In this video I share my tips for making a perfect custard square/mille-feuille/vanilla slice. It's a non-conventional recipe, but I find it works every time.
It's important to make sure you don't end up with lumpy custard, and I'll show how to avoid that. It's important to make your custard square look fancy, and I'll show that too. Today I'll demonstrate with coconut, feathered chocolate and passionfruit, but the options are endless.
As always, we'll cut and plate it ready to share... Unless it's all eaten before then!

This lady has a lovely demeanour 🌸
Thank you 😊
As an Aussie, I have absolutely NEVER heard it referred to it as 'snot block' 🙈
Ever been to the top end?
You are kidding me. I am 59 and most of my life that is all we have referred to them as. SNOT BLOCKS. I have never heard it called a custard square like this lady calls it. My 89 year old mother's uncle and cousins called them PUS SLICE, SNOT SLICE, and then in the 60's it started as a snot block. She is from the Mallee. Maybe that is where it orignally started.
@@MicheeeeeObiMrs wow really. never heard of the expression.
Kiwi, now in Oz. Retired 10 years. Ex Servo Manager and cook. Now working on making delicious things as a mentally stimulating pastime.. Keep up the good work.
I've just tried this tonight, the custard comes out beautifully smooth, no lumps. This is an awesome method, can't wait to eat it tomorrow. Thanks for sharing!
Yay, so happy to hear you have tried it and it was a success!! It is a great method isn't it!!
I've always wanted to make vanilla slices but did know how. Thanks so much for showing me how to make them. You are awesome Taryn.
You are so welcome! Enjoy making some of your own 😊
Love how u explain.. Beautiful and of course amazing recipes
Thanks for the feedback, have you given custard square a try?
Add a layer of strawberry jam on the bottom layer first before the custard.
That sound like an interesting addition...might have to try it sometime!
OMG 66yo and have never ever heard the Vanilla Slice called "SNOT BLOCKS" boy now I've heard everything lol, they say you learn something new everyday well today I certainly did, thank you for sharing.
Haha it's crazy isn't it!! I think I prefer custard square or vanilla slice 😉
@@EasyPeasyKitchen I have to totally agree with you, being Aussie born and breed makes me wonder what rock I've been living under all these years lol
Wow that surprised me because my 89 year old mother said it started when she was a young woman. Her cousins and uncle called the pus slice. Snot slice. and so on. So it has been around a LONG TIME. I am 59 and heard it all my life.
thanks taryn , looks great cheers from vancouver island
Thanks, I hope you make some to enjoy 😉
Thanks so much - I love your channel
So glad to hear you enjoy it! Thanks for your comment 😊
I love your video, this is what I like very details

Hi Taryn - another Kiwi cook here. I've been thinking of making custard squares again which I haven't done since my children were little. I do always make my custards, sauces and gravies in the microwave and have never had a problem with lumps. My go to custard recipe was given to me years ago by a very old country lady - but yours intrigues me and I will definitely try it. I've subscribed and look forward to exploring your channel.
Hi and welcome 😊. Custard square is so delicious isn't it!! Actually anything custard is well received in our house! Hope you enjoy trying this recipe!
Yes I have made vanilla slice often and the custard can be tricky, so can't wait to try your method. Melbourne, Australia.

I love vanilla slice, but the shop ones are not that great. I actually made my first batch of vanilla slice yesterday. They are Yum. Your videos are awesome, well spoken and easy to follow. Keep up the great work. Lots of thanks from Perth, Western Australia
Thanks for your comment, so happy to hear you like our videos ☺️. Enjoy your vanilla slice!!
Great video! Ha ha ha! Yes, off-cuts don't last very long, do they! My husband was quite put out that there were no off-cuts from the cake I made for our son's wedding, yesterday, after I tortured him all week with the smells of baking. Usually, when I carve a cake, there are plenty of off-cuts leftover, but I needed them to bulk up the lamb's tummy.
Oh dear, that is torture having those delicious smells and not getting any samples! Hope all went well for your son's wedding 😃
Very nice ma sha allahse good👍👍🙏🙏😋😋💯💯💯💯👌👌👌👌👌👌
Thank you so much 😊
Hi Taryn, It is really pretty! I had never heard of custard powder and had to look it up. Here in America we have instant pudding and Google recommends using that as a substitute. Also, we don't have corn flour here, but we do have corn starch. I'm amazed by the differences between our countries when it comes to ingredients. BTW, I missed you last week. I hoped you were well. Glad to see you back.
Hi Miriam, thanks for your comment. It is interesting what is available and not available in different countries! Yes corn flour and cornstarch are the same thing. I have updated the recipe in the description and also added a note for how to make your own custard powder. This is really just a flavouring and you can leave it out completely if you wanted to. That is interesting about the instant pudding, I hadn't thought of that, but it should work and you could potentially get different flavours using that too.
I'll be uploading videos every second week for a few months. I left a message on the SFMK community tab, but maybe you missed it :-)
SFMK community tab? Can I have a link?

It should come up as a notification for subscribers, but maybe it plays up sometimes.
Ohhh! That community tab. LOL!
First time here n finding you so cute n so knowledgeable.Greetings from Malaysia❤️
Welcome 😊. So glad it's helpful!
Use Sao biscuits very nice
Yes, they work well if you don't want to use pastry.
In a Australia its called Vanilla Slice and its my absolute 😍 favourite
You can't beat a good vanilla slice can you!!
Vanilla Custard slice
Thankyou for recipe we're talking about custard squares my favorite
Cheers Wattie bop nz
You’re welcome 😊
It's hard to resist a smooth, creamy custard square!!
Hi....can you use store bought ready made custard?....such as the Anchor cartons?
No it won't hold it's shape unfortunately.
it was good when we had lattice biscuits in australia no longer available.
True, you can use biscuits instead of pastry. Even water crackers work well!
Could you just use custard powder Taryn, or is how you did it how you get that custard square flavour. 😋💗
No you can't just use custard powder for the whole thing, that will give you a much stodgier custard. Doing it this way gives a smoother, creamier custard and the little bit of custard powder is a flavouring. I have made it without the custard powder and it was still yummy. Maybe that's where is gets it's vanilla slice name from.
That look very nice. But can I add fruit salad to the custard like peach pineapple bananas
That's an interesting point. I haven't tried it before, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. If you try let me know how you get on ☺️
How much butter and how much warter
Recipe is in the description 😊
Why the custard powder? If you don't mind me asking, is it a flavour thing?
Yes, adds flavour. You don't have to use it though.
As a Aussie I cringe when ever I hear 'snot block's lol seriously disgusting 😅
What a fantastic recipie and in a microwave no less, brilliant. Thanku so much neighbour 🥰
I've subscribed, xx
Yay, thanks for subscribing. I hope you enjoy these delicious custard squares as much as I do ☺️
💎🎼🦋🙏🛸🌟🤩🌈🧩🪷
Thanks
Sorry…did she say ‘add the custard powder’?
You don't need pastry
That's right, you can use Sao biscuits as you call them. Here in New Zealand they're called water crackers ☺️
Background music is annoying, and distracting, there is no need for it
Both my husband and my elderly father (who lives with us) adore vanilla slice. I think I’ll make this for them on my next day off - I’ll bet they eat it all within 24 hours. ⏱️😊
