If you liked the guy playing Master Thenardier (Barry James), check out the Phantom of the Opera live at Royal Albert Hall. It's on Netflix instant watch and he portrays Monsieur Firmin.
Ethnocentrism, we think that the version we encounter first is the best because we're used to it preformed that way for so long. I love both versions, but film actors can't be belting/yelling out the lyrics to the camera, it works well with theater however changes need to be made in order to fit the medium. It was presented in the film well because the characters were sneaking around and pick pocketing, so it made sense they weren't loud. It's like expecting a pencil to work the same as a brush.
This is a welcome light relief in the new cinema version. Sacha and Helen were brilliant but I thought their rendition of this was a bit weak. However, the scene was hilarious!
@Jessi3Nightmar3 I knew what musical it is, my questions was about the Video(musical,Documentary, behind the scenes) from what recording or is this private collection material. Thanks
A moment of comic relief at the heart of a beautifully sad show. I love this song.
This is my favourite rendition 👍👍👍 grew up with it
Haha can’t get away from this version I see
And I’m back again 😂
And again 😆
This is the best Thernardier I've seen so far. Not so much character drawl as to make it impossible to understand, but enough to be hilarious.
'Barry James & Gay Soper' The best Thenardiers I ever saw! Amazing!x
This song always brings me in a good mood, and cheers me up again... ☺️ They are both so funny and hilarious here... 😅 Just love them... ♥️
This is my favorite
I Love the actor.. really..!!
This is my favorite !!
Outstanding Barry James performance as Thenardier.
outside of the 10th anniversary tape, this is the best version of this song
This version/recording was the version I grew up with and, imo, the ONLY one I can sing along to
I'm here because of Costanza. Probably I'm gonna go crazy as Shoeman ;)
The way this is MEANT to be sung.
Very well done, I like all the different singers.
my favorite version is Costanza's
"He thought George was gay."
Yada, yada, yada
“Schuman went mad from one note to the next! Couldn’t get it out of his head! He had to be institutionalized!”
This song is stuck in my head XD
Omg this version and the new can't be compared
great!

I love These songs Master of the house and Begars at the Fest
this is good
a good performance. not my favourite though. Allan Armstrong's version at the 10th anniversary is definatly the best.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSTK!!!
..and I think Barry James (in this clip) is the definitive performance - even if he wasn't the original. I guess it depends what you're used to!
I prefer Alun Armstrong and Jenny Galloway, I liked Jenny with Matt Lucas but better with Alun Armstrong.
The cheese tax the cheese tax

Best Thenardiers to my knowledge:
1. Barry James
2. Alun Armstrong
3. Ashley Artus
4. Matt Lucas
5. Gary Beach

Yup. Costanza got me here. LOL.
Alun Armstrong was better.
