I'm just pointing out that we're aware of the film's shortcomings, but we are also proud of it. We who made this film live in Sweden, where we are constantly told that our work is childish and no good. Instead, we hope to find people in the rest of the world that will eventually give us a shot at making real movies. Until then, we'll keep doing the best we can AND enjoying ourselves :)

The faithfulness of the film to the original story raises it beyond any technical limitations. In my opinion, the use of stop-motion gives it an even eerier dream-like quality. This remains one of the best fan-made Lovecraft films I've seen.
The animation is awesome, the treatment given to the film fantastic. The stop motion is perfect. The score for the film is excellent, it keeps the fast yet smooth pace. And i dont know how u got Count Dooku from starwars to narrate, but good job. Amazing film. Please make more. And it has stood the test of time so far since the 8 + years since u posted this.
Pay no attention to those vile voices, we love your work, as other people have pointed out the faithfulness to the story is what makes it shine, the stop-motion also makes it more spooky. Much love from Mexico.

At first I thought it was crappily made but the more I watched the more I realized this captures lovecraft perfectly. No amount of CGI could ever capture the strange movement and images given in Lovecrafts story. Only stop motion can do that. the stop motion gives the creatures this otherworldly movement and the cheap backgrounds give the whole video this dreamlike quality. Also I love the soundtrack.

@@hypnodance have you tried cgi? And ive seen cgi in the thing remake, compared to the first film, there are advantages to stop motion.
@@hypnodance Both are good if you know how to use them, stop-motion gives an unrealistic and sometimes dreamy style while CGI is supposed to look solid and realistic.

This is one of the most fantastic depictions of the madness and the feeling of depersonalized unreality that HP Lovecraft suffered from, for whatever reason.

He was raised by a psychotic, paranoid mother who sheltered him from everyone and everything.
Yeah what the other guy said, plus Lovecraft pretty much spent most of his life being miserable as well as struggling both financially and emotionally. He died destitute, assuming he'd be forgotten by all, but such is the fate of many artists, especially writers.
I'm afraid I have to disagree with the views of Lovecraft given in the comments. He certainly had his fits of depression, yes; but if one reads both his own letters and the accounts of those who knew him -- and he had one hell of a lot of friends, scattered all over the U.S. and abroad -- the idea that he was "miserable" or suffered any "feeling of depersonalized unreality" simply doesn't hold water. There is more of warmth and humor in his non-fantastic writings than of gloom, despair, depersonalization, anxiety, etc.; he made it known that, if he found the oppressive side of life more than what gave him pleasure and even joy, then he had absolutely no intention of bothering with it... and concluded that, so far (and this was fairly far along in his life) what he DID find of the latter was quite an amazing lot. He enjoyed meeting and talking with (as well as carrying on a tremendous correspondence with) friends; he thoroughly enjoyed his jaunts all over the eastern seaboard from Quebec to St. Augustine, Florida; he took great pleasure in the arts and sciences; went to and enjoyed lectures;... even talked about how much pleasure he got from such things as a bus ride in the south where people struck up a spontaneous sing-along... which he apparently joined in on (and regretted that New Englanders lacked the spontaneity for such things)...
No, Lovecraft was not the romanticized figure of myth we have seen so often depicted; he was a rich, complex, extremely intelligent and *engaged* human being who made friends practically wherever he went (see, for instance, E. Hoffmann Price's account of how HPL became the life of the party while visiting Price in New Orleans, as well as various accounts by Edith Miniter and other amateur journalists on how Lovecraft enjoyed the sort of clowning around that took place at the a.j. gatherings... and how he enjoyed riding rollercoasters and the like when visiting an amusement park). Even those who were prepared to dislike him, found themselves charmed by him and quickly becoming lifelong friends from that point on... and these were people of all classes, to boot. He even noted at one point that, much as he felt an affinity for the weird, he preferred beauty and would choose to write about such, save that he felt everything he had to say on the subject had been said better by others, leaving him as his especial literary province that of weirdness and terror.
What we have with Lovecraft is a man who had a tremendous imagination, a poetic sensibility developed to a highly unusual degree, and the ability to express certain moods in a very unique and impressive fashion which resonates with an increasingly wide audience from his day to ours (and, I would venture to say, will continue to do so for many, many years to come). But we mustn't mistake the artistic stance for the actual person. In many ways, Lovecraft was healthier and more balanced than the bulk of people, neither a true pessimist nor a true optimist, but a keen observer of life and the universe, a "cosmic indifferentist" philosophically, but one who, for all his reserve, had tremendously warm sympathies and a kindliness which would be quite amazing to those who view him via any of the narrow lenses through which they try to view him. One might keep in mind the title a friend of his (Wilfred B. Talman) gave to a piece he published in 1973: "The Normal Lovecraft: A Memoir to Restore Balance to the Shade of a Man of Delightful Character". That is MUCH closer -- and, frankly, more respectful -- to the truth concerning this genuine master of macabre *fiction* than any of the all-too-frequent distorted views which have been bruited about for the past 90+ years by people who neither knew him, nor took the time to look at the staggering amount of material concerning him and his life which has been available for a very long time... even longer than these common views, given that some of the comments mentioned above date as far back as the 1910s, when he was at his prickliest.....
(For those who wish to know a bit more about the ACTUAL Lovecraft, I highly recommend the book, "Ave atque Vale: Reminiscences of H. P. Lovecraft", edited by S. T. Joshi and David E. Schultz, published by Necronomicon Press in 2018, and which brings together close to 500 pp. of comment gathered from a wide range of sources.)
@@ishtarian There was a long period in the 10's and 20's where he had no friends at all, he only started to make his large network of friends once he came out of his depression.
This just goes to show you don’t need a big budget, CGI or big Hollywood backing to make a compelling visual story.
I hope you guys make more of these and I hope more directors like you get backing to create full blown adaptions.

