She’s a tragic character and her own worst enemy, genius enough to craft some long term convoluted schemes, but blind to her own bigotry and how her actions have caused her own tragedy. Love Demona’s story more than her!

@@brandr7964 I don't blame Demona in many ways. Humans did do her wrong. Absolutely. BUT there are many things she CAN be blamed for, too, as everyone else pointed out. In fact I used to BE her. (a misanthrope) due to severe bullying and abuse growing up. I hated people. But found so many GOOD people on the book of faces when I became an adult and got it, even got a boyfriend, learned not all people were out to get me and there are in fact good people in the world. But, I never UNALIVED anyone! Demona can and should get blamed for that. If she hadn't turned genocidal I'd have a lot more sympathy for her. So yes - Meagan aka Fangirl is right, she's a victim (started, I believe, by prince Malcolm who unintentionally, I feel, turned his daughter Catherine into a bigot with his boogyman stories "the gargoyles will get you if you don't behave" which started this whole thing and started all of the events that followed imo he hasn't gotten enough of the blame for this) and then dahdah dah what happens happens, but yeah. I'd be 100% sympathetic to Demona if she hadn't turned genocidal. Am I partly sympathetic? Of course. But only in part.

All I remember from her is that she suffered for centuries and she's the one that told the story of the curse of the castle to be lifted up to the sky. Hatred of humans because of how fear can turn them cowardly which led the destruction of her clan. And has a soft spot for Goliath but not enough to erase everything she had done.

@@TheFangirlWatches Demona, hmmm. As a person with a history major from university I do understand why she did not like humans, lol. We can be - and have been many times - a pretty horrible species. She lived through 1000 years of European history including Hitler Stalin, Franco, etc. I understand all of that her feelings. As for what started this course (feeling injustice that helped lead to her betraying the castle and every other event that followed I put the blame on Malcolm for most of it. I'd be happy to explain if you want.) However if I were Demona I'd just avoid humans not go all genocidal. A LOT of what she does make it harder to feel that bad for her. She even killed humans and tried to kill the whole species. I guess I prefer characters who were brainwashed and manipulated into serving a psychopath who kills but the brainwashed don't themselves kill and there is evidence they wish something different for their life.

I agree with most of what you said but she didn't completely trust the general. If she did she wouldn't have hidden behind the castle. Yes she suffered all those years but she made an eternal enemy of The Hunter by attacking a child out of spite for humans. I get why her fear that Macbeth would betray her after what she heard but she could have talked to him too. They showed how she creates her problems alot. And her daughter tried to reach out to her but she burned that bridge tricking her. She wanted a relationship with Demona but her old ways hurt her chances. I love her though. I do wish she had a happy ending. Its a sad life she has.

She’s a tragic character and she has been through a lot. No doubt about that. That being said, she had lied to Goliath and the other Manhattan clan members. About the plan, how she survived for all of these years to even trying to change Goliaths mind. While I do believe she had the best of intentions, she has also tried to kill them many times over. She is in fact her own worse enemy. That being said, considering her past, I guess she was just doomed to be evil. Much like King Lear.

  • @FullMoonDeria
    @FullMoonDeria 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

