Hi Matt- Looks like you haven't been here for a while, and I know this vid is now on the 'old' side, but I just wanted to say thank you! I bought an S88 mk2 a week ago, and I learned a lot from you. I spent a good deal of time studying your vid and it definitely pointed me in the right direction. I'm happy to report (and I'm pretty sure most everybody already knows this, but for what it's worth...) to all mk2 owners that the functionality and set up works as described in this video, albeit one caveat; the "Control Editor" software is non-functional, and the procedure described at the end of this video can be done in the "Komplete Kontrol" software- keyboard splits, channel assignments, relabeling of knobs and buttons, all of it. So I don't know if you'll see this Matt, but none the less thank you!! :)
Komplete kontrol Mk1/Mk2 best tutorial for Live sets: most of my set list are multiple layers of sound w/full effects @one midi channel & another layer and split @next midi channel at certain song on a different template.. my question is, can we toggle the templates with a foot switch pedal ? As for now I’m using the cursor button up/down for this purpose.. I agreed, by far this is the best controller out there for Live or Studio environment. I’m selling all my hardware synth, picked up KK + komplete 12 package deal and other Softsynth and possibilities are endless... Matt, thank you so much for your inside knowledge of these instruments, very helpful...
I don't understand how you access the next set of instruments simply by using the preset down/up buttons to change templates (you're doing at 3:12). I've got 4 instruments that are all record-enabled, and I have 2 templates (each template having 2 key zones)in the controller editor. Each instrument has its own midi channel (1, 2, 3, 4), and the key zones are using these channels (template 1: first key zone set to channel 1, second key zone set to channel 2 etc.). For example, if I were to press C2 on the first template, instrument 1 and 3 plays that key instead of just instrument 1. How do I set it so only Instrument 1 plays in this case, and then when I switch to the other template Instrument 3 plays it instead? Not sure if I'm stupid or just missing something, and this was the best possible way I could explain the problem. By the way my DAW is Logic Pro X, and yes the keyboard is setup properly to it.
+Niruth You have got to make sure that you set up the zones in the Controller Editor to be on the correct corresponding MIDI channels. If you setup the Ableton tracks on different MIDI channels, thats only half the battle. Go into the CE and click on the colored zone and go to the Assign tab to select the corresponding MIDI channel.
+Matt Cellitti Alright thanks a bunch! After doing that, and then enabling an option called "Auto demix by channel if multitrack recording" in Logic X recording project settings, I managed to get it working. Great tutorial! You've got yourself a new subscriber :)
+Jack Spade Push is awesome if you will be using Ableton heavily. I have a Push, but I find the Komplete Kontrol more useful for me because I do 90% of my production in Maschine standalone. So for me, the added functionality of the KKS really makes Maschine even better. Push is great because it is connected to a DAW - so until Maschine offers some more DAW-like features, there are things that Push will do better.
Don't get me wrong I love Maschine stand alone and you've probably heard people talk about the limitations with arranging. If NI did an overhaul of the song mode I may use Maschine exclusively. But Ableton's workflow is so dope with just a midi controller and mouse I can't imagine how happy the Push would make me. However the Komplete Kontrol is so damn good looking lol, best designed keyboard I ever seen and I hear the keybed is like butter. I'd be happy with either, and I'll probably eventually have both anyway, but for now leaning towards the push.
+Jack Spade well the other thing to consider is that the Push is only really tightly integrated with Live's internal instrument library. So you have to do a lot of work with your user library to access and control outside VSTs. That is where Komplete and KKS is really winning. I even bought a product from Audio Modder to convert Komplete and Maschine libraries so they could be integrated with Push and it was really clunky in my opinion.
Hmmm I was going to do the audio modded thing too. I thought that would solve that issue. You're making me nervous lol. Idk still on the fence but I'll make my decision by Friday. Thanks Matt!
Ha- sorry about that, and I'm definitely not trying to recommend NI stuff over others. Its just that I was hoping audio modder could make Push my "super Maschine" so I wouldn't have to be so reliant on Maschine. It actually did the opposite and made me appreciate Maschine even more despite its Arranger flaws lol.
This is a great setup. I am just starting to play keys live and need to setup this type of thing. I would love your help on setting this up for me. I dont quite understand setting up channels yet.
