    Although the newer AirCon systems are more energy efficient, they will still chew the juice quite a bit.
    If you haven't got it yet look into solar panels. They won't eliminate your power bill but it will bring the bill down considerably.
    The Queensland government has good incentives to install as well.

    I'm not familiar with Brisbane so I can't say for sure but it's probably worth looking into your local markets. In Melbourne quite a lot of people do their grocery shopping at Queen Victoria market, Prahran market, Preston market or Dandenong market.
    It's especially good if you go around 11am on Saturdays because the vendors sell meat, seafood and poultry way cheaper than any supermarket. Food for thought (excuse the pun)
    I'm sure Brisbane has fresh produce markets too. You probably should look into it. Supermarkets are ok as far as convenience goes but you pay considerably more for that convenience.

    If you like a sharp cheese you may enjoy Mersy Valley Classic flavor. It has a nice crumble but it could be really soft in QLD heat - not sure.
    Also, on the heat, La Niña has made this a mild summer on the East coast. Yes, there have been hot days, but you can expect runs of baking hot days during summer over the next couple of years. Having AC upstairs will be a blessing!

    Everyone who moves to Australia moves here for a better life style. You guys seem to be getting right into the new lifestyle enjoying the sun and everything that goes with it. I don’t understand why some other families that move here choose to try and recreate their old lifestyle in a new place sure keep some family traditions and culture of course. We love learning about and experiencing other cultures and often our friends will oblige and we enjoy doing similar in return.
    When my parents first arrived in Australia their new friends invited them for a barbecue and ask them to bring a plate. My mum thought they must be short of plates and brought a plate, an empty plate. Yep mum and dad soon learned. As a kid I remember inviting friends over for a barbecue mum was perplexed that our guests would bring their own meat what was wrong with hers was it not good enough? They soon adjusted however to this day please don’t bring food when you’re invited as a guest to a European-Aussie household. But everything else is complete Aussie spec.

    That comes out to about $6.90(USD) per pound, which would be a great price for Porterhouse(New York steak in the US). In the US, a "Porterhouse" would be that same section but with the bone and a large cut of the Tenderloin attached. In conventional non-regional English that is a boneless loin strip steak. "Potato Gems" are called "Tater Tots" in the US, they were invented in the eastern portion of my state of Oregon in the US, in 1953. Eggs are cheap!

I'm sure you've already discovered some of the water parks around the place.Not sure which area your in but there is a huge free pool with area for the kids.,at Orion shopping area at Springfield lake. I have not been to South bank in years but I think there is a free beach type swimming lagoon there still. Now you understand why Queensland has produced some dynamite Olympic swimming legends 😀 it's a place where the water is part of your childhood. Even if it's just at the local creek 😃

    If you want to get more upmarket food the "dumpster dives" at Woolies and Coles are pretty good. Both have tried to go for some more upmarket salads and meat dishes but they usually have relatively short use by times which means they tend to have discounted ones that need to be used in a day or two pretty often. If you are near one of those it's worth checking those sections now and then to get those sort of things at a discounted price - they often tend to do discounts late afternoons on bread and that sort of baked stuff that always have pretty short use by dates so if you know when they normally do that at your local you can time a shopping run and snap up some nice stuff that you can eat that night or the next day. Also Coles and Woolies tend to alternate discounts so for instance I like the various Uncle Bens Rices as side dishes with meals but the regular price is about 3.20 but probably once a month it's around 1.60 so you just have to watch out and snap those sort of things with long distance use by dates up in bulk when they are cheap. It's worth noting too that ALDI is cheaper for most things but not all and it's worth comparing - things like meat skewers are actually pretty cheap at Woolies and they are perfect Barbie fodder and the ALDI versions are actually slightly more expensive a lot of the time. Prices do tend to vary by area too so where you live can effect what you pay by a lot more than you'd expect sometimes.

