    Fact: genetic diseases are stored in chromosomes, Fact: nobody exactly knows what percentage of intelligence is genetic and what is from education but ranges from 50:50 to 30-70. Genetic modification in humans or gene therapy would prevent horrible diseases such as cystic fybrosis, charcot-marie-tooth disease or other alteration from been passed onto your children. This guy is mixing superficial (and ridiculous stuff like being pretty as if there was a standard definition for that) with the real important ones. Of course it needs regulation, and of course it has it. It angers me a lot to see scientist manipulating the audience to share their personal opinion withoug explaining things properly.

    Scientifically, the idea of “designer babies” is an amazing accomplishment. It’s an incredible fact that science has come far enough to design babies without disease, birth defects, unwanted genes, and much more. Ethically, it’s a little trickier. Genetically modified babies would have many differences from babies that have not been modified. For people who can’t afford genetically modified babies, or don’t want them for other reasons, the differences could seem like unfair advantages. Genetically modified babies have the opportunity to be healthier than normal babies, have a higher intelligence level, and have certain physical characteristics that have been deemed desirable. Lots of people are all for the idea of creating a new generation of people that are more physically, mentally, and overall enhanced. This idea of creating a generation of “Gods” is appealing to many people, but other people view it as unnatural. Some people believe that kids should be produced the way that they have for years, and that we shouldn’t be messing with genetic modification. I believe that genetic modification is very cool, but potentially very dangerous. People could start trying to make the new generation of Gods and try to eliminate anybody that doesn’t fit their standards.

      "fact that science has come far enough to design babies without disease, birth defects, unwanted genes, and much more..."
      The rose colored 'sales brochure' is always one thing, and 'reality', is always something quite different.

      Exactly, lots and lots of risks and consequences we don't yet know about. And the problem is that those genetic modifications will be there in future generations too...
      And the "Gods" we will be making would all be the same, because we all have kind of the same ideal. But that means there will be less diversity and that all those "Gods" would also have the same negative features. And that might give some serious problems...

    Improving our way of life has always been a goal of science. Improving the human condition via gene editing is something I personally strongly support and want to push forward. Just because I won't be a designer human, doesn't mean no one else should be. just because your, or your kids feelings are hurt due to someone else being better then you in every way, doesn't mean they should have to be subject to disease and weakness like the rest of us - like you, me, and every other person on this planet. Plus, there's already people who are better then you and me in every way. That should not be an excuse against gene modification .

    Humankind deserves to be the rulers of the universe and this is the next step. Stopping because we are scared is a stupid reason, yes we should be cautious and yes we should take baby steps but we should still move forward.

    • @Eldritchlover
      @Eldritchlover 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mankind does not deserve to be the rulers of the universe and will never be!, the humans are too ignorant and imperfect. Only The Creator or God is ruler of the universe and mankind will soon tremble under his glory!!

    • @navittspottedelk8089
      @navittspottedelk8089 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We do deserve everything in this universe. Why, because we are smarter than anything on this planet and as the evidence is showing us this universe. Our imperfections will eventually be fixed by genetic modifications. "God" if you believe in him has abandoned us long ago and it is up to us to fix our world and ourselves.

    • @Eldritchlover
      @Eldritchlover 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      God never abandoned us, we abandoned him! He gave us free will to live in paradise with him or to live strictly by our own means, which will destroy us in the future. You don't get it do you!, as we get smarter and smarter sure we are doing something good, but what then happens to our good morals, our passion for friendship or love? The more power we gain gives us an ability to become corrupt, unless you have the spirit of Him. We will try to be rulers of the universe and fail! God is the ruler and has never abandoned us, He just gives his sons free will!

    I just listened the ted talk about designer babies. As I understand The speaker Paul knoepfler says we have to be concern about the fact when we genetically modifying our children .
    I think as humans that's what we being doing all these time . We pass on to the knowledge we have to our children to compete or survive in the society. Isn't it similar to modification. So what's wrong in modifying babies to give them a advantage.
    As an example some parents can afford to provide better nutritions when they are younger age but some can't.who do you think successful in a race in the school?

      +jimprjayp No one would want that. But we do this all the time with rats and cows. Not to mention hundreds of crops. We test there since they have fewer rights than humans do and we keep at it until the first "test" is a success. That is the solution.