I do feel like they got something very backwards with this workflow. The SOFTWARE should be setting up the regions and lights, not the hardware. Currently, if I'm in the middle of a show and switching songs, I need to change my setup on my DAW/Host AND select the corresponding midi region setting "pages" on the board. This seems incredibly redundant, time confusing, and cumbersome if you're playing gigs with dozens of complex setups (as I regularly do). That's why I just use mainstage. I may not have the lights (which would be very handy, I thought of trying to build an Arduino-powered thing like this years ago), but I don't have to do any menu surfing on my board, just switch patches on Mainstage and everything is setup with splits and new VIs. I even wrote a MIDI router in Max/MSP to create multiple setups within a single MainStage patch, by simply changing the incoming midi channel. Not to be arrogant, but my setup is light years ahead of this workflow in its convenience and simplicity for live performance. But those lights are a great idea... I just wish I could merge it with my workflow.
+Eric Barker If what you say about playing gigs and having complex setups is true then you're really only going against what you're preaching. I, myself, play live at my church and I also have complex setups to my station with various equipment and instruments. For big, and long services, that I have prior knowledge of, I would pre-make (or "preset") my equipment in the way I would use it for the service and "practice" what it is that I'm going to be doing for that service. You can't just "wing it" at a gig. You can add little improvisations here and there, but you can't tell me that you go to a gig, with a complex setup, and wing the entire thing, especially if you're expecting some sort of fee or compensation for your work. A professional who has done many live performances would know that they need to have a sturdy foundation work to their performance. Then they can add their little improvisations wherever and whenever they want. With that said, you should already have an idea of what it is you want to do, how you want to lay it out and then customize your DAW/Host program to do what you want. The keyboard is not setting up any regions or lights. They are set up in the "SOFTWARE" as you so pointed out in your comment. The person who has made the video literally shows that you setup the regions and lights WITHIN the software controller editor. That's something you take time out before a performance and setup the way you want it to be so that it's easier for your gig, workflow and leaves less time using a mouse (or your finger on the trackpad) to go and point and click to an effect/action on your DAW/Host. Using a mouse (or your finger) wastes time on what effects/actions you want to initiate at a specific moment; it also cuts into your performance. The controller editor helps to map and layout your effects, plugins, sounds, instruments in such a way that you can quite literally control what you want straight from the small area of interest that's on the keyboard (instead of having to reach all the way over to your laptop to activate/trigger/etc whatever it is that you need to do. Now, if you need to make a quick change in sounds/instruments for a nice little twist then just utilize the ARP Hold feature to hold a sound or sequence to keep the audience at bay until you can make your "quick" changes. It's very simple and just needs a bit of playing around to understand and get a handle of.
+CrossSpirited21 not sure where you got that I was winging it. I spend dozens of hours setting up and practicing my with my setup. I just try to make it as seamless as possible so that I can spend the most time playing keys and not buttons. You sure you're replying to the right poster?
Great video! Very informative! I am totally sold on getting an S49!! I just need to find a way to store it...The S25 would get normal production stuff done, but the 49 or 61 is the way to go for performance.
running into a problem. everytime i change templates while holding a note, that note (having not recieved "note off") continues playing until i stop the clock inside ableton.
Great, but what if you want to use a sustain pedal? I set similar stuff with my s88mk2 but sustain works on only one midi channel! So if you have track 1 on 1 midi channel, second on 2 midi ch, etc. the sustain pedal will work on the first channel only! It makes this controller unusable to me. Or usable until you will not use the pedal. Anybody knows any solution?
Hey, very nice vid! But I cannot find any tutorial about Komplete Kontrol and Kontakt 5 (16 out) multiple instruments together, in Ableton Live 9. I'm wondering if you have a tutorial like this? Thanks
Sure Dave. I have the Ableton Delay and the NI RC24 Reverb on two different return tracks. To utilize them I am simply turning the send knob of the track I want to apply the effect. The knobs are midi mapped to a MIDI CC designated by each KK template.
I tried to setup key splits in Editor but I do not know how to transfer them to the keyboard. Shift + Instance combination does not do anything. I've spent 3 hours so far trying to figure this out - no luck.
thanks Matt this was a revelation - blew my mind - didn't think I would ever want to use a Kontrol keyboard this way until I realised it changed the way you could use Session View - and made the Push 2 less relevant. I had been trying to figure out how to actually play keyboard parts while other clips were running. But 3 years on the Kontrol Editor has been replaced by an app much more integrated with Komplete Kontrol - would you consider doing a new video to explain how to do the same thing with that software because I was having trouble translating across to the new software. Thanks!
