Yes, it's not SF nor LA, but the landlords tried to be accomodating in charging "less". They could have rented it for $1400...more? They at least weren't fully greedy, but $800 is fair , IMHO. $600 is more like it.

It would be sooo interesting if you could do a study of someone’s salary and how much they should be spending it on housing/bills/groceries etc. and how much money they should have left over for leisure. I am from SF but I came to LA for grad school and I really thought I would love it here. There are pros and cons of living in both. One of the pros of LA is that you get to drive from place to place instead of using public transportation. The con is there is a lot of traffic. In SF you basically can't even really own a car...you could but it's honestly just a waste and your car would most likely get stolen/broken into. The thing I really don't like about LA is it is SO hard to meet people here. People are so immersed in their own bubble. People are also extremely superficial. It truly is "LaLaLand" because everyone has these unrealistic fantasy careers yet they try and flex anything they have. Even if you do meet people, they are never willing to go out of their way to meet with you because of the traffic/they are so obsessed with maintaining a certain "image". There is so much to do in LA but no one to do it with. Yes the rent is cheaper in the sense that you get more bang for your buck but it's so easy to get isolated in this huge city. I think SF has a culture of people that are a bit more open minded and willing to ACTUALLY meet up and develop their friendship circles. Maybe I am biased because I haven't found my people here yet.
No I’m from the Bay Area and felt the same way when I went down there for college. It’s different here. Biggest for me was cars. A lot of people do not have cars in the bay, not necessary, good public transportation.
I just moved to the Bay Area from SoCal and I think the same about the situation here lol I plan to go back to SoCal after a year because it just doesn’t feel home to me. But yes you might be right about it being this way because of not having found your people here.
Not sure about SF, but I (expat Canadian) lived in Silicon Valley for 9 years and didn’t find people all that friendly - not even our community friends, caught up in their busy lives. But my wife spent 10 years in LA (prior to me) and made lots of friends, though she’s very outgoing. That said, she did say a lot people tell her it’s hard to make friends in LA, though she as a filmmaker still tends to attract more down-to-earth people than flakes.
Jessica that could of been me on what you wrote, except I did have 2 friends during my entire time in Los Angeles (15 years). 1 still remains my friend, the other one were 've lost touch. Even if you think someone may be your friend in the end you find out it wasn't real
I’m from San Francisco and I definitely can attest that you get more for your money in LA. I was born and raised in San Fran and trust me it’s always been a very extremely expensive city.
Move to Lake Merritt, Oakland. Nice place with great vibe and there's a lake for you to jog around every evening. And the rent is probably around $1,500
I'm about a hour north of SF got a house, 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 car garage, about 1100 square feet, my mortgage payment is less than what one of people are paying renting a room. I think it's insane paying these crazy right rent prices. I really wouldn't want to live in either of these city's. SF has it's needles and poo all over the sidewalks. If I had to pick between the 2, it would be the LA location. I waited until this last housing market crashed and got my house at that time. That was around 6 years or so ago. I just can't see giving someone else a bunch or money to rent and have nothing.
@@kauigirl808 They could live where I do for vastly less money. Plenty of jobs available also. We don't have many homeless people here. But we also do not a temperate climate. Take from this what you will.........
@Greg Gagne You can take that money almost practically anywhere else and you'd get much more house for your money. But they these people just NEED to live in San Francisco or LA
I've seen worse looking apartments for $1k. There was one half bedroom, a bathroom that fit one person with the doorknob that would get stuck when it was closed. There wasn't really a kitchen...it was maybe 5 feet long and 4 feet wide. Barely enough room for a refrigerator. And the walls were thin AF
true..my Aunt lives is SF and she tells me otherwise. She owns two apartment that she rents out to students, specifically. Also, she just bought a house there for 1.1 m and it was literal trash. She had to tear the entire thing down and build a new house! what a deal..not!
these apartments are either pure luck or they knew people if you dont know people to get deals in these cities, then its almost impossible to live there for that price.
Lived in SF for 3 years and couldn't justify the cost. It's ok to be expensive, but it's not ok when you already paid that much and what you get is unacceptable living conditions. I always say to my friends that if your quality of life is below a threshold, it doesn't matter how much you pay, you are buying misery.
@@shannonleeann5643 Yes I agree, between overpaying for bad living conditions and a long commute with much better living conditions, I definitely would also choose the latter. But I really hope there is a third choice. I wish that in the future, people either have (1) many more housing options (2) much better mobility like decent public transportation like in Europe or Asia, or new modes of cheap transportation without bad traffic, perhaps system of self driving cars, hyperloop or flying cars (3) more remote working opportunities
@@NierAutomata2B I don't see how robot cars will decrease congestion. All this pie in the sky stuff like ride "share" have actually vastly increased gridlock. Many cities have seen it adversely affect public transportation too.
@@christinerowlanddeburca4399 Yeah self-driving cars themselves won't magically reduce traffic. It's the economics and people's mindset that will play major roles, and in turn, influence future city planning. If owning a car is 10-100x times more expensive and also more trouble because of maintenance, parking etc., people will abandon privately owned cars and join the autonomous fleets. But I don't see that happening any time soon. Hopefully it will happen in our lifetime. Ridesharing didn't create this level of shift in economics. Many people become drivers to earn money full time. The rides are still expensive in many cities and in low supply areas. People simply can't abandon car ownership for ridesharing in most cases.
My husband and I just moved from the Bay Area. We def like it in our new city and can actually afford a house! The stress just wasn't worth it and we couldn't have afforded kids in San Jose.
