  • Disney Pixar's Luca is an adorable movie that I could watch all day (even if my kid calls it "The Italian Littler Mermaid!"), but let's take a deeper look at Alberto, his actions, and his motivations.

    I loved this analysis. I also think that Alberto’s feelings were coming from a place of loneliness and not romance.

      I was reading something that said human brains have trouble telling the difference between love and fear, and I think that can certainly relate back to Alberto. He is afraid to be alone or left behind, but he is not looking for a romantic companion.

    A lot of people said that this movie was "shallow" compared to usual Pixar, but tbh I don't care, I haven't had as much genuine simple child-like *fun* watching a movie in a long while

      True dat! Pixar has a habit of getting too heavy and too emotional. Luca was "just right" with having some somber or serious moments, but nothing too emotionally overwhelming. If you have to leave the movie to cry, they're working too hard at stabbing you in the feels.

    By the middle part of the movie, I was rooting for Alberto get that home/role model that he needed. I felt that hurt when his one and only friend started to show interest in another friend. He was the only one that didn't have that comfort about having more than 1 friend and having different dreams. And that ending, he needed stability, even though he wanted to travel, he really needed a home.

    When my sisters were watching Luca on Disney+, I heard Alberto's voice as a similarity to Sokka's voice and his personality but with Lars' hairstyle.
    Now that you said that Alberto touched the moon once, that made me think about Sokka being with Princess Yue again. And every time I see or hear Alberto, I say: "Oh Sokka, you saved me!"
    I described Luca as a mix of an Italian Little Mermaid and Onward.

    I saw a brother bond, and in other countries brother bonds are more I guess “affectionate” then American brotherhood. But doesn’t mean they are “gay” but more so showing love. Yes I thought the whole movie was about Alberto!!!!! Because Luca himself is the only child, spoiled in a sense, and has ideally “everything” in his life. He has a community he says hey too in the morning. Family. And also easily can make friends with almost anyone. Alberto on the other hand. Only knows to fight for the things he needs and wants, which is shown because every time he is comforted by Ercole, Alberto’s short temper and will to fight show, making it hard for him to fit in. Even Giulia doesn’t like Alberto at first. But has a soft spot after she finds out they are both sea monsters. But the DAD!!! And Alberto both have kinda the same upbringing. The dad was born without a arm. So it makes me believe he had to fight for respect. And if the DAD killed a “sea monster” which is why the town respected him and looked up to him on that topic is it possible he could have killed Alberto’s mom or dad?????

    • @TheFangirlWatches

      Yes! It makes me think of the movie I Love You, Man where these two guys had this platonic romance. You can't do ANYTHING in the U.S. without it being interpreted as some true love nonsense. I mean, romantic love is nice, but we act like that's all that exists and it's the end-all-beat-all of emotions, which puts waaaaay too much pressure on dating and marriage. Calm down, love your neighbors, love your friends - it's all good!

    • @thenamesdesi276
      @thenamesdesi276 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thank you, I saw brotherly bond between them as well but fans are saying they are "gay". And personally there is nothing wrong with them thinking that way but this movie didn't give me any "gay" vibes, I just saw 2 friends exploring and trying to hide the same secret and Alberto being protective of Luca was just him being jealous of the relationship Luca and Giulia had during the movie and people are calling him a "protective boyfriend". But you're one of the very few TH-camrs I've seen say this movie isn't "gay".

    • @thenamesdesi276
      @thenamesdesi276 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Bronze Warrior ik Giulia was suppose to be a love interest for Luca, but what I'm talking about is Alberto and Luca being best friends and not a couple. And I like that this movie didn't involve love interests and it's just a movie about friendship

      @Bronze Warrior aw man, do you know how mad they're gonna be if Luca and Alberto don't end up together. I don't ship Luca and Alberto. Like you, I see it as more of a friend/brotherly relationship. That said, I can understand why other people tend to ship it, particularly those in the LGBTQ+ community who can relate to feeling like they have to hide who they are, just like Luca and Alberto felt like they had to hide the fact that they were sea monsters. At one point, Luca's grandma even says: "Some people, they'll never accept him, but some will. And he seems to know how to find the good ones." So, yeah. I don't ship it, but I can understand why others do.

