I love how regardless of gender, the problem always arises from the lack of communication between parents and children. Harrowingly and beautifully shown in the movie. I could feel the depression and sadness in the kid right from the start...I teach students and see that the most unfulfilled and troubled lot are ones with restrictive parents who don't really connect with the kids....sad af, really.
I was afraid it would end with the poor child actually killing himself (i.e., the shots of the piled-up dishes and unanswered messages)...his asking his mother felt like the 'warning bell' for me. 😔💔😢
I agree with the comment but still don't think that the main idea here is the lack of dialogue. Saying regardless of gender sounds like you don't see that this is even a bigger problem with the trans community because of prejudice, not accepting your own body and many other problems that make life even harder.
The last scene has me tearing up. The question and then the look of realization on the mother's face as she realize just what her child mean with that question. She's been so worried about her own feelings that she hasn't considered her child's in the least and now that she's faced with the reality that her child thinks about death she realizes that she's hurt her child in such a strong and impactful way. She looks absolutely horrified.
I like that the mom finally sees how something is wrong when suicidal thoughts are hinted at. Hinting that she might change and the future we can imagine is a better one.

The issues of identity, of transgenderism and a place in society... all such complex concepts yet such crucial things to come to a child's mind, yet alone the one featured in this video. It sheds yet another light on the unique but harrowing realities of our social views on these topics, of acceptance from fellow peers and our own family, of our thoughts of death. On a more critical note, I loved the art direction of this video. The texturing, lack of shading, limited palette and stylistic choices help to make the animation stand out, yet emphasises the emotions felt by the child. The way the story limited itself to the kitchen was a nice touch. It's a place of preparation and socialisation, yet the child feels mute and halted in their' ways. It's extended to them wanting to be disassociative of the kitchen, the way in which they reject eating and observing food an intriguing yet clever move. I have yet to say more statements about the quality of the animation, but I shall stop myself here. Bravo, Gobelins, for yet another excellently executed short by such skillful students.

! Im glad it ended on a high note of the Mother finally realizing who she wasnt seeing in front of her the whole time.
That ending hit me hard... oh wow
you can feel this, they're expressions are so real and so intense, its wonderful
not a single frame in this piece, absolutely beautiful

I wrote about this film for my English homework. It was THAT good.
Très fort, magnifique
Juste magnifique, bravo.
Une véritable animation coup de poing. Chapeau aux réalisateurs!
Wow I loved the art and the meaning so well done. Beautiful
Thank you !
as a trans man, the message given by this animation is very well put. the colors, the drawings, the voices, all of it was perfect. great!
Quelle finesse !
Bravo
definitely leaves me wanting more.
Hoooly shiiiiiit. That last moment hits like a train.
Everything about this is awesome! 😀
Bravo, superbe film
💗
I'm using this for my English assignment!
Woaw...
That was insanely beautiful. Wow.
God that poor girl. I hope her story ends well
