No, it's called keeping your audience engaged. It's not meant to be entertainment and I can't imagine anybody finds her abduction funny. However, there are always odd, if not humorous, anecdotes in even the worst situations. Nobody wants to see somebody stand there and cry for 45 minutes.
I find Elizabeth to be an amazing speaker, somebody who retells unimagineable events that changed her life. The fact she is so strong, so normal, so grounded, is a testament to who she is and to her family.

After all these years I just read her book "My Story". I really admire her so much! She stayed in tune with God's spirit and survived. She has not allowed herself to be victimized all of her life! Such a strong and spiritual young lady who is making a difference in the world. Thank you Elizabeth Smart for being such a strong advocate!

no just the only way she can tell it, without crying every time...humour is an armor to protect her.

I believe she's telling the truth. Though, I must agree that she seems too enthusiastic & energetic about telling her story. I think she just decided to adopt this "style" of speaking after she became an advocate & public speaker. The first few years after her rescue she spoke differently - more like a victim in a way. Although I don't care for her speaking style, she's still an inspiration. And kudos to her for turning the "victim" inside of her into a "victor" inside & out. Bravo!

People think she's faking because she's telling it with joy. Well, some people take pain differently. Some people get mentally traumatized or some people actually move forward and try to find happiness. Like Jessica Mullenburg look at some videos before her kidnapping in 2001, she's usually happy and joyful. Look at an interview she did in 2009 she seems very depressed, sad, and traumatized and day-to-day life is hard. She took the pain a different way than Elizabeth.

Trauma isnt always crying and becoming quiet and depressed. Sometimes its laughing, distancing yourself from that experience, and smiling about it. She is who she is today because of all of her life experience including her kidnapping and it seems that she is okay with that and has done the work it takes to cope with something like this. It probably is scripted but that doesnt make it fake. Speaking in public is scary for some people and writing out and memorizing what you're gonna say first can help ease that

You've got problems, C Noble. Elizabeth may do a great job speaking at these engagements but I am quite sure this is not how she envisioned her life. She was thrust into this situation, she did not seek it out. Because she happens to educate others by telling her story doesn't mean she wouldn't trade her horrific abduction and captivity for a normal childhood in a heartbeat. Of course she would. Please keep your ignorant, sad comments to yourself.

She was on Nancy Grace to help push a victims right bill through not discuss her ordeal on t,v. with the ever so nosy Nancy Grace. I think she wants to put people at ease and can now speak without the complete shock of her KIDNAPPING you need a shrink

You are obviously not a female rape victim and should keep your opinions to yourself.

Why is she telling such a horrible story with a smile and with humor? I know she is used to traveling and sharing this story over and over so she isn't going to cry every time, but smiling and trying to be cute and funny?! A little out of place

This was pathetic on Grace's part. She sounded condescending toward Smart. She put on this ridiculous motherese voice. Frankly, it's embarrassing to watch. Smart is obviously annoyed, at understandably so.
