    Brother, you have saved me a ton of time. I have a spring compressor tool, but even with the tool, I wasn't quite sure how I was going to get those little keepers in place. The grease tip saved the day. Super helpful!!! Thank you for posting this video.

    Video didn't show much. Now try putting the keepers in with the SPRING IN PLACE. That is what I wanted to see. Thanks anyway

      I left the spring out for easier viewing when recording. Concept is identical, except there's more stuff in the way, more potential for springin-sproingin, and more cursing.

      I agree.... Put that spring back in.

    Good tip! I modified your procedure a bit and got them in. I am going to hell for the things I said while trying to get those damn things in. Pain in the ass is the understatement of the century.

    It’s very easy with the right tools

    I've got the Briggs tool and I'm still finding it hard! Firstly there was only one cap on each spring so they were hard to get off. Now, replacing them, the slotted retainer won't push over - I had to try outside the valve box and it still won't push over so will probably take a round file to it, but meanwhile I've come in to look for tips on putting the collet keepers on, which brought me here. You have now given me a use for those hitherto useless tweezers -- but where are they?!
    Thanks for the video.

    Thanks, doing a Kohler with slightly different keepers than the Briggs.....probably Briggs fired the guy and Kohler hired him. As a result the Kohler design is maybe a hair more difficult since the designer had some experience in making things difficult. Just had to keep at it for several days because 30 minutes at a time was all the frustration I could handle.

    Put doing in vice and close it and use tie wire to keep it closed and put in place with keeper and cut wires

    a valve spring compressor is only 14.00 makes the job allot easier.

    Appreciate the info. Don't use metric tools cuz it's an "American shop"...lol. Yeah, I'm sure you never have to use metric tools on small engine repair. Oh, and by the way, we use the Imperial unit...from Great Britain, not "American". Just sayin'

    Thanks for the video. My engine did not have the split type keepers. Instead, the retainer (disk) at the top served as both the retainer and the keeper. It had a hole in it shaped like the numeral '8', with one side of the '8' larger than the other. The larger part was toward the edge and that would slide over the end of the valve and then you would center the retainer over the narrow part of the valve to secure it. To remove the retainer, I had to shine a light down into the area so that I would know which way to push/pull on the retainer disk.
    It sounds as if JC had the same type of retainer as mine. I don't know why his would not go back over the valve if those were the same parts that he removed.

      yes, that sounds likely. that kind of keeper is definitely easier to handle, once you figure out where the big side is! thanks for watching.

    true, but i didn't have one handy and i didn't feel like waiting! i've used this method before and it works when you're in a bind.

    Great video, small pressure wash engine with bad spring retainer, though the engine is not apart need to find way to keep valve closed while compressing the spring to install retainer. I think I'll have to come through spk. Plug hole to valve face and hold valve closed. Then compress spring. Still waiting on retainer to arrive from China, 2 weeks?. For your info it's a power stroke, suburu engine. 3years old with a 3 year warranty. Yeah.

      @themadmailler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you can go thru plug hole, great. Otherwise, you might be able to feed compressed air into cylinder to keep valve down.

    My mower has a Briggs 16 1/2 with this valve set up. When it’s hot, it will not restart because it is fighting too much compression. The Internet says it’s a valve adjustment, and this showed me how to get the valve springs off. I wish I could find a video that showed me how to grind the valves to increase the clearance

    • @themadmailler
      @themadmailler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't have adjustable lifters, all you do is carefully grind a little away at a time, rechecking clearance after each touch to the grinder.

    I have tried this yesterday, with a spring compressor, Im still cursing and the keepers are not in place...
    The upper valve has a disk for keeping the spring in place, much easyer. B&S 12,5 hp engine...
    Now i wil still continue cursing.
    The video does not show the less space available with the spring, and the wrench in, Nice vid tho