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think it's the same issue with He-Man, and you can read that show with the grain, or you can look at all the "my parents can't know I'm He-Man" talk, and the fact that he transforms into a muscle dude in underwear, and then read it that He-Man is a metaphor for being in the closet. It's there and not there at the same time - so I get inferring that kind of thing with Luca. BUT, having said that, it seems like every time someone is kind to another person, they get shipped, which means Alberto and Massimo should also be considered a thing because here's this big, hairy bear asking this other guy move into his house so he can love him and build a strong relationship. Shipping THAT as a couple is as out there to me as shipping Alberto and Luca, and we get the same amount of evidence for both "couples" being a thing in the movie. I like seeing some a-romantic movies, and I wish people would leave it at that.

    I think we need more explicitly gay romantic films so we don't have to wonder. But even if that is not this case, I'm so glad we had a movie so sweet with boys developing such a beautiful friendship. And I really enjoyed Massimo s arc, being a grown man that learns and changes his views on people. I've seen so many men that are convinced they are "too old" to even try to change. I also really enjoyed the ending when Alberto chooses to say goodbye to Luca changing into the sea monster form. I felt they were finding pride in that aspect of themselves. Ah, such a sweet film 😭

    I loved this movie! I thought Alberto’s story arch was very nice. But my favorite part was the dynamics between the boys. Their friendship, silly antics, dreams, arguments, jealousy. All of it. Young, close friendships are stories of deep love/ loyalty/ betrayal. It’s emotional for children because it is their first independent relationships outside of their family. I agree, I did not read this as a romance.

  • @BuizelCream
    @BuizelCream 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    This is my favorite take in reviewing Alberto's arc. You explained things in such a logically transparent way that is easy to understand and relate. Much love to Alberto and his future.
    I also have to agree on how you felt about the film's ending. It would have been nice at least to end the film in an actual happy ending where the whole cast is united to a new status quo. Then we save the separation angle for a sequel just to elaborate more and lessen how jarring the film's actual ending turned out.
    I'd love to see Alberto and Massimo father-son chemistry shown more believably, and Luca's interest in the world be explored deeper, like when he later wants to see more beyond Potorrosso and his ocean home kind of way. Not save all of this development in the . . . adorable illustrations in the credit scene 😅

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The ending almost strikes me like the old Spaghetti Westerns where the hero would wander off into the horizon, and we wouldn't have a clue what was really next for them. I wonder if that was something the director was trying to pay tribute to. But, I agree, as an ending, I would have liked to see them skip ahead to the NEXT Summer and see that everyone IS okay, instead of hoping things will go well.

Luca was, as expected, really good, but I was suprised of how much I loved Onwards - well, it's a movie about siblings, so maybe I shouldn't have been suprised at all. Luca´s story is about him & Alberto indeed - with Giulia going into a third-place later on - but yeah actually Alberto is the very first character ever shown of the main-ones in the story, even before than Luca, though he didn´t get a line or it´s clearly seen at the opening as later on when he mets Luca. However the story is on BOTH and there are hints about how deep and close their bond goes even perhap BEYOND FRIENDSHIP AT THE FUTURE, this is the sparkling start of all which might became something else later on but the opening and closing song tunes are very much into ROMANTIC tune-setting than being RANDOMLY PICKED in all!

  • @emillyhale7557
    @emillyhale7557 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Personally I believe that Luca and Alberto are simply very deep but nonetheless *platonic* friendship, as the director/writer, Enrico Casarosa, based Luca and Alberto's story strongly on his own friendship with his own childhood friend, Alberto. Enrico Casarosa is happily married to his wife, Marit Casarosa, and he and Alberto remain good friends to this day.
    I won't stop people from shipping Luca and Alberto (as I often ship different characters myself), but personally don't see them being anything more than friends. Still, I'll leave it in Enrico's hands where he takes the characters relationship.
    I agree with most of your points. Though I personally felt satisfied with Luca's ending. He started out as a simple farmer boy who wanted to learn more about the world, now he's going go to school to learn more about the world. Sure, it's going to be hard for him to learn and adjust, but it's challenge I'm sure will be more worth it for him in than riding around the world on a Vespa. Luca's a bright boy who I'm sure will do well in school with focus, his creativity and Guilia's guidance.
    I agree that Alberto had a lot of growth in this story. Even more happens for him in "Ciao Alberto".
    Luca and Alberto actually remind me a lot of Corey and Shawn from "Boy Meets World" in terms of their intimate friendship.