    • @taylorcompher3681
      @taylorcompher3681 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +Steven drewer You are completely right ethics have stopped humans from reaching their full potential, in order to truly evolve we must be allowed to progress we must be allowed to strive to be the very best that we can be, as a species. When it is first introduced and for the first few generations it will be hell and there will be extreme bigotry but in the end the evolved species will prevail and the non-evolved will die out and there will be no more bigotry because we will all be evolved, until we evolve again and the process continues.

    This guy is scaremongering. He lays out a worse case scenario and appeals to the ignorance, and the sense of inferiority of the people. Obviously there should be certain limitations for the genetic heath of the species, but if done correctly and carefully the benefits would be both positive and profound.

      I agree. For sure PGD and Crispr are risky, but so is travelling out of Africa, learning to be bipedal, and mastering fire and agriculture. Knoepfler seems to wants us to only sit in a couch and watch TV everyday, which is of course low risk and perfectly harmless to his dumb kids, but that's not how humans have evolved since we got off the trees.

    We can and do make people sicker using conventional medicine. But with care, testing and studying, they can be used for good. Until someone can explain why Genetic Modification should be treated differently to surgery in its ability to change people or its potential for harm then they should both be regarded as different techniques to the same goal.

    He makes some good points, but the emotionally charged words and lack of objectivity toward the topic lessened the blow for me. His words, probably meant to be a warning of things that could come to pass, were tantamount to a bearded man on a sidewalk shouting "DOOM ON YOU!" If you do a segment on the pros and cons of a topic, try to speak on the pros for more than a couple of sentences before switching over to the cons. Very little information on the speech was grounded in reality. "Ah, yes," a scientist says, "we finally found the smart gene. You know, the one that makes people smarter. That gene that we couldn't find, but definitely existed. I'm glad we found it. The gene. Now if we multiply it by ten, we can make five-year olds smarter than adults. It's a good thing the smart gene exists." Also, if it costs several million dollars to make a designer baby, then who's going to be ostracized for not having one? Since it's so expensive to "hack" through the babe's internal chemistry, may as well hack his arms off and give him some robot limbs.

    While I disliked the video, he does have some valid concerns. There could be some sometimes extreme problems with genetic enhancements whether they are real (i.e. The Wrath of Kahn) or socially generated through fear or jealousy. I disliked the video though because he wants to put a hold on something that is becoming increasingly necessary as more populations come out of 3rd world nation status with the increase in global economics. While it is a good thing give people a life where anyone can thrive, the negative consequence of better healthcare and expected social acceptance is that it hinders evolution. My mother had medium asthma and I had moderate asthma. In a world without healthcare, I would not have been born. I may not have survived childhood had I been. Fortunately, my son does not, but he could have and his children may someday. It's not exactly a horror story, but the point remains that genetic editing may be a way to circumvent evolution from effectively reversing or halting. That issue may become serious centuries from now or by 2030. The fact that we don't know is why we should be going forward with genetic editing now.

    this argument was such a stretch, and sounds like fearmongering that seems rooted in personal issues about his own perceived shortcomings (beauty which is subjective, and intelligence which is complex and multi-faceted) and family history with eugenics. Says nothing about the possibilities of gene modification for gene therapy, possibly curing inherited diseases like anemia and hemophilia; nor was it that scientific, as genes tend to mutate over generations anyway, so sometimes genes modify themselves in a sense. In that definition, we are all slightly genetically modified organisms.

    • @Eet0saurus

      But what do we see as intelligence? Most people now a days are all about STEM fields, that's the future. So if we could, then we would engineer our kid to be good at STEM. But that would mean it would be less good at other things, we can't make some kind of superhumans that will be good at everything because every positive feature will have negative side effects. So we will be creating a lot of people with the same abilities, what paradoxaly will create a lot of people not being able to think outside that one box and not being good for our survival.

    Humans are not God, these people are people JUST LIKE US, they learned from our genetics, some humans are smart, too. Old people have wisdom, they may not know all but they have been here longer than us.
    God is the one true God, and man is sinful, it's a spiritual thing, but do we hate the Humans whose genes were changed int he womb? No, we teach them, if they sin, they go to God and repent as he is their God and our God, he rules over ALL being in the universe.
