For all those asking, Gobelins doesn't use any crazy niched software. Character research is sketched out by hand until the final design is locked down and cleaned up in Photoshop. Sometimes the students take the older research into Photoshop so it looks more presentable to showcase later on. The animations (keys, breakdowns AND in-betweens) is completely done in the classic way: with a light table and pencil on animation paper. It's not uncommon for the students to record themselves acting out scenes for reference. This completed animation is then scanned and taken into TVPaint (a french-developed software) for digital linework and color. The backgrounds are all done exclusively using regular Photoshop (with the different moving elements broken down into layers for easy compositing). Compositing is done using After Effects. In many cases, many sound effects, including character noises are original and recorded specifically for the film. Music is also original and is sourced out to a composer. Short answer: TVPaint. Every Gobelins animation (including Annecy shorts) uses TVPaint. It's a 2D raster software, kind of like Photoshop, but for animation (as opposed to ToonBoom for instance, which is vector-based) ^^
@MageBurger lmao the Adobe Suite is the most used suite of softwares in the world. And TV Paint is well-known from animators around the world. How is this niche ???
@MageBurger aha no, niche actually means that something is not directed to a big and mainstream audience, but rather is aiming for a very specific public.
I love how in the beginning, we were given focus on the poor beaver who didn't have the talent. Then the king arrived and gave him a personalized cape and an axe. But most importantly, he gave him what others had tried to take away from him -hope. And so we think the beaver is the main character. The beaver tries his best to please the king who had helped him achieve his goals of building. But the king is never contented. At first, I thought the arrow through the king's crown was just nothing but a unique character design. But we see near the end the axe that gets stuck there too. Symbolizing that this has happened before. I think meeting the king is what the beaver needed all along. The king was actually the villain who developed the beaver's character. The king had helped him know more about himself and made him more rebellious and courageous. This was a beautiful story, well-animated. Cheers.
Wow, he had an arrow through his crown since the beginning and after seeing the ax get stuck there too you can conclude he's been through this situation plenty of times. If he doesn't drown in the end, i'm not sure he will ever learn his lesson.
@@teamof2 Maybe the king offered bows and arrows to some predatory animals like wolves or foxes so they could hunt better? I could see him trying to build a big tent 'castle' out of furs and getting an arrow fired at him when they ran out of game to hunt.
There's a tale of a selfish king, Who scour the earth for royal bring. But castle he need, greedy in heart, To hope to build a castle start. All it takes was a simple plan, That turn to blight and worsen grand. And cycle repeat, mistakes were made, Never to respect a friendly aid.
The first theme that crossed my mind when I first watched this short film was imperialism. The so-called "king" extorts manual labor from the creatures to develop his own measly kingdom. The axe and the spoon are the tools of coercion which caused the beaver to feel like he had a purpose when in reality they the animals were just devices used to function the tools they were handed, completely objectifying them. The short also emphasized, in my opinion, the adverse impact of imperialism not only on widespread individuals but on the environment itself. After the damage had been done and his kingdom crumbled, the "king" sought to create another one disregarding all the adverse effects it had on the land and the individuals. Although he had the tools himself, axe and spoon, the king still chooses extortion and the possibility of impeding doom for all, highlighting both the ignorance and narcissism rooted in imperialism.
@Ian Visser lol you call quitting free labor "throwing away his potential". I don't see how employment (giving animals the tools) and the effort to finish the product (the castle) are equal in reward? The animals are all naive and "uneducated" so to speak and they do an ok job but there's always a catch (the wrecked castle, digging close to water) cause ultimately the king exploits the animals and it's not without consequences.
this is probably one of the most fluid and dynamic animations i've seen so far from gobelins, and considering all the frames together with the details, it might be easily at the same level of studio gibli or even beyond. the quality of this animation is so awesome that it deserve way more than a short.
Excellent travail !
A 7 person crew doing a 5 minute film of this calibur, assuming they're third or fourth year students at gobleins, might take little over an entire school year. Gobleins is by far the most talented animation school in the world.
dat colors, dat animation, dat cartoony humor! holy moly i havent been entertained by animation like this since i watched samurai jack all those years ago. 100000000000000/10
Depends on the deadline they're given. If the artist is given the same amount of time and budget to do that 4 minutes as several artists are given to do 40 it's likely to turn out nicer because the others are doing 10x the work. That's why theatrical films always look better than a TV series even if you have the animators doing both. The latter is several films worth of run-time.
oh my gosh can we just appreciate how absolutely amazing and stunning this artstyle and animation is? especially the backgrounds, im so in love with this
In the first second of this film my first thought was "man do i wanna be on that hill rn that view is gorgeous" i absolutely love the way they animated the grass blowing too 😍

To see the true beauty put into animation work. There is no type to who subscribes to what on here, it's a matter of outreach and networking. SO IF YOU LIKE THIS STUFF SO DAMN MUCH SHARE IT MORE xD
+Mango Kingoroo well I mean its ok to be stupid, but being ignorant is another story lol but I to each there own just because people watch more stupid things then stuff like this I am not sure that makes them stupid though more like lack of interest.
People watch how to basic because there is funny content. Here is animations that aren't very long, that take a while to create, and are generally just the same amount of entertainment. For this one in particular I found the whole story to be rather dumb.
Oh God I love this short animation the movements are so flawless, the drawings are AMAZING. The characters are adorable. I can't even. I don't know anymore. Can I just eat this.
Oh my God why don't you see this kind of animation in big-budget movies?! Absolutely outstanding and didn't even need words to convey the message, infiniti/10 stars hands down!
I did find one animation error: at 2:54, the beaver's cape was untied before it was blown away, but when the King caught it at 2:56, it was still tied.
Oh my god.. That... was so amazing.. The wind animation and the dynamics at the part where the castle was falling over were so exhilarating. I got MUCH more than I expected out of this small film.
Ce vidéo est incroyable, on peut vraiment ressentir toutes les émotions des personnages et la musique et vraiment bien choisie. Un travail exceptionnel.
What a story! Starts with encouragement, then bad weather, then discouragement, then displacement, then replacement, that seems promising... till a possible disaster strikes
absolutely adorable! :3 I love the style of this animation, it is very charming! Also I love how you designed the animation to have no verbal text so it can be universally viewed and understood by everybody no matter the language they speak.

Maybe I say that because I never heard about it.

Not do be rude but the we in your sentence does not include mos tpeople
This is a pretty great analysis!
I guess the beaver will feel a bit lost after stopping his work

How much you wanna bet that spoon's getting thrown through that (obviously paper) crown?
I'm pretty sure drowning also doesn't counts as a lesson learned.
Im pretty sure u cant build anything using an arrow

I really love how fluid the animation was
I wonder what earned him that arrow through his crown...
Next the crown is gonna have a shark tooth stuck in it
May be he 1st went to tribal people.
I guess elf
Squirrels?
He gave arrow to help tribal people who wanted to hunt animals, and then count of animals become very less and they tried to hunt this man 😂.
La métaphore et l'animation sont juste magnifiques.