This is a cool workflow but I wish you weren’t limited by the 16 midi channel limit. If you had one program per song that’d only be 16 songs, which wouldn’t quite work for the gigs I’m wanting to use it for
hey i have a good idea try orchestra? w the keyboard. and maybe it will be good make a reciew tutorial and show me and ill do it im produce allot of music.
is it possible to play the chord set, arpeggiator and record in maschine with kontrol s? I made a manual set up to play the chord set over kontrol with a seperate midi contr.keyboard but it´s not possible to record in maschine
Hi there, Is possible to map note for example C8 to act like a button ? On/Off state with LED response ? So I can turn on or turn of effect, plugin, instrument, ... in my DAW (Ableton) and have visual feedback ? Thank you for response
Hi Matt on your tutorial , you say you're running midi mode but yet Arpeggio and all functions are working as soon as i connect to Edit Controller everything switches off and i can't run Arpeggio etc what am i doing wrong ? is it My midi settings in Ableton ?
+Allister Whyte NZ Can do nearly the same with Logic. Live is obviously configured to be more performance oriented but this can all be done in Logic too.
Hi Matt! After 8 month, finally, the new upgrade of Komplete Kontrol let us do it with MK2 keyboards... (yeah they manage to do it before they anounce a MK3 lol)... Is it possible for you to make a tutorial like this for MK2 keyboard now?
Hi Matt! Thanks for all those nice tutorials on the Komplete Kontrol, it helped me a lot to understand and use my new S88. I have a question, on the video, you mapped the controler to be able to launch scene in live, can you explain how you did it? I am searching for some hours to figure it out, without success. HAve a nice day!
Hi Eric, you have to go into MIDI Map mode in Ableton (command+m) and click on the blue box highlighting a particular Scene. When selected, simply press the key you want to be the launch trigger. Thanks for watching!
+Dafty Punk all the instruments are loaded in the DAW and are record enabled. The template loads fast because it is nothing more than MIDI ccs and note values. It's not like the templates are doing any loading of instruments that would cause a delay
Hi Matt! I was thinking about buying the new s61 mk2, but with some hesitation. Now that I've seen that... I definitively buy mine! I don't know exactly how you did that because I'm a total nb in that controller world, but the important thing is that it is possible to do! I've read that in komplete kontrol you can't layer instrument or apply effect, that u have to play one instrument at a time. But here I understood well, using the controller as midi instrument in ableton you can override that problem. Is it correct? You showed here how to prep for life action, but If I want to record such improvisation, can I with softwares you showed here? Sorry if my question are a little bit obvious, I'm totally new at this! I play piano, acoustic one... I never tried such equipment. But I got a great feeling about the experience! Thanks a lot for those videos!
Ok I'm still battling here. you say you're running in Midi Mode but you have all functions (Arp Scale ) lit and functioning . When i run in Midi Mode Nada
+Marc Bentel Its because in MIDI mode the key zone is triggering a MIDI track in Ableton that has an instance of Komplete Kontrol loaded on it, hence giving you access to those modes.
+Matt Cellitti Ok thanks , Sorry I must be doing something wrong and have checked knowledge base and there wasn't much data on it ...just to double check: are you using Komplete as a normal "plug in " or as the special Ableton scripted one , and in 'midi setup' in Ableton currently I have KK midi port as well as daws activated is that ok ?
+Marc Bentel mmm...I think I had loaded it as the "Komplete Kontrol.adg" as was provided by NI. Keep playing around with it and I'm sure you will get it
I don'tbecause you currently do not have this level of functionality for the MK2. MK1 specifically was controlled by the Control Editor app which allowed for the splitting of the keybed into different MIDI zones. MK2 MIDI control is located in the KK app itself and is missing these features...
Matt Cellitti 😳Maybe I jumped the gun on selling my S61 & S25? They helped pay for my Maschine MK2. Should I get a used MK1 controller as I am now trying to integrate Ableton Suite 9 with my Komplete 11?