The Great Race Of Yith is definitely my favorite alien species in the Mythos, they are easily the least hostile almost bordering on benevolent creatures and seem like they would great make conversationalists (I haven’t actually read The Shadow Out Of Time but from what I’ve heard the Yithians didn’t mistreat the main character in his time as one of them nor did the Yithian in control of his body use it to take over or doom humanity so they are definitely not a threat to us)
The Yithians aren't hostile towards anybody, except for the flying polyps. The mind-napped academic is not mistreated in any way, in fact he has the opportunity to read the library of the Great Race before being returned to his body. But the experience is traumatic to him (as can be well understood) and the Yith aren't interested in how their subjects feel and react. They're another example of cool alien intellects that differ vastly from us.

How can you possibly read them as benevolent or even neutral? They are an aggressive invader species that tried to conquer Earth from species that had already settled there. They commit utter genocide whenever they transfer themselves into the future or past. Their coming migration into the colopterans post-dating the extinction of humanity left the mind of the colopterans to be slaughtered by the re-emergent polyps. They literally commit mind rape and murder of entire civilizations. It is even mentioned that they wage something akin to time wars against future human realms. They force the minds captured in the past to give them information about everything they want to know. They took possession of the body without consent and ruined his life without letting him remember why. Only by enormous work and luck did he manage to find out the truth, and it's very clear he wishes he did not. Did you even read the story? The Yith are the most terrifying monsters Lovecraft ever conjured up.
"After twenty-two years of nightmare and terror, saved only by a desperate conviction of the mythical source of certain impressions, I am unwilling to vouch for the truth of that which I think I found in Western Australia on the night of July 17-18, 1935. There is reason to hope that my experience was wholly or partly an hallucination-for which, indeed, abundant causes existed. And yet, its realism was so hideous that I sometimes find hope impossible. If the thing did happen, then man must be prepared to accept notions of the cosmos, and of his own place in the seething vortex of time, whose merest mention is paralysing."
In fairness they kidnapped the poor guy. Effectively stole several years of his life and wiped his mind before sending him back.
Seriously though, make a lot of these and then put it on a DVD, I'll buy it.

Bill H I'd upgrade to at least a shotgun, if not a Kalashnikov. But be careful not to over-arm, or you could not only slow yourself down, but potentially damage your find with excessive firepower. (Needless to say, flamethrowers and grenades are right out.)

Against the old ones returning the best usage of ammo is to save it for self destruction so you can avoid being consumed for all eternity in the dark lair of some nameless, faceless entity.

The, how do I put it in a way that isn't meant to insult, inexpensively produced background video fit the character and the style of Lovecraft's fiction. I don't know why for sure, but it does. I think since his stories are set in the early 20th century (and the distant past and far future), a style that is reminiscent of the silent movie era just seems right. The monster designs were really cool as well, and the animation reminded me of stop-motion, which again, fits with the style and tone. This is a really excellent adapation.

