  • Critical Path Method | Real Difference between Critical path vs Longest path in P6 | By Krishna Chiddarwar
In this video, I want to discuss the critical path vs the longest path.
The most popular definition of the critical path is a total float less than or equal to 0.
But PMBOK which is project management's knowledge of book defines critical path as the sequence of activities that represents the longest path through a project which determines the shortest possible project duration.
That's not exactly how Primavera calculates the critical part to show you what I mean let's switch back to p6.
Primavera defines a critical path in two ways 1st is using total float. it defines critical activities as the one with total float less than or equal to 0.
The other way P6 defines the critical path is using the longest path.
The critical path and longest path would ideally be the same if we don't have any actuals in the schedule if we don't have any project deadline set in the schedule or if we don't have any constraints in the schedule because once you have those things in your schedule it alters the total float off your schedule and then it alters the way P6 determines which activities should be considered as critical for your schedule depending on this total flow definition.
Several construction scheduling experts told me it's the longest path in your schedule which is the actual critical path.
A correct longest path in your schedule is a continuous one showing the activities which are contributing toward project completion.
To get the correct longest path please follow the steps in the video.
Let me know in the comments if this video has been of use to you or if you knew of this technique or if you have any suggestions to better it.

Trying to get a Real Critical path for a complex schedule is tricky and it took me time to realize that the critical path I was referring to for my project was not the correct one. Hope this video will be of use to you.

Well explained and got your idea of longest path considered as critical path and also not based on float equals to zero.

thanks.. that's helpful but want to ask that sometimes management asks to provide 10 critical path's based on project finish date, is it possible with the above method?

Hi Mohsin. To answer your questions, it is possible to create 10 critical paths [float path], you'll just have to type 10 under the advanced tab [specify the number of paths to calculate]. However, to clear any confusion, only the activities in the float path1 are most important / Critical. Activities under other float paths should be considered as near-critical. Hope that answers your question. Let me know if it doesn't. I am planning of making a video related to your question, please check that out next week.

I did the same thing but somehow there are activities that are completed but still showing in the path. It's weird but it's my first time to see this.

How is the critical path simultaneously the longest and shortest at the same time?

    • @krishnachiddarwar505
      @krishnachiddarwar505  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

When you look within the project, It’s critical path is LONGEST PATH among the other paths from start to end.
When you look at the project from outside, critical paths duration is the MINIMUM required time to complete the project. Hence, the SHORTEST duration for projects completion. Hope this helps!

@@krishnachiddarwar505 Hi, I didn't understand his question and your answer. Could you please explain elaborately?

@@shahjalal2946 In a project there are multiple paths. Some paths start at Start date and terminate midway. Some paths start mid way and terminate on Project finish date. Some Paths begin and terminate some where in between Project Start and finish date. Only Longest path will begin at start date and terminate on finish date. This path will always be longer than any other path within the project. Thus this is the longest path within the Project. Now if we talk about total time to complete the project then critical path time is shortest possible time, because any delay in any activity will either increase the total time to complete the project(if this activity falls in critical path) or the total project time will stay unchanged(if the delayed activity does not fall in critical path). So any delay in activity will either increase the total time for project or it will remain unchanged. Thus critical path time is the shortest possible time to complete the project if we factor in delays at activity level.