Yeah, I've mentioned my frustration with this to the development team for Komplete Kontrol. Actually just sent an email to them asking about this so we will see what the response is
The announcement video from a few months back shows the girl firing off stuff in Ableton, selecting clips, etc. what can’t she do? th-cam.com/video/-ECBgxAowig/w-d-xo.html
Hi! I have a problem: when I setup something with Controller Editor and once I close it, it doesn't keep my new config. How do you keep your changes activated while closing Controller Editor ?
+wipeout hardcore it saves automatically. Just make sure the keyboard is selecting the correct template. It might be defaulting to a different template other than the one you just worked on
+wipeout hardcore you can move the order of the templates by dragging their names around in controller editor. Move the desired template to first in line or simply arrow down on the KK while in MIDI mode
Great stuff. But does this approach mean that you are limited to 16 sounds (one per each MIDI channel) to make your live set? I'd probably need a lot more than that for a set list containing 15-20 songs
Thanks for your prompt reply Matt! I'm just starting to use Live again (after quitting trying a couple of time during the last 15 years!) and I'm not sure if there's anything like a command that you can assign to make groups of tracks rec enabled. That way you could re-use the MIDI channel numbers without having to launch different projects between songs...
Hi Matt I've become quite good at this and getting quite familiar however i have one question: I have 2 templates set up in the Controller the first template has numerous sounds loop etc the second just a piano the problem mim encountering is when i move between the templates the controller values return to default i.e.. i am using the cut off on bass synth at at value of 65% and i switch template to piano and then when i return to Template one with Synth bass the Cut off knob on KK has gone to default so if i touch it it jumps abruptly from the original position I had (65%) to default this makes transitions etc horrible , any ideas?
Yes that is a major issue with this workflow. I'm personally not aware of a way to fix it but I will look around to see if there is any hope that it could work properly.
+Matt Cellitti Cool thanks Matt , I've tried everything in the manual it makes reference to using 'take over mode- Value scaling ' in ' Midi preferences ' the description seems to fit how we're using it but it makes no difference could it be a bug in Ableton ? It just seems weird
+Marc Bentel more likely an issue in the Control Editor that it is unable to recognize the previous position. Not really a bug, might not be fixable without some custom Ableton remote script
I saw that but the Lightguide template editor doesn't existe there... only in Controller Editor. I asked NI about that, they told me "MK2 keyboard should be implemented in Controller Editor by the end of the year" ... WTF????? they are kidding me! hahahaha
Only discovered this now, starting out with my s61 mk2; amazing information contained herein, thank you so much!
This just blew the door WIDE open for me. Thanks for this video!

How do these keyboards work with mainstage 3 since the update?
Hey man I can’t get my mk1 transpose buttons, like play and stop etc. to work with live. Any idea on how to get this to work?
Does this work with MainStage?
omg you're the boss of the koomplete kontrol !!
Very good tutorial! Nicely explained! Thanks for the info, Matt!
thank you matt for your amazing videos.

brutal. thanks matt
i was hoping to use the s88 to control keyscape and omnisphere in this way. essentially create my own workstation, but there are too many midi quirks

Hi Matt,
is it true that the usb does not work at the same time as the midi out in the S61 mk1?
Hey, very nice vid! But I cannot find any tutorial about Komplete Kontrol and Kontakt 5 (16 out) multiple instruments together,
in Ableton Live 9.
I'm wondering if you have a tutorial like this? Thanks
Huge! Thanks Matt
Hi Matt, could explain how you've customized the Send to EFX and what EFX you are using.
Thank's
Sure Dave. I have the Ableton Delay and the NI RC24 Reverb on two different return tracks. To utilize them I am simply turning the send knob of the track I want to apply the effect. The knobs are midi mapped to a MIDI CC designated by each KK template.

Can you do all this in Cubase 10 pro? I'm interested in the templates in particular.
thx...what software are you using for your project?...
Ableton is the daw, Komplete kontrol is the plug-in
hey i have a good idea try orchestra? w the keyboard. and maybe it will be good make a reciew tutorial and show me and ill do it im produce allot of music.
is it possible to play the chord set, arpeggiator and record in maschine with kontrol s? I made a manual set up to play the chord set over kontrol with a seperate midi contr.keyboard but it´s not possible to record in maschine
Hi there,
Is possible to map note for example C8 to act like a button ? On/Off state with LED response ?