This is gonna be really long, so apologies in advance. Gargoyles is hands down my favorite show and Demona in my top ten villains, so I have a lot of thoughts.
So what about those nice conversations and alliances that she threw away with Macbeth? Yeah she was burned, but he literally did nothing but support and thank her or rely on her for the safety of his own clan and she sold him out, helped to murder him, and got what was left of her clan destroyed by removing them from their allies. Then when he shows up for revenge in the present day, she's surprised, angry and hateful to him even though he did literally nothing to her beforehand.
Before that, the Wyvern clan wasn't killed just because of humans or the Captain's failure or Goliath's good heart. She had the chance to warn the members left at the castle that they were in danger, to try and take them away to hide before dawn. But she chose not to, to hide alone, and to hide from what she did. She made no attempt to get the rookery eggs back from a princess, small boy, old lady, and mage she may have been on par with, and ran to the other half of the clan to blame the humans. She increased the gargoyle prejudice through ruthless and violent actions, even throwing around her own clan when they complained about their decreased quality of life, and was not at all open to talking. She was, and still is, very open to beating dissent out of her clan with her bare hands though.
She resurrected Cold Stone and pitted him against Goliath with her internalized truth that it was his faith in humans that got him killed, rather than the fact that she backed out of warning him. She accidentally shot him while trying to kill Goliath and not only never apologized, but helped the more selfish soul take control of the body. That's not how you care for your people.
Goliath sucked at it, but he did try to talk to her more than once, hoping he could reach her, but she is too stuck in her ways to be swayed. It's not helped by the fact that from the moment they reunited she was lying to and manipulating him. And yeah he redirected his feelings onto Elisa gradually, but that was also after she proved herself a trustworthy friend AND after Demona tried to wipe out the rest of the clan with the Steel Clan and a bazooka...at a time before the rest of them were even suspicious of her. Which has been a recurring thing with her, completely willing to take out the innocent for just being in the way. He also tried to go talk to her after she attempted to poison Elisa and failed, only for her to already be on the path of murdering him and forcing the clan to accept her as leader. And that was their first meeting after he thought she died during that previous fight. It would be a little hard to stay faithful to your bonded mate after that I think.
And then her own daughter tried to bond during the arc that created the clones, presumably over the course of several weeks while she patiently held out in her cell and stole most of the clan's dna. Angela listened and responded, and Demona still betrayed the entire clan and her trust.
In truth, we haven't most likely seen the extent of the damage that Demona's hatred has probably caused through the centuries. It helped ruin Macbeth and kept the Hunter's legacy alive, much to her annoyance, and it got her clan almost fully wiped out. But it's the humans' fault, always the humans. No matter who tries to talk to her. And as far as her wiping the humans off the face of the earth? The Hunter's Moon arc shows that she's been working on that plan at the very least for decades, so it wasn't Goliath that pushed her to it. She even mentions to Goliath that if she can wait centuries for her revenge then he can wait a few nights.
Demona is an amazingly written character and it is easily understandable how she got to where she is, but she definitely is far from guiltless in the continuing misery and isolation she suffers, or to the negative way she impacts those around her. It isn't that no one has reached out, or that her mate has now turned his back on her, or that someone just need to sit and talk with her. As long as Demona's heart is hardened, she'll always be alone with her bitterness. Even Macbeth, who was living for revenge for almost as long as Demona has been, was able to finally begin to let it go even after she toyed with his feelings and played him in Paris. I think it's important to remember that because it's part of what makes fer an amazing character and villain.

Demona started from a place of genuine concern for her people. And many of her issues stem from placing Gargoyles before all others. While that sounds good on paper, even before the 1000 years without Goliath, Demona wanted Gargoyles to be above humanity, to rule over them. That stems from most humans treating them like beasts, and I get that. It breeds resentment. The true issue between Demona and Goliath is that Goliath is patient enough to wait out the mistrust humans naturally have to these supernatural creatures, while Demona does not. Goliath is the kind of character that can take discrimination and let it roll off his back because he knows human nature, and how that nature can change, and Demona can't. Every single one of their issues comes back to that one point. Demona cannot suffer an indignity to her or her kind. Warranted or not. She is the protective nature of a gargoyle gone off the deep end. And that unwillingness to change, that refusal to see that humans by nature can change how they see and treat others, is why the rift between her and Goliath widens. Its why her mistrust of humans lasts a millennia, because she sees mistrust even when its not there. Even when forced to admit that SHE KNOWS what her issue is, the revelation bringing her to tears, as soon as she is able she shifts the blame back to humanity. Because she can barely stomach the thought of her own consequences. That is the main reason why Goliath and Demona never get to have that heart to heart. Why they never are able to mend what was broken. She cannot admit she did anything wrong. She cannot admit that her worldview, while generally applicable in the short term, is fundamentally flawed.
You are absolutely right that Goliath brought issues of his own into it, and is not blameless. But he also didn't immediately replace Demona with Elisa. The reason he saves Elisa in Awakening after Demona's betrayal is because he is a protector, and she can't fly. He is devastated to loose Demona again in that moment. Even as wrathful as she was to humans. He was angry enough to try and kill Xanatos IMMEDIATELY. Its only because Elisa reminds him of his own morals that he doesn't. Demona is the product of Trauma stuck in a cycle that she doesn't actually want to break. It doesn't excuse her actions. But its all the more tragic that those actions are easily understandable.