Coming back to this is a real treat. I watched this sometime in the early 2010's when I was still in middle school. If memory serves me rightly, I was searching for and watching claymation horror videos, discovering how much the animation style unnerves me in the process, and stumbled upon this one on my youtube home page. Since then I've always had flashes of memory of various scenes from this short film in the unexplored corners of my mind. Only in the past several years have I really started to greatly expand my knowledge of and gain a love for cosmic horror, to the point that it has easily become my favorite genre of fiction. But to watch this again with the interests I have now has added to my mounting, and rather gleeful, realization - that my exposure to the genre and my fascination with it has always been there, even in the earliest parts of my life. I just didn't have the insight to know what exactly it was that was holding my interest. Now I've basically been exposed to the eldritch truth, haha.
Thank you for making these animations. They, I believe, helped slowly steer me in my early days towards what is now perhaps one of my greatest passions.
Well, I'm really happy I've stuck with you this long :) When I first encountered cosmic horror in the writings of H P Lovecraft it was like a breath of fresh air, and I quickly realized the impact it had had on modern writers, like Stephen King, for example.

Considering that the Yithians have solved the "Enigma of Time", one has to wonder if they have ever encountered the Hounds of Tindalos.
They're probably at least aware of them.
In the book the Yithians almost never travel to past and they don't use angles nor euclidean geometry in their constructions. Wonder why
They sorta look like Daleks, so maybe they’ve encountered a certain doctor who has also solved the Enigma of Time.

It's equally as terrifying even though I only meant it as a joke.
It is a brilliant thought. The only thing more horrifying than losing your mind is being aware of its passing. In such a circumstance, I, too, would desperately cling to any shred of hope that my madness was reflections of reality, just like the narrator. If you can't trust your own mind, what is left to trust?
The major flaw with that perspective is that he returns from his "madness," whereas, sadly, Alzheimer's patients only have moments of lucidity. However, there are parallels such as the exploration phase in the story. Many patients go through an agitated phase similar to this early in the disease (often before diagnosis), where they are driven to search for something and can't explain what.
Alzheimer is an elder god so overwhelming that knowledge of him/it tears gaping holes in the human mind...
Glad you enjoyed this! Though it's only an amateur film, we did put a lot of effort into it. Actually, I'm planning to do "Under the Pyramids", but I'm still looking for a guy who can pull off a good Harry Houdini. It's that hairstyle I'm worried about!

I’ve been watching this video every few months for the last 3 years hoping we’d get some kind of show or movie that matches this type of quality there’s something about the low budget that just feels right but not too cheap
Glad you enjoy what we've done with this story :) My aim is to show that you can actually create visually interesting films without having to crowdfund the shit out of them. I think it's better to be productive, be bold and be inventive, than supposing that you must rely on a good budget to get somewhere with your project.

You totally make the story come to life. They should put this on Adult swim!!!! If they play stupid shit like the heart she hollers, or those stupid tim and eric bed time stories, or the dumb ass loiter squad, or Mr. Pickle to waste 15 minutes, they should definitely air this masterpiece to reward the faithful Adult Swim viewers (like me) who actually want to be entertained! Maybe it would bring some exposure to HPL's stories. Maybe you could convince them to give you a budget and you could do Dunwich, Shadow over Innsmouth, Call of Cthulhu--you could do a whole series of HPL classics!!!??????????

I've been binging your videos lately. And I have to say this one is a masterpiece. You managed to capture the essence of the story perfectly. I actually went and read the story because I loved this video so much. And now years later I still come back.

This has always been one of my favorite Lovecraft stories. Excellent adaptation! Very faithful and respectful of the source. Would love to see this filmmaker given a larger budget to work on this.