So I can turn on or turn of effect, plugin, instrument, ... in my DAW (Ableton) and have visual feedback ?
Thank you for response
Nope. Keys are for note values only
THNX a lot...! Very helpfull
Hi Matt on your tutorial , you say you're running midi mode but yet Arpeggio and all functions are working as soon as i connect to Edit Controller everything switches off and i can't run Arpeggio etc what am i doing wrong ? is it My midi settings in Ableton ?
Nice tutorial! Did you brake your keyboard at the touch strips?
Did you get the mk2 yet?
Can it do the same with Logic proX ? or is it more suited to Abelton, great video by the way, thankyou.
+Allister Whyte NZ Can do nearly the same with Logic. Live is obviously configured to be more performance oriented but this can all be done in Logic too.

Hi Eric, you have to go into MIDI Map mode in Ableton (command+m) and click on the blue box highlighting a particular Scene. When selected, simply press the key you want to be the launch trigger. Thanks for watching!
Thanks a lot Matt! This was the tiny little thing i was missing to really enjoy my controller! Continue your great work to help the community! :D
Does this Piano 88 work with Ableton 9?
how come theres no delay when you switch between templates?
+Dafty Punk all the instruments are loaded in the DAW and are record enabled. The template loads fast because it is nothing more than MIDI ccs and note values. It's not like the templates are doing any loading of instruments that would cause a delay
i did all those in my DAW already, but switching templates isnt as seamless as yours
Benoit Peeters yes the key to all this is using Ableton Live software with the KKS controller
Thank you very much:)
Keep playing around with it and I'm sure you will get it
+Matt Cellitti Sorry man i really got it very wrong, I'm all sorted now ;)
which midi keyboard version is that
The mk1 s61. They have the 49 on reverb new for $199
Do you have a current version of this for the MK2 version, or would you say it’s basically the same?
Actually just sent an email to them asking about this so we will see what the response is
For the time being should I find a used one ya think?
The announcement video from a few months back shows the girl firing off stuff in Ableton, selecting clips, etc. what can’t she do? th-cam.com/video/-ECBgxAowig/w-d-xo.html
Hi! I have a problem: when I setup something with Controller Editor and once I close it, it doesn't keep my new config. How do you keep your changes activated while closing Controller Editor ?
+wipeout hardcore it saves automatically. Just make sure the keyboard is selecting the correct template. It might be defaulting to a different template other than the one you just worked on
thank you! but how do you chose the default template then ?
+wipeout hardcore you can move the order of the templates by dragging their names around in controller editor. Move the desired template to first in line or simply arrow down on the KK while in MIDI mode
5:50 - 6:19 .... was hungry for that information !
Great stuff. But does this approach mean that you are limited to 16 sounds (one per each MIDI channel) to make your live set? I'd probably need a lot more than that for a set list containing 15-20 songs
Good point. You’d probably have to have different projects for several songs in a set
Yes, you can use a MIDI command or a Key command of your choice to toggle record enable on multiple tracks...good point
serie name of the keyboard? thanks
S series (S61, S49, etc)
Hi Matt I've become quite good at this and getting quite familiar however i have one question:
I have 2 templates set up in the Controller the first template has numerous sounds loop etc the second just a piano
the problem mim encountering is when i move between the templates the controller values return to default i.e.. i am using the cut off on bass synth at at value of 65% and i switch template to piano and then when i return to Template one with Synth bass the Cut off knob on KK has gone to default so if i touch it it jumps abruptly from the original position I had (65%) to default this makes transitions etc horrible , any ideas?
+Matt Cellitti yeah I have been sent one already that might work will keep you posted
Hi, have you worked it out? I am experiencing the same issue...
Matt, the control editor doesn’t works with Mk2 keyboards. Do you know where I can create the templates for MK2 ?
Thanks!
+Benoit Peeters correct. It is part of the KK software now. Open up Komplete Control in stand-alone and click on the midi tab top right of GUi
I saw that but the Lightguide template editor doesn't existe there... only in Controller Editor. I asked NI about that, they told me "MK2 keyboard should be implemented in Controller Editor by the end of the year" ... WTF????? they are kidding me! hahahaha
+Benoit Peeters I know I know. I think it was bogus too
I can make a song in KOMPLETE 11, right?
With the s49
Never Mind sorted Found how to run "Midi mode" :)
