I’ve played Icecool online. He is one of the online grind gods, and is absolutely nuts. Susan needs the 5B Monarch did go against a Susan in GF. It was DLZ, a EU player I am a mid level scrub Susan OH is the 2nd best move after Naoto EnDP :) Funny enough Justin Wong uses the “not being able to open them up” to his advantage. He said in a Core A Gaming video that his entire strategy is block everything, and punish mistakes when they get mad. The real way to be Monarch is pick Valk, the Jona method, or Koko, the BananaKen way. Unironically Naoto does well against Lambda. His Rushdown can be a lot for Lambda, and since Lambda 2D is not a low, Naoto can sway into enhanced specials or Super to get in. Icecool has played other characters, I’ve gone up against his Izanami. But I think he’s most comfortable with Susan. If Monarch can do it with Lambda, anyone can do it with anyone. Until you go up against someone like Monarch . I too love beating the shit out of Susanno, fucking gorilla ass MF. Once Monarch got the reset I legit thought Ice wasn’t gonna take a match. Oh god that overhead got me so many times. I even labbed the timing of it for both Nu and Lambda and it still gets me. Oh, watching the Celica matches would be hype. Arc EVO would have a side tourney, maybe Slashback? We’ll see.
I started saying this quote in honor of monarch in fact “No matter how good your offense, the only way to guarantee your hits is on defense” On offense you can’t control if your opponent gets hit, on defense you have full control of when you can take your turn back whether it be abare, reversals, whiff punishes, since people are trying to run offense they’re not more at risk of getting hit since they’re not watching out for their defense
blazblue is such a well designed fighting game, people love watching it even if they dont play. so many options on defense and theres no mechanic like risc or 80 percent combos like in so many anime games, throws arent that strong, you really get to appreciate good defense in the game and players dont always feel so pressured to do something crazy to take their turn back and theres a good back and forth on wakeup. it is an anime game but its not crazy fast, it has a nice medium pace to it. I dont understand how people think its similar to guilty gear in any way apart from them using chains/cancels instead of links.
I have to disagree with defense being the best skill, defense is actually a byproduct of the best skill in fighting games, and that skill is knowledge, execution is something you get through practice, combos and setups the same, but knowledge is through a deep understanding of the game, knowing more of a game essentially unlocks the ability to beat better players than yourself, because knowing more allows you to be able to understand situations where you hadnt being, in tvc, IMO im the most knowledgeable player in the world, nobody knows more about the game than me, because of this, I can get into unknown situations and respond inmediately, because of this, my defense is also better than most people, I know the optimal way to defend, and the optimal way to burst, people always say that I dont like getting hit and that I just burst instantly, which is both true and false, is not that I dont like getting hit in tvc, is that the times I get him, I instantly recognize that I can get away with it because I do it in unreachable scenarios, I know so much that I know why a burst is safe because human brain can't process the interaction with enough speed to be able to react to the burst, which is also why im one of if not the only people that kbeast doesn't bother bursting or variable counter, because of the times we play, I just bait his attempts because I know when I can safely go for in and out offense where he would be force to take the pressure. TLDR, defense is an awesome skill, defenitely up there, but to beat someone better than you, you only need to know more, someone that knows more can beat some that at a mechanical level is better than you.
May be an unpopular opinion, but I think Guilty Gear should have adopted Blazblue's ground tech system. Sadly, many people think 'real anime fighters' need to have back-to-back-to-back oki. Having options on wake-up is something more fighting games should explore.
It's definitely pretty easy to forget sometimes I think in modern games but defense is really really powerful. Downback is a really strong position, and it's the reason why so many games have stuff like risc or guard break or strong throws or even crouching confirms to weaken it. Monarch is so good because he knows this and picks a character who can auto zone you and you really have to work to get in, and then when you do? Can't even hit him. Gives him plenty of time to find an opportunity to counterattack and just send you right back to neutral again. It's brutal.
to answer the video title, the ability to mental boom the enemy player with hakkymans 5a. 5F STARTUP BABYYYYYYYYYYYYY. Can you hear that 3 counter hits in a row?
What u said about not being able to open someone up? Had that moment in Granblue in lobby, had no idea what to do against the Yuel until i slowed down and just trying different nonsense, then once i realized he got conditioned to spot dodge my blue grenades (i play Eustace), that's when i was finally able to do something by mixing in the yellow grenade instead and boom, the flow of the whole match changed and i finally started taking some wins. They were definitely a better player then me but damn... i was fucking stumped on what to do lmao
You should do a video on Monarch's set with Betadood at CEOtaku 2023 Grand Finals. Watching Bdood do everything in his power to open up Monarch with Ragna was pretty entertaining lol.
These tournament analysis vids gave gotten me into playing blazblue and ive been grinding it like crazy. There is this weird narrative around the game that if you go online its only like high level tournament placing 10 year vets when in reality the average player online is not that different than a random strive or sf6 player. Everyone acts like you need to training mode for weeks just to play online...
I have a friend who complains about BlazBlue's roll system as well. Thing is their complaint is just that it's *different* so they can't use their muscle-memory autopilot from other games
Monarchs defense will always amazing me Life lead and block for the rest of the round is a gigantic amount of confidence especially in a game like Blazblue 😂
Sick! Always love to see a good BB final. Interesting to see another Susanoo of all characters. Wish I was better at this game but I still have fun when I play with my scrubby Noel. Keep up god’s work!
Susan's mix being reactable is the greatest lie the Susan players have told the community. It's true that his overheads are mostly slow: 6D hits crouchers on frame 26, 6C on frame 25, and Hunter's Fang on frame 23 (with a very obvious animation). The secret is that after you block 6C up-close you are now standing, and 6D will hit on frame 20, with a solid chunk of that startup being very subtle. Susan can also gatling 6C into 2D instead so with 50 meter to make it all safe this becomes a low-risk hard-to-reactable 50/50 for massive reward.
Also yeah truly unreactable fuzzy jA overhead setups (which require 50 meter to convert from I think) character is more of a menace than the illuminati would have you believe!!
Commenting on every video before Arakune BBCF combo trials, video 113. More Monarch content? pog! edit: im tempted to go to a major (combo breaker) and hold a sign asking for arakune trials just to mess with Jiyuna lmao
He asked me if Icecool had used the Command Rab of Susanoo, things would be different? He asked this since I am a bad player and I only use Noel is a doubt that I would like to clarify.