This video is painting a different picture of rent in San Francisco and the Bay Area. The house/apartment you have in the video is under rent control. Consider them lucky to even find rent that low. Normally rent would be around $7k for that place.
This video should be taken down due to the fact that it paints a false picture. I hope this does not encourage people to move down to San Francisco and expect to find rent this low.
Honestly for what your friends LA apartment is, I think he's getting a pretty decent amount for his money. That's a fantastic apartment, like you said it's like it's own house. If I could afford it, I'd live there in a heartbeat. The San Fran apartment? I think it's also a pretty nice place, but no way in hell do I think it's worth that kind of money.
yea the bay area is fucking insane. my house is 1,450 dollars per square foot, which is crazy for tiny houses without AC or updated appliances or anything.
@@pcthanh85 I've heard they're about the same at this point (with most people needing a car in Los Angeles which adds a lot more than a MetroCard lol) but I'm excited to move there next summer! Don't get me wrong I like New York but I love the nature of LA with all it's areas and separate cities
@@j2forew974 Having lived in both as well as SF, they are def not the same. NYC is the most expensive, pound for pound, due to the amount of space (or the lack thereof) and the quality of the buildings. Subway is not very reliable in NYC, and most people have to count Uber/cab in their monthly spendings. The houses/apartments are a lot older in NYC, with citations/code violations a common occurrence. Bay Area rent is super high as well, but there are houses you can rent, not just apartments like in NYC. Looking at realtor.com now, there are many listings around Bay Area for a Single Family Home for less than $1mn if you are to buy. This may exist in the outskirts of NYC, but definitely not somewhere you'd want to live in. LA is def the best bang for bucks out of the three, and downright cheap compared to the other two, no doubt. Having said that, if you're looking at mansions with 2 pools overlooking LA, then it's a different discussion...
Renovated shipping container style living may be the future. Lift it on to a truck and find a new location as needed. In Vancouver, landlords rent garden tent space for $1000 according to an article I read. It's up to the feds and municipal governments to build more affordable housing, no matter where you live.
san francisco is not a 5 hr drive from Los Angeles... more like 7 or 8 depending on traffic. (Correction.. its 7 or 8 if you go up the 101... but going up the 5 is the quickest)
Actually you can make it there in 5hrs, I lived in SF and now I live in LA and I've done it. (just depends on fast you drive and the time of day you head out) lol
oh my god NEVER take the 1 or the 101!! i'm sure in about 5 years when the 5 becomes a clusterfuck and we'll have no choice but 5 from la to sf always!
It is from the perspective of an LA resident. In LA hanging out on the roof is not a thing. People hang out by the pool or on the beach. In San Francisco, pools are not common (because real estate is precious, it is a tiny city) and beaches are way too cold most of the time.
Y’all always trying to find everything wrong about San Francisco it’s funny.. someone from like Iowa could have said that and you wouldn’t have blinked an eye
I'm in a rent controlled apartment for a a little bit lower price in Santa Monica. You can get an idea of how much space you get from my studio apt tour video. th-cam.com/video/9pMXO7HnUZQ/w-d-xo.html. Someone just moved out of an apartment just a few doors down from me and they plan to rent it for $2000, a studio apartment, exactly similar to mine. Rent is really going up around here.
It's possible but it's going to be either in a high crime area, or way out on the fringes of the LA area, like in Santa Clarita or the Inland Empire (one hour drive to central LA either way). And we're talking about a studio apartment.
Growing up in LA and now living in SF, I can tell you that both of these apartments are exceptions to the rule. The SF apartment is most likely rent controlled and it’s in an expensive part of town (Nob Hill, i think). The LA apartment is huge and unique for that price. I can almost guarantee that you won’t find an apartment for that price unless you live in the valley. Also, I personally wouldn’t want to live in Hollywood. Also, comparing these two apartments are apples and oranges. Rents are higher in SF but you also get paid more on average. I love living here and will probably stay in the Bay Area for the rest of my life. But a big part of that is because I’m still relatively close to LA so I can see my family often! Great videos though!
Theonlyonestanding lol how did you stay? I consider SF dead, nothing about it survived except the homelessness, which obviously got 5 times worse. Grew up in outer richmond and family moved in ‘05
I am just the opposite. I grew up in the Bay Area but wen to college in LA and then stayed in LA. I love LA and would never move back to Bay Area. To me, LA is so much more happening socially and ethnically diverse. It's the melting pot of the USA. And the people in LA love to party like nowhere else!
Fun fact: San Francisco has one of the highest number of homelessness due to its crazy ass rent rates Person pays $1415.00 for their part of the rent and says “that’s affordable!” Then one roommate leaves: Oh shit! Rent just jumped over $2100.00😳😳😳😳😳 #instantlyhomeless #instantlydisplaced
Right and that’s JUST the rent. Does it include utilities?...probably not. Then groceries, insurance and Lord don’t let anyone get sick and need medical care 😩
@@californiamade5608 Yeah I live in one of the counties of Silicon Valley. Higher rent than SF but no city life nor good public transportation system! Insane
A couple things to add as someone who lives in San Francisco. $1450 for a room in Nob Hill is on the cheaper side. For those who aren't familiar with the different districts, Nob Hill is one of the more popular spots as its close to downtown. Most rooms in Nob Hill are closer to 1600-1700. Also, as you mentioned, the converted living rooms are very popular and they are horrible. Don't ever live in one because they have very little sound privacy. San Francisco housing is expensive because the average salary in the city is 75k per year. If you are making 75k+ a year, then the rent prices of 1500+ still aren't ideal, but they aren't a problem at all. The city is absolutely worth living in if you do get a job where you're making at least 70k. Any less and you're better off elsewhere.
