facades (0:56 + 5 seconds) in that particular image versus some fantastical representation of the area as Disney is notorious in doing in their park maps. Granted these were from D23 and seem more meant for internal visualization rather than mass marketing, but nonetheless, it's respectable (insomuch as a multi-national corporate conglomerate can be) that they dropped the act for the public at all.

Hey Bricky! Another great video. I’m not concerned about how Disney has dusted off an old Monsters, Inc. idea. Imagineering is always developing attraction concepts for new and old IPs. The fact Disney is now rolling out a Monsters, Inc. land shows its time has finally come. We’re finally getting a long overdue Lion King attraction in Paris. The fact Disney shared competing Monsters, Inc. land concept art shows they toyed with placing the land in various locations (including the California Adventure Backlot). That’s fine. Is Monsters, Inc. land enough to compete with Epic Universe? No! But, that’s not the full story. Disney is building Monsters, Inc. land, Tropical Americas, new Frontierland, and Villains land. Is that enough to compete. Probably, yes. Is more to come at D23 2026? Probably, yes.

  • @willrontani5894

Not certain they see this as a high risk play. Disney knows new attractions sell tickets. Universal quite frankly doesn’t really compete (which isn’t that popular an idea with theme park fans). But, I do point to the Hollywood park as the main reason why I say this. There is nothing NBC/Universal can do to make their Hollywood park any more than a half day. Which is why they had to expand in florida and texas. WDW has maxed out in their development plans outside cosmetic and land expansion to under utilized areas.

It feels a bit like a step back. Monsters Inc is great, but it was great 15-20 years ago also. It’s like Disney is stuck in their past, almost hesitant to try out new ideas. They need about 15 new, ORIGINAL ideas, then go to the theme parks from there.

They keep on removing attractions and moving things around which is actually more costly I mean what the hell is this new thing these days then they wonder why they're being criticized all the time.

I feel like Epic is forcing Disney’s hand a little to move on these projects. Hopefully they design these areas and attractions the old Disney detailed way not the new EPCOT modern Disney way. I also feel like they may try to rush these projects to compete. Hopefully they take their time and do them right like they did with Pandora. We’re OK waiting longer for perfection.

Monsters Inc land will be a great addition at first. Just like muppets courtyard was a great addition at first. It’s all about how Disney will handle the franchise after they build it. Disney has bungled the muppets into general obscurity. It’s been 24 years from part 1 and 12 years from part 2. So they’re going to have to release a part 3 within the next 5 years to really capture the hype. Hopefully it will be a good movie and then they can keep building on the franchise thus keeping the land fresh and relevant for 10-20 years.

The Laugh Floor suspended ride coaster will be an off-the-shelf system that Disney can quickly install. Don't expect a "Guardians of the Galaxy" EPCOT coaster, folks. Monsters Inc. Land will be compared to Super Nintendo World at Epic Universe, no way for Disney to avoid it.

Basically slightly adding capacity at the MK only in about 7 years. Not very well thought out. They have reduced capacity while Epic is increasing capacity. Iger has stated he knew about this for over 10 years. People blames Chapek for a lot of Disney cutbacks, but they continue long after he left and Iger is still there. The board needs to fire Iger. He should have been fired shortly after he took over the second time.

While I agree that Epic Universe is going to suck some of Disney's parkgoers, I do not think that this Monsters Inc. plan will take any of that traffic back. Not only does the loss of the Muppet Vision sadden many people but they are going to take years to complete the whole thing. They need to just use some of their mass amounts of land to add a new section on the park or just a whole new park. Don't forget that they are already tearing up the Magic Kingdom. And from what I have seen from their new "updates" they are missing the mark on every level.

Y'know, ever since I was a kid, I had always wanted to go to Disney Park. I almost got to go once but then it never happened. As the years go by, I slowly just don't care for the land anymore because of their morals going in the wrong direction. Especially with them taking down history between the Muppets creator and Disney from when they worked together to try and create a wonderful land for Muppet fans alike before his passing. It just hurts to see Disney going in the wrong direction not only with their movies but also their parks.