Also just spit balling here but I've noticed that no creature in Disney ever trust's the humans. for example: Ariel and the other mermaids, Peter Pan and the other fairies also never trusted humans, and the gargoyles couldn't trust them either. I have A theory about this. perhaps the Disney universe is A world where humans are the creatures and the creatures are normal. I mean just think about how Disney always gives us the human perspective on how what they don't understand is strange. I just feel like the mythical creatures from mermaids to unicorns all have a common fear HUMANS I think it's because humans in general are just cruel by nature. And Disney is trying it's best to show that to children, and sneak in a little bit of the good side here and there

Gargoyles was a favorite cartoon show of mine when I was a teen. It was my understanding that the clan of gargoyles she got involved with after the tragic events at Castle Wyvern was composed not of her own clan, but surviving members of other gargoyle clans in Scotland that were mostly wiped out by humans. I could be wrong about that though. One big aspect that I realized MANY years after the show concluded was that in the pilot that set up the show, Goliath never bothered to stick around and take care of the Gargoyles' eggs down in the rookery. The idea that he should stick around and take care of the next generation of eggs didn't even seem to occur to him. If he knew that another portion of his clan was alive in some cave away from the castle, you would think his first priority would be to contact them, explain what happened, and lead them back to the eggs, to take care of them with the others, but that's not what he did. He abandoned the next generation of eggs. Maybe he thought he wouldn't be able to take care of them all on his own, and it would be better for them to die through being unattended, I dunno. Whatever was going through his mind, if it was a gross over-sight on his part or intentional, it's a disturbing decision on his part. I don't remember the Princess offering to take the eggs with her, but she did, and Thank God for their sake, otherwise, the new-borns would have died with no one there to care for them. Of course, Demona abandoned the eggs as well, so, think about that. She didn't clone Htailog, Xanatos did that. Htailog and Demona merely... hooked-up, not that it lasted very long.

Her ideas to destroy humanity is both insane and somewhat genocide. Also you can't denied what she was going to do if her virus would've killed Macbeth; she would've died but her vengeance clouded her logic to remember that, not only that she even tried to steal Angela from Goliath to be a gargoyle to be a ruler without humans, but Angela would never loved it or her mother since Katerin took the eggs under Goliath request since raising 36 eggs would be hard for him since never can tell when a new enemy would come and try to raid the fallen castle Wyvern

If it’s canonical fact gargoyles mate for life, then Goliath clearly wasn’t playing them both like that. In fact, romantic feelings don’t really present between the two until late season two after the boat journeys. She also planned the downfall of humanity before he was awoken too. In fact, their being awoken WAS part of her extermination plan. She only woke them up for their help in her revenge so it’s not a result of Goliath meeting Eliza. She only really hates her not as a romantic rival but as simply an enemy who convinced her love to not believe in her views. He loves demona still for many years giving many chances before any form of love love was shown towards Eliza. Other than the whole anti Goliath view of this video, I still completely agree that she was much justified in her views after 1000s yrs of trauma.

I guess Goliath was pretty stupid and blind-dumb guilty about how he actually deal with Demona when he met her again, still she kinda was so much mess-up that it was pretty much OK he choose over Eliza Maza and so her common biological daughter, Angela, also was fond of that. (She was raised up by humans doing the best for undoing the mistakes in the past, and well... they did great on the hatchlings indeed at Avalon.)
It may be true that Goliath pretty much messed up stuff when meeting back Demona, however she was very messed on herself by all the negative experiences she got, which kinda were a reflection on her own harsher agressive way of acting to everyone, not just humans (though particulary more on them, with justified views kinda indeed but also very mistakenly over-generalized), so that negative feedback just went on her going over and over time messing her untill the issue with Goliath made her burst out in full-rage. However THEN came the issue with her daughter, Angela, and there WAS NO POSSIBLE redeeming issue on what she attempted to her, just because of her father deeds.
Demona has a very sad story with a lot of justification but still NOT ENOUGH to discount her totally as a villainess on her own. It´s sad but true - there is no way to properly defend her to make her not accountable on her deeds. That´s a very cheap and naive psychollogy view that has no account on morals actually on actions, not arguments or ideologies.

Goliath was in a pretty awful situation too, he might have gotten to skip all of those years but imagine you wake up after a thousand years with everything you ever known and loved gone, but then like a miracle you find out that the love of your life was still alive.
I can't even imagine how much that would have hurt to see how much the centuries had twisted her.

Demona's defense lawyers here: What is Demona supposed to take responsibility for in the Dark Ages? That she was groomed by an old man into learning magic? Or that she wanted what was best for her people, after herself being burned and tormented by humans over and over again, and was then tricked by, again, when she trusted humans? Then Demona went on lead what was left of her clan in the caves, an effort she did tirelessly for decades, and she got entangled with MacBeth's drama and continued from there. Demona made the best decisions possible, first as a naive girl who was manipulated, and then as an experienced woman who learned to trust no one.
Demona does not betray Goliath until he shuts her out, never really asks a question, and never tries to hear her side of things. Goliath was already into Elisa Maza at that point to - so who really betrayed who first? You can only poke a bear so many times before it will maul you.