How is a city where people shit, pee, inject needles, smoke crack, burglarize stores and people be and all in broad day light and it all being legal besides the burglarizing an ideal city? That accompanied by the CRAZY living cost should drive anyone away!!!! My mortgage is 1560 dollars and I have a 5 bedroom 2800sqft HOME
Jose Garcia because the average salary is 75k a year, most in the whole world... for example, being a software engineer at SF will make you 45k your first year. then it raises up to 60k to 90k in 3 years. then over 100k soon after. because of tech companies and advertisements, more people have came to SF which made rent hella expensive but people with lower income homeless. it’s a domino effect
Scoot yeah and then rent for a 1 bedroom shack is $1500-1800 , and if I’m gonna go to school to be a software engineer I don’t want to live in a one bedroom shack... so it doesn’t matter if you make 75-80k when the cost of living is so high it’s as if you’re making 30k I live in Texas I don’t even have a bachelor degree and I make 120,000k a year but guess what I own a 4 bedroom 3 bath custom built 2400 sq ft home on 20 acres and don’t even pay 1800$ a month for it...
Jose Garcia no one gives a crap about your dream. u don’t have to go to school to learn cs. either way, the ideal amount to pay for rent is 30% so this video isn’t even ideal as smart individual will live here if only they make 6 figures within couple of years. if skilled and have proper experience, you could easily make over 200k or become start your own business and make millions. become a senior at google (best place to work) and you will make more than 285k. everyone is different due to their job and rent not expensive for you because you make more than the average person in texas
Scoot technology is the future and I wasn’t disagreeing with you. But thats the only thing you mentioned as a job in Cali though LOL. Why is it that so many people move to Texas then if Texas was such a shithole? You’re an idiot if you think California has more opportunity than Texas. You make your own opportunities, it just happens that Texas has MANY jobs that pay pretty decently and you don’t need to spend 200k on a degree to start making 60k and then years later make more money. Look at what’s going on now with corona virus, everyone is loosing their shit if things were to get bad real bad I don’t think a degree in software is gonna help you that’s what I’m referring to, living in a 1 bedroom 1800$ a month shack won’t help either. Living on a big property will help though. You can say whatever you want but I’ll keep enjoying my land, my guns, and my way of life free of California’s retarded liberal ways of restricting everyone’s life in that state and making gas 5 bucks a gallon among other things, LOL I paid 1.21$ just yesterday for gas
idk if you're talking about sf, but it's sad, the more suburban cities (sadly mine) surrounding SF kick out people without homes on the streets so they have to go to cities where they wont be kicked out. Instead of help, they really just try to cover up the problem.
People don't go from renting an apartment or condo to living on the street, that's a false narrative..there is a huge gap of missing information between that dynamic. Ie: (bad choices, alcoholism, drug addiction, crime, and mental illness and of course the ones who are shipped from other states. Very seldom do people go directly to the streets from renting an "expensive apartment" . What most sane people do is move out of State where it is more affordable and logical to live..
@@j.paulandrews261 That is at best a conspiracy theory. Especially recently, most new people experiencing homelessness in both LA and SF are people who have been priced out , lost employment, or otherwise came on hard financial times. Mental illness is the least prevalent cause of experiencing homelessness. "Shipping" people experiencing homelessness to CA, while does rarely happen, is largely a mythical, affluence-driven excuse to demonize people.
I moved from the greater SF area to the greater LA area a few months ago. Housing is definitely more affordable in LA. I've also noticed that groceries are slightly more affordable in LA. However, services i.e. restaurants, haircuts etc. are pretty comparable in my experience.
I’m from L.A. but also lived in San Francisco for a few years. Yes, S.F. prices are much higher, but if you shop around you can find much nicer, bigger and cheaper places to live (and without a roommate) than what is shown in this vid. But that Hollywood apartment is freakin’ awesome! Totally worth the rent price.
@The Shitstorm Starter Social liberalism is not the same as "the left" or socialism. Democrats are for the most part socially liberal capitalism supporters that just vary on the amount of welfare and services they support, most aligning as "centrists", being more generous than Republicans but less so than social democrats like Bernie Sanders. They still tend to let the rich and corporations get away with a lot, though Republicans are even worse. Socialists would be targeting the rich and corporations a lot harder, would try to get every place unionized in the least, and ultimately trying to make companies worker owned and run (or helping establish such companies). They would do everything they could to ensure everyone has affordable housing, including the jobless and underpaid (those who are currently homeless), including building many places themselves rather than relying on private developers who tend to just build luxury apartments and condos. As for the addicts and mentally ill who make up many of the homeless on the streets, that's always a tough challenge but I think socialists would be more open to reopening mental health facilities but with strict oversight so they don't turn out like they were known for in the past that led to both Republicans and Democrats deciding to put an end to them.
@Commerical Refrigeration and stuff Instead of complaining about the cost of rent and how big your cardboard box is do something about it. Katherine is able to move in at that rental cost because she is moving in with an original tenant(s) who has lived there and is under rent control. San Francisco has character in the houses. And that’s what I love about it. There is also the Golden Gate Bridge and downtown is beautiful too. Although prices are high, you get good quality since these houses are old and have survived the big earthquakes. Like my house. San Francisco has so much history. Lastly, weather. Sometimes it’s cold, and sometimes rain and hot. I like that there is a mix of weather options instead of just One temperature you get used to. I ♥️ San Francisco
The San Francisco apartment was definitely a more realistic living situation based on the city. It's actually so sad how expensive rent is compared to our average income in the states
It's because wages have not stayed on par with inflation. Which leads to the homelessness crisis.

