Hey! Been following you guys for a while now, can't believe you moved mid-pandemic and did the whole hotel quarantine thing! Fair play! We lived in QLD for a year and a half before coming home to Ireland a few years ago. I'm a teacher as well, and taught on the Gold Coast at the time, but thinking we were coming back to Ireland for good I let my registration lapse. My partner was scaffolding over there but graduated as an engineer here about 7 months ago - the job hunt for him has been ridiculously disheartening, and Aus is really starting to look more appealing yet again! Your videos are really informative - thanks a mil!

Yes would be good to see if you're better off in Australia or the UK after converting the currency. As you said seems like you have more money now but would be interesting to know (Yes nosey bugger 😉). Plus you got a nice big home and pool that you said you wouldn't be able to afford in the UK .
Good idea to install solar panels they do help with the cost of power. Looking at getting a solar battery storage unit to make full use of the panels. Now that they have come down heaps in price and size. Some can store up to 18hrs in a blackout.

    • @ThatJohnstonLife

5:16 instead of getting life insurance, maybe check your superannuation fund. They usually have life insurance built it.

That home insurance sounds very cheap (especially if it's comprehensive) - is it building only, or contents as well.
Re Life Insurance, it's worth checking your super - sometimes (I'd like to say often - I think it has with every super fund I've used) life insurance is included in super (well, not really included, they'd be taking a premium out of your super).

    TLDR fucking expensive obviously 😂
Hence why im thinking 100% off grid
Well rainwater tanks solar and wind.
Wood stove for backup heating/cooking (especially in winter)
Passive house so i only need the bare minimum of energy lowering my needs even further for the same conditions.

  • @RJS4287

Thanks - your house insurance seems a bargain - does it also cover contents? Medical Insurance is expensive and Medicare is fine when young and fit. But the later you start it the more you pay. It is a lot more if you leave starting it until you are 50 say. The big advantage is less waiting times and choice of hospital and specialist. Solar saves me about 33% of my electricity bill - but this could go down as the buy back rate falls. Besides solar not sure why the big increases in fuel bills worrying the UK is less prominent here.
