    Env scientist here:
You are both right about ozone because there are 2 types: good (stratospheric) and bad (tropospheric). Stratospheric prevents harmful UV radiation whereas tropospheric ozone is a greenhouse gas that prevents radiation from the Earth being able to pass into space thus causing global warming. Stratospheric ozone is produced naturally while tropospheric ozone is produced by humans. The Montreal protocol heavily regulated chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs -> the stuff in aerosols) thus the hole in the ozone layer has been making a miraculous recovery which is why you probably don’t here much about it anymore.
Also interestingly enough we use ozone to disinfect our drinking waters sometimes since it produces less toxic disinfection byproducts than free available chlorine.
    Hope that helps!

To put a few things right:
    1. The whole „Nikon is dying“ thing came from some badly informed influencers etc who were trying to get views with clickbait videos / articles.
    2. Yes, Nikon had ONE year of losses in 2020, partially because of COVID but mainly because of shutting down the Japanese factories and moving to Thailand, stopping production on some DSLR lines and not yet having enough mirrorless.
    3. The Z 6/7 II were not ideal when they came out (just after the Canon R5 and R6) and didn’t allow Nikon to recover market share.
    4. HOWEVER, the Nikon Z 9 has been extremely popular since launch and has seemingly gotten a lot of marketshare in the professional / high speed camera market, also launching it at $ 5500 which is 500 / 1000 below Canon Sony‘s equivalent model was a massive deal.
    5. The Z 8, basically a mini Z9 with the same technology is even more affordable has been equally successful and considered to be one of the best hybrid cameras.
    6. Nikon got sued first by RED for implementing NRAW which is a compressed codes based on TicoRaw‘s compression algorithm which sports industry leading efficiency! Nikon then sued back, basically questioning the validity and righteousness of the patent. The suit got eventually dismissed without prejudice.
    7. Nikon is making significant profit with both their cameras and lenses and currently growing. Look at the current financial statements. Also, they acquired SLM a German company a market leader for industrial high tech 3D printing for $ 660 million, showing that Nikon has considerable finiancial resources. RED will have been significantly less then that.

    • @CatPixStudio
      @CatPixStudio 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Finally an informed person. Thanks.
      Here is my take on...
      (1) why Nikon had a real shot with their lawsuit against RED in contrary to Apple, Sony and others:
      (2) why Nikon won't licence internal compressed RAW in the near future to competitors:
      (3) why it's a good thing:
      (1) Nikon had an entirely different lawsuit approach as shown in the video below.
      th-cam.com/video/__X25Fr2K_M/w-d-xo.html
Nikon claimed that the application for the patent wasn't valid in the first place as RED made serious mistakes doing so. And Nikon surely has tangible evidence for it, which other competitors don't have.
      (2) BUT if Nikon had won the lawsuit instead of the joint dismissal and agreement with RED in 2023, RED would have lost their patent. Which wouldn't have been just a big loss for RED but a loss for Nikon too. Because not just Nikon would have benefitted from a "free" patent, even more so Nikon's competitors, who already have a good grasp in the video/cinema industry.
So with their joint dismissal of the lawsuit and their agreement the important patent still stays intact. And now RED and Nikon can benefit from each other without other competitors benefitting from the patent.
      (3) In a strong competition with big companies like Canon and Sony having a strong ally behind your back is a good thing for development and production resources AND in the end for the consumer.

When Nikon released the Z6 it wasn't the same situation as the RED lawsuit. You had to pay a $200 upgrade fee and send your camera back to Nikon to enable ProRes RAW recording, which we all know is an Apple codec, and Apple pays that license fee to RED. The lawsuit really started with the Z9 and the NRAW codec that Nikon created with IndoPix. If video is just a series of stills, then RAW video is just a series of RAW photos, and every professional camera can take a series of compressed RAW photos. The patent should never have been granted. It's partially the fault of the patent office, but also RED. When filing a patent, you're supposed to disclose if use of the technology had been mentioned or used prior to the filing and it had.
As for the lens rotation and Nikon, Nikon were making lenses before most companies. They used to make lenses before they made cameras and made lenses for Canon at one point in history, so I would argue that everyone else's lenses are rotating wrong. I look at it the same way you drive a screw; right goes in and left pulls out.

    • @chiefdenis
      @chiefdenis 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yep, everyones lenses are definitely rotating wrong the nikon way has always made much more sense to me, twist left to zoom out, right to zoom in; left to focus closer, right to focus farther, we do everything left to right why should camera controls be any different.

15:30 Nikon is not on their deathbed. They do more than cameras. In addition to buying RED, they also have Marc Roberts Motion Control (which I believe you guys use... right?). They manufacture medical imaging equipment. Also, best bit, and something I learned recently from a Nikon Rep: while Sony makes all the generic sensors for companies to retool and send to Sony for production, the fabricators that makes Sony's sensors are... made by Nikon! So whenever any Sony Pony uses the whole "Sony makes the sensors in your camera" argument, you can always tell them that the machines used to make those sensors were made by Nikon.