So true! But that is expected with the real estate developers pushing into the poor areas and pushing the poor peeps out. It's crazy!
@@ZalinaW It's terrible!!
you should see the average salary in SF tho, sure it's expensive but the average income is $110,816.
Seems expensive but when you see how much they actually make....
Jessica Johnson totally feel the same way about SF 😇. Easy to meet cool people
No I’m from the Bay Area and felt the same way when I went down there for college.

I waited until this last housing market crashed and got my house at that time. That was around 6 years or so ago. I just can't see giving someone else a bunch or money to rent and have nothing.

these apartments are either pure luck or they knew people
if you dont know people to get deals in these cities, then its almost impossible to live there for that price.
I live an hour outside of SF it's worth the commute

Lol then you obviously don't know anything about San Fran. It's the most expensive city to live in the country period.

Orlando Nunez Google it. Type in the most expensive city in USA. San Francisco is the most expensive now...
Kat L. Actually San Francisco is still the highest.

Actually its because states ship their homeless population to California. Look it up
People don't go from renting an apartment or condo to living on the street, that's a false narrative..there is a huge gap of missing information between that dynamic.

The Shitstorm Starter Lefties? No dude, this is neo-liberal policies at work. Actual lefties are against this shit

There's currently a 2 bd 1 ba 650 sq ft apartment on Sacramento Street in San Francisco near the three women for $3,995/month.
I have lived in both areas this is what it is like especially after google, facebook, apple exploded on the scene.
Katherine is able to move in at that rental cost because she is moving in with an original tenant(s) who has lived there and is under rent control. Since Katherine is not the original occupant of the San Francisco apartment and one of her roommates is the original occupant, the landlord would have given Katherine a "6.14 notice" within 60 days after she moved in. As long as the original occupant remains in the apartment, the unit is under rent control with the allowable annual rent increase as outlined in sfrb.org/sites/default/files/Document/Form/571%20Allowable%20Annual%20Increases%2020-21%20EN.pdf However when the last original occupant vacates the unit, the landlord is entitled to apply an unlimited rent increase under the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act. sfrb.org/topic-no-153-rent-increases-under-section-614-and-costa-hawkins If she decides to stay in the unit, she must sign a new lease and become the new original occupant at the newly increased rent.