    For Alberto’s father, I saw a little fan comic that the “Silenzio Bruno” came from little Alberto growing up hearing his mother scold his father Bruno. And the “Alberto, don’t do that, Alberto, don’t put that in your mouth” etc, originated from his dad trying to stop him from doing stupid stuff.

    As a Slavic person, I did not see any friendship between the two boys. I do not speak for all of us, but we do have this two-stage process of making friends. The first step is getting close to someone, knowing him better. At this point, you hang out a lot, discuss stuff, help each other with smth simple and irrelevant. For us, it is not friendship, but a good acquaintance. The second stage, friendship, starts when the major things come into play, like when you help with smth that really matters. It requires that both individuals in the relationship are sincere and do not have hidden motifs behind their bond.
    When Luca and Alberto first met and started to hang out with each other, they both had selfish reasons for doing so. Luca wanted to get new and fun experiences. It's ok, but the boy went too far with it. Alberto wanted someone to stick close to him no matter what. To have a 'friend' that will deal with all his emotional problems, to feel good at someone else's expense. His emotional issues were obvious and I'm surprised that this romance thing emerged at some point. One was using the other and vice versa. And even though this sounds unpleasant, it is how I saw their relationship. So, when Luca protected himself from Alberto's actions by calling him a sea monster, I agreed with the boy's response. What else should he be doing? They were not friends, not in the way I saw it. He did not betray Alberto, in fact, it was Alberto who did the wrong thing, putting Luca in a risky situation and disrespecting his trust. Alberto put his 'friend' in danger by revealing his true identity in front of a human, and Luca had to think quickly and respond fast to protect himself from a human 'friend' standing right next to her, not at some distance like Alberto, but just in an inch from him. They never had a conversation about choosing sides before the incident (I mean Alberto mentioned the risks, but he did not tell the truth about why he warns Luca and he did not put it straight - who would you choose, is it me or her? He never did that), and they sure did not make any promises. They did not even know each other that well, the fact that the girl noticed Luca's struggles tells it all. She was more of a true friend the whole time, supporting the guy, learning about things that make him happy and making sure he's ok. Alberto's suggestion to run away together does not count as help and support 'cause he wasn't thingking about Luca at the time, he was thinking about himself and his emotional comfort. The internet, however, had the opposite opinion. It even made me feel like the public was unhappy with Luca because he was softer and an easier target to punish for acting 'wrongly'. The true friendship between the boys began there, on the platform, when he revealed the ticket. Before that, they were anything but friends. No betrayal. Luca is a story about how to make friends, and yes, it's about friendship, but the way we see it differs.

      Friendships are overrated anyway

    • @irunata8
      @irunata8 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I am Japanese and I totally agree with this opinion.
      From Alberto's point of view, it is tragic that he is constantly abandoned by the people he cares about. No matter how much he tries to make himself look good, he destroys himself because he lacks the necessary skills to live in society due to his upbringing and because he never developed respect for others. It is truly tragic.
      However, from Luca's point of view, he was the embodiment of ideals at first, but if he doesn't get his way, he destroys his future career path and all the trust he has built up and binds him to it.
      After all this, it is no wonder that all of his friends have given up on him.
      It is so foolish and pathetic to throw away one's good fortune because of one's own egoism and inferiority complex, even though one has been blessed with friends.
      In the director's comments, Alberto is also said to be "Alberto is gonna really reveal their biggest secret,so it's really betraying Luca in many ways." He seems to agree with you and me.
      Plus his family name Scorfano=scorpion fish, a dangerous fish - word also used to call someone ugly.
      In the first script, Alberto dragged Luca into the sea to expose his true identity and break up his relationship with Giulia.
      In this way, Alberto may have been a character originally designed as a villain.
      Because of this change in the script, Luka, who was originally supposed to be in a position to be sympathetic, has been stigmatized to a level that is unforgivable no matter how much one may recover from it.
      And for Alberto, the impression was that his unfortunate upbringing exonerated him, and no matter how terrible he did, he was not only not blamed, but rather pitied.
      Incidentally, even in Japan, there is a mood of total defense regarding Alberto's words and actions. I felt alienated because of this, but I am relieved to see the comments from the director and you.