Yeah Sony do have a slightly better autofocus system still, but Nikon are now really far ahead on telephoto glass options. Seems like they're just bringing out something new every few months now. The firmware updates to the Z9 have been incredible, but it does still have a tendency to front focus on the cheeks of birds/eyelashes on humans, which is something Sony seem to have pretty much completely solved. Nikon's attitude to firmware updates is a breath of fresh air and seems to be prodding a few other manufacturers into doing more too (e.g. Sony are _finally_ bringing some updates to the A1 😅)

From what I understand, Nikon historically have made a lot of their money through glass. I believe they make glass for a number of other companies too, and they used to even have Nikon lenses on other cameras (e.g. the Plaubel Makina). They took too long shifting their focus to mirrorless and that's largely the cause of their downturn, but the last year has seen a big uptick in their fortunes now that they're heavily focusing on it. The Z8 and Zf look to be very popular so far - the Zf is apparently one of the best-selling cameras in February in Japan.
I've got a Z9 that I largely use for wildlife photography (an area that Nikon still dominate, in my experience, and they have by far the best telephoto selection), and its video spec is really, really good. The only things really missing are a better LOG profile (I hate grading the current one, compared to Panasonic's), and video-specific lenses. If the RED purchase means Nikon are gonna start churning out video lenses, we could be in for a bit of a treat.

O3 isn't stable, it decays naturally and has to be continually reformed. This happens via the absorption of UV radiation, so "the ozone layer" doesn't really block UV radiation, large amounts of UV energy is absorbed by the formation of ozone from oxygen in the upper atmosphere. CFCs were so bad because they not only take this energy for their own chemical processes, but one of the products (chlorine gas) singlehandedly catalyzes the O3 -> O2 reaction that normally happens a lot slower. So CFCs stop the formation of new ozone while simultaneously speeding up the break-down of ozone gas.

Maybe I missed it, but I was expecting somebody to point out that Nikon now has global shutter technology. That might be a significant thing in the near future. And yes, Nikon is the smallest of the three. And it shows the most in marketing, which partly explains how the majority of starters don't really consider Nikon. But they are very profitable, also because Nikon doesn't only sell photo equipment, but is also heavily invested in the industrial optics. The first gen Z6 & Z7 were a bit of a disappointment, but the Z8 & Z9, "retro styled" ZF and no doubt the future Z6III are on pair with the competition, improving on them on some specs. The lens mount twist direction is a lame thing to whine about. Nikon has had it since the F mount saw light of day 65 years ago. Imagine Nikon deciding "no let's do it like Canon, they are the leader". That would not get a warm reception from its user base. At all. If you can use a new camera with different button placements, color science and menus.... you can learn a new direction to twist a lens or focus ring.
We're all curious what the future will bring, even for me as someone who never uses the video mode on my Z cameras. Nikon is a big, old, traditional Japanese company with a specific culture and values. While RED is a small niche US company with its own mentality and pace. I'm interested in how this will work out.

Not that I support dealer markups, but as a point for Andrew's grocery store analogy, the same box of cereal can cost quite different prices depending on which grocery store you go to and, also, what part of the country you're in. Grocery markups are a very real thing.

As colorist. Red one or arri is all the same. What makes arri constantly winning Oscar for cinematography is reliability. Red one is famous for shutting down and software issues. Red one is amazing at slow mo, it has nothing to do with grading. Hence why music videos and music that use lots of slow mo tend to go with red one. Red one also tend to go towards digital look rather than filmic. Also lots of cinematographer are going back to film. Red one history has always been amazing at marketing and resolution. Arri history is very closely related to lots of film roots. Their rental house is everywhere and most camera operators is arri trained. Both camera are excellent, but nothing beats reliability of arri or panavision.

About the counter-intuitive "compressed raw": compression need not be lossy. It's often the case that we think we're losing information when compressing but this isn't always the case (take PNG images for instance). So if it's compressed raw, they're most likely using a lossless compression algorithm that is hopefully optimised for video. It's not really about "removing frequencies of light that our eyes can't even see". The compression here is most likely not discarding any data at all. The whole point of raw is to have that data precision that your eye doesn't even notice so that you can edit it freely *before* encoding it yourself (degrading it), avoiding artefacts and increasing editing possibilities.

Frankly I wish Nikon would produce a dedicated camera in partnership with Apple that is much better than an iPhone camera that in my opinion, lacks capable optics. Could even opted into a small payment program see where you're slowly paying for your next vehicle years possibly even a decade before you buy another which would give you a massive discount on the actual vehicle in addition to whatever you paid for it in monthly payments.

Also I might not like flipping but if I paid for something I have a huge issue with someone still effectively owning what I'm able to do with it. The problem is that there are limit amount of products a company is able to make in a year. If you want the freedom to be able to sell the thing you buy then congratulations you are now never buying that item because 100,000 opportunist flippers just signed up to buy the product before you by using bots.
By restricting people from resale you are making sure that the person buying the product is actually using the product.
Its the same reason why we have a housing problem. All of these houses are being bought up by companies and not being lived in, just so they can make money reselling the property in the future. We desperately need laws that force the owners of properties to actually use that property.