Fantastic narration, terrific acting, a blend of Mélièsque art with Weird Tales-like props, and a truly Lovecraftian atmosphere. Dammit, I know it's just a short subject with budgetary constraints, but I fell in love.
Many thanks! :D It's funny you should mention Méliès -he continues to be an inspiration for me. We couldn't spend any real money on this, but we went for what atmosphere we could muster, and I'm glad it seems to work.
You should definitely do more HPL stuff - he's notoriously hard to translate into film media, but it seems indie producers now how to (just check out HPLS's Call of Chtulhu and Whisperer in Darkness). Also, HPL's works are mostly short stories, which work best I think with short subjects. I'd like to see the more abstract ones, though - like Memory -, and ones that aren't usually adapted - Nyarlathotep? The Evil Clergyman? Eryx? maybe Dagon, or The Tomb. Keep up with the good stuff!
I am actually working on Dagon. I'd love to do In the Walls of Eryx, but I haven't worked out a bunch of practical problems for that one yet.

This was pure brilliance, and nothing less. Many have been the makers of films that have tried to capture a true "Lovecraftian ambiance." Each have failed in kind. Where I believe the celluloid storytellers have failed, this work has succeeded with an excellence never before thought of for a Lovecraft tale. To maintain the first-person perspective throughout; with the faithful narration within, was the missing cornerstone of an H.P. Lovecraft visual recreation. To faithfully maintain the story verbatim, but also include a silent animation, only enhances the tale. The movies made thus far of his stories; incorporate the directors vision , which amounts to an "interpretation" at best. Keeping the film silent and faithfully adhering to the story in this way, gives the film an almost "documentary" type of feel, that has never been done before with a Lovecraft story before. To remove all dialog from the actors, and have them merely act out what is being read, is the only way to re-create an H.P. Lovecraft story. All of which are told in the first person, with very little exception. It then serves as both audio-book AND film. The way this was done was nothing less than creative genius at work. And were H.P. alive today, he would be most pleased. Well done indeed! Bravo!

Thank you! Using the voice-over approach allowed us to move through the story at a quick pace. I'm afraid many amateur productions loose a bit of credibility as soon as the actors open their mouths. We decided to not change any of the exposition into dialogue which would only make matters worse.
Still one of the coolest depictions of Lovecraft's work, in an engaging and digestible form!

I am really liking these videos - they are true "amateur" productions - meaning they were made because the producer geniunely enjoys the process and the craft of making them. I find myself inspired by these Lovecraft productions, and now I have to try to make my own tribute to Lovecraft somehow.

Well, it's a very absurd story, but I hope there are some simple chills in there too :)
These movies really help me understand the stories better. Lovecraft's stories blend in with one another and it's hard to tell what Eldritch horror goes with what story. The other part of it is that Lovecraft will sum up something in one sentence that is worthy of a couple pages of description so this video does a nice job of expanding on those sentences as well.

Thanks! That's a very flattering comparison. We decided to go with the silent movie look, except for the time travel scenes, which we wanted to be kind of hyper real and very colorful.
At first, I wasn't very convinced on the general aesthetics of this film, but by the end it grew on me. Although this film might've had it's shortcomings, I really think this adaptation was GREAT!! Thank you all for creating no matter what anyone else says, thank you for inspiring me and everyone else that saw this!
This film was made for next to nothing, and by two people with quite different visual languages. I guess it's a miracle something coherent came out of this at all :)

This is great! It captures the lovecraft vibe most than a lot of other shorts or movies.
The low production value add just more charm to it and helps you get into the story. The animation are great.

Really loved it, stop motion added a lot and made the film seem like a classic horror movie from the 1920-30s. My only gripe is that the twist at the end of the novella was left out, other than that it was amazing

That was incredible! The puppets, the primordial city backdrops, just everything evocative of that story. And the actor did a sterling job; looks like he had a hoot!

perhaps plan A of the Yith was to create a continent of deadly creatures to fight their enemy. :)

This is closer than many adaptations that use high tech cinematography to achieve their point, personally i found this really quite good & the narrative superb. A fine job of one of the Masters great works. Great job & a blast to watch , but then again i love old stuff & this has that simple yet effective feel.

This story is among perhaps my top five of Lovecraft's work. I quite enjoyed this little vignette. One doesn't need a huge budget to make an entertaining work.

That's what attracted me to this particular story; the chance to show interpretations of Lovecraft's fictional lost worlds.
I watch this a lot, it's magnificent. I know these long films must take SO much effort but if you ever took a shot at Shadow Over Innsmouth, maybe serialised, I think it would be incredible.
I would really like to do my own version of The Shadow Over Innsmouth. There are some logistic problems concerning the filming of it that I have to take care of first.