    The problem with ducted to all rooms but with only 1 control in the upstairs common area, usage can be wasteful n inconvenient.
    We were renting a new house in sydney which had a Samsung AC.
    While only 2 rooms upstairs needed the AC... All 4 rooms come on too.
    To adjust the temp... We had to walk out of the room. Having a control panel per room may be costly but is more economical in the long run.
    Aldis.. Do try the Choceur range of chocolates.
    My fav is the hazelnut n rum n rasin.
    The block is milky n so full of fresh tasting nuts.
    Cheap too.
    To me, it beats Cadbury, Aero, Nestle.... Enjoy..

    • @ThatJohnstonLife
      @ThatJohnstonLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Will definitely look at those chocolates. We had the same concerns with ducted, but ours is all wifi controlled with individual controls in each room to. Every room can be individually pre-set and the unit is designed to shut off once the rooms have reached the desired temperature to save energy. The unit will even run at reduced capacity if we only need cooling to 1 or 2 rooms. The technology nowadays is much better

    Having lived as a dual citizen on and off in the UK and Australia for the past 30 plus years - one of the few things I miss about the UK is the ability on occasion to go to "top of the range" supermarkets. My dinky-di , fifth generation Australian wife agrees. I know it is expensive but we really miss Waitrose - nothing compares in Australia for quality and choice. I even think Sainsbury's is actually better than Coles or Woolies which I would rate along with Asda and Tesco's. My local Aldi here in Sydney is better than the ones I can remember where we lived in Caversham in the UK - though I am almost grateful Lidl abandoned plans to come here. From what I remember it was cheaper than Aldi but a bit depressing. Not sure how Brexit might impact on choice. M and S threatened to come to Australia for years - the nearest they got was Singapore and I am not sure that one is still open. The M and S online service is excellent and their value is very good if you want something a bit better than Target or Big W. But having accounts on both their UK (so I can send stuff to my UK friends and relatives) and Australian sites, they charge Australians more (and it is just not the delivery costs). It is a bit like international airfares (if you remember them). The same ticket will cost you more to the same destinations on the same airline depending whether you buy and start your journey in the UK or Australia. In Qantas' case it has been up to 30% more for me (a few years ago) - they say they price for local market conditions.

    • @ThatJohnstonLife
      @ThatJohnstonLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We know Caversham well having lived in Reading. We never really shopped at the premium supermarkets in the UK, however think they're missing out over here with some of the dine in deals that M&S used to do

    • @offshoreblue9198
      @offshoreblue9198 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ThatJohnstonLife We liked Caversham as I could bike to the station as I worked near Paddington and my wife worked at Henley. At the time both Caversham and Henley had Waitroses. My wife said Henley was the best place in the world for Charity Shops - rich older people and no young uni students. We left in 2010 after 5 years in UK. I can still vote in Reading until 2024 as I have both UK and Australian passports. Reading Borough Council send me a reply paid airmail postal vote. I wouldn't have bothered except (to be controversial) I wanted like most Aussies to vote no to Brexit. Partly ideological, partly because a UK passport is now a lot less useful and partly because I have a few assets in the UK and Brexit has hit the pound exchange rate badly. When I first moved to Australia in the 1990s it was 47p to the Aussie Dollar - I daren't look now but it must be 20% weaker. (you need not comment!). Just in terms of moving abroad my wife as an Aussie had to go through as many immigration hoops as you - "Life in Britain tests" etc, plus it cost us about 2,000 pounds in total to get her a visa. She actually got in on a speeding ticket! When we went down to the Home Office in Croydon we had twenty documents in our joint names but then they asked us for something in her name only (which was not on the form). If we did not produce anything we did our 950 pounds for that part of the process. So she gave up her speeding ticket - I thought we might "fail" but the bloke said "that will do - we all have them, they give them out at ASDA".

I don't buy their fruit and veg and there are whole sections which are definitely not cheap/not good. Never touch their ice cream, crisps, bisciuits, or chocolates or coffee/tea, which are all rubbish. Except for frozen fish, nearly all their frozen foods are somewhat more expensive.

    Go to Farmers markets ,butchers and fruit n veg shops, rather than awful supermarkets. The prices of fruit and veg will change with the season. It is a far healthier way to eat and better environmentally.