And Goliath didn’t develop feelings for Demona until long after he found out that she was responsible for the Clans massacre. So yes Demona betrayed Goliath first

Good analysis video! Demona is on my list for 5 bad asses in the 90s.
I gotta offer a counter analysis though. Not trying to correct you or anything, just food for thought. Goliath imo is why Demonas motivation for why does what she does, but Goliath is not solely the problem. Demona lived a thousand years of hardship, true. But we see much that was her own fault. Goliath may sympathize with her if she told him, but without the explanation he believes her own prejudice we saw before the Vikings has simply gotten the better of her. That's not what made him turn his back on her though. It was the words she spoke with a rocket launcher in hand. "If you are not my ally then you are my enemy." She's tried to kill him numerous times. That puts a damper on any relationship. And not once did Goliath try to kill her. But that ultimatum she made in that scene is hard to forget. She thinks he doesn't know the pain of betrayal, he sure felt it there. And he STILL loved her enough when he thought she died again he doesn't just roar in agony he turned around and almost killed Xanatos. "She wanted me to destroy humanity, I think I'll start with you!" And it took a lot for Eliza to talk him out of it.
He became attracted to Eliza ironically because she reminds Goliath of Demonas qualities. She's strong and committed. And when Goliath and the clan were reawakened they vowed to never trust humans again. But Eliza showed him it was alright to trust again. She never betrayed him and protected him as much as he protected her.

Demona was always one of my favourite characters on Gargoyles. Not because just because she was voiced by Deanna Troi herself, Marina Sirtis, but because she was a compelling character. Yes, she made mistakes and didn't take responsibility for those mistakes, but how often in real life do we do that? How often do we make a decision that ends up having disasterous consequences for us, and then we refuse to acknowledge that decision? I also agree with you about Goliath though. He was the guy who was set in his own ways. How many times did the rest of the clan have to stand up to him and say, "this is wrong Goliath"? Like when it came to leaving the castle because they were no longer safe there once Xanatos got out of prison. Even Hudson knew it was time to leave, but Goliath refused until Macbeth attacked them at the castle, in hopes of drawing Demona out into the open.

I remember reading an article years ago where the writer said that if the show continued on, Demona was eventually going to come back and have her redemption, part of that because of Angela. Long post: Haven't watched this show in ages, details are quite fuzzy. However what isn't is Demona and her general characterization: which is very memorable.
From an artistic stand point Demona's arc puts the show in a tight spot because the topic of trauma, life, death, killing, cannot be explored in a nuanced, meaningful fashion because it's a Disney kids show. They can't explore that trauma can be long term doesn't just disappear over night because one wants it too: it's a process which lengths wildly depends on the nature of the trauma. On top of which, since trauma doesn't operate in isolation, from a narrative stand point the show can't risk doing anything that fundamentally places Goliaths character in negative light, even when his actions do play a negative role.
In regards to the nature of killing people, the show can't in anyway abide it. Instead of a "it's an emergency, last resort, to be treated with the gravity it deserves" and exploring the consequences of the context it happens in, the show has to take a absolute wrong approach instead for the censors and sponsors.
Demona is a wonderful character, with the the most engaging character, however she also suffers from the same narrative problems that a reoccurring villians(like Callisto from Xena) tend to encounter: diminishing significance returns. Demona becomes less meaningful a tragic figure if she keeps showing back up like the Joker or Magneto. The viewer can be numb to the emotional weight the character is supposed to have. That's part of why I don't rewatch the series; she's my favorite character, the most interesting, and(if memory serves correctly) she gets flatter as the series goes on, so interest waned. On top which the romance angle between Goliath and eliza did nothing for me. Regardless of all that great video exploring a great character in a cool series! Interesting insight, and perspective given!

She is a tragic villain in the same vein as Darth Vader. She thinks she is in the right, even knowing what she is doing is wrong.
Her treatment by humans made her hate them. Her plan within the castle with the Captain, the only one she could trust.....just went wrong. And it set into motion everything else.
But she is also in the blame, same as Vader.

Gargoyles was my favorite tv show growing up. My favorite characters were all of the surviving clan members except Goliath when I was a little kid. As a kid i viewed goliath as way too insensitive and pushy. As a teen I thought the guy was a butt hole with the way he treated others into only following his view on things.
For a show that had diversity and a more open minded approach to its overall story, the main character turned out to be a very closed minded individual unwilling to adapt to things unless it suited them in some way. Even the oldest of the clan was more into the changed modern world than Goliath was and most elders are stubborn and set in their ways to go that far. Some of the other characters weren't bad but they had their flaws.

