I will be in Sydney in the fall of 2017 and would love to stop by and meet you. I am a retired professor of education but my career spanned 22 years as writer, arranger, and composer for a company in Nashville, Tennesse, USA for live musical productions. I am in a catch-up mode, transitioning to computer-based composition from the traditional paper method. I am fully aware of Garageband but have recently added Pro Tools First as well as a couple of musical scoring programs. These tutorials really have helped me jumpstart my learning curve.
Crash Zero Thanks for that. Yes, I find that when people are first starting out on Pro Tools there's some things that SHOULD work, but occasionally don't. So I try and cover those bases! Cheers for the comment.
Thank you SO MUCH for making this video series. Your explanations are easy to understand and you do a great job of explaining the "why" behind a lot of concepts. Can't wait to keep learning!
These videos are so amazing. I'm a 19 year old drummer and I've always been so incredibly interested in music production, but these programs really felt like a huge step to me, to just start and make something on the computer instead of my instrument. It was pretty demotivating, but these videos made so much clear and I'm now looking forward to learning more from you and by playing around with the program myself! Thanks a lot and greetings from the Netherlands!
Dear mr. de wilde, you are very well versed in pro tools, i would like to take the time to pesonally thank you. After watching your and some others lessons i have come to realize that instead of the 20 - 30 percent that i thought i knew about pro tools, i have come to realize that it is about 8 percent. I was an analog engineers assistant in 1980s now im trying to do it my self. I did take the 1990s and the 2000s off. I am a big fan. Thank you sir, truely yours, Paulie G.
These tutorial are just amazing... you answered dozens of my questions and saved me a lot of time. Can't wait to see the other ones. Thanks again, from Canada.
I've learnt more from you, Jason, in the few minutes I've been watching your videos than I have in months of having my head buried in manuals. Thank you.
Awesome videos! I watched all five in one sitting very easy to understand which is more than I can say for most ProTools tutorials. I am looking forward to your future mini lectures! Cheers
Thank you so much for your video which is so easy to understand and to follow. I am really a singer/songwriter who is new to Pro Tools and particularly Midi.
even though this is a year old, i still learned very well how to record midi stuff now using instruments provided by pro tools so i really appreciate it!
Wow thank you for this I just got a midi keyboard for christmas and am going to school for recording. In my Midi class this past semester we didn't cover Midi in protools unfortunately , it was all in Reaktor and Logic so this is very helpful! :)
HI Jason! I'm just about to start a sound engineering course at my local college and I've been using your videos on the basics of ProTools so I'm not going into the course completely clueless! Been super helpful and I can't wait for part 6!
Love the lessons....If I may make a suggestion.....the audio track for pro tools is considerably louder than the voice track ...it would be good for us older students who struggle to hear the voice track !!! Thank you!!!
Fantastic tutorials really well explained. I feel so stupid now I've been using Cubase since its inception and though I've had ProTools free for several years, I've never used it. I was worried about learning a whole new program and how much time iI would waste when I should have been being creative. BUt this all so logically and well explained, I should just dive right in there. Awesome
Hey, how’s aboucha? I used the DB33 and had fantastic latency problems. I am slowly working them out but, for us dummies, a video on dealing with latency would be terrific. Thanks for your instructions!
These are terrific videos, but there don't seem to be any more videos past this one, Part 5. Were any more created (and I'm not seeing them on TH-cam) or is this the last one?
David Kramer Hi David. So far, only 5 have been created. Part 6 is on my (very big) list of things to do. Cheers for the comment, and I'll get on to the next part as soon as i can! Cheers. Jase
Great videos for beginners...I'm one! I am having a problem however with the midi instruments...I can only see the "factory default" option. When I click on the drop down, there is no menu...I just got pro tools 12 and I slould have all kinds of presets, etc. Any suggestions?
Great video man! So hopeful! I have a problem, I made instrument track and everything like you did, but cant hear my DB 33, why is that so? ( I can hear my other audio tracks)
Hey there Stipe. Thanks for the comment. With your DB33 issue, make sure that the output slot for your DB33 track is set the same as your other audio tracks. PT frequently sets new tracks to weird outputs that don't make sense sometimes. Check that and let me know how you go. Cheers. Jase
Thank you sir, output was the problem! You should know that there are no much producers out there who are willing to share these precious informations to us beginners. I cant describe how much we are thankful! Wish you all the best!! Merry Christmas
Here my request Please make for us those who need I want to use PRS- 650 YAMAHA KEYBOARD AS MIDI CONTOROLOR please show me how to set up and how to get drivers Thanks
Do I have to use a midi controller in order to play my instruments inserts. cause none of them are playing sound??????? unless I need to buy keyboard inserts.
Jason, for some reason when I try to record MIDI on my pro tools it doesn't record. I have the i/o set up, MIDI thru is checked, but nothing will come through. Any thoughts?
Just so you know, I'm not sure if this is an issue or not but I don't hear my instruments come through UNTIL I hit record-enabled...why is that? (Pro tools 12)
love the vid. my current problem is when i do this. it plays the first note very loudly then all the rest of the recorded notes play very silently. can someone tell me whats wrong? i have protools on windows
+EvilleMonkey I've made a few attempts at getting this together. Part 6 is BIG - all on audio editing. I'm not yet happy with the way I've explained it, and it's difficult to do in about 20 minutes. Still trying! Will get it out soon.
+jasondewilde You are awsome, thank you, waiting part 6, still with this 5 parts I feel I am ready to go, just switched to protools, I got PT12 though, hope is not that different.

good flows great info please keep them coming also love how you explain how protools can not work sometimes and how to get around them.

I don't normally comment, but this is so far the best tutorial on midi

+RRvdK Cheers for the comment. Much appreciated. Hartilige bedankt!!
+jasondewilde You have a dutch name, but your dutch is pretty poor, the second word is good but the first you should look it up in the dictionary!

I've learnt more from you, Jason, in the few minutes I've been watching your videos than I have in months of having my head buried in manuals. Thank you.
Steve Laney. Hey Steve. That's an awesome thing to say and I really appreciate it. Part 6 coming soon.
jasondewilde Great! And don't worry about your keyboard skills, Coldplay would release that :-)
Steve Laney Haha haa. They are more than welcome to it...for points of course :-)

my choice of instruments in pro tools first is: Xpand, and thats it. not sure where you got that much bigger selection from.
Wow thank you for this I just got a midi keyboard for christmas and am going to school for recording. In my Midi class this past semester we didn't cover Midi in protools unfortunately , it was all in Reaktor and Logic so this is very helpful! :)

Thanks Man, You are a very good tutor. Everything sticks so easily. keep up the good work.

some of us are on windows so there should be that link so we all enjoy Protools✌
thanks a lot for this! is that possible to have a drum rack linked to our pad controler and asign drum samples on pads instead of using boom?
This helped me a lot! Thabks
to me the Instrument Db-33 doesn't appear. Why ?
It should also be noted that the Midi Merge will be greyed out on the transport window should you have loop recording enabled. :)
These are terrific videos, but there don't seem to be any more videos past this one, Part 5.

Great videos for beginners...I'm one! I am having a problem however with the midi instruments...I can only see the "factory default" option. When I click on the drop down, there is no menu...I just got pro tools 12 and I slould have all kinds of presets, etc. Any suggestions?