  • @Just_a_guy06

Nothing Disney has done in the recent past gives me any reason to be excited or for me to put faith in what they’re doing. The fact that they decided to copy galaxy‘s edge from California exactly and drop it into Florida, made it to where they completely locked themselves in And screwed themselves over for any type of expansion. If they would’ve designed that differently, they would’ve had all that room that they used to turn into employee parking as a new expansion pad and you wouldn’t have to get rid of any of this. You could have kept Muppets where it’s at And use the Muppets area to lead into a monsters Inc. land without having to get rid of anything. Also, I’m not really sure who is still into monsters Inc. I don’t see that being a a very popular IP anymore. They want to make brand new lands for cars and monsters Inc. and arguably their most popular character right now is Moana and all she got was a splash pad

Don't get me wrong I like Monsters Inc. But it's unfortunate that it has to replace the Muppet land area. It's disrespectful to Jim Henson. A man I didn't know much about until I learned the news of his final project being demolished. Disney no longer cares how much love and effort you put your mind into something you worked so hard for. They're literally the villains. We've somehow ended up in an alternate reality that sucks.

I know there is history with Disney and Muppets, but at the current age of television and park goers, does Muppets hold enough to keep going?? I believe this is why Disney picked this area to refresh and bring in new life.
Original Mosters movie has been around for a long time now. It's still relevant to up and coming children and young adults at this time.

This is exactly how anyone under 40 feels about the Muppets. That is 1000% Disney’s fault for not putting out movies and shows to get Millennials and Gen-Z interested. So they pretty much ruined the brand.

With the recent closing of Splash mountain, and replacing it with Tiana’s Bayou, as well as other rides in the past that have been replaced or repurposed, we are left wondering if Disney knows the value of keeping the classics alive. It fails to impress me that Disney thinks the next best thing is actually the next best thing. And who are they competing against? Surely with all the Disney parks and the hefty price tag to get in, Disney should be doing well, without having to redesign a ride, or create a whole new area, where a once beloved attraction is still bringing in guests.
I think you said it correctly when you stated “too little too late” We are a decade from when the Monsters Inc came out, and it doesn’t seem like the excitement is still lingering on. I think it would be better to refresh the Muppets, in Honor of Jim Henson, and just make it new again.
If Disney feels the need to compete with the newer animated movies, then create a whole new theme park, allowing those newer movies to dwell there. And be smart in the purchase of the land, so that future animation movies can be added to that park without taking a ride down or re-theming a ride. It makes more sense to build a new park (and they will come) than to destroy what we have had for years. And to be quite honest, bring back some of those attractions that we loved so dearly. We tend to get rid of things to easily.

why is everyone making fun of disney in the comments and comparing them to Epic Universe? Epic isnt even coherent, its 4 random IPs stitched onto a galactic-themed hub. The only uniquely awesome land is the Universal Monsters land, which looks to have a great dark ride and a painfully brisk kid's spinner coaster. We've already seen Mario in 2 other universal parks so we have a good idea of what it will be before it even launches here, since its basically a cloned land, and the donkey kong cart ride looks very short. Dragons is a cool land but its primarily for kids, and no dark rides either, with essentially a lite version of Hagrid's being the real attraction there. harry potter is interesting but the idea of a parisian city street is LITERALLY almost the same to what disney is doing here, and yet you guys are applauding universal for making what amounts to 2 great dark rides (including frankestein and HP) and a giant mack dueling coaster that isnt themed at all. im excited for epic too, but it isnt like THEY'RE making these timeless, IP-free rides. they do the same stuff disney does, with more immersion in some cases, sure, but we havent seen any truly unique rides like pirates or haunted mansion or space mountain from universal since dueling dragons

The park needs more dark rides not another under capacity roller coaster. A Muppet dark ride would be better. They could also dig up the Nightmare Before Christmas dark ride. Monsters is just what WDW has been deduced to a family Six Flags style coaster that they can charge $20 for people to ride in their app or melt them in the sun as wait hours to ride standby then they can eat at a quick service with no seats or tables. I find it sad that DreamWorks at Universal Studios Florida has better design astics then Toy Story Land which was too lazy to even get the scale right