    I would say that the movie really is a love story between Alberto and Luca, but that doesn't mean sex. Everybody is too obsessed with sex.
    Alberto becomes, in effect, Luca's big brother. After being alone for so long, having someone younger to look up to him is addictive. And someone distracting Luca and luring him away is very threatening.
    There's also a fraternal love between Luca and Giulia; but in my shipping container, this grows into something larger over the next few years.
    And finally a filial love between Alberto who has lost his father and Massimo who has never had a son to fish with him. As much as he loves Giulia, she lives with her mother and only visits in summer.
    So yeah, it's a love story, and a very charming one.

    I agree about seeing the boys as having a friendship that is as genuine and true as love. I think this is the only Disney movie to have FOUR acts of selfless love in a row. When Luca promises to win the Vespa for him because he wants to show Alberto he matters to him, when Alberto brings Luca the umbrella to ensure he can pass as human, Luca saving Alberto when he was caught in the net, and then in the end when Alberto gave Luca the ticket to let him have his dream.
    In that sense I completely understand why people read it as more than a friendship. In fact, I do love the idea that Alberto and Luca could be boyfriends when they're older, specifically because their bond is so selfless and significant. The events in this movie aren't focused on romance, but the movie has some definite queer themes and I think it wouldn't really take away from the movie if one or both did end up being gay. In fact, it really would sort of play into the fact that so much of the movie parallels the gay experience.

    Alberto & Luca aren´t necessarily in love as into a true-romantic bond between them through most of the movie, and their main bond-relationship was pretty much a deep lasting close-friendship between them overall, HOWEVER throught the end of the story, as Alberto & Luca´s friendship bond is restablished and healed from the previous break and both have evolved from their previous selves, there are SOME HINTS that the relationship between them MAY BE SHIFTING ON into something deeper and different which COULD may be more than a simple close-brotherhood-friendship IN THE FUTURE. (The most important hint is indirect through the translation of the lines at the song played at the credits: Citta vuota/It´s a lonely city, which is a pretty accurate romantic tune about someone in love eagerly awaiting the beloved one away from the city into a dynamic which kinda looks a lot as Alberto´s situation at the end of Luca.
    That and the opening choice of song at the movie as "Un baccio a mezzanotte/A kiss at midnight, it´s also hinting up on a romantic subtext as the allegory that the boys are friends for sure, however mostly for Alberto as he is slightly older than Luca and has other emotions rising up on more evident puberty changes than Luca or Giulia, he might be getting glimpses of harboring other feelings and other interests behind or alongside mixed the close friendship-brotherhood issue ... those things COULD HAPPEN too, AND though it could be argued that wasn´t the main or canonic focus of the story and characters development, it KINDA STILL remains there to be AMBIGUOUSLY SEEN by some viewers and COULDN´T BE MISSLEADING THINGS ALL TIME.

      Little Mermaid has the memorable songs and were transitioned masterfully by the creators. Plus, by careful study in context, there's a lot of modern misunderstanding this film has been getting over the years that needs to be readdressed, such as Ariel wasn't really a hopeless romantic as we used to interpret her being 🤔

    nowere I have seen someone as sick to imply stuff about Massimo & Alberto other than their bond as father and son in all, even all the stuff shipping Luca & Alberto - which by-the-way set most of this stuff happening LATER ON after the movie´s ending as both are properly able physically, emotionally and psychologically to evolve their friendship into something else - and it´s always set up as Alberto gets adopted by Massimo as his father, and becames suddenly Giulia´s step-brother too, doing better friendship with her. The ship of Alberto & Luca helps to made even more closer related all the three families together into one larger unique one: Luca´s family, Giulia´s one and Alberto as the common-link in both as he became Giulia´s brother and then she kinda became sister-in-law with Luca too.