Nobody can force you to agree, but Demona is an extraordinarily well-written character for a "boys cartoon" in the 90s. She is deep and complex, and her motivations are there, if you take it in from the female perspective. But, I have noticed that most males want to see the show in this black and white sense of justice, as Goliath does, and thereby can't really relate to Demona or her motives.

Ouch. So much of what's being said is taken out of context to make Demona look better than she really was. At some points, it was so skewed I frankly wonder if the show was seriously watched. The Captain did NOT kill the Gargoyles - Hakon and the Vikings did, and more for pragmatic reasons than anything else. The Magus did curse the Clan - in a moment of misplaces grief that he then regretted the rest of his life, to the point of raising the Gargoyle children along with two others. And Macbeth did not use Demona - the pact was made by both , with Demona regaining her youth at the cost of Macbeth's own, and living for decades in peace until a moment of paranoia caused her to ruin everything.
Honestly, at some point I stopped, because it's so skewed, not pointing out the huge part Demona played in her own misery. THAT is the tragedy of the character: that her own choices and her own inability to own up to her own mistakes is why she has lost so much.

    • @peterdanior4538
      @peterdanior4538 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Exactly, the fact is that nobody ever betrayed Demona. She betrayed the castle to the Vikings, she betrayed MacBeth to Canmore. She never trusted the Captain, that’s why she hid. And MacBeth was legitimately her friend. As much as Elisa was to Goliath in the beginning. And she is constantly blaming Goliath for not “trying to understand” Demona’s anger. Like if you found out your work fe was secretly a serial killer, it’s your fault if you don’t don’t stick by her side

Demona was right on every point the made. Humans are evil, they do deserve to all die.
The issue is, is it then right for demona as an individual to destroy them?
Its like the reverse situation of Goblin Slayer.
From Demonas perspective, shes the Goblin Slayer, and the goblin is humans.
Just because there might be a single good human out there, does that mean i allow these ones to live on the off chance they dont end up being evil ones?

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

I agree that, from Demona's perspective, she is 100% right and justified in her way of thinking. The thing is though, Gargoyles don't have religion, so Demona has no one to pray to for help or guidance to smite the humans. However, she is a magic user, she's worked hard to learn how to defend herself and her people, and, of course she's going to take action into her own talons when there's no one else to turn to for help. And, let's also point out that Demona doesn't really have any self-fullfilled prophecies where she makes her own villains - MacBeth and Demona entered into an agreement willingly and things went badly, but I don't see that as being her fault. I also don't hold the Castle Wyvern attack as her fault - it would have happened either way, she just got blessed with the information, even though she was nearly helpless to save the rest of her clan. So, when bad things happen to you without proper lead up to have that bad thing feel "earned," of course you're going to turn cold and mean to those who wronged you! I don't understand why so many people hold that against Demona! Like... flap a mile in her wings and see what life is like!

It's amazing how women spout nonsense to excuse their bad behavior and poor choices. Demona betrayed her clan and chose not to warn them, the man she trusted did try to protect the gargoyles, but he was just one guy. That was all her fault.
It was also her fault for assuming the worse of Macbeth and believing he was going to betray her when he wasn't.
It isn't Goliath's fault because he isn't forcing Demona to do anything, she is choosing to be evil if she stopped, Goliath would take her back, but like most women she's too prideful to admit she's wrong and except fault.
This woman is a perfect example of how childlike the average woman is, they deflect blame for everything they choose to do on other people. Their refusal to except responsibility and grow from their mistakes is the height of immaturity. Shame on this woman for this poor take on a great show. Stop blaming men for your poor choices.

@@JonathanGhost42 I'm not being against women. You have to face the fact that most people days have been spoiled by the comforts of society.
Women mostly thanks to feminism as it has demonized men and made women think that men are against them and they need to compete.
When you think about nature and that women are weaker and have always needed men to provide for them that can create a childlike mentality in women where they see men in general as their dad, and since they're spoiled they blame daddy for everything. Does pointing out someone's faults so they can improve make you against them?
Or you could look at it that since men can overpower women, the only reason any woman can do anything is because all men are allowing them to. So of course every mistake a women makes is men's fault for allowing them to do it.

My theory he was under a spell of Macbeth mind control spell making him go mad only works on the weak minded what he's going through brings a break up to the gargoyles team splitting up permanently even towards demona the last episode as the the TH-cam movie critic says it might of been all a dream all in his head the whole time demona left him for blowing it in his dream of becoming so naive it split up the gargoyles team also he was alone in a misty place on a boat old raft boat talking to I think a wizard as if he's in exile punishment for his betrayal explains why the other gargoyles show its just him alone and miserable with new characters he meets also new story Goliath you ended the show you blew it bye!