I know Monarch's play style is lame, but let's be honest this play style is impossible to do on Strive or SF6, devs don't want players to play defensively anymore. It's like devs want all players to play a certain way. Like you can't turtle anymore, you can't play run away zoning, everything is heavy and ground based. Characters like Milia and Axl are dead
As someone who has played BB for so long. The one thing that scares me about Susano'o is the one time he decides to do 2D instead of 6D. Two mixes and they are bringing in the stretcher.
It should be noted that this tournament started at 10 AM CST, and grand finals started at 11 PM CST, so fellas was slump out here lol
Damn lol
Dbfz moment
😮
Monarchs defense really do be inflicting heavy mental damage like frustration and desperation. He gonna take advantage of that if he senses it.
Staying calm and collected, having fun losing, playing just to play. I feel any or all of those are super valuable characteristics

For people who wanna watch some Japan BB, Kazunoko hosted a mini tournament on Christmas that has a bit more character variety.

glad someone mentions BBCF's knockdown options.
yet another goated feature.
Honey wake up, Jiyunas uploading more blockblue!
"Striver" is my favorite slur.
Bring out the Strong Zero boys, we got another BlazBlue video!
It's always a treat to see Monarch's defense. And tbh if he didn't mostly play Lambda, people would still be calling Es cheap.
Monarch still running it
i love that yhis is a blazblue channel
More blazblue? You love to see it 🙏
Monarch putting the gorilla in his cage, finally.
man, tis always fun to watch our boy watchin bb matches. I want to see a live participate in gbvs next fsfs
we need Jiyuna to enter next tournament renamed as Revolt to end Monarch, whom mindgame first win the set

It's cool that you're gonna feature other people on this Monarch Highlight Reel channel.
I will stop Monarch
Oh hell yeah, can't wait to see those Celica matches, the grind for beating the notable player Bobby it's just beginning.

They can't touch your Life bar while your attacks are connecting!
(They're blocking? Not forever!!)
XD
Waiting for the bobby matches 🔥🔥
Ice cool needed to grab him instead of repeated 5a attempts.
Blocking just to let the opponent go for their best mix, get opened by some fake shit, and die anyway? Nah we mashing out here
BLAZBLUE I LIKE
I like monarch, but i love susanoo
"how does he block that?"
it susan, no mix, all mids.
Honest Mids Susan
I hope at evo blazblue show something new game/trailer.

They talked about it but no changes
Yo watch the Persona grands from frostys next!!
Do people still play this game? I was thinking about picking it up
On PC, yes.
instead of tager i think hazama would be better although the nu MU is annoying but less annoying then being tager
im disappointed
its not plugging coz idk how to counter it when 2p keeps doing it XD
The strongest skill in fighting games is defense ... That too with an example from an ArcSys game! OK!
I’m too into persona now to grind fighting games help me wise sir
I’m grinding Dave The Diver