    Honestly it’s not completely out of the blue that Alberto sold the Vespa to get Luca the ticket, he was being observant of his friend’s desire to attain knowledge and he really did mention it quite a few times how much he’d love to learn more. It is happily ever after for both of them and in very different ways I like your observations but Alberto being keen on something like this makes sense as well, he seemingly off camera spoke with Lucas family and to Julia about this because they had his suitcase packed and ready to go for him. There were discussions because I’m sure no parent would just take that information and be ok with it all of a sudden.

      This kind of makes me wish the resolution of the film was drawn out and shown a little more, or given some more time for it. Those are definitely important on-screen moments that kind of is a missed opportunity that it wasn't elaborated as much as it should 🥺

      I think Alberto was so moved that Luca would give up his safety and his own dream just so Alberto wouldn't be alone or killed. It saved Alberto and got him off the island (representing how he didn't feel like a person worthy of love). He wanted to show Luca that it was okay for him to follow his dreams because he'd always have his back.

    It is pretty clear where the internet got that idea. The first clip was put up soon after the release of call me by your name, which is about a gay romance between two guys on vacation in Italy. And then they called us homophobic as if our only reason to disagree was that they were like twelve, when in reality they just didnt have evidence, and author authority was against them. They even went so far as to ignore the fact that those two old ladies are credited as sisters. It’s not that relevant, but it shows how desperate they were.

    People ship a lot of weird things. (These are kids and I'm just eh on the idea of shipping kids tbh but that's personally me.) However i think from an lgbt perspective, people want this to be a ship because this is how a lot of us discover we're not straight. I had a wholly different way of figuring that out myself, but a lot of my gay (male) friends have similar stories.
    and if you made one of them a girl character, this movie would absolutely make a pair out of them. It's been done 100 times before.
    So i think this particular ship is more about a severe lack of representation in movies and tv. I actually learned that I'm pollyromantic through fanfics and rping. So i know that some of this shipping is coming from people who just want to see themselves in a movie without there being a huge sexual overtone or funny sidekick trope.
    At the end of the day someone will activly ship everyone together.
    Based on what the director said, it was not meant to be a budding romance or allegory. It's a fictionalized representation of his own childhood friendship.

    Before I begin, please be sure to understand that I believe you can interpret the movie however you want and I’m not judging you at all, but the movie gives off a very gay vibe. Luca’s parents threaten to send him off to get “fixed”, he meets this boy, and they want to run away together. Luca wanting to go to school represents wanting to join society and not being afraid of homophobes, and Alberto not wanting to represents that he wants to create a separate society and not wanting to deal with the rest of the world. When the grandma says “some people might not accept him, but he seems to know how to find the good ones” has a very obvious undertone. Also, not that it really matters, but you can’t ignore the curly hair and the cuffed pants. Also Guilia is canon lesbian to me lol. But your opinion is yours and I respects that.
    Also, Albertos fathers name is Bruno. His Dad never supported him so when he left he invented the phrase, “silencio Bruno” to help cope.
    Also, the ending felt satisfying to me. If Luca stayed, that would be him giving up on his dream to go to school and then it would have looked like Alberto was holding him back. I’m sure they’re both going to be happy.
    I totally agree with you about Alberto and Massimo, they’re each other’s better halves. The father son relationship is too good. Thanks, and best of luck with your future vids! ❤️

      Exactly!! It bothers me when people say “why does it always have to be romantic” when talking about same sex relationships because it never is. Disney refuses to make queer characters so we almost have to do this to feel represented. We wouldn’t have to ship Luca and Alberto or Raya and Namaari if Disney would make canonically queer characters finally.

    • @lee_loves_gaming
      @lee_loves_gaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@rainbow.fr0g That’s exactly what I’m saying!! Disney and Pixar need to do better with their representation. And the internet doesn’t make everything gay! Kelly Marie Tran, who plays Raya literally confirmed her character was GAY!! When people say things like: literally nothing can be platonic you’re making everything romantic, that sounds like they’re saying the LGBTQ community isn’t allowed to be represented. So you white straight people can be represented but they can’t? Thanks, your reply made my day!
